Solvatochromic shifts of polar and non-polar molecules in ambient and supercritical water: A sequential quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics study including solute-solvent electron exchange-correlation

Insights into the halochromism of a bithiophene π* probe

The positive halochromism of the solvatochromic 4-nitro-4'-(N,N-dimethylamino)-2,2'-bithiophene in acetone and 1-butanol was investigated by molecular dynamics simulations and quantum mechanics calculations. Interactions of the dye with the solvated sodium cation were found to have only a minor effect on the observed halochromism, which was ultimately ascribed to a predominant interaction between iodide anions and the N,N-dimethylamino group of the dye.

Dispersion Interactions in QM/EFP

The dispersion energy term between quantum-mechanical (QM) and classical (represented by effective fragment potentials, EFP) subsystems is developed and implemented. A new formulation is based on long-range perturbation theory and uses dynamic polarizability tensors of the effective fragments and electric field integrals and orbital energies of the quantum-mechanical subsystem. No parametrization is involved. The accuracy of the QM-EFP dispersion energy is tested on a number of model systems; the average mean unsigned error is 0.8 kcal/mol or 13% with respect to the symmetry adapted perturbation theory on the S22 data set of noncovalent interactions. The computational cost of the dispersion energy computation is low compared to the self-consistent field calculation of the QM subsystem. The dispersion energy is sensitive to the level of theory employed for the QM part and to the electrostatic interactions in the system. The latter means that the dispersion interactions in the QM/EFP method are not purely two-body but have more complex many-body behavior.

Spectroscopic Properties of Anisole at the Air-Ice Interface: A Combined Experimental-Computational Approach

A combined experimental and computational approach was used to investigate the spectroscopic properties of anisole in aqueous solutions and at the ice-air interface in the temperature range of 77-298 K. The absorption, diffuse reflectance, and emission spectra of ice samples containing anisole prepared by different techniques, such as slow freezing (frozen aqueous solutions), shock freezing (ice grains), or anisole vapor deposition on ice grains, were measured to evaluate changes in the contaminated ice matrix that occur at different temperatures. It was found that the position of the lowest absorption band of anisole and its tail shift bathochromically by ∼4 nm in frozen samples compared to liquid aqueous solutions. On the other hand, the emission spectra of aqueous anisole solutions were found to fundamentally change upon freezing. While one emission band (∼290 nm) was observed under all circumstances, the second band at ∼350 nm, assigned to an anisole excimer, appeared only at certain temperatures (150-250 K). Its disappearance at lower temperatures is attributed to the formation of crystalline anisole on the ice surface. DFT and ADC(2) calculations were used to interpret the absorption and emission spectra of anisole monomer and dimer associates. Various stable arrangements of the anisole associates were found at the disordered water-air interface in the ground and excited states, but only those with a substantial overlap of the aromatic rings are manifested by the emission band at ∼350 nm.

Solvent Induced Transformations of n-π* Absorption in Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, and Acetone

Absorption spectra of formaldehyde (FA), acetaldehyde (AA), and acetone are compared in the vapor phase, nonpolar, and polar solutions at 295 K. The vibronic n-π* transition of carbonyl chromophore is mainly composed of the overtones of >C═O stretching vibration. A new phenomenon is observed in liquid solutions, consisting of a relative increase of Franck-Condon factors for the second and third harmonics in FA, and the second to fourth replica in AA, with respect to the gas phase. In AA and acetone with poorly resolved vibronic structure, the redistribution of intensities produces a false "solvent shift" of the band maximum between the vapor and nonpolar liquid phase by -250 ± 50 cm(-1). Modification in vibronic coupling can also explain unusual narrowing of the band contour in the solution, reported earlier for acetone (Renge , I. J. Phys. Chem. A 2009, 113, 10678). No detectable shift occurs as a function of solvent polarizability (refractive index function (n(2) - 1)/(n(2) + 2)) in n-alkanes for FA, AA, and acetone, as well as for cyclopentanone and camphor. Incidentally, the bathochromic dispersive shift is almost exactly compensated by a hypsochromic induction shift. The latter is due to the diminishing dipole moment in the excited state of the carbonyl chromophore. Differences in polarizability α and dipole moments μ were estimated for FA (Δα = 0.33 ± 0.1 Å(3)), AA (Δμ = -1.05 ± 0.2 D, Δα = 0.5 ± 0.2 Å(3)), and acetone (Δμ = -1.3 ± 0.2 D, Δα = 0.65 ± 0.2 Å(3)). The increase of α by ∼10% upon excitation is plausible for a weak n-π* transition. By contrast, near doubling of α in the upper state has been reported recently for several ketones, with Δα reaching 10 Å(3) (Catalán, J.; Catalán, J. P. Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2011, 13, 4072). Empirical partitioning of solvent shifts into repulsive-dispersive, induction, dipole-dipole, and hydrogen bonding contributions was proposed to serve as a benchmark in computer chemical calculations.
