IR spectroscopy of monohydrated tryptamine cation: Rearrangement of the intermolecular hydrogen bond induced by photoionization

Synergistic Spectroscopic and Computational Characterization Evidencing the Preservation or Flipping of the Hydroxyl Group of 2-Phenylethyl Alcohol upon Single and Double Hydration

Even apparently simple, obtaining and analyzing observations on molecules and clusters and unambiguously assigning their structures is challenging. We report here the first ionization-loss Raman spectra compared to quantum chemical predictions for establishing the structural preferences of hydrates of the neurotransmitters hydroxy analogue, 2-phenylethyl alcohol (PEAL). The spectra encode two monohydrates and two previously unnoticed dihydrates, consequences of water insertion and sidewise attachment to the O-H group of gauche PEALs, in PEAL-H2O and PEAL-(H2O)2, or the higher-energy gauche-trans PEAL in the latter. The electronic structures retain the stable PEAL or flip its O-H to convert the gauche-trans PEAL conformer to the global minimum-energy dihydrate. We disclose conventional and bifurcated hydrogen bonds and electron steric repulsions by noncovalent interaction analysis and correlations between the experimental O-H stretching vibrational frequencies and the O-H and H···X bond lengths and electron densities, pointing to implications on hydrate forms and our approach virtue.

Microhydration of the Pyrrole Cation (Py+) Revealed by IR Spectroscopy: Ionization-Induced Rearrangement of the Hydrogen-Bonded Network of Py+(H2O)2

Microhydration of heterocyclic aromatic molecules can be an appropriate fundamental model to shed light on intermolecular interactions and functions of macromolecules and biomolecules. We characterize herein the microhydration process of the pyrrole cation (Py⁺) by infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy and dispersion-corrected density functional theory calculations (B3LYP-D3/aug-cc-pVTZ). Analysis of IRPD spectra of mass-selected Py⁺(H₂O)₂ and its cold Ar-tagged cluster in the NH and OH stretch range combined with geometric parameters of intermolecular structures, binding energies, and natural atomic charge distribution provides a clear picture of the growth of the hydration shell and cooperativity effects. Py⁺(H₂O)₂ is formed by stepwise hydration of the acidic NH group of Py⁺ by a hydrogen-bonded (H₂O)₂ chain with NH···OH···OH configuration. In this linear H-bonded hydration chain, strong cooperativity, mainly arising from the positive charge, strengthens both the NH···O and OH···O H-bonds with respect to those of Py⁺H₂O and (H₂O)₂, respectively. The linear chain structure of the Py⁺(H₂O)₂ cation is discussed in terms of the ionization-induced rearrangement of the hydration shell of the neutral Py(H₂O)₂ global minimum characterized by the so-called "σ-π bridge structure" featuring a cyclic NH···OH···OH···π H-bonded network. Emission of the π electron from Py by ionization generates a repulsive interaction between the positive π site of Py⁺ and the π-bonded OH hydrogen of (H₂O)₂, thereby breaking this OH···π hydrogen bond and driving the hydration structure toward the linear chain motif of the global minimum on the cation potential.

Experimental/Computational Study on the Impact of Fluorine on the Structure and Noncovalent Interactions in the Monohydrated Cluster of ortho-Fluorinated 2-Phenylethylamine

Fluorine-containing medicinal compounds frequently allow modulation of physical-chemical properties. Here, we address the effect of fluorine, near the ethylamino side chain, on conformational flexibility and noncovalent interactions (NCIs) of the selected jet-cooled monohydrated cluster of 2-(2-fluoro-phenyl)-ethylamine (2-FPEA) by mass-selected resonance-enhanced two-photon ionization and ionization-loss stimulated Raman spectroscopies. Our results show that Raman spectral signatures of the 2-FPEA-H₂O cluster match the scaled harmonic vibrational Raman frequencies, resulting from density functional theory calculations of the most stable 2-FPEA gauche conformer hydrogen-bonded (HB) to water, confirming the three-dimensional cluster structure. This predicted electronic structure, together with NCI analysis, allows visualization and assessment of the attractive and repulsive interactions. The comparison of the NCIs and revealed red (O-H and N-H stretches) and blue shifts (C-H stretches and CH₂ out-of-plane bends) of the cluster to other class members confirm O-H···N, N-H···π, C-H···O, and C-H···F HB formation and their contribution to structure stabilization, uncovering the potential of the approach.

Revealing the Structure and Noncovalent Interactions of Isolated Molecules by Laser-Desorption/Ionization-Loss Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy and Quantum Calculations

The structural and dynamical characteristics of isolated molecules are essential, yet obtaining this information is difficult. We demonstrate laser-desorption jet-cooling/ionization-loss stimulated Raman spectroscopy to obtain Raman spectral signatures of nonvolatile molecules in the gas phase. The vibrational features of a test substance, the most abundant conformer of tryptamine, are compared and found to match those resulting from the scaled harmonic Raman spectrum obtained by density functional theory calculations. The vibrational signatures serve to identify the most prominent gauche conformer and evaluate its predicted electronic structure. These findings, together with noncovalent interaction (NCI) analysis, provide new insights into electron densities and reduced density gradients, assessing the hydrogen bonds (N-H···π and C-H···H-C) and interplay between attractive and repulsive NCIs affecting the structure. This approach accesses vibrational signatures of isolated nonvolatile molecules by tabletop lasers at uniform resolution and in a broad frequency range, promising great benefit to future studies.

Real-time observation of photoionization-induced water migration dynamics in 4-methylformanilide-water by picosecond time-resolved infrared spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

A novel time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopic approach that enables to keep high resolution in both the time and energy domain, nanosecond excitation-picosecond ionization-picosecond infrared probe (ns-ps-ps TRIR) spectroscopy, has been applied to the trans-4-methylformanilide-water (4MetFA-W) cluster. Water migration dynamics from the CO to the NH binding site in a peptide linkage triggered by photoionization of 4MetFA-W is directly monitored by the ps time evolution of IR spectra, and the presence of an intermediate state is revealed. The time evolution is analyzed by rate equations based on a four-state model of the migration dynamics. Time constants for the initial to the intermediate and hot product and to the final product are obtained. The acceleration of the dynamics by methyl substitution and the strong contribution of intracluster vibrational energy redistribution in the termination of the solvation dynamics is suggested. This picture is well confirmed by the ab initio on-the-fly molecular dynamics simulations. Vibrational assignments of 4MetFA and 4MetFA-W in the neutral (S₀ and S₁) and ionic (D₀) electronic states measured by ns IR dip and electron-impact IR photodissociation spectroscopy are also discussed prior to the results of time-resolved spectroscopy.

Real-time observation of the photoionization-induced water rearrangement dynamics in the 5-hydroxyindole-water cluster by time-resolved IR spectroscopy

Solvation plays an essential role in controlling the mechanism and dynamics of chemical reactions in solution. The present study reveals that changes in the local solute-solvent interaction have a great impact on the timescale of solvent rearrangement dynamics. Time-resolved IR spectroscopy has been applied to a hydration rearrangement reaction in the monohydrated 5-hydroxyindole-water cluster induced by photoionization of the solute molecule. The water molecule changes the stable hydration site from the indolic NH site to the substituent OH site, both of which provide a strongly attractive potential for hydration. The rearrangement time constant amounts to 8 ± 2 ns, and is further slowed down by a factor of more than five at lower excess energy. These rearrangement times are slower by about three orders of magnitude than those reported for related systems where the water molecule is repelled from a repulsive part of the interaction potential toward an attractive well. The excess energy dependence of the time constant is well reproduced by RRKM theory. Differences in the reaction mechanism are discussed on the basis of energy relaxation dynamics.

The Structure of Diphenyl Ether-Methanol in the Electronically Excited and Ionic Ground States: A Combined IR/UV Spectroscopic and Theoretical Study

Diphenyl ether offers competing docking sites for methanol: the ether oxygen acts as a common hydrogen-bond acceptor and the π system of each phenyl ring allows for OH-π interactions driven by electrostatic, induction, and dispersion forces. Based on investigations in the electronic ground state (S₀ ), we present a detailed study of the electronically excited state (S₁ ) and the ionic ground state (D₀ ), in which an impact on the structural preference is expected compared with the S₀ state. Dispersion forces in the electronically excited state were analyzed by comparing the computed binding energies at the coupled-cluster-singles (CCS) and approximate coupled-cluster-singles-doubles levels of theory (CC2 approximation). By applying UV/IR/UV spectroscopy, we found a more strongly bound OH-π structure in the S₁ state compared with the S₀ state, in agreement with spin-component-scaled CC2 calculations. A structural rearrangement into a non-hydrogen-bonded structure takes places upon ionization in the D₀ state, which was revealed by using IR photodissociation spectroscopy and confirmed by theory.

Microsolvation of the pyrrole cation (Py+) with nonpolar and polar ligands: infrared spectra of Py+–Ln with L = Ar, N2, and H2O (n ≤ 3)

IR spectra and dispersion-corrected density functional calculations of pyrrole cluster ions with Ar, N₂, and H₂O reveal the competition between H-bonding and π-stacking motifs of this prototypical heterocyclic aromatic cation in a hydrophobic and hydrophilic solvent.

Solvation of fluoroform and fluoroform-dimethylether dimer in liquid krypton: a theoretical cryospectroscopic study

A hybrid, sequential statistical physics-quantum mechanical electronic-quantum mechanical nuclei approach has been applied to study the C-H stretching frequencies of bare fluoroform dissolved in liquid krypton under cryogenic conditions (at ~130 K), as well as upon blue shifting hydrogen bonding interactions with dimethylether in the same solvent. The structure of the liquid at 130 K was generated by Monte Carlo simulations of cryogenic Kr solutions containing either fluoroform or fluoroform and dimethylether molecules. Statistically uncorrelated configurations were appropriately chosen from the equilibrated MC runs and supermolecular clusters containing solute and solvent molecules (either standalone or embedded in the "bulk" part of the solvent treated as a polarizable continuum) were subjected to quantum mechanical electronic (QMel) and subsequent quantum mechanical nuclei (QMnuc) calculations. QMel calculations were implemented to generate the in-liquid 1D intramolecular C-H stretching vibrational potential of the fluoroform moiety and subsequently in the QMnuc phase the corresponding anharmonic C-H stretching frequency was computed by diagonalization techniques. Finally, the constructed vibrational density of states histograms were compared to the experimental Raman bands. The calculated anharmonic vibrational frequency shifts of the fluoroform C-H stretching mode upon interaction with dimethylether in liquid Kr are in very good agreement with the experimental data (20.3 at MP2 level vs. 16.6 cm(-1) experimentally). Most of this relatively large frequency blue shift is governed by configurations characterized by a direct C-H···O contact between monomers. The second population detected during MC simulations, characterized by reversed orientation of the monomers, has a minor contribution to the spectral appearance. The experimentally observed trend in the corresponding bandwidths is also correctly reproduced by our theoretical approach. Solvation of the fluoroform monomer, according to experiment, results in small C-H stretching frequency red shift (~-2 cm(-1)), while our approach predicts a blue shift of about 10 cm(-1). By a detailed analysis of the anharmonic C-H stretching frequency dependence on the position of the nearest solvent krypton atom and also by analyzing the vibrational Stark effect induced by the local fluctuating field component parallel to the C-H axis, we have derived several conclusions related to these observations. The frequency vs. C···Kr distance dependence shows appreciable fluctuations and even changes in sign at R values close to the maximum of the C···Kr radial distribution function, so that most of the first-shell Kr atoms are located at positions at which the CH frequency shifts acquire either small negative or small positive values. It so happens, therefore, that even the actual sign of the frequency shift is strongly dependent on the correct description of the first solvation shell around CF3H by the Monte Carlo method, much more than the other in-liquid properties calculated by similar approaches.
