Abstract
We demonstrate a novel method to ionize molecules or molecular clusters by proton transfer at temperatures below 1 K. The method yields nascent ions and largely eliminates secondary reactions, even for notoriously 'delicate' molecules. Protonation is achieved inside liquid helium nanodroplets (HNDs) and begins with the formation of (H2)mH+ ions as the proton donors. In a separate and subsequent step the HNDs are doped with a proton acceptor molecule, X. Proton transfer occurs between X and the cold proton donor ions inside a helium droplet, an approach that avoids the large excess energy that is released if HNDs are first doped and then ionized. Mass spectra, recorded after stripping excess helium and hydrogen in a collision cell, show that this method offers a new way to determine proton affinities of molecules and clusters by proton-transfer bracketing, to investigate astrochemically relevant ion-molecule reactions at sub-kelvin temperatures, and to prepare XH+ ions that are suitable for messenger-tagging action spectroscopy.

Abstract
The real-time dynamics of excited alkali metal atoms (Rb) attached to quantum fluid He nanodroplets is investigated using femtosecond imaging spectroscopy and time-dependent density functional theory. We disentangle the competing dynamics of desorption of excited Rb atoms off the He droplet surface and solvation inside the droplet interior as the Rb atom is ionized. For Rb excited to the 5p and 6p states, desorption occurs on starkly differing time scales (∼100 versus ∼1 ps, respectively). The comparison between theory and experiment indicates that desorption proceeds either impulsively (6p) or in a transition regime between impulsive dissociation and complex desorption (5p).

Abstract
The desorption dynamics of rubidium dimers (Rb2) off the surface of helium nanodroplets induced by laser excitation is studied by employing both nanosecond and femtosecond ion imaging spectroscopy. Similarly to alkali metal atoms, we find that the Rb2 desorption process resembles the dissociation of a diatomic molecule. However, both angular and energy distributions of detected Rb2+ ions appear to be most crucially determined by the Rb2 intramolecular degrees of freedom rather than by those of the Rb2HeN complex. The pump-probe dynamics of Rb2+ is found to be slower than that of Rb+, pointing at a weaker effective guest-host repulsion for excited molecules than for single atoms.

Abstract
Phase-modulated wave packet interferometry is combined with mass-resolved photoion detection to investigate rubidium atoms attached to helium nanodroplets in a molecular beam experiment. The spectra of atomic Rb electronic states show a vastly enhanced sensitivity and spectral resolution when compared to conventional pump-probe wave packet interferometry. Furthermore, the formation of Rb*He exciplex molecules is probed and for the first time a fully resolved vibrational spectrum for transitions between the lowest excited 5Π3/2 and the high-lying electronic states 2(2)Π, 4(2)Δ, 6(2)Σ is obtained and compared to theory. The feasibility of applying coherent multidimensional spectroscopy to dilute cold gas phase samples is demonstrated in these experiments.

Abstract
![]()
We investigate the photoinduced relaxation
dynamics of Cr atoms
embedded into superfluid helium nanodroplets. One- and two-color resonant
two-photon ionization (1CR2PI and 2CR2PI, respectively) are applied
to study the two strong ground state transitions z7P2,3,4° ←
a7S3 and y7P2,3,4° ← a7S3. Upon photoexcitation, Cr* atoms are ejected from the
droplet in various excited states, as well as paired with helium atoms
as Cr*–Hen exciplexes. For the
y7P2,3,4° intermediate state, comparison of the two methods reveals
that energetically lower states than previously identified are also
populated. With 1CR2PI we find that the population of ejected z5P3° states is reduced for increasing droplet size, indicating that population
is transferred preferentially to lower states during longer interaction
with the droplet. In the 2CR2PI spectra we find evidence for generation
of bare Cr atoms in their septet ground state (a7S3) and metastable quintet state (a5S2), which we attribute to a photoinduced fast excitation–relaxation
cycle mediated by the droplet. A fraction of Cr atoms in these ground
and metastable states is attached to helium atoms, as indicated by
blue wings next to bare atom spectral lines. These relaxation channels
provide new insight into the interaction of excited transition metal
atoms with helium nanodroplets.
