Abstract
Nonlinear plasmonics requires the use of high-intensity laser sources in the visible and near/mid-infrared spectral ranges to characterise the potential enhancement of the vibrational fingerprint of chemically functionalised nanostructured interfaces aimed at improving the molecular detection threshold in nanosensors. We used Two-Colour Sum-Frequency Generation (2C-SFG) nonlinear optical spectroscopy coupled to the European CLIO Free Electron Laser in order to highlight an energy transfer in organic and inorganic interfaces built on a silicon substrate. We evidence that a molecular pollutant, such as thiophenol molecules adsorbed on small gold metal nanospheres grafted on silicon, was detected at the monolayer scale in the 10 µm infrared spectral range, with increasing SFG intensity of three specific phenyl ring vibration modes reaching two magnitude orders from blue to green–yellow excitation wavelengths. This observation is related to a strong plasmonic coupling to the thiophenol molecules vibrations. The high level of gold nanospheres aggregation on the substrate allows us to dramatically increase the presence of hotspots, revealing collective plasmon modes based on strong local electric fields between the gold nanoparticles packed in close contact on the substrate. This configuration favors detection of Raman active vibration modes, for which 2C-SFG spectroscopy is particularly efficient in this unusual infrared spectral range.

Abstract
Nonlinear optical Sum and Difference-Frequency spectroscopies are used to probe and model the surface of thiophenol-functionalised gold nanoparticles grafted on a Si(100) substrate through two different silanization procedures. By scanning the [980-1100 cm(-1)] infrared spectral range with the CLIO Free Electron Laser, ring deformation vibrations of adsorbed thiophenol are investigated. Quantitative data analysis addresses three levels of organization: microscopic, nanoscopic and molecular. Grafting with p-aminophenyl-trimethoxysilane shows an increase of around 40% in surface density of nanoparticles (N(s)) as compared to 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane. The relative amplitudes of the resonant and nonresonant contributions to the SFG and DFG spectra are discussed in terms of N(s), Fresnel reflectivity factors and local amplification of the nonlinear signals by coupling to the surface plasmon of the particles. They are shown to quantitatively scale with N(s), as measured by atomic force microscopy. Vibration mode assignment is performed through a critical analysis of literature data on IR and Raman spectroscopies coupled to DFT calculations, for which a methodology specific to molecules adsorbed on gold atoms is discussed.

Abstract
The purpose of this investigation is to study the ionic liquid/quartz interface with sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG). SFG spectroscopy was chosen for this study because of its unique ability to yield vibrational spectra of molecules at an interface. Different polarization combinations are used, which probe different susceptibilities, giving SFG the ability to determine molecular orientation at the interface. The ionic liquids used were 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [BMIM][BF(4)], and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [BMIM][PF(6)]. To determine the influence of the molecular structure and charge on orientation at the interface, neutral, 1-methylimidazole, and 1-butylimidazole were also studied. Raman spectra and depolarization ratios were obtained for neat samples of 1-methylimidazole, 1-butylimidazole, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate recorded from 2700 to 3300 cm(-1). SFG spectra of the 1-methylimidazole/quartz interface showed both methyl and aromatic C-H vibrations. Orientation calculations determined that the ring of the molecule is tilted 45-68 degrees from normal, with the methyl group oriented 32-35 degrees from normal. The SFG spectra of 1-butylimidazole contain several resonances from the alkyl chain with only one weak resonance from the aromatic ring. Orientation calculations suggest that the ring is lying in the plane of the surface with the methyl group pointing 43-47 degrees from normal. The orientation of the [BMIM][PF(6)] ionic liquid was sensitive to trace amounts of water and had to be evacuated to <3 x 10(-5) Torr for the water to be removed. SFG spectra of both ionic liquids were similar, displaying resonances from the alkyl chain as well as the aromatic ring. Orientation analysis suggests the aromatic ring was tilted 45-90 degrees from normal for [BMIM][BF(4)], while the ring for [BMIM][PF(6)] was tilted 38-58 degrees from normal. This suggests the orientation of the molecule is influenced by the size of the anion.

Abstract
An improved time correlation function (TCF) description of sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy was developed and applied to theoretically describing the spectroscopy of the ambient water/vapor interface. A more general TCF expression than was published previously is presented-it is valid over the entire vibrational spectrum for both the real and imaginary parts of the signal. Computationally, earlier time correlation function approaches were limited to short correlation times that made signal processing challenging. Here, this limitation is overcome, and well-averaged spectra are presented for the three independent polarization conditions that are possible for electronically nonresonant SFG. The theoretical spectra compare quite favorably in shape and relative magnitude to extant experimental results in the O-H stretching region of water for all polarization geometries. The methodological improvements also allow the calculation of intermolecular SFG spectra. While the intermolecular spectrum of bulk water shows relatively little structure, the interfacial spectra (for polarizations that are sensitive to dipole derivatives normal to the interface--SSP and PPP) show a well-defined intermolecular mode at 875 cm(-1) that is comparable in intensity to the rest of the intermolecular structure, and has an intensity that is approximately one-sixth of the magnitude of the intense free O-H stretching peak. Using instantaneous normal mode methods, the resonance is shown to be due to a wagging mode localized on a single water molecule, almost parallel to the interface, with two hydrogens displaced normal to the interface, and the oxygen anchored in the interface. We have also uncovered the origin of another intermolecular mode at 95 cm(-1) for the SSP and PPP spectra, and at 220 cm(-1) for the SPS spectra. These resonances are due to hindered translations perpendicular to the interface for the SSP and PPP spectra, and translations parallel to the interface for the SPS spectra. Further, by examining the real and imaginary parts of the SFG signal, several resonances are shown to be due to a single spectroscopic species while the "donor" O-H region is shown to consist of three distinct species-consistent with an earlier experimental analysis.

Abstract
An n-alkanethiol, octadecanethiol (ODT), monolayer was successfully prepared onto an oxide-free mild steel (MS) surface under cathodic polarization in a 0.1 M LiCl/CH(3)OH solution containing 1 mM ODT. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance (EIS) and sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy were applied to study and characterize the adsorption of ODT at a MS surface. In 0.1 M LiCl/CH(3)OH solution containing 1 mM ODT, CV of the MS electrode shows a dramatic decrease in charging current and a positive shift in oxidation potential when compared to a solution without ODT. The interfacial capacitance was obtained as 2.52 microF/cm(2) from the impedance data. An average chain tilt angle of 48 degrees for the ODT molecules was deduced from the comparison of the interfacial capacitances of the ODT/MS and ODT/Au monolayers. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the formation of the ODT monolayer on mild steel. The ppp SFG spectrum of the ODT-modified MS features three strong methyl vibrational modes at 2877, 2943, and 2967 cm(-1), indicating the formation of the oriented and densely packed ODT monolayer. However, the appearance of the two weak CH(2) groups' vibrational modes at 2850 and 2914 cm(-1) implies the presence of defects in the ODT monolayer. ODT/Au films were prepared to compare with the ODT/MS films. Orientation analysis of the air/solid interface suggests that the methyl group of ODT/Au films has a tilt angle of 30 degrees , while the methyl group of ODT/MS films has a tilt angle of 23 degrees . Water was found to have an impact on the shape of the SFG spectra of ODT/MS. This suggests that the solution penetrated through the defects to reach the MS surface.

Abstract
Sum frequency vibrational spectra for hexadecanethiol (HDT) adsorbed on thin gold film deposited on the surface of a CaF2 prism have been measured using total-internal reflection broad-bandwidth sum frequency generation (TIR-BBSFG) spectroscopy. The bands attributed to the CH3 symmetric and asymmetric stretching vibrational modes were observed in the sum frequency vibrational spectra. The orientation of the methyl groups was analyzed using the ratio of the intensities of the two modes. The methyl groups of HDT on the thin gold film were much more randomly orientated than those on Au( 111).

Abstract
Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectra of D(2)O and/or acetonitrile (CH(3)CN) on a Pt(111) single-crystal electrode were obtained as a function of applied potential in a 5 mol % water/acetonitrile mixed solvent with different 0.1 molar MSO(3)CF(3) salts (M = H(+), Li(+), Na(+), K(+), and Cs(+)). The results provide a very specific model for the composition of the inner Helmholtz layer as a function of potential and surface charge. Acetonitrile dominates the inner layer with the CN group directed toward the metal at potentials where the metal has a positive charge. As the surface becomes negatively charged, the acetonitrile orientation flips 180 degrees, with the CH(3) group pointing toward the surface. At even more negative surface charge, D(2)O displaces acetonitrile from the inner layer and is the predominant molecule on the surface. Here water is present as an oriented molecule with the oxygen end pointing toward the metal. The potential (and surface charge) where water is the dominant molecule in the inner Helmholtz layer is determined by the solvation energy of the cation.
