Photodissociation of HBr molecules and clusters: Anisotropy parameters, branching ratios, and kinetic energy distributions

Long time scale dynamics of vibrationally excited (HBr)n clusters

We investigated the photodissociation dynamics of vibrationally excited HBr molecules and clusters. The species were generated in a molecular beam and excited with an IR laser to a v = 1 vibrational state. A subsequent ultraviolet (UV)-pulse with 243 nm radiation photolysed the molecules to yield H-fragments, which were resonantly ionized by the same UV-pulse (2 + 1 REMPI) and detected in a velocity map imaging (VMI) experiment. We performed action spectroscopy to distinguish between two expansion regimes: (i) expansion leading to isolated HBr molecules and (ii) generation of large (HBr)_n clusters. Photodissociation of isolated HBr ( v = 1) molecules in particular J ro-vibrational states yielded faster H-fragments (by approximately 0.3 eV) with respect to the photodissociation of the ground state HBr ( v = 0). On the contrary, the IR excitation of molecules in (HBr) _n clusters enhanced the yield of the H-fragments UV-photodissociated from the ground-state HBr ( v = 0) molecules. Our findings show that these molecules are photodissociated within clusters, and they are not free molecules evaporated from clusters after the IR excitation. Nanosecond IR-UV pump-probe experiments show that the IR-excitation enhances the H-fragment UV-photodissociation yield up to ∼100 ns after the IR excitation. After these long IR-UV delays, excitation of HBr molecules in clusters does not originate from the IR-excitation but from the UV-photodissociation and subsequent caging of HBr molecules in v > 0 states. We show that even after ∼100 ns the IR-excited larger (HBr) _n clusters do not decay to individual molecules, and the excitation is still present in some form within these clusters enhancing their UV-photodissociation.

Excitation dynamics involving homogeneous multistate interactions: one and two color VMI and REMPI of HBr

Velocity map imaging (VMI) data and mass resolved REMPI spectra are complementarily utilized to elucidate the involvement of homogeneous multistate interactions in excited state dynamics of HBr. The H¹Σ⁺(v' = 0) and E¹Σ⁺(v' = 1) Rydberg states and the V¹Σ⁺(v'= m + 7) and V¹Σ⁺(v'= m + 8) ion-pair states are explored as a function of rotational quantum number in the two-photon excitation region of 79 100-80 700 cm^-1. H⁺ and Br⁺ images were recorded by one- as well as two-color excitation schemes. Kinetic energy release (KER) spectra and angular distributions were extracted from the data. Strong-to-medium interactions between the E(1) and V(m + 8)/V(m + 7) states on one hand and the H(0) and V(m + 7)/V(m + 8) states on the other hand were quantified from peak shifts and intensity analysis of REMPI spectra. The effects of those interactions on subsequent photoionization and photolytic pathways of HBr were evaluated in one-color VMI experiments of the H⁺ and two-color VMI experiments of the Br⁺ photoproducts.

Experimental and theoretical study of the pyrrole cluster photochemistry: Closing the πσ* dissociation pathway by complexation

Photolysis of size selected pyrrole clusters has been investigated and compared to the photolysis of an isolated pyrrole molecule. Experimentally, size distributions of different mean cluster sizes (n=3 and n>>5) have been prepared in supersonic expansions and the clusters were photolyzed at 243 and 193 nm. The kinetic energy distributions of the H photofragments have been measured. The distributions exhibit a bimodal character with fast and slow H-fragment peaks similar to the spectra of the bare molecule. However, with increasing cluster size the slow component gains intensity with respect to the fast one. A similar effect is observed with increasing the excitation energy from 243 to 193 nm. Theoretical calculations at the CASSCF/CASPT2 level have been performed for bare and complexed pyrroles (pyrrole is complexed with an argon atom and with another pyrrole unit). Combination of theoretical and experimental approaches leads to the conclusion that the direct dissociative pathway along the pisigma* potential energy surface in the N-H stretch coordinate is closed by the presence of the solvent molecule. This pathway is an important channel leading to the fast H atoms in the dissociation of the bare molecule. The solvent molecule influences significantly the electronic structure in the Rydberg-type pisigma* state while it has little influence on the valence states. The slow channel is mostly populated by the out-of-plane deformation mode which is also not influenced by solvation. We have also studied other possible reaction channels in pyrrole clusters (hydrogen transfer, dimerization). The present study shows that more insight into the bulk behavior of biologically relevant molecules can be gained from cluster studies.

Photodissociation of hydrogen halide molecules on free ice nanoparticles

Photodissociation of water clusters doped with HX(X=Br,Cl), molecules has been studied in a molecular beam experiment. The HX(H2O)n clusters are dissociated with 193 nm laser pulses, and the H fragments are ionized at 243.07 nm and their time-of-flight distributions are measured. Experiments with deuterated species DBr(H2O)n and HBr(D2O)n suggest that the photodissociation signal originates from the presence of the HX molecule on the water cluster, but does not come directly from a photolysis of the HX molecule. The H fragment is proposed to originate from the hydronium molecule H3O. Possible mechanisms of the H3O production are discussed. Experimental evidence suggests that acidic dissociation takes place in the cluster, but the H3O+ ion remains rather immobile.

Construction and calibration of an instrument for three-dimensional ion imaging

We describe a new instrument based on a delay-line detector for imaging the complete three-dimensional velocity distribution of photoionized products from photoinitiated reactions. Doppler-free [2+1] resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) of H and D atoms formed upon photolysis of HBr and DBr in the range 203 nm < or = lambda photolysis < or = 243 nm yields radial speeds measured to be accurate within 1% of those calculated. The relative speed resolution is about 5% and limited by photoionization recoil broadening. A relative speed resolution of 3.4% is obtained for [3+1] REMPI, which minimizes the ionization recoil. We also determine the branching ratio between ground-state and spin-orbit-excited product channels and their associated anisotropies. We find that DBr photolysis dynamics differs slightly from its HBr counterpart.

Two-color reduced-Doppler ion imaging

We demonstrate a two-color reduced-Doppler probe for ion imaging that, in many applications, offers advantages over conventional 2+1 resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization detection. Using counterpropagating beams of two different colors, one of which is broadband 266 nm, we achieve convenient and sensitive D atom detection without the need for Doppler scanning. We demonstrate the approach using 224 nm photodissociation of DBr. This method improves the sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio and presents advantages and opportunities for use in the other systems.

Photodissociation of HBr. 1. Electronic Structure, Photodissociation Dynamics, and Vector Correlation Coefficients

Ab initio potential energy curves, transition dipole moments, and spin-orbit coupling matrix elements are computed for HBr. These are then used, within the framework of time-dependent quantum-mechanical wave-packet calculations, to study the photodissociation dynamics of the molecule. Total and partial integral cross sections, the branching fraction for the formation of excited-state bromine atoms Br(2P(1/2)), and the lowest order anisotropy parameters, beta, for both ground and excited-state bromine are calculated as a function of photolysis energy and compared to experimental and theoretical data determined previously. Higher order anisotropy parameters are computed for the first time for HBr and compared to recent experimental measurements. A new expression for the Re[a1(3) (parallel, perpendicular)] parameter describing coherent parallel and perpendicular production of ground-state bromine in terms of the dynamical functions is given. Although good agreement is obtained between the theoretical predictions and the experimental measurements, the discrepancies are analyzed to establish how improvements might be achieved. Insight is obtained into the nonadiabatic dynamics by comparing the results of diabatic and fully adiabatic calculations.

Doppler-free/Doppler-sliced ion imaging

We demonstrate a hybrid Doppler-free/Doppler-sliced ion imaging approach that is well-suited for detection of H or D atoms. The method relies on 2 + 1 resonant ionization with identical, nearly counterpropagating beams that are coplanar but directed at a small angle relative to the detector face. This results in Doppler selection of the velocity component along the time of flight axis but Doppler-free detection in the plane perpendicular to this axis. The results show high signal level and excellent slicing ( approximately 5%), yielding velocity resolution completely determined by cation recoil in the ionization step.

Photodissociation of HI and DI: Testing models for electronic structure via polarization of atomic photofragments

The photodissociation dynamics of HI and DI are examined using time-dependent wave-packet techniques. The orientation and alignment parameters aQ(K) (p) are determined as a function of photolysis energy for the resulting ground-state I(2P(3/2)) and excited-state I(2P(1/2)) atoms. The aQ(K) (p) parameters describe the coherent and incoherent contributions to the angular momentum distributions from the A 1pi(1), a 3pi(1), and t 3sigma(1) electronic states accessed by perpendicular excitation and the a 3pi(0+) state accessed by a parallel transition. The outcomes of the dynamics based on both shifted ab initio results and three empirical models for the potential-energy curves and transition dipole moments are compared and contrasted. It is demonstrated that experimental measurement of the aQ(K) (p) parameters for the excitation from the vibrational ground state (upsilon=0) would be able to distinguish between the available models for the HI potential-energy curves and transition dipole moments. The differences between the aQ(K) (p) parameters for the excitation from upsilon=0 stand in sharp contrast to the scalar properties, i.e., total cross section and I* branching fraction, which require experimental measurement of photodissociation from excited vibrational states (upsilon>0) to distinguish between the models.

Measurement of Br photofragment orientation and alignment from HBr photodissociation: Production of highly spin-polarized hydrogen atoms

The orientation and alignment of the (2)P(3/2) and (2)P(1/2) Br photofragments from the photodissociation of HBr is measured at 193 nm in terms of a(q) ((k))(p) parameters, using slice imaging. The A (1)Pi state is excited almost exclusively, and the measured a(q) ((k))(p) parameters and the spin-orbit branching ratio show that the dissociation proceeds predominantly via nonadiabatic transitions to the a (3)Pi and 1 (3)Sigma(+) states. Conservation of angular momentum shows that the electrons of the nascent H atom cofragments (recoiling parallel to the photolysis polarization) are highly spin polarized: about 100% for the Br((2)P(1/2)) channel, and 86% for the Br((2)P(3/2)) channel. A similar analysis is demonstrated for the photodissociation of HCl.

Photodissociation of HCl and small (HCl)m complexes in and on large Arn clusters

Photodissociation experiments were carried out at 193 nm for single HCl molecules which are adsorbed on the surface of large Ar n clusters and small (HCl)m complexes which are embedded in the interior of these clusters. For the surface case the size dependence is measured for the average sizes n=140-1000. No cage exit events are observed in agreement with the substitutional position of the molecule deeply buried in the outermost shell. This result is confirmed by a molecular dynamics simulation of the pickup process under realistic conditions concerning the experiment and the interaction potentials. The calculations of the dissociation process employ the surface hopping model. For the embedded case the average sizes covered are m=3 and 6 and n=8-248. The kinetic energy of the H atom fragments is measured exhibiting peaks at zero and around 2.0 eV which mark completely caged and unperturbed fragments, respectively. The ratio of theses peaks strongly depends on the cluster size and agrees well with theoretical predictions for one and two closed icosahedral shells, in which the nonadiabatic coupling of all states was accounted for.

Photodissociation of hydrogen iodide on the surface of large argon clusters: The orientation of the librational wave function and the scattering from the cluster cage

A set of photodissociation experiments and simulations of hydrogen iodide (HI) on Arn clusters, with an average size n = 139, has been carried out for different laser polarizations. The doped clusters are prepared by a pick-up process. The HI molecule is then photodissociated by a UV laser pulse and the outgoing H fragment is ionized by resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization in a (2 + 1) excitation scheme within the same laser pulse at the wavelength of 243 nm. The measured time-of-flight spectra are transformed into hydrogen kinetic energy distributions. They exhibit a strong fraction of caged H atoms at zero-kinetic energy and peaks at the unperturbed cage exit for both spin-orbit channels nearly independent of the polarization. At this dissociation wavelength, the bare HI molecule exhibits a strict state separation, with a parallel transition to the spin-orbit excited state and perpendicular transitions to the ground state. The experimental results have been reproduced using molecular simulation techniques. Classical molecular dynamics was used to estimate the HI dopant distribution after the pick-up procedure. Subsequently, quasi-classical molecular dynamics (Wigner trajectories approach) has been applied for the photodissociation dynamics. The following main results have been obtained: (i) The HI dopant lands on the surface of the argon cluster during the pick-up process, (ii) zero-point energy plays a dominant role for the hydrogen orientation in the ground state of HI-Arn surface clusters, qualitatively changing the result of the photodissociation experiment upon increasing the number of argon atoms, and, finally, (iii) the scattering of hydrogen atoms from the cage which originate from different dissociation states seriously affects the experimentally measured kinetic energy distributions.
