Solid-state deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance of the methyl dynamics of poly(α-methylstyrene) and polymethylphenylsilane

Deuteron magnetic resonance study of glyceline deep eutectic solvents: Selective detection of choline and glycerol dynamics

Glyceline, a green solvent considered for various electrochemical applications, represents a multi-component glass former. Viewed from this perspective, the choline cation and the hydrogen bond donor glycerol, the two major constituents forming this deep eutectic solvent, were studied using nuclear magnetic resonance in a selective manner by means of suitably deuteron-labeled isotopologues. Carried out from far above to far below the glass transition temperature, measurements and analyses of the spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times reveal that the reorientational dynamics of the components, i.e., of glycerol as well as of chain deuterated choline chloride are slightly different. Possible implications of this finding regarding the hydrogen-bonding pattern in glyceline are discussed. Furthermore, the deuterated methyl groups in choline chloride are exploited as sensitive probes of glyceline's supercooled and glassy states. Apart from spin relaxometry, a detailed line shape analysis of the CD₃ spectra yields valuable insights into the broad intermolecular and intramolecular energy barrier distributions present in this binary mixture.

Dynamics of Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide Head Groups in Bulk by Solid-State Deuterium NMR Spectroscopy

Variable temperature, solid-state deuterium (²H) NMR spectroscopy has been used to probe the rather complex head group dynamics of the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide- d₉ (CTAB- d₉) in bulk. Heating and cooling runs were made as the surfactant underwent supercooling. ²H NMR line shape simulations were used to identify the hierarchy of the molecular motions of CTAB as a function of temperature. Fast continuous methyl rotations about the N-C_methyl axes and 3-fold jumps about the main chain C-N axis were present at all of the temperatures from -40 to 120 °C. With heating, the spectra were consistent with CTAB molecules starting 180° flips about the hydrocarbon chain molecular axis around 0 °C, which continued to flip with increasing flip rates up to 80 °C. At 90 °C, the flips changed to rotation of the CTAB molecules about the hydrocarbon chain axis and that rotation continued to 120 °C. Comparison of spectra of bulk CTAB at different temperatures from heating and cooling runs revealed that the rotation about the long axis of the hydrocarbon chains started at around 90 °C on heating, however, it does not freeze out until between 70 and 80 °C because of supercooling.

Restricted diffusion of methyl groups in proteins revealed by deuteron NMR: manifestation of intra-well dynamics

The three-site hops of methyl groups are usually used as an approximation of the mechanistic description of motions responsible for the longitudinal NMR relaxation. Distinguishing between three-site hops and a more realistic mechanism of diffusion in a potential requires extended experimental and computational analysis. In order to achieve this goal, in this work the restricted diffusion is decomposed into two independent modes, namely, the jumps between potential wells and intra-well fluctuations, assuming time scale separation between these modes. This approach allows us to explain the rise in the theoretical value of T1 minimum for the restricted diffusion mechanism compared with the three-site hops mechanism via rescaling the three-site hops correlation function by the order parameter of intra-well motions. The main result of the paper is that, in general, intra-well dynamics can be visible in NMR even in the limit of large barrier heights in contrast to the common view that this limit converges to the three-site hops mechanism. Based on a previously collected detailed set of deuteron NMR relaxation and spectral data in the villin headpiece subdomain protein over a wide temperature range of 300-31 K, we are then able to conclude that the mechanism of diffusion in the threefold potential is likely to be the main source of the dynamics in this system.
