Abstract
The gas phase structure, stability, spectra, and proton transfer properties of monoprotic carborane acid-water clusters [CB(11)F(m)H(11-m)(OH(2))(1)]-(H(2)O)(n) (where m = 0, 5, and 10; n = 1-6) have been calculated using density functional theory (DFT) with the Becke's three-parameter hybrid exchange functional and Lee-Yang-Parr correlation functional (B3LYP) using 6-31+G* basis set. Results reveal that Eigen cation defects are found in CBW(n) (where n = 2-6) clusters and these clusters are significantly more stable than the non-Eigen geometry. In addition to the conventional hydrogen bond (H-bond) the role of dihydrogen bond (DHB) and halogen bond (XB) in the stabilization of these clusters can be observed from the molecular graphs derived from the atoms in molecules (AIM) analysis. Spectral information shows the features of Eigen cation and proton oscillation involved in the proton transfer process. The dissociation of proton from the perfluoro derivatives with two water molecules is more favorable when compared to the other derivatives.

Abstract
The reactivity of p-difluorobenzene/methanol cluster ions has been investigated by using triple quadrupole mass spectrometry and DFT calculations. The present study was performed in light of a recent investigation of p-difluorobenzene/methanol (P = F-C(6)H(4)-F and M = CH(3)OH) heterocluster ions where the solvent-catalyzed formation of p-fluoroanisole (A = CH(3)O-C(6)H(4)-F) was observed in P(M)(2)(+) clusters and not in PM(+) clusters. The results of our mass selected cluster ion study and theoretical calculations confirm that a single extra molecule of methanol can lower the reaction activation energy barrier in agreement with previous work for smaller clusters (PM(+) and P(M)(2)(+)). However, we also observe that P(M)(3)(+) and P(M)(4)(+) clusters undergo evaporative loss of neutral methanol to establish the P(M)(2)(+) cluster before reacting. P(M)(n>4)(+) clusters are capable of reacting through multiple pathways, in some cases generating a 1,4-dimethoxybenzene (B = CH(3)O-C(6)H(4)-OCH(3)) product via two separate substitution reactions within the same cluster ion. DFT calculations were employed to model the structures of the parent cluster ions, and transition state calculations were used to evaluate the activation energy for the p-fluoroanisole-forming substitution reaction. The calculations suggest that the reaction proceeds through a transition state containing a six-member hydrogen-bonded ring involving a reacting methanol and a second methanol that significantly lowers the activation energy.

Abstract
A high sensitivity spectroscopy is employed to detect vibrational antiitions of ethanol neutrals and ions in a supersonic expansion. The infrared (IR) features located at 3682 and 3667 cm(-1) can be assigned to the OH stretch for the two neutral C(2)H(5)OH conformers, anti and gauche, respectively. Their overtone energies located at 7179 (anti) and 7141 (gauche) cm(-1) are also identified. The OH fundamental stretch for ethanol ions is redshifted around 210 cm(-1), while the CH stretch modes are unchanged for neutral and ionic C(2)H(5)OH at around 2900-3000 cm(-1). The charge on the ethanol ion is apparently localized on the oxygen atom. IR induced photodissociation spectroscopy is applied to the study of neutral and protonated ethanol clusters. Neutral and protonated ethanol cluster vibrations are observed. The CH modes are not perturbed by the clustering process. Neutral clusters display only hydrogen bonded OH features, while the protonated ionic clusters display both hydrogen bonded and non-hydrogen-bonded features. These spectroscopic results are analyzed to obtain qualitative structural information on neutral and ionic ethanol clusters.

Abstract
Beginning in the mid-1980s, a number of innovative experimental studies on ionic clusters emerged from the laboratory of Yuan T. Lee combining infrared laser spectroscopy and tandem mass spectrometry. Coupled with modern electronic structure calculations, this research explored many facets of ionic clusters including solvation, structure, and dynamics. These efforts spawned a resurgence in gas-phase cluster spectroscopy. This paper will focus on the major areas of research initiated by the Lee group and how these studies stimulated and influenced others in what is currently a vibrant and growing field.

Abstract
Isolated and microsolvated protonated ethanol clusters, (EtOH)qH+-Ln with L = Ar and N2, are characterized by infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy in the 3 microm range and quantum chemical calculations. For comparison, also the spectrum of the protonated methanol dimer, (MeOH)2H+, is presented. The IRPD spectra carry the signature of H-bonded (EtOH)qH+ chain structures, in which the excess proton is either strongly localized on one or (nearly) equally shared between two EtOH molecules, corresponding to Eigen-type ion cores (EtOH2+ for q = 1, 3) or Zundel-type ion cores (EtOH-H+-HOEt for q = 2, 4), respectively. In contrast to neutral (EtOH)q clusters, no cyclic (EtOH)qH+ isomers are detected in the size range investigated (q < or = 4), indicative of the substantial impact of the excess proton on the properties of the H-bonded ethanol network. The acidity of the two terminal OH groups in the (EtOH)qH+ chains decreases with the length of the chain (q). Comparison between (ROH)qH+ with R = CH3 and C2H5 shows that the acidity of the terminal O-H groups increases with the length of the aliphatic rest (R). The most stable (EtOH)qH+-Ln clusters with n < or = 2 feature intermolecular H-bonds between the inert ligands and the two available terminal OH groups of the (EtOH)qH+ chain. Asymmetric microsolvation of (EtOH)qH+ with q = 2 and 4 promotes a switch from Zundel-type to Eigen-type cores, demonstrating that the fundamental structural motif of the (EtOH)qH+ proton wire sensitively depends on the environment. The strength of the H-bonds between L and (EtOH)qH+ is shown to provide a rather sensitive probe of the acidity of the terminal OH groups.

Abstract
Infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectra of clusters composed of protonated phenol (C(6)H(7)O(+)) and several ligands L are recorded in the O-H and C-H stretch ranges using a tandem mass spectrometer coupled to a cluster ion source. The C(6)H(7)O(+)-L(n) complexes (L=Ar/N(2), n=1-6) are generated by chemical ionization of a supersonic expansion. The IRPD spectra of mass selected C(6)H(7)O(+)-L(n) clusters obtained in various C(6)H(7)O(+)-L(m) fragment channels (m<n) display the unambiguous fingerprints of at least two different C(6)H(7)O(+) nucleation centers: the oxonium ion (5) and the carbenium ion(s) corresponding to protonation of phenol in ortho and/or para position (1/3). These two classes of C(6)H(7)O(+)-L(n) isomers show very different fragmentation behavior upon IR excitation, facilitating the assignment of the observed vibrational transitions. The vibrational frequency shifts as a function of cluster size reveal that the microsolvation of 1/3 and 5 in Ar and N(2) begins with the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bond(s) to the acidic OH group(s) and proceeds by the formation of intermolecular pi-bonds to the respective six-membered rings. The analysis of photofragmentation branching ratios yields estimated ligand binding energies of the intermolecular OH- and pi-bonds for solvation of the different C(6)H(7)O(+) isomers. The effects of microsolvation on the properties of 1/3 as reactive intermediates in electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions are discussed. Comparison of clusters of protonated phenol with those of neutral phenol reveals the drastic protonation-induced changes in the topology of the intermolecular potential of aromatic molecules interacting with a nonpolar solvent. Moreover, the results show that the IRPD process can be used to selectively generate a spectroscopically clean ion beam of either 1/3 or 5 with some control over their internal energies.
