Direct observation of self-assembled chain-like water structures in a nanoscopic water meniscus

Coil-to-Bridge Transitions of Self-Assembled Water Chains Observed in a Nanoscopic Meniscus

Ten downward portions in the large oscillatory force-distance curve reported earlier are analyzed to understand a nanoscale water meniscus confined between a sharp probe and a flat substrate in air. The sigmoidal shape of each portion leads to the assumption that the meniscus is made up of n independent transitions of two states: one for a coil state and the other for a bridge state. The analysis reveals that each downward portion occurs due to a coil-to-bridge transition of n self-assembled water chains whose length ranges between 197 and 383 chain units. The transition provides novel insights into water's unique properties like high surface tension and the long-range condensation distances.

Thick Two-Dimensional Water Film Confined between the Atomically Thin Mica Nanosheet and Hydrophilic Substrate

The interesting properties of water molecules confined in a two-dimensional (2D) environment have aroused great attention. However, the study of 2D-confined water at the hydrophilic-hydrophilic interface is largely unexplored due to the lack of appropriate system. In this work, the behavior of water molecules confined between an atomically thin mica nanosheet and a hydrophilic SiO₂/Si substrate was investigated using an atomic force microscope in detail at ambient conditions. The confined water molecules aggregated as droplets when the relative humidity (RH) of the environment was 11%. A large-area 2D water film with a uniform thickness of ∼2 nm was observed when the mica flake was incubated at 33% RH for 1 h before being mechanically exfoliated on a SiO₂/Si substrate. Interestingly, the water film showed ordered edges with a predominant angle of 120°, which was the same with the lattice orientation of the mica nanosheet on top of it. The water film showed a fluidic behavior at the early stage and reached a stable state after 48 h under ambient conditions. The surface properties of the upper mica nanosheet and the underlying substrate played a crucial role in manipulating the behavior of confined water molecules. When the surface of the upper mica nanosheet was modified by Na⁺, Ni²⁺_, and aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS), only some small water droplets were observed instead of a water film. The surface of the underlying SiO₂/Si substrate was functionalized by hydrophilic APS and hydrophobic octadecyltrimethoxysiliane (OTS). The small water droplets were imaged on a hydrophobic OTS-SiO₂/Si substrate, while the water film with regular edges was maintained on a hydrophilic APS-SiO₂/Si substrate. Our results might provide an alternative molecular view for investigating structures and properties of confined water molecules in 2D environments.

Contact Forces between Single Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in Gas-Phase Applications and Processes

In this work we present a comprehensive experimental study to determine the contact forces between individual metal oxide nanoparticles in the gas-phase using atomic force microscopy. In addition, we determined the amount of physisorbed water for each type of particle surface. By comparing our results with mathematical models of the interaction forces, we could demonstrate that classical continuum models of van der Waals and capillary forces alone cannot sufficiently describe the experimental findings. Rather, the discrete nature of the molecules has to be considered, which leads to ordering at the interface and the occurrence of solvation forces. We demonstrate that inclusion of solvation forces in the model leads to quantitative agreement with experimental data and that tuning of the molecular order by addition of isopropanol vapor allows us to control the interaction forces between the nanoparticles.

AFM investigation of effect of absorbed water layer structure on growth mechanism of octadecyltrichlorosilane self-assembled monolayer on oxidized silicon

The growth mechanism of an octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) self-assembled monolayer on a silicon oxide surface at various relative humidities has been investigated. Atomic force microscopy images show that excess water may actually hinder the nucleation and growth of OTS islands. A moderate amount of water is favorable for the nucleation and growth of OTS islands in the initial stage; however, the completion of the monolayer is very slow in the final stage. The growth of OTS islands on a low-water-content surface maintains a relatively constant speed and requires the least amount of time. The mobility of water molecules is thought to play an important role in the OTS monolayers, and a low-mobility water layer provides a steady condition for OTS monolayer growth.

Colloidal crystals and water: Perspectives on liquid-solid nanoscale phenomena in wet particulate media

Solid colloidal ensembles inherently contain water adsorbed from the ambient moisture. This water, confined in the porous network formed by the building submicron spheres, greatly affects the ensemble properties. Inversely, one can benefit from such influence on collective features to explore the water behavior in such nanoconfinements. Recently, novel approaches have been developed to investigate in-depth where and how water is placed in the nanometric pores of self-assembled colloidal crystals. Here, we summarize these advances, along with new ones, that are linked to general interfacial water phenomena like adsorption, capillary forces, and flow. Water-dependent structural properties of the colloidal crystal give clues to the interplay between nanoconfined water and solid fine particles that determines the behavior of ensembles. We elaborate on how the knowledge gained on water in colloidal crystals provides new opportunities for multidisciplinary study of interfacial and nanoconfined liquids and their essential role in the physics of utmost important systems such as particulate media.
