Abstract
Photoinduced SO(2) fixation on anatase TiO(2) films was studied by in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The TiO(2) films were prepared by reactive DC magnetron sputtering and were subsequently exposed to 50 ppm SO(2) gas mixed in synthetic air and irradiated with UV light at substrate temperatures between 298 and 673 K. Simultaneous UV irradiation and SO(2) exposure between 373 and 523 K resulted in significant sulfur (S) deposits on crystalline TiO(2) films as determined by XPS, whereas amorphous films contained negligible amounts of S. At substrate temperatures above 523 K, the S deposits readily desorbed from TiO(2). The oxidation state of sulfur successively changed from S(4+) for SO(2) adsorbed on crystalline TiO(2) films at room temperature without irradiation to S(6+) for films exposed to SO(2) at elevated temperatures with simultaneous irradiation. In situ FTIR was used to monitor the temporal evolution of the photoinduced surface reaction products formed on the TiO(2) surfaces. It is shown that band gap excitation of TiO(2) results in photoinduced oxidation of SO(2), which at elevated temperatures become coordinated to the TiO(2) lattice through interactions with O vacancies and form sulfite and sulfate surface species. These species makes the surface acidic, which is manifested in nondetectable adherence of stearic acid to the modified surface. The modified films show good chemical stability as evidenced by sonication and repeated recycling of the films. The results suggest a new method to functionalize wide band gap oxide surfaces by means of photoinduced reactions in reactive gases at elevated substrate temperatures. In the case of anatase TiO(2) in reactive SO(2) gas, we here show that such functionalization yields surfaces with excellent oleophobic properties, as probed by adhesion of stearic acid.

Abstract
This article tells of a lifelong fascination with light, a messenger bearing information from realms ranging from the galactic to the submicroscopic. Personal interactions have shaped and informed this life journey. Accounts of some of the most important of these are related. Infrared and electronic spectra have been obtained, often for the first time, for many small free radicals and molecular ions-short-lived reaction intermediates in most chemical processes. The infrared spectrum of a molecule tells how its atoms vibrate with respect to one another and is as characteristic of the molecule as a fingerprint is of a person. Analysis of this spectrum provides sometimes surprising information about the structure and chemical bonding of the molecule in its lowest-energy electronic state. The electronic spectrum provides information on the molecule in more highly excited electronic states, in which its structure or reaction pattern may change or it may decompose.

Abstract
The rate constants and product-ion branching ratios for the reactions of sulfur dioxide (SO2-), sulfur fluoride (SFn-), and sulfur oxyfluoride anions (SOxFy-) with H, H2, N, N2, NO, and O have been measured in a selected-ion flow tube (SIFT). H atoms were generated through a microwave discharge on a H2/He mixture, whereas O atoms were created via N atoms titrated with NO, where the N had been created by a microwave discharge on N2. None of the ions reacted with H2, N2 or NO; thus, the rate constants are <1 x 10(-12) cm3 s-1. SOxFy- ions react with H by only fluorine-atom abstraction to form HF at 298 and 500 K. Successive F-atom removal does not occur at either temperature, and the rate constants show no temperature dependence over this limited range. SO2- and F- undergo associative detachment with H to form a neutral molecule and an electron. Theoretical calculations of the structures and energetics of HSO2- isomers were performed and showed that structural differences between the ionic and neutral HSO2 species can account for at least part of the reactivity limitations in the SO2- + H reaction. All of the SOxFy- ions react with O; however, only SO2- reacts with both N and O. SOxFy- reactions with N (SO2- excluded) have a rate constant limit of <1 x 10(-11) cm3 s-1. The rate constants for the SOxFy- reactions with H and O are < or =25% of the collision rate constant, as seen previously in the reactions of these ions with O3, consistent with a kinetic bottleneck limiting the reactivity. The only exceptions are the reactions of SO2- with N and O, which are much more efficient. Three pathways were observed with O atoms: F-atom exchange in the reactant ion, F- exchange in the reactant ion, and charge transfer to the O atom. No associative detachment was observed in the N- and O-atom reactions.

Abstract
Using our newly built extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photoelectron and photoion spectrometer, we have obtained the pulsed field ionization zero kinetic energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectra of SO2+(X2A1)<--SO2(X1A1) by coherent XUV radiation in the energy range of 12.29-12.82 eV. The adiabatic ionization potential (IP) of SO2 is 12.3458+/-0.0002 (eV), which was determined by comparing the partially resolved rotational branch contour with the simulated one. Besides the bending vibrational mode (upsilon2) which was found to be exclusive in the photoelectron spectra (PE) reported previously, we also observed the other two modes: the symmetric stretching (upsilon1) and the antisymmetric stretching (upsilon3) vibrations. The fundamental of the symmetric stretching (upsilon(1)) is 1057 cm(-1) and the overtone of the antisymmetric stretching (2upsilon(3)) is 2494 cm(-1). The new vibrational progressions (upsilon(1)00)+, (1upsilon(2)0)+, (2upsilon(2)0)+, and (0upsilon(2)2)+ have also been observed, and these new observations suggested that the irregular structure of (0upsilon(2)0)+ assigned to the previous PE spectra should be reconsidered. The comparison of the intensities of these vibrational bands with the calculated Franck-Condon factors with harmonic approximation was also made.
