Abstract
We report an investigation on the structures and chemical bonding in a series of di-lanthanum boron clusters, La2Bn- (n = 4-6), using photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Well-resolved photoelectron spectra are obtained and used to verify the global minima of the lanthanide boron clusters. The structures of La2B4- and La2B5- are found to consist of open B4 and B5 rings, respectively, around the La2 dimer equatorially. Theoretical evidence of La-La σ bonding is obtained in La2B4-, whereas the bonding in La2B5- is similar to that of an incomplete inverse sandwich without real La-La bonding. The global minimum of La2B6- is completely different, where one of the La atoms can be viewed as substituting a B atom of the B7 cluster due to the high electronic stability of the B73- borozene. The resulting lanthaborozene [LaB6]3- forms a half-sandwich structure with the second La atom, with evidence of La-La σ bonding. Lanthanide-lanthanide bonds are relatively rare in chemistry. The current work suggests that binary lanthanide boron clusters provide interesting systems to study lanthanide-lanthanide bonding.

Abstract
Spontaneous symmetry-breaking is common in chemical and physical systems. Here, we show that by adding an electron to the C7v PbB8 cluster, which consists of a planar B8 disk with the Pb atom situated along the C7 axis, the Pb atom spontaneously moves to the off-axis position in the PbB8- anion. Photoelectron spectroscopy of PbB8- reveals a broad ground-state transition and a large energy gap, suggesting a highly stable closed-shell PbB8 borozene complex and a significant geometry change upon electron detachment. Quantum chemistry calculations indicate that the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the C7v PbB8 cluster is a degenerate π orbital mainly consisting of the Pb 6px and 6py atomic orbitals. Occupation of one of the 6p orbitals spontaneously break the C7v symmetry in the anion due to the Jahn-Teller effect. The large amplitude of the position change of Pb in PbB8- relative to PbB8 is surprising owing to bonding interactions between the Pb 6p orbital with the π orbital of the B8 borozene.

Abstract
Molecules with high point-group symmetry are interesting prototype species in the textbook. As transition metal-centered boron clusters tend to have highly symmetric structures to fulfill multicenter bonding and high stability, new boron clusters with rare point-group symmetry may be viable. Through in-depth scrutiny over the structures of experimentally already observed transition metal-centered boron-wheel complexes, geometric and electronic design principles are summarized, based on which we studied M©B11k- (M = Y, La; Zr, Hf; k = 1, 2) clusters and found that a Y©B112- boron-wheel complex has an unprecedented D11h point-group symmetry. The remarkable stability of the planar Y©B112- complex is illustrated via extensive global-minimum structural search as well as comprehensive chemical bonding analyses. Similar to other boron-wheel complexes, the Y©B112- complex is shown to possess σ and π double aromaticity, indeed following the electronic design principle previously summarized. This new compound is expected to be experimentally identified, which will extend the currently known largest possible planar molecular symmetry and enrich the metal-centered boron-wheel class.

Abstract
Boron has been found to be able to form multiple bonds with lead. To probe Pb-B bonding, here we report an investigation of three Pb-doped boron clusters, PbB2-, PbB3O-, and PbB4O2-, which are produced by a laser ablation cluster source and characterized by photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The most stable structures of PbB2-, PbB3O-, and PbB4O2- are found to follow the formula, [PbB2(BO)n]- (n = 0-2), with zero, one, and two boronyl ligands coordinated to a triangular and aromatic PbB2 core, respectively. The PbB2- cluster contains a BB double bond and two Pb-B single bonds. The coordination of BO is observed to weaken Pb-B bonding but strengthen the BB bond in [PbB2(BO)n]- (n = 1, 2). The anionic [PbB2(BO)2]- and its corresponding neutral closed-shell [PbB2(BO)2] contain a BB triple bond. A low-lying Y-shaped isomer is also observed for PbB4O2-, consisting of a central sp2 hybridized B atom bonded to two boronyl ligands and a PbB unit.

Abstract
Being intermediate between small compounds and bulk materials, nanoparticles possess unique properties different from those of atoms, molecules, and bulk matter. In the past two decades, a combination of cluster structure prediction algorithms and experimental spectroscopy techniques was successfully used for exploration of the ground-state structures of pure and metal-doped boron clusters. The fruitfulness of this dual approach is well illustrated by the discovery of intriguing microstructures and unique physicochemical properties such as aromaticity and bond fluxionality for both boron and metal-doped boron clusters. Our review starts with an overview of geometrical configurations of pure boron clusters Bn, which are presented by planar, nanotube, bilayer, fullerene-like and core-shell structures, in a wide range ofnvalues. We consider next recent advances in studies of boron clusters doped with metal atoms paying close and thoughtful attention to modifications of geometric and electronic structures of pure boron clusters by heteroatoms. Finally, we discuss the possibility of constructing boron-based nanomaterials with specific functions from metal-boron clusters. Despite a variety of fruitful results obtained in numerous studies of boron clusters, the exploration of boron-based chemistry has not yet reached its peak. The intensive research continues in this area, and it should be expected that it brings exciting discoveries of intriguing new structures.

Abstract
The bond dissociation energies of early transition metal diborides (M-B2, M = Sc, Ti, V, Y, Mo) have been measured by observation of the sharp onset of predissociation in a highly congested spectrum. Density functional and CCSD(T) ab initio calculations, extrapolated to the complete basis set limit, have been used to examine the electronic structure of these species. The computations demonstrate the formation of bonding orbitals between the metal d orbitals and the 1πu bonding orbitals of B2, leading to the transfer of metallic electron density into the bonding 1πu orbitals, strengthening both the M-B and B-B bonds in the molecule. This runs counter to most metal-ligand π interactions, where electron density is generally transferred into π antibonding orbitals of the ligand.

Abstract
Photoelectron spectroscopy combined with quantum chemistry has been a powerful approach to elucidate the structures and bonding of size-selected boron clusters (Bn-), revealing a prevalent planar world that laid the foundation for borophenes. Investigations of metal-doped boron clusters not only lead to novel structures but also provide important information about the metal-boron bonds that are critical to understanding the properties of boride materials. The current review focuses on recent advances in transition-metal-doped boron clusters, including the discoveries of metal-boron multiple bonds and metal-doped novel aromatic boron clusters. The study of the RhB- and RhB2O- clusters led to the discovery of the first quadruple bond between boron and a transition-metal atom, whereas a metal-boron triple bond was found in ReB2O- and IrB2O-. The ReB4- cluster was shown to be the first metallaborocycle with Möbius aromaticity, and the planar ReB6- cluster was found to exhibit aromaticity analogous to metallabenzenes. Expected final online publication date for the Annual Review of Physical Chemistry, Volume 73 is April 2022. Please see http://www.annualreviews.org/page/journal/pubdates for revised estimates.

Abstract
In the last decades, experimental techniques in conjunction with theoretical analyses have revealed the surprising structural diversity of boron clusters. Although the 2D to 3D transition thresholds are well-established, there is no certainty about the factors that determine the geometry adopted by these systems. The structural transformation induced by doping usually yields a minimum energy structure with a boron skeleton entirely different from that of the bare cluster. This review summarizes those clusters no larger than 40 boron atoms where one or two dopants show a radical transformation of the structure. Although the structures of these systems are not easy to predict, they often adopt familiar shapes such as umbrella-like, wheel, tubular, and cages in various cases.

Abstract
Transition-metal-centered monocyclic boron wheels are important candidates in the family of planar hypercoordinate species that show intriguing structure, stability and bonding situation. Through the detailed potential energy surface explorations of MB9− (M = Fe, Ru, Os) clusters, we introduce herein OsB9− to be a new member in the transition-metal-centered borometallic molecular wheel gallery. Previously, FeB9− and RuB9− clusters were detected by photoelectron spectroscopy and the structures were reported to have singlet D9h symmetry. Our present results show that the global minimum for FeB9− has a molecular wheel-like structure in triplet spin state with Cs symmetry, whereas its heavier homologues are singlet molecular wheels with D9h symmetry. Chemical bonding analyses show that RuB9− and OsB9− display a similar type of electronic structure, where the dual σ + π aromaticity, originated from three delocalized σ bonds and three delocalized π bonds, accounts for highly stable borometallic molecular wheels.

Abstract
Since the discovery of metal-doped boron clusters attracted great significance to create a new class of materials, research interests have been directed to chemical bonding and structural evolution of lanthanide boride clusters. Here, we perform an extensive ground-state structure search for the CeBn and CeBn- clusters in the size range from 9 to 18 using the Crystal structure AnaLYsis by Particle Swarm Optimization method and density functional theory optimization. It is found that the ground-state structures in both neutral and anionic series possess half-sandwich geometry. The host boron moiety in neutral series has a tendency to form borophene-like geometry. The pentagonal and hexagonal holes are more common in the larger anionic CeBn- series. The theoretical photoelectron spectroscopy has been simulated by applying time-dependent density functional theory calculations. The neutral CeB14 cluster is identified as a magic cluster on the basis of its robust relative stability with respect to its neighbors. Electronic structure and chemical bonding analyses reveal that the CeB14 cluster possesses a large HOMO-LUMO gap and enhanced stability with strong delocalized π and δ bonding via interactions between the Ce 5d- and B 2p-AOs.

Abstract
Elemental boron clusters do not form linear chain or monocyclic ring structures, which is in contrast to carbon. Based on computer global searches and quantum chemical calculations, we report on the viability of a curved boron single chain in binary Be6B7- cluster. The boron motif assumes a bow shape, being anchored on a Be6 prism. Such a motif, which appears to be highly strained in its free-standing form, is exotic in boron-based clusters and nanostructures. Chemically, the cluster is analogous to a "clam-and-pearl-chain" system at the nanoscale (about 1 nm in size), in which a Be6 clam moderately opens its mouth, except that a B7 pearl chain is too large to be encapsulated inside. The picture differs from a three-layered sandwich. This cluster features a hybrid Be2B7 monocyclic ring, which is octagonal in nature and supports double 10π/6σ aromaticity. The number of π bonds substantially surpasses that in bare boron clusters of similar sizes. Two Be3 rings in the prism are also σ aromatic, albeit with effective 1σ/1σ electron-counting only. The unique multifold 1σ/10π/6σ/1σ aromaticity governs the geometry of the Be6B7- cluster, which can also be rationalized using the concept of dual electronic transmutation.

Abstract
Transition-metal-doped boron nanoclusters exhibit interesting structures and bonding. Inspired by the experimentally discovered inverse sandwich D6h Ta2B6 and spherical trihedral D3h La3B18− and based on extensive first-principles theory calculations, we predict herein the structural transition from perfect di-metal-doped inverse sandwich D7h Ta2B7+ (1) and D8h Ta2B8 (2) to tri-metal-doped spherical trihedral D3h Ta3B12− (3). As the smallest metallo-borospherene reported to date, Ta3B12− (3) contains three octa-coordinate Ta atoms as integral parts of the cage surface coordinated in three equivalent η8-B8 rings which share two eclipsed equilateral B3 triangles on the top and bottom interconnected by three B2 units on the waist. Detailed orbital and bonding analyses indicate that both Ta2B7+ (1) and Ta2B8 (2) possess σ + π dual aromaticity, while Ta3B12− (3) is σ + π + δ triply aromatic in nature. The IR, Raman, and UV-vis or photoelectron spectra of the concerned species are computationally simulated to facilitate their future spectroscopic characterizations. Structural transition from inverse sandwich Ta2B7+ (1) and Ta2B8 (2) with σ + π dual aromaticity to the smallest metallo-borospherene D3h Ta3B12− (3) which is σ + π + δ triply aromatic in nature.![]()

Abstract
The B3 triangular unit is a fundamental bonding motif in all boron compounds and nanostructures. The isolated B3 - cluster has a D3h structure with double σ and π aromaticity. Here, we report an investigation of the bonding between a B3 cluster and a 3d transition metal using high-resolution photoelectron imaging and computational chemistry. Photoelectron spectra of MnB3 - are obtained at six different photon energies, revealing rich vibrational information for the ground state detachment transition. The electron affinity of MnB3 is determined to be 1.6756(8) eV, and the most Franck-Condon-active mode observed has a measured frequency of 415(6) cm-1 due to the Mn-B3 stretch. Theoretical calculations show that MnB3 - has a C2v planar structure, with Mn coordinated to one side of the triangular B3 unit. The ground states of MnB3 - (6B2) and MnB3 (5B2) are found to have high spin multiplicity with a significant decrease in the Mn-B bond distances in the neutral due to the detachment of an Mn-B3 anti-bonding electron. The Mn atom is shown to have weak interactions with the B3 unit, which maintains its double aromaticity with relatively small structural changes from the bare B3 cluster. The bonding in MnB3 is compared with that in 5d MB3 clusters, where the strong metal-B3 interactions strongly change the structures and bonding in the B3 moiety.

Abstract
In recent years, actinide containing clusters have attracted immense attention because of the distinctive bonding properties of their 5f and 6d electrons. In this context, in the present work, we have studied the isoelectronic series of actinide (An = Np+, Pu2+, Am3+) doped B12H122- and Al12H122- clusters using density functional theory (DFT). Similarly, corresponding isoelectronic lanthanide (Ln = Pm+, Sm2+, Eu3+) doped clusters are also investigated using DFT for comparison. Both exohedral and endohedral metal doped Al12H122- clusters are investigated in various possible spin states, whereas for B12H122- only exohedral metal doped clusters are studied due to its smaller cage diameter. Among all the metal doped clusters, the exohedral metal doped B12H122- and Al12H122- clusters in a septet spin state with retained high spin population on the doped actinide ion, are the most stable, indicating that all these doped clusters are magnetic in nature. The high stability of exohedral clusters is due to small steric repulsion as compared to that in the corresponding endohedral clusters. A prominent charge transfer from cage to metal ion is responsible for the strong interaction of the doped metal ion with the cage atoms. The studied Ln@B12H122- (Ln@Al12H122-) and An@B12H122- (An@Al12H122-) clusters are not only thermodynamically stable, but also kinetically stable. Metal ion encapsulated endohedral Al12H122- clusters are found to satisfy the 32-electron principle corresponding to the completely filled s, p, d and f shells of the central f-block atom. Theoretical predictions of these lanthanide and actinide doped stable B12H122- and Al12H122- clusters could encourage experimentalists for the preparation of these metal-doped clusters. Thus, the present work offers borane and alane clusters as new hosts for encapsulating radioactive actinides. Furthermore, various functional derivatives of these actinide doped B12H122- clusters may find applications in the field of radiation medicine.

Abstract
Metallabenzenes are a class of molecules in which a CH unit in benzene is replaced by a functionalized transition-metal atom. While all-boron analogues of aromatic and antiaromatic hydrocarbons are well-known, there have not been any metallaboron analogs. We have produced and investigated two metal-doped boron clusters, ReB6- and AlB6-, using high-resolution photoelectron imaging and quantum chemical calculations. Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra have been obtained and compared with the theoretical results. The ReB6- cluster is found to be perfectly planar with a B-centered hexagonal structure (C2v, 1A1), while AlB6- is known to have a similar structure, but with a slightly out-of-plane distortion (Cs, 1A'). Chemical bonding analyses show that the closed-shell ReB6- is doubly σ- and π-aromatic, while AlB6- is known to be σ-aromatic and π-antiaromatic. The out-of-plane distortion in AlB6- is due to antiaromaticity, akin to the out-of-plane distortion of the prototypical antiaromatic cyclooctatetraene. The π-bonding in ReB6- is compared with that in both benzene and rhenabenzene [(CO)4ReC5H5], and remarkable similarities are found. Hence, ReB6- can be viewed as the first metallaboron analog of metallabenzenes and it may be viable for syntheses with suitable ligands.

Abstract
Transition-metal-centered monocyclic boron wheel clusters (M©B n q) represent a family of interesting borometallic compounds with double aromaticity. A variety of early and late transition metal atoms have been found to form such structures with high symmetries and various B n ring sizes. Here we report a combined photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum-chemistry theoretical study of two M©B n- clusters from the middle of the transition metal series: Re©B8- and Re©B9-. Global minimum structure searches revealed that ReB8- adopts a pseudo- C8 v structure while ReB9- is a perfectly planar D9 h molecular wheel. Chemical bonding analyses showed that both clusters exhibit σ and π double aromaticity and obey the electronic design principle for metal-centered borometallic molecular wheels. The central Re atoms are found to possess unusually low oxidation states of +I in Re©B8- and +II in Re©B9-, i.e., the Re atom behaves similarly to late transition metal elements (Ru, Fe, Co, Rh, Ir) in the M©B n- molecular wheels. These two clusters become new members of the family of transition-metal-centered monocyclic borometallic molecular wheels, which may be viable for chemical syntheses with appropriate ligands.

Abstract
In a high-resolution photoelectron imaging and theoretical study of the IrB3 - cluster, two isomers were observed experimentally with electron affinities (EAs) of 1.3147(8) and 1.937(4) eV. Quantum calculations revealed two nearly degenerate isomers competing for the global minimum, both with a B3 ring coordinated with the Ir atom. The isomer with the higher EA consists of a B3 ring with a bridge-bonded Ir atom (Cs , 2 A'), and the second isomer features a tetrahedral structure (C3v , 2 A1 ). The neutral tetrahedral structure was predicted to be considerably more stable than all other isomers. Chemical bonding analysis showed that the neutral C3v isomer involves significant covalent Ir-B bonding and weak ionic bonding with charge transfer from B3 to Ir, and can be viewed as an Ir-(η3 -B3 + ) complex. This study provides the first example of a boron-to-metal charge-transfer complex and evidence of a π-aromatic B3 + ring coordinated to a transition metal.

Abstract
Despite the importance of bulk lanthanide borides, nanoclusters of lanthanide and boron have rarely been investigated. Here we show that lanthanide-boron binary clusters, La2B x -, can form a new class of inverse-sandwich complexes, [Ln(η x -B x )Ln]- (x = 7-9). Joint experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the monocyclic B x rings in the inverse sandwiches display similar bonding, consisting of three delocalized σ and three delocalized π bonds. Such monocyclic boron rings do not exist for bare boron clusters, but they are stabilized by the sandwiching lanthanide atoms. An electron counting rule is proposed to predict the sizes of the B x ring that can form stable inverse sandwiches. A unique (d-p)δ bond is found to play important roles in the stability of all three inverse-sandwich complexes.

Abstract
Because of their interesting structures and bonding and potentials as motifs for new nanomaterials, size-selected boron clusters have received tremendous interest in recent years. In particular, boron cluster anions (Bn-) have allowed systematic joint photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical studies, revealing predominantly two-dimensional structures. The discovery of the planar B36 cluster with a central hexagonal vacancy provided the first experimental evidence of the viability of 2D borons, giving rise to the concept of borophene. The finding of the B40 cage cluster unveiled the existence of fullerene-like boron clusters (borospherenes). Metal-doping can significantly extend the structural and bonding repertoire of boron clusters. Main-group metals interact with boron through s/p orbitals, resulting in either half-sandwich-type structures or substitutional structures. Transition metals are more versatile in bonding with boron, forming a variety of structures including half-sandwich structures, metal-centered boron rings, and metal-centered boron drums. Transition metal atoms have also been found to be able to be doped into the plane of 2D boron clusters, suggesting the possibility of metalloborophenes. Early studies of di-metal-doped boron clusters focused on gold, revealing ladder-like boron structures with terminal gold atoms. Recent observations of highly symmetric Ta2B6- and Ln2Bn- (n = 7-9) clusters have established a family of inverse sandwich structures with monocyclic boron rings stabilized by two metal atoms. The study of size-selected boron and doped-boron clusters is a burgeoning field of research. Further investigations will continue to reveal more interesting structures and novel chemical bonding, paving the foundation for new boron-based chemical compounds and nanomaterials.

Abstract
We performed a systematic investigation on silicon-doped boron clusters BnSi (n = 8-14) in both neutral and anionic states using quantum chemical methods. Thermochemical properties of the lowest-lying isomers of BnSi(0/-) clusters such as total atomization energies, heats of formation at 0 and 298 K, average binding energies, dissociation energies, etc. were evaluated by using the composite G4 method. The growth pattern for BnSi(0/-) with n = 8-14 is established as follows: (i) BnSi(0/-) clusters tend to be constructed by substituting B atom by Si-atom or adding one Si-impurity into the parent Bn clusters with n to be even number, and (ii) Si favors an external position of the Bn frameworks. Our theoretical results reveal that B8Si, B9Si(-), B10Si and B13Si(-) are systems with enhanced stability due to having high average binding energies, second-order difference in energies and dissociation energies. Especially, by analyzing the MOs, ELF, and ring current maps, the enhanced stability of B8Si can be rationalized in terms of a triple aromaticity.
