Broadband dynamics in neat 4-methyl-3-heptanol and in mixtures with 2-ethyl-1-hexanol

Dielectric and Shear Mechanical Spectra of Propanols: The Influence of Hydrogen-Bonded Structures

We present a dielectric and shear mechanical study of 1-propanol and three phenylpropanols. Contrary to other monoalcohols, the phenylpropanols do not show a bimodal behavior in their dielectric response, but instead show a single, rather narrow process. Combined dielectric and light scattering spectra (Böhmer, T.; et al. J. Phys. Chem. B 2019, 123, 10959) have shown that this single peak may be separated into a self- and a cross-correlation part, thus indicating that phenylpropanols do display features originating from hydrogen-bonded structures. The shear mechanical spectra support that interpretation, demonstrating a subtle, yet clear, low-frequency polymer-like mode, similar to what is found in other monoalcohols. An analysis of the characteristic time scales found in the spectra shows that shear alpha relaxation is faster than the dielectric alpha and that time scale separation of the dielectric Debye and alpha processes is temperature independent and nearly identical in all the phenylpropanols.

Nuclear Spin Relaxation in Viscous Liquids: Relaxation Stretching of Single-Particle Probes

Spin-lattice relaxation rates R₁(ω,T), probed via high-field and field-cycling nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), are used to test the validity of frequency-temperature superposition (FTS) for the reorientation dynamics in viscous liquids. For several liquids, FTS is found to apply so that master curves can be generated. The susceptibility spectra are highly similar to those obtained from depolarized light scattering (DLS) and reveal an excess wing. Where FTS works, two approaches are suggested to access the susceptibility: (i) a plot of deuteron R₁(T) vs the spin-spin relaxation rate R₂(T) and (ii) a plot of R₁(T) vs an independently measured reference time τ_ref(T). Using single-frequency scans, (i) allows one to extract the relaxation stretching as well as the NMR coupling constant. Surveying 26 data sets, we find Kohlrausch functions with exponents 0.39 < β_K ≤ 0.67. Plots of the spin-spin relaxation rate R₂─rescaled by the NMR coupling constant─as a function of temperature allow one to test how well site-specific NMR relaxations couple to a given reference process. Upon cooling of flexible molecule liquids, the site-specific dynamics is found to merge, suggesting that near T_g the molecules reorient essentially as a rigid entity. This presents a possible resolution for the much lower stretching parameters reported here at high temperatures that contrast with the ones that were reported to be universal in a recent DLS study close to T_g. Our analysis underlines that deuteron relaxation is a uniquely powerful tool to probe single-particle reorientation.

Effect of confinement on the dynamics of 1-propanol and other monohydroxy alcohols

We report the effect of confinement on the dynamics of three monohydroxy alcohols (1-propanol, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, and 4-methyl-3-heptanol) differing in their chemical structure and, consequently, in the dielectric strength of the "Debye" process. Density functional theory calculations in bulk 1-propanol identified both linear and ring-like associations composed of up to five repeat units. The simulation results revealed that the ring structures, with a low dipole moment (∼2 D), are energetically preferred over the linear assemblies with a dipole moment of 2.18 D per repeat unit. Under confinement in nanoporous alumina (in templates with pore diameters ranging from 400 to 20 nm), all dynamic processes were found to speed up irrespective of the molecular architecture. The characteristic freezing temperatures of the α and the Debye-like processes followed the pore size dependence: T_a,D=T_a,D ^bulk-A/d^1/2, where d is the pore diameter. The characteristic "freezing" temperatures for the Debye-like (the slow process for confined 1-propanol is non-Debye) and the α-processes decrease, respectively, by 6.5 and 13 K in confined 1-propanol, by 9.5 and 19 K in confined 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, and by 9 and 23 K in confined 4-methyl-3-heptanol within the same 25 nm pores. In 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, confinement reduced the number of linearly associated repeats from approximately heptamers in the bulk to dimers within 25 pores. In addition, the slower process in bulk 2-ethyl-1-hexanol and 4-methyl-3-heptanol, where the signal is dominated by ring-like supramolecular assemblies, is clearly non-Debye. The results suggest that the effect of confinement is dominant in the latter assemblies.

Isomeric effects in structure formation and dielectric dynamics of different octanols

The understanding of the microstructure of associated liquids promoted by hydrogen-bonding and constrained by steric hindrance is highly relevant in chemistry, physics, biology and for many aspects of daily life. In this study we use a combination of X-ray diffraction, dielectric spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations to reveal temperature induced changes in the microstructure of different octanol isomers, i.e., linear 1-octanol and branched 2-, 3- and 4-octanol. In all octanols, the hydroxyl groups form the basis of chain-, cyclic- or loop-like bonded structures that are separated by outwardly directed alkyl chains. This clustering is analyzed through the scattering pre-peaks observed from X-ray scattering and simulations. The charge ordering which pilots OH aggregation can be linked to the strength of the Debye process observed in dielectric spectroscopy. Interestingly, all methods used here converge to the same interpretation: as one moves from 1-octanol to the branched octanols, the cluster structure evolves from loose large aggregates to a larger number of smaller, tighter aggregates. All alcohols exhibit a peculiar temperature dependence of both the pre-peak and Debye process, which can be understood as a change in microstructure promoted by chain association with increased chain length possibly assisted by ring-opening effects. All these results tend to support the intuitive picture of the entropic constraint provided by branching through the alkyl tails and highlight its capital entropic role in supramolecular assembly.

Impact of chirality on the amorphous state of conglomerate forming systems: a case study of N-acetyl-α-methylbenzylamine

The present work aims at addressing the issue of molecular handedness in glassy and liquid states and its impact on heterogeneous equilibrium. For this purpose, we evaluated the glass forming ability (GFA), crystallization propensity, molecular mobility and hydrogen bonding structure of a chiral conglomerate forming system, N-acetyl-α-methylbenzylamine (Nac-MBA), at various enantiomeric excesses (ees) using experimental and computational techniques. We revealed that the rich relaxational landscape (Debye (D), α, β_JG and ϒ) and the temperature dependence of the time scale of each process were insensitive to chirality. The most remarkable impact of chirality was expressed on the GFA and the recrystallization of heterochiral arrangements. In fact the GFA increases with decreasing ee, while the crystallization propensity increases with increasing ee. The counter enantiomer acted as a disruptor of crystallization and favored the glass formation upon cooling. The molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) results on the architecture of chiral sequences showed that homochiral sequences were more favorable when compared to heterochiral ones in the liquid state. However, this predisposition to form homochiral sequences in the liquid state was not the precursor of the future crystalline structure, since the liquid or the glassy system recrystallizes as heterochiral sequences. As per our understanding the crystallization was mostly controlled by the mean free migration path of an enantiomer to build homochiral or heterochiral sequences. In the present case, it seems that the mean free migration path achieved by an enantiomer for heterochiral sequences is shorter compared to homochiral arrangements in such a way that the crystallization of the metastable racemic compound is kinetically more favorable.

Unusual Debye relaxation in 4-methyl-2-pentanol evidenced by high-pressure dielectric studies

The Debye relaxation is the main signal in the dielectric measurements of monoalcohols arising from the hydrogen-bonded superstructures, but its physics remains to be cleared. In this work, a monoalcohol of 4-methyl-2-pentanol is studied using dielectric spectroscopies recorded at high pressures. The dynamic parameters of the Debye and structural relaxations are extracted. The calculation of the Kirkwood factor of the Debye relaxation indicates chain-like H-bond molecular configurations. Remarkably, we found that both ratios of the relaxation strength and relaxation time between the Debye and structural dynamics, Δε _D/Δε _α and τ _D/τ _α , decreases upon compression, indicating a positive correlation. This is different from the results reported in primary 2-ethyl-1-hexanol and secondary 4-methyl-3-heptanol, where the two ratios are inversely correlated. The discussion and interpretation of these different results are provided.

Deep Eutectic Solvents: A Review of Fundamentals and Applications

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are an emerging class of mixtures characterized by significant depressions in melting points compared to those of the neat constituent components. These materials are promising for applications as inexpensive "designer" solvents exhibiting a host of tunable physicochemical properties. A detailed review of the current literature reveals the lack of predictive understanding of the microscopic mechanisms that govern the structure-property relationships in this class of solvents. Complex hydrogen bonding is postulated as the root cause of their melting point depressions and physicochemical properties; to understand these hydrogen bonded networks, it is imperative to study these systems as dynamic entities using both simulations and experiments. This review emphasizes recent research efforts in order to elucidate the next steps needed to develop a fundamental framework needed for a deeper understanding of DESs. It covers recent developments in DES research, frames outstanding scientific questions, and identifies promising research thrusts aligned with the advancement of the field toward predictive models and fundamental understanding of these solvents.

Influence of Annealing in the Close Vicinity of Tg on the Reorganization within Dimers and Its Impact on the Crystallization Kinetics of Gemfibrozil

In this paper, broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) has been applied to study the molecular dynamics and crystallization kinetics of the antihyperlipidemic active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), gemfibrozil (GEM), as well as its deuterated (dGEM) and methylated (metGEM) derivatives, characterized by different types and strengths of intermolecular interactions. Moreover, calorimetric and infrared measurements have been carried out to characterize the thermal properties of examined samples and to probe a change in the H-bonding pattern in GEM, respectively. We found that the dielectric spectra of all examined compounds, collected below the glass transition temperature (T_g), reveal the presence of two secondary relaxations (β, γ). According to the coupling model (CM) predictions, it was assumed that the slower process (β) is of JG type, whereas the faster one (γ) has an intramolecular origin. Interestingly, the extensive crystallization kinetics measurements performed after applying two paths, i.e., the standard procedure (cooling and subsequently heating up to the appropriate temperature, T_c), as well as annealing at two temperatures in the vicinity of T_g and further heating up to T_c, showed that the annealing increases the crystallization rate in the case of native API, while the thermal history of the sample has no significant impact on the pace of this process in the two derivatives of GEM. Analysis of the dielectric strength (Δε) of the α-process during annealing, together with the results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements, suggested that the reorganization within dimeric structures formed between the GEM molecules is responsible for the observed behavior. Importantly, our results differ from those obtained by Tominaka et al. (Tominaka, S.; Kawakami, K.; Fukushima, M.; Miyazaki, A.Physical Stabilization of Pharmaceutical Glasses Based on Hydrogen Bond Reorganization under Sub-T_g Temperature Mol. Pharm. 2017 14 264 273 10.1021/acs.molpharmaceut.6b00866.), who demonstrated that the sub-T_g annealing of ritonavir (RTV), which is able to form extensive supramolecular hydrogen bonds, protects this active substance against crystallization. Therefore, based on these contradictory reports, one can hypothesize that materials forming H-bonded structures, characterized by varying architecture, may behave differently after annealing in the vicinity of the glass transition temperature.

Studying structural and local dynamics in model H-bonded active ingredient - Curcumin in the supercooled and glassy states at various thermodynamic conditions

Different experimental techniques were applied to study thermal and structural properties, strength of H-bonds, possible keto-enol tautomerism and molecular dynamics at various thermodynamic conditions in the H-bonded active substance, curcumin (CRM). Dielectric measurements revealed dynamical features of examined compound that are uncharacteristic for the associated systems. This includes enormously large pressure coefficient of the glass transition temperature and prominent drop of the fragility with compression. Simultaneously, the shape of α-process slightly broadened at elevated pressures. Infrared investigations demonstrated that this effect is related to the variation in the population of H-bonds. Moreover, we studied the changes in the structural and dynamical properties of the glasses prepared upon cooling of the melt (ordinary glass, OG) and the one obtained after compression of CRM in the liquid phase and decompression at T = 293 K (dense glass, DG). Interestingly, during the aging of the latter sample, a clear shift of the β-relaxation towards higher frequencies was noted. This unexpected result indicated that the density of DG is probably getting smaller with time. Complementary X-ray diffraction experiments confirmed this supposition. Additionally, they showed that in DG there are traces of polymorph II of CRM that has a higher density than initial crystals (polymorph I). Finally, infrared studies demonstrated that H-bond pattern in DG is slightly different with respect to OG. Furthermore, Raman investigations suggested that probably keto-enol tautomerism might be shifted towards diketo form in the glass obtained at high compression. Our investigations are very interesting in the context of better understanding of the behavior of associated systems at high compression as well as provide a better insight into dynamics of higher density glasses produced at elevated pressures.

Coexistence of two structural relaxation processes in monohydroxy alcohol-alkyl halogen mixtures: Dielectric and rheological studies

Evidence for the existence of two glass transitions is found in binary mixtures of monohydroxy alcohols with an aprotic alkyl halide by means of dielectric spectroscopy and, markedly, also shear rheology. In the mechanical data, an enormous separation of two components becomes obvious for suitable compositions. The observation of bimodal motional heterogeneity is possible despite the fact that the glass transition temperatures of these substances differ by only 40 K. Obviously, the hydrogen-bond driven formation of supramolecular structures in one of the mixture components facilitates the emergence of dynamic contrast which for other binary liquids was so far only observed in the presence of much larger glass transition temperature differences.

Associating Imidazoles: Elucidating the Correlation between the Static Dielectric Permittivity and Proton Conductivity

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy is employed to investigate the impact of supramolecular structure on charge transport and dynamics in hydrogen-bonded 2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole and 4-methylimidazole. Detailed analyses reveal (i) an inverse relationship between the average supramolecular chain length and proton conductivity and (ii) no direct correlation between the static dielectric permittivity and proton conductivity in imidazoles. These findings raise fundamental questions regarding the widespread notion that extended supramolecular hydrogen-bonded networks facilitate proton conduction in hydrogen bonding materials.

Modifying hydrogen-bonded structures by physical vapor deposition: 4-methyl-3-heptanol

We prepared films of 4-methyl-3-heptanol by vapor depositing onto substrates held at temperatures between T_dep = 0.6T_g and T_g, where T_g is the glass transition temperature. Using deposition rates between 0.9 and 6.0 nm/s, we prepared films about 5 μm thick and measured the dielectric properties via an interdigitated electrode cell onto which films were deposited. Samples prepared at T_dep = T_g display the dielectric behavior of the ordinary supercooled liquid. Films deposited at lower deposition temperatures show a high dielectric loss upon heating toward T_g, which decreases by a factor of about 12 by annealing at T_g = 162 K. This change is consistent with either a drop of the Kirkwood correlation factor, g_k, by a factor of about 10, or an increase in the dielectric relaxation times, both being indicative of changes toward ring-like hydrogen-bonded structure characteristic of the ordinary liquid. We rationalize the high dielectric relaxation amplitude in the vapor deposited glass by suggesting that depositions at low temperature provide insufficient time for molecules to form ring-like supramolecular structures for which dipole moments cancel. Surprisingly, above T_g of the ordinary liquid, these vapor deposited films fail to completely recover the dielectric properties of the liquid obtained by supercooling. Instead, the dielectric relaxation remains slower and its amplitude much higher than that of the equilibrium liquid state, indicative of a structure that differs from the equilibrium liquid up to at least T_g + 40 K.

The peculiar behavior of the molecular dynamics of a glass-forming liquid confined in native porous materials - the role of negative pressure

In this paper, we combine Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS) at ambient and high pressure, and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) data of 2-ethylhexanol in the bulk state and when infiltrated in native silica nanopores to elucidate the relative role of surface effects on the Debye and structural relaxation processes under 2D spatial constraints. We show that the two processes have different sensitivities to (i) the changes in density as quantified by the EV/Hp ratio and (ii) the degree of confinement. Significant enhancement of the dynamics of the confined molecules at low temperatures is related to the vitrification of the interfacial molecules (Tg,int) affecting the packing density of the core molecules. This is corroborated by the PALS measurements, which demonstrated that the effective volume for the confined samples is slightly higher and seems to be temperature invariant below Tg,int. Consequently, negative pressure systematically develops with lowering temperature reaching values of -100 and -110 MPa (depending on the pore size) at the glass transition temperature. This result offers a better understanding of the counterbalance between surface and finite size effects as well as the role of negative pressure in controlling the dynamics and the glass transition of liquids under 2D spatial restrictions.

Liquid 1-propanol studied by neutron scattering, near-infrared, and dielectric spectroscopy

Liquid monohydroxy alcohols exhibit unusual dynamics related to their hydrogen bonding induced structures. The connection between structure and dynamics is studied for liquid 1-propanol using quasi-elastic neutron scattering, combining time-of-flight and neutron spin-echo techniques, with a focus on the dynamics at length scales corresponding to the main peak and the pre-peak of the structure factor. At the main peak, the structural relaxation times are probed. These correspond well to mechanical relaxation times calculated from literature data. At the pre-peak, corresponding to length scales related to H-bonded structures, the relaxation times are almost an order of magnitude longer. According to previous work [C. Gainaru, R. Meier, S. Schildmann, C. Lederle, W. Hiller, E. Rössler, and R. Böhmer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 258303 (2010)] this time scale difference is connected to the average size of H-bonded clusters. The relation between the relaxation times from neutron scattering and those determined from dielectric spectroscopy is discussed on the basis of broad-band permittivity data of 1-propanol. Moreover, in 1-propanol the dielectric relaxation strength as well as the near-infrared absorbance reveal anomalous behavior below ambient temperature. A corresponding feature could not be found in the polyalcohols propylene glycol and glycerol.
