Structure, stability, and electronic property of carbon-doped gold clusters AunC− (n = 1–10): A density functional theory study

Exploring the Effects of a Doping Silver Atom on Anionic Gold Clusters' Reactivity with O2

Reactivities of AgAu_n-1^- (n = 3-10) with O₂ at a low temperature were studied using an instrument combining a magnetron sputter cluster source, a microflow reactor, and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Their reaction products as well as size-dependent kinetic rates were nearly identical to those of corresponding Au_n^- (n = 3-10). Previous experiments showed that the Ag atom in AgAu_n-1^- (n = 3-10) was fully or partially enclosed by the gold atoms. We studied the adsorption of O₂ on these reported structures using the B3LYP theory with relatively large basis sets. The theoretical results indicate that the adsorption sites as well as the adsorption energies of O₂ on AgAu_n-1^- (n = 3-10) are nearly identical to those on the corresponding Au_n^- (n = 3-10). The O₂ adsorption on a series of proposed isomers of AgAu_n-1^- (denoted as Au_n-1Ag^-), in which the silver atom was on the protruding site, was explored using the same theoretical methods. The O₂ tends to bond with the protruding Ag atoms, and the binding energies are apparently higher than those on the corresponding Au_n^- and AgAu_n-1^-. The adsorption and activation of O₂ on Au_n^-, AgAu_n-1^-, and Au_n-1Ag^- were correlated with their global electron detachment energies (VDEs) as well as the element types of the adsorption sites. Generally, low VDE values and silver sites facilitate the O₂ adsorption, and these two factors separately dominate in various cluster species. The revealed effects of a doping silver atom in small gold clusters are helpful to understand the role of the residual silver components in many nano gold catalysts.

Greatly Enhanced Electron Affinities of Au2n Cl Clusters (n = 1-4): Effects of Chlorine Doping

Au2n Cl- (n = 1-4) clusters are investigated by both laser ablation mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations. It is interesting to find that the electron affinities of neutral Au2n Cl (n = 1-4) clusters are much larger than those of corresponding pure Au2n clusters. Among them, the electron affinity of Au2Cl is 4.02 eV, which can be defined as a very unique superhalogen that is quite different from classical ones of M n X m (M = metal, X = halogen, and n < m). Natural bond orbital and highest occupied molecular orbital analyses indicate that the extra electron is predominantly delocalized over the positively charged metal moiety in these anionic Au2n Cl- clusters, which is the main reason for the large electron affinities of the corresponding neutral species.

Hydration of the methanesulfonate–ammonia/amine complex and its atmospheric implications

Methanesulfonate (MSA⁻), found in substantial concentrations in the atmosphere, is expected to enhance aerosol nucleation and the growth of nanoparticles, but the details of methanesulfonate clusters are poorly understood. In this study, MSA⁻ was chosen along with ammonia (NH₃) or three common amines and water (H₂O) to discuss the roles of ternary homogeneous nucleation and ion-induced nucleation in aerosol formation. We studied the structural characteristics and thermodynamics of the clusters using density functional theory at the PW91PW91/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level. The analysis of noncovalent interactions predicts that the amines can form more stable clusters with MSA⁻ than NH₃, in agreement with the results from structures and thermodynamics; however, the enhancement in stability for amines is not large enough to overcome the difference in the concentrations of NH₃ and amines under typical atmospheric conditions. In addition, the favorable free energies of formation for the (MSA⁻)(NH₃/amines)(H₂O)_n (n = 0–3) clusters at 298.15 K show that MSA⁻ could contribute to the aerosol nucleation process with binding NH₃/amines and H₂O up to n = 3. There are strong temperature and humidity dependences for the formation of complexes; higher humidity and temperature promote the formation of larger hydrates. Finally, for the (MSA⁻)(NH₃/amines)(H₂O)_n clusters, the evaporation rates were determined to further investigate the atmospheric implications.

Aun (n = 1,11) Clusters Interacting With Lone-Pair Ligands

We analyze the pattern of binding energies (BEs) of small Aun clusters (n = 1-7, 11) with lone-pair ligands (L = H2O, SH2, NH3, PH3, PF3, PCl3, and PMe3) employing the density functional theory. We use PBE0 functional with the dispersion correction and scalar relativistic effective core potential. This approach provides correct BEs when compared with benchmark CCSD(T) calculations for Au-L and Au2-L complexes. The pattern of BEs of Aun-L complexes is irregular with BE for Au3 ≈ Au4 > Au2 > Au7 > Au5 > Au11 > Au6 > Au1. Electron affinities (EAs) of Aun clusters exhibit oscillatory pattern with the cluster size. Binding energies of Aun-L complexes are oscillatory as well following EAs of Aun clusters. BEs of odd and even Aun-L complexes were analyzed separately. The bonding mechanism in odd Aun-L complexes is dominated by the lone pair → metal electron donation to the singly occupied valence Aun orbital accompanied by the back-donation. Even Aun clusters create covalent Aun-L bonds with BEs higher than those in odd Aun-L complexes. The BEs pattern and optimized geometries of Aun-L complexes correspond to the picture of creating the gold-ligand bond through the lone pair of a ligand interacting with the singly occupied molecular orbital in odd clusters or lowest unoccupied molecular orbital in even clusters of Aun. Ligands in both odd and even Aun-L complexes form three groups with binding energies that correlate with their ionization energies. The lowest BE is calculated for H2O as a ligand, followed by SH2 and NH3. PX3 ligands exhibit highest BEs.

Three-Dimensional Assignment of the Structures of Atomic Clusters: an Example of Au8M (M=Si, Ge, Sn) Anion Clusters

Identification of different isomer structures of atomic and molecular clusters has long been a challenging task in the field of cluster science. Here we present a three-dimensional (3D) assignment method, combining the energy (1D) and simulated (2D) spectra to assure the assignment of the global minimum structure. This method is more accurate and convenient than traditional methods, which only consider the total energy and first vertical detachment energies (VDEs) of anion clusters. There are two prerequisites when the 3D assignment method is ultilized. First, a reliable global minimum search algorithm is necessary to explore enough valleys on the potential energy surface. Second, trustworthy simulated spectra are necessary, that is to say, spectra that are in quantitative agreement. In this paper, we demonstrate the validity of the 3D assignment method using Au₈M⁻ (M = Si, Ge, Sn) systems. Results from this study indicate that the global minimum structures of Au₈Ge⁻ and Au₈Sn⁻ clusters are different from those described in previous studies.

Interaction of gas phase oxalic acid with ammonia and its atmospheric implications

The temperature effects could contribute to the variation of the relative populations of the isomers, thus the temperature dependence of the thermodynamic properties is an important parameter to understand the roles of the specific nucleation mechanisms at various atmospheric temperatures.

Density functional study on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of 3d transition-metal-doped Au5 clusters

Density functional calculations have been performed for the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of Au5M (M = Sc-Zn) clusters. Geometry optimizations indicate that the M atoms in low-energy Au5M isomers prefer to occupy the most highly coordinated position. The ground-state clusters except Au5Sc possess a planar structure. The vibrational spectra of the doped clusters are completely different from that of a pure gold cluster. The relative stability and chemical activity are investigated through the averaged binding energy and energy gap for the most stable Au5M clusters. It is found that the impurity atoms (not including the Zn atom) can enhance the thermal stability of the host cluster. The chemical activity of Au5M clusters is higher than that of the Au6 cluster. The calculated energy gaps are in accord with available approximate experimental data. The vertical ionization potential, the electron affinity, and photoelectron spectrum are computed and simulated theoretically for all of the ground-state clusters. The magnetism analyses show that the magnetic moment of these Au5M clusters varies from 0 to 5 μB by substituting a Au atom in a Au6 cluster with various M atoms and is mainly localized on the M atom for M = Ti-Ni.

Probing the 2D-to-3D structural transition in gold clusters with a single sulfur atom: AuxS0,±1 (x = 1–10)
