Applied Electric Field Effects on Diffusivity and Electrical Double-Layer Thickness

This study utilizes molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and continuum frameworks to explore electroosmotic flow (EOF) in nanoconfined aqueous electrolytes, offering a promising alternative to conventional micro-/nanofluidic systems. Although osmotic behavior in these environments is deeply linked to local fluid properties and interfacial dynamics between the fluid and electrolyte solutions, achieving a complete molecular-level understanding has remained challenging. The findings establish a linear relationship between electric field strength and fluid velocity, uncovering two distinct transport regimes separated by a critical threshold, with a markedly intensified flow in the second regime. It is demonstrated that rising electric field strengths significantly enhance water diffusion coefficients, supported by a detailed analysis of fluid hydration structures, the potential of mean force (PMF), and local stress tensors. Due to the applied electric field strength, the motion of ions and water accelerates, leading to the redistribution of ions and intensification of electrostatic forces. This expands the thickness of the electric double layer (EDL) and amplifies fluid diffusivity, thereby enhancing nanoscale fluid activity. These insights enhance the molecular-level understanding of EOF and define the stability of flow regimes, providing valuable guidelines for advancing nanofluidic technologies, such as drug delivery systems and lab-on-a-chip devices.

Simulation Study of Electric Double-Layer Capacitance of Ordered Carbon Electrodes

Supercapacitors are electrochemical energy storage devices having high capacitance, high power density, long cycle life, low cost, easy maintenance, and negligible environmental pollution. The formation of an electric double layer at the electrode-electrolyte interface is mostly responsible for supercapacitors' energy storage. The simulation study of equilibrium electric double-layer capacitance (EDLC) in 3D arranged mesoporous carbon electrodes with a simple cubic morphology and interdigitated electrodes has been done. Continuum theory has been utilized to study the underlying processes involved in EDLC. Interfacial polarization and ion crowding depend on the electrode's critical thickness. Porosity increases the capacitance due to the increase in the electrode surface area. The diffuse-layer specific capacitance of ordered mesoporous carbon electrodes in a (C₂H₅)₄NBF₄/propylene carbonate organic electrolyte is in the range of 3.2-13.3 μF cm^-2, varying according to the electrode thickness. The Stern-layer specific capacitance is 167.6 μF cm^-2, and total equilibrium EDLC is in the range of 3.1-12.3 μF cm^-2. The effect of the electric field at the electrode-electrolyte interface on reducing electrolyte permittivity has also been discussed. The EDLC of carbonized interdigitated electrodes is analyzed in a 6 M KOH electrolyte. The diffuse-layer specific capacitance ranges from 118.7 to 352.0 μF cm^-2 depending on the width of the interdigitated electrodes. The Stern-layer specific capacitance is 91.2 μF cm^-2, and the total EDLC value is 51.6-72.4 μF cm^-2. The modeling and simulation approach can be applied to different mesoporous electrodes by varying the supercapacitor component's parameters and geometry.

Unraveling the Molecular Interface and Boundary Problems in an Electrical Double Layer and Electroosmotic Flow

In a nanofluidic system, the electroosmotic flow (EOF) is a complex fluid transport mechanism, where the formation of an electrical double layer (EDL) occurs ubiquitously at the dissimilar atomic interface. Several studies have suggested various interface boundaries to calculate the EDL thickness. However, the physical origin of the interface boundary and its effects on the flow properties is not yet clearly understood. Combining the theoretical framework and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we show the effects of different interfacial boundaries on the EDL thickness and EOF characteristics. Implemented interface boundaries exhibit the EDL thickness-boundary relation, i.e., the EDL thickness from MD simulations shows the tendency of converging toward the continuum approximation. Furthermore, inserting these values of EDL thicknesses into the continuum equation shows the convergence of flow transition of the molecular state to a neutral from an electrical violation phase, which takes a parabolic to plug-like shape in the velocity profile. Different interface boundaries also affect the hydrodynamic properties (viscosity and electroviscosity) of EOF, which varies from the bulk to interface region, as well as the fluid flow. Therefore, we can infer that, at the molecular level, the dissimilar atomic boundary and hydrodynamic properties dominate the electrokinetic flow. Our simulation results and theoretical model provide fundamental insightful information and guidelines for the EOF study based on the atomic interface and dynamic structure-based hydrodynamic property.

Molecular Simulation of Electrode-Solution Interfaces

Many key industrial processes, from electricity production, conversion, and storage to electrocatalysis or electrochemistry in general, rely on physical mechanisms occurring at the interface between a metallic electrode and an electrolyte solution, summarized by the concept of an electric double layer, with the accumulation/depletion of electrons on the metal side and of ions on the liquid side. While electrostatic interactions play an essential role in the structure, thermodynamics, dynamics, and reactivity of electrode-electrolyte interfaces, these properties also crucially depend on the nature of the ions and solvent, as well as that of the metal itself. Such interfaces pose many challenges for modeling because they are a place where quantum chemistry meets statistical physics. In the present review, we explore the recent advances in the description and understanding of electrode-electrolyte interfaces with classical molecular simulations, with a focus on planar interfaces and solvent-based liquids, from pure solvent to water-in-salt electrolytes.

Structural and thermodynamic properties of the electrical double layer in slit nanopores: A Monte Carlo study

Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation techniques at a constant electrode-electrolyte potential drop are employed to study the differential capacitance of a planar electric double layer in slit nanopores. According to the technique, a single randomly selected ion is exchanged between a simulation box and a reservoir. The probability of this step is given by the GCMC algorithm. To preserve the electroneutrality of the system after the ion exchange, the electrode charge is adequately modified, which produces electrode charge fluctuations. The charge fluctuations are used to calculate the differential capacitance of the double layer. Results for the ion distributions, electrode surface charge density, and differential capacitance in slit nanopores are reported for a symmetric system of +1:-1 ionic valences with a common ionic diameter of 0.4 nm at electrolyte concentrations of 0.2M, 1.0M, and 2.5M, pore widths of 0.6 nm, 0.8 nm, and 1.2 nm, a potential drop of 0.05 V, a relative permittivity of 78.5, and a temperature of 298.15 K. These results are compared with the corresponding data for a +1:-2 valence asymmetric system and a size asymmetric system with ionic diameters of 0.4 nm and 0.3 nm. The results show that with increasing electrolyte concentration, the range of confinement effects decreases. For divalent anions, the width dependence of electrode charge and differential capacitance reveals a maximum. The differential capacitance curves show a camel shape to bell shape transition as the electrolyte concentration increases. Asymmetry in both ionic valences and diameters leads to asymmetric capacitance curves.
