C60 chain phases on ZnPc/Ag(111) surfaces: Supramolecular organization driven by competing interactions

From high quality packing to disordered nucleation or phase separation in donor/acceptor interfaces: ClAlPc-C60 on Au(111)

The dramatic consequences that the orientation adopted by the molecular dipoles, in diverse arrays of chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (ClAlPc) on Au(111), have on the ulterior adsorption and growth of C60 are explored by means of an all scanning probe microscopy approach. The unidirectional downwards organization of the molecular dipoles at the first layer reduces charge transfer from the metal to C60. Imbalance between attractive and repulsive interactions of the fullerenes are crucial for their ordered supramolecular aggregation. The effect at the basis of such self-assembling seems to be released by the all upwards dipole orientation adopted on the ClAlPc second layer. The low electronic corrugation of the bilayer results in a higher mobility of the fullerenes which for similar coverages diffuse large distances to reach uncovered first layer regions. Density functional theory calculations corroborate the experimental observations indicating the relevance of charge transfer, potential energy surface corrugation, C60 on-surface diffusion barriers and screening. The structure of the co-adsorbed C60 and ClAlPc layers strongly depends on the deposition sequence. Phase-separation, where each molecule adopts the single-component assembly, occurs if C60 is deposited first. The present results contribute to understanding the influence of the dipolar nature of molecular layers on the electronic and structure of donor/acceptor heterojunctions, which is crucial for device design via engineering the energy level alignment at organic-organic and organic-metal interfaces.

Multiscale modeling of structure formation of C60 on insulating CaF2 substrates

Morphologies of adsorbed molecular films are of interest in a wide range of applications. To study the epitaxial growth of these systems in computer simulations requires access to long time and length scales, and one typically resorts to kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations. However, KMC simulations require as input transition rates and their dependence on external parameters (such as temperature). Experimental data allow only limited and indirect access to these rates, and models are often oversimplified. Here, we follow a bottom-up approach and aim at systematically constructing all relevant rates for an example system that has shown interesting properties in experiments, buckminsterfullerene on a calcium fluoride substrate. We develop classical force fields (both atomistic and coarse-grained) and perform molecular dynamics simulations of the elementary transitions in order to derive explicit expressions for the transition rates with a minimal number of free parameters.

Resolving Site-Specific Energy Levels of Small-Molecule Donor-Acceptor Heterostructures Close to Metal Contacts

The active material of optoelectronic devices must accommodate for contacts which serve to collect or inject the charge carriers. It is the purpose of this work to find out to which extent properties of organic optoelectronic layers change close to metal contacts compared to known properties of bulk materials. Bottom-up fabrication capabilities of model interfaces under ultrahigh vacuum and single-atom low temperature (LT)-STM spectroscopy with density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to detect the spatial modifications of electronic states such as frontier-orbitals at interfaces. The system under consideration is made of a silver substrate covered with a blend of C₆₀ and ZnPc molecules of a few monolayers. When C₆₀ and ZnPc are separately adsorbed on Ag(111), they show distinct spectroscopic features in STM. However, when C₆₀ is added to the ZnPc monolayer, it shows scanning tunneling spectra similar to ZnPc, revealing a strong interaction of C₆₀ with the ZnPc induced by the substrate. DFT calculations on a model complex confirm the strong hybridization of C₆₀ with ZnPc layer upon adsorption on Ag(111), thus highlighting the role of boundary layers where the donor-acceptor character is strongly perturbed. The calculation also reveals a significant charge transfer from the Ag to the complex that is likely responsible for a downward shift of the molecular LUMO in agreement with the experiment.
