Single atom catalysts on amorphous supports: A quenched disorder perspective

Site-Averaged Ab Initio Kinetics: Importance Learning for Multistep Reactions on Amorphous Supports

Single-atom centers on amorphous supports include catalysts for polymerization, partial oxidation, metathesis, hydrogenolysis, and more. The disordered environment makes each site different, and the kinetics exponentially magnifies these differences to make ab initio site-averaged kinetics calculations extremely difficult. This work extends the importance learning algorithm for efficient and precise site-averaged kinetics estimates to ab initio calculations and multistep reaction mechanisms. Specifically, we calculate site-averaged proton transfer relaxation rates on an ensemble of cluster models representing Brønsted acid sites on silica-alumina. We include direct and water-assisted proton transfer pathways and simultaneously estimate the water adsorption and activation enthalpies for forward and backward proton transfers. We use density functional theory (DFT) to obtain a site-averaged rate, somewhat like a turnover frequency, for the proton transfer relaxation rate. Finally, we show that importance learning can provide orders-of-magnitude acceleration over standard sampling methods for site-averaged rate calculations in cases where the rate is dominated by a few highly active sites.

Challenges and Opportunities in Engineering the Electronic Structure of Single-Atom Catalysts

Controlling the electronic structure of transition-metal single-atom heterogeneous catalysts (SACs) is crucial to unlocking their full potential. The ability to do this with increasing precision offers a rational strategy to optimize processes associated with the adsorption and activation of reactive intermediates, charge transfer dynamics, and light absorption. While several methods have been proposed to alter the electronic characteristics of SACs, such as the oxidation state, band structure, orbital occupancy, and associated spin, the lack of a systematic approach to their application makes it difficult to control their effects. In this Perspective, we examine how the electronic configuration of SACs can be engineered for thermochemical, electrochemical, and photochemical applications, exploring the relationship with their activity, selectivity, and stability. We discuss synthetic and analytical challenges in controlling and discriminating the electronic structure of SACs and possible directions toward closing the gap between computational and experimental efforts. By bringing this topic to the center, we hope to stimulate research to understand, control, and exploit electronic effects in SACs and ultimately spur technological developments.

Influence of the Synthesis Protocol on the Catalytic Performance of PHI-Type Zeolites for the Dehydration of Lactic Acid

Acrylic acid is an important basic chemical and a key starting compound for a variety of consumer products. Today, acrylic acid is still produced from fossil-based propene. If acrylic acid were produced from bio-based lactic acid, this would be an important step towards sustainability. The gas-phase dehydration reaction of lactic acid to acrylic acid was performed over eight-membered ring PHI-type zeolites in the Na+ and K+-form. A few variations in the synthesis procedure of PHI-type zeolite made a big difference in the performance during the catalytic reaction due to differences in the physical and chemical properties, especially the accessibility of the pores. The catalysts were characterized with ICP-OES, XRD, CO2 physisorption, SEM and 27Al MAS NMR. The calcination resulted in a partial collapse of the PHI structure. In the case of Na,K-PHI with a low surface area, the catalysis tends to take place on the outer surface, while in the case of Na,K-PHI with a high surface area the catalysis can also take place within the pore system. This has a considerable influence on the selectivity of the catalysts.

Synergistic Effects in the Activity of Nano-Transition-Metal Clusters Pt12M (M = Ir, Ru or Rh) for NO Dissociation

The dissociation of environmentally hazardous NO through dissociative adsorption on metallic clusters supported by oxides, is receiving growing attention. Building on previous research on monometallic M 13  clusters [J. Phys. Chem. C, 2019, 123(33), 20314-20318], this work considers bimetallic Pt 12 M (M = Rh, Ru or Ir) clusters. The adsorption energy and activation energy of NO dissociation on the clusters have been calculated in vacuum using Koh,-Sham DFT, while their trends were rationalized using reactivity indices such as molecular electrostatic potential and global Fermi softness. The results shown that doping of the Pt clusters lowered the adsorption energy as well as the activation energy for NO dissociation. Furthermore, reactivity indices were calculated as a first estimate of the performance of the clusters in realistic amorphous silica pores (MCM-41) through  ab initio  molecular dynamics simulations.

Modulating the Local Coordination Environment of Single-Atom Catalysts for Enhanced Catalytic Performance in Hydrogen/Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) hold the promise of utilizing 100% of the participating atoms in a reaction as active catalytic sites, achieving a remarkable boost in catalytic efficiency. Thus, they present great potential for noble metal-based electrochemical application systems, such as water electrolyzers and fuel cells. However, their practical applications are severely hindered by intrinsic complications, namely atom agglomeration and relocation, originating from the uncontrollably high surface energy of isolated single-atoms (SAs) during postsynthetic treatment processes or catalytic reactions. Extensive efforts have been made to develop new methodologies for strengthening the interactions between SAs and supports, which could ensure the desired stability of the active catalytic sites and their full utilization by SACs. This review covers the recent progress in SACs development while emphasizing the association between the regulation of coordination environments (e.g., coordination atoms, numbers, sites, structures) and the electrocatalytic performance of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The crucial role of coordination chemistry in modifying the intrinsic properties of SACs and manipulating their metal-loading, stability, and catalytic properties is elucidated. Finally, the future challenges of SACS development and the industrial outlook of this field are discussed.

Synthesis and Structure-Activity Characterization of a Single-Site MoO2 Catalytic Center Anchored on Reduced Graphene Oxide

Molecularly derived single-site heterogeneous catalysts can bridge the understanding and performance gaps between conventional homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, guiding the rational design of next-generation catalysts. While impressive advances have been made with well-defined oxide supports, the structural complexity of other supports and the nature of the grafted surface species present an intriguing challenge. In this study, single-site Mo(═O)₂ species grafted onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO/MoO₂) are characterized by XPS, DRIFTS, powder XRD, N₂ physisorption, NH₃-TPD, aqueous contact angle, active site poisoning assay, Mo EXAFS, model compound single-crystal XRD, DFT, and catalytic performance. NH₃-TPD reveals that the anchored MoO₂ moiety is not strongly acidic, while Mo 3d_5/2 XPS assigns the oxidation state as Mo(VI), and XRD shows little rGO periodicity change on MoO₂ grafting. Contact angle analysis shows that MoO₂ grafting consumes rGO surface polar groups, yielding a more hydrophobic surface. The rGO/MoO₂ DRIFTS assigns features at 959 and 927 cm^-1 to the symmetric and antisymmetric Mo═O stretching modes, respectively, of an isolated cis-(O═Mo═O) moiety, in agreement with DFT computation. Moreover, the Mo EXAFS rGO/MoO₂ structural data are consistent with isolated (C-O)₂-Mo(═O)₂ species having two Mo═O bonds and two Mo-O bonds at distances of 1.69(3) and 1.90(3) Å, respectively. rGO/MoO₂ is also more active than the previously reported AC/MoO₂ catalyst, with reductive carbonyl coupling TOFs approaching 1.81 × 10³ h^-1. rGO/MoO₂ is environmentally robust and multiply recyclable with 69 ± 2% of the Mo sites catalytically significant. Overall, rGO/MoO₂ is a structurally well-defined and versatile single-site Mo(VI) dioxo heterogeneous catalytic system.

Unraveling the Function of Metal-Amorphous Support Interactions in Single-Atom Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Amorphization of support in single-atoms catalysts is a less researched concept for promoting catalytic kinetics through modulating the metal-support interaction (MSI). We modeled single-atom ruthenium (Ru SAs ) supported on amorphous cobalt/nickel (oxy)hydroxide (Ru-a-CoNi) to explore the favorable MSI between Ru SAs and amorphous skeleton for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Differing from the usual crystal counterpart (Ru-c-CoNi), the electrons on Ru SAs are facilitated to exchange among local configurations (Ru-O-Co/Ni) of Ru-a-CoNi since flexibly amorphous configuration induces the possible d-d electrons transfer and medium-to-long range p-π orbitals coupling, further intensifying the MSI. It enables Ru-a-CoNi with enhanced water dissociation, alleviated oxophilicity, and rapid hydrogen migration, which results in superior durability and HER activity of Ru-a-CoNi, wherein only 15 mV can deliver 10 mA cm - 2 , significantly lower than 58 mV of Ru-c-CoNi.

Importance learning estimator for the site-averaged turnover frequency of a disordered solid catalyst

For disordered catalysts such as atomically dispersed "single-atom" metals on amorphous silica, the active sites inherit different properties from their quenched-disordered local environments. The observed kinetics are site-averages, typically dominated by a small fraction of highly active sites. Standard sampling methods require expensive ab initio calculations at an intractable number of sites to converge on the site-averaged kinetics. We present a new method that efficiently estimates the site-averaged turnover frequency (TOF). The new estimator uses the same importance learning algorithm [Vandervelden et al., React. Chem. Eng. 5, 77 (2020)] that we previously used to compute the site-averaged activation energy. We demonstrate the method by computing the site-averaged TOF for a simple disordered lattice model of an amorphous catalyst. The results show that with the importance learning algorithm, the site-averaged TOF and activation energy can now be obtained concurrently with orders of magnitude reduction in required ab initio calculations.

Atomically Dispersed Pt-group Catalysts: Reactivity, Uniformity, Structural Evolution, and Paths to Increased Functionality

The development of experimental and computational tools that give accurate and visual active site descriptions has renewed research interest in atomically dispersed metal catalysts. In this perspective, we describe our approach to synthesizing and understanding atomically dispersed Pt-group metals on oxide supports. Using site-specific characterization, we show that these metal species have distinct reactivity from metal clusters. We argue that producing materials where all metal sites have identical local coordination is key to both accurately assessing catalytic properties and achieving single-site behavior. Methods for assessing site uniformity are considered. We show that producing uniform metal species allows us to describe their structure at the atomic scale and understand how this structure evolves under different conditions. Finally, we suggest pathways to increased functionality for atomically dispersed catalysts, through control of their local coordination and steric environment and through cooperativity with different sites.

Si-thiol supported atomic-scale palladium as efficient and recyclable catalyst for Suzuki coupling reaction

Atomic-scale catalysts leverage the advantages of both heterogeneous catalysts for their stability and reusability and homogeneous catalysts for their isolated active sites. Here, a palladium catalyst supported by Si-thiol, a commercially available mercaptopropyl-modified and TMS-passivated amorphous silica, was synthesized and characterized by SEM,TEM, aberration-corrected STEM-HAADF, XRD, FT-IR and XPS. Statistical analysis revealed that the catalytic Pd species predominantly consisted of intermediate sized nanoparticles (<2 nm), small amounts of essentially isolated atoms (ca. 0.1 nm), and limited amounts of somewhat larger nanoparticles (<5 nm). The nanoscale atomic clusters dominated the reactivity and served as the key active sites for Suzuki coupling. The outcomes of the reaction were greatly affected by the choice of solvents, and Pd/Si-thiol was demonstrated to be reusable for more than three times without a noticeable loss of catalytic activity. Selective Sequestration of Aromatics from Aqueous Mixtures with Sugars by Hydrophobic Molecular Calixarene Cavities Grafted on Silica

The separation of aromatic contaminants from sugar-aromatic aqueous mixtures is required in second-generation biorefineries because aromatic compounds deactivate (bio)catalysts typically involved in upgrading lignocellulosic biomass to fuels and chemicals. This separation remains challenging, however, because of the degree of molecular recognition needed to sequester dilute aromatic impurities from concentrated sugar streams. Herein, we demonstrate that hydrophobic cavities of p- tert-butylcalix[4]arene macrocycles grafted on amorphous silica (calix/SiO₂) perform this separation selectively and efficiently by acting as selective molecular hosts that adsorb aromatic compounds (5-hydroxymethylfurfural, vanillin, and vanillic acid) while excluding monomeric sugar (glucose chosen as a prototypical model) in aqueous mixtures. By comparing calix/SiO₂ to a range of organically modified SiO₂ surfaces and other porous adsorbents, we demonstrate that the organization of hydrophobic functional groups within discrete nests consisting of calixarene cavities is crucial for facilitating the adsorption of aromatics. Density functional theory calculations of the host-guest complex indicate that adsorption is brought about by weak dispersive (van der Waals) interactions between tert-butyl upper-rim substituents in calixarene hosts and aromatic guests. Calix/SiO₂ can be repeatedly reused, demonstrating its viability as an adsorbent within a continuous biorefining process. These calix/SiO₂ adsorbents expand the palette of materials available for selective sugar-aromatic separations, which until now have been limited to pyrene-based sites of metal-organic framework NU-1000, and demonstrate that sites consisting of relatively simple hydrophobic tert-butyl substituents organized around a hemispherical molecular cavity provide a sufficient degree of molecular recognition for performing this separation selectively.

Molecular Modelling for Reactor Design

Chemical reactor modelling based on insights and data on a molecular level has become reality over the last few years. Multiscale models describing elementary reaction steps and full microkinetic schemes, pore structures, multicomponent adsorption and diffusion inside pores, and entire reactors have been presented. Quantum mechanical (QM) approaches, molecular simulations (Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics), and continuum equations have been employed for this purpose. Some recent developments in these approaches are presented, in particular time-dependent QM methods, calculation of van der Waals forces, new approaches for force field generation, automatic setup of reaction schemes, and pore modelling. Multiscale simulations are discussed. Applications of these approaches to heterogeneous catalysis are demonstrated for examples that have found growing interest over the last few years, such as metal-support interactions, influence of pore geometry on reactions, noncovalent bonding, reaction dynamics, dynamic changes in catalyst nanoparticle structure, electrocatalysis, solvent effects in catalysis, and multiscale modelling.

Summarizing comments on the discussion and a prospectus for urgent future action

Following my personal reactions to some of the key points made in this Discussion (Part I), I present, in Part II, what I perceive to be the most important, and, in some cases, urgent actions that now need to be taken in the following inter-related fields: (i) design of catalysts, especially for the production of materials using anthropogenic carbon dioxide, CO2, as feedstock; (ii) the continuing role of catalysis in the protection of the environment; (iii) the importance of catalysis in the generation of fuel and the release of energy; and (iv) the wisdom of conducting life cycle and techno-economic analyses continually during the development of new catalysts, as well as of those in regular use. A brief account is also given of the prospect of designing atom-efficient catalysts in which either atomically dispersed rare (and expensive) metals such as Ir or Pt or the use of single-site earth-abundant elements (Al, Si, O) can be employed to facilitate important industrial reactions.
