Structural transformation between long and short-chain form of liquid sulfur from ab initio molecular dynamics

Generic maximum-valence model for fluid polyamorphism

Recently, a maximal-valence model has been proposed to model a liquid-liquid phase transition induced by polymerization in sulfur. In this paper we present a simple generic model to describe liquid polyamorphism in single-component fluids using a maximum-valence approach for any arbitrary coordination number. The model contains three types of interactions: (i) atoms attract each other by van der Waals forces that generate a liquid-gas transition at low pressures, (ii) atoms may form covalent bonds that induce association, and (iii) additional repulsive forces between atoms with maximal valence and atoms with any valence. This additional repulsion generates liquid-liquid phase separation and the region of the negative heat expansion coefficient (density anomaly) on a P-T phase diagram. We show the existence of liquid-liquid phase transitions for dimerization, polymerization, gelation, and network formation for corresponding coordination numbers z=1,2,...,6 and discuss the limits of this generic model for producing fluid polyamorphism.

Crucial Role of S8-Rings in Structural, Relaxation, Vibrational and Electronic Properties of LiquidSulfur close to the λ Transition

Liquid sulfur has been studied by density-functional based molecular-dynamics simulations at different temperatures ranging from 400 K up to 700 K across the well-documented λ-transition. Structure models containing either a majority of Sn chains or S8 rings are considered and compared to experimental data from X-ray scattering. The comparison suggests a liquid structure of a majority of 2-fold sulfur at low temperature, dominated by S8 rings that open progressively upon temperature increase. Typical features associated with such rings are analyzed and indicate that they contribute to a specific third correlating distance in the pair correlation function and to a contribution at low wavevector k in reciprocal space. The vibrational properties of liquid sulfur are also considered and indicate a contribution at 60 meV that is associated with both chains and rings, albeit the latter lead to a more intense peak at this wavenumber. The underlying network structure also impacts the dynamic properties of the melts which display enhanced dynamic heterogeneities when S8 rings are present. The analysis of the electronic Kohn-Sham energies shows insulating character with a gap of about ≃2.0 eV, albeit the presence of localized mid-gap states is acknowledged that can be associated, in part, with the presence of S6rings.

Collective dynamics of liquid sulfur scrutinized over three decades in frequency

Liquid sulfur consists mainly of eight-membered rings and hence can be regarded as a model of a molecular liquid. A liquid, which is built from different molecular structures, will demonstrate a wide range in relaxation processes and excitation modes. Three inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed to study the collective dynamics of liquid sulfur over three decades in frequencies. A wide range of wave vectors was studied to reveal the response of density fluctuations over different lengthscales. A viscoelastic model with a two-times memory function was applied to the data. The analysis revealed a slow relaxation mode, an acoustic-type excitation, and a high-frequency mode, which resembles an optic-type excitation. The wave-vector dependence of the slow relaxation mode width exhibits the signs of a de Gennes narrowing around the wave vector where the structure factor has a shoulder. This slow relaxation process could be related to diffusive particle movements. The acoustic-type modes evidence a viscoelastic reaction with a 50% enhancement of the sound velocity. This enhancement of the sound velocity and the spectral line shape is qualitatively similar to spectra of molecular liquids. The two relaxation times of the memory function are separated by about two orders of magnitude and underpin the need for a wide frequency range investigation of this complex liquid. The high-frequency response can be interpreted as optic-type modes in the liquid.

Modeling fluid polyamorphism through a maximum-valence approach

We suggest a simple model to describe polyamorphism in single-component fluids using a maximum-valence approach. The model contains three types of interactions: (i) Atoms attract each other by van der Waals forces that generate a liquid-gas transition at low pressures, (ii) atoms may form covalent bonds that induce association, and (iii) atoms with maximal valence attract or repel each other stronger than other atoms, thus generating liquid-liquid separation. As an example, we qualitatively compare this model with the behavior of liquid sulfur and show that condition (iii) generates a liquid-liquid phase transition in addition to the liquid-gas phase transition.

Liquid structure under extreme conditions: high-pressure x-ray diffraction studies

Under extreme conditions of high pressure and temperature, liquids can undergo substantial structural transformations as their atoms rearrange to minimise energy within a more confined volume. Understanding the structural response of liquids under extreme conditions is important across a variety of disciplines, from fundamental physics and exotic chemistry to materials and planetary science.In situexperiments and atomistic simulations can provide crucial insight into the nature of liquid-liquid phase transitions and the complex phase diagrams and melting relations of high-pressure materials. Structural changes in natural magmas at the high-pressures experienced in deep planetary interiors can have a profound impact on their physical properties, knowledge of which is important to inform geochemical models of magmatic processes. Generating the extreme conditions required to melt samples at high-pressure, whilst simultaneously measuring their liquid structure, is a considerable challenge. The measurement, analysis, and interpretation of structural data is further complicated by the inherent disordered nature of liquids at the atomic-scale. However, recent advances in high-pressure technology mean that liquid diffraction measurements are becoming more routinely feasible at synchrotron facilities around the world. This topical review examines methods for high pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction of liquids and the wide variety of systems which have been studied by them, from simple liquid metals and their remarkable complex behaviour at high-pressure, to molecular-polymeric liquid-liquid transitions in pnicogen and chalcogen liquids, and density-driven structural transformations in water and silicate melts.

Elemental sulphur in the synthesis of sulphur-containing polymers: reaction mechanisms and green prospects

The synthesis of polymers using elemental sulphur as a chemical agent has been studied in relation to the worldwide overproduction of cyclo-octasulphur. Herein, the mechanisms of the processes leading to the inclusion of elemental sulphur into macromolecules have been reviewed and the main methods for reduction of the reaction temperature required for the S8 ring opening have been shown. Approaches to the activation of cyclo-octasulphur in the synthesis and macromolecule cross-linking reactions were discussed in the context of finding the chemical agents and conditions that satisfy the principles of green chemistry.

Structural change in liquid sulphur from chain polymeric liquid to atomic simple liquid under high pressure

The structural properties of liquid sulphur under high pressure up to approximately 500 GPa have been investigated by means of ab initio molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations. The obtained pair distribution functions and spatial distribution of electron density under high pressure indicate the existence of a covalent-like interaction even in the metallic state and the covalent-like interaction gradually decreases with increasing pressure. By analyzing the static structure factor, it is found that the covalent-like interaction still remains at approximately 200 GPa, and liquid sulphur has a simple liquid structure at 320 GPa and higher pressures. These results indicate that the covalent-like interaction disappears at a pressure between 200 and 320 GPa. In this study, we also estimate the pressure range of structural change in other liquid chalcogens in a similar manner as liquid S. The pressures at which liquid Se and Te have simple liquid structure are estimated to be larger than approximately 100 and 20 GPa, respectively.
