Simulation of circularly polarized luminescence spectra using coupled cluster theory

Amplified Circularly Polarized Electroluminescence Behavior Triggered by Helical Nanofibers from Chiral Co-assembly Polymers

Two chiral binaphthyl polymers (R/S-P1 and R/S-P2) with different dihedral angles of the binaphthyl moiety were chosen as chiral inducers to construct chiral co-assemblies with an achiral pyrene-naphthalimide dye (NPy) and then acted as the emitting layer (EML) of circularly polarized electroluminescence (CP-EL) devices. The anchored dihedral angle of R/S-P2 not only exhibited the enhanced chirality signal, but also had a strong chirality-inducing effect on the achiral NPy dye in the chiral co-assembly (R/S-P2)_0.6 -(NPy)_0.4 . After annealing at 120 °C, the CPL signal (|g_em |) of ordered helical nano-fibers (R/S-P2)_0.6 -(NPy)_0.4 was amplified to 5.6×10^-2 , which was about 6-fold larger than that of (R/S-P1)_0.6 -(NPy)_0.4 . The amplified g_em value of (R/S-P2)_0.6 -(NPy)_0.4 was due to the formation of a helical co-assembly through the strong π-π stacking interaction between the R/S-P2 and the achiral NPy. This kind of ordered helical nano-fibers (R/S-P2)_0.6 -(NPy)_0.4 acted as the EML of CP-OLEDs, and achieved an excellent CP-EL performance (|g_EL |=4.8×10^-2 ).

Bright Luminescence by Combining Chiral [2.2]Paracyclophane with a Boron-Nitrogen-Doped Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon Building Block

Novel BN-doped compounds based on chiral, tetrasubstituted [2.2]paracyclophane and NBN-benzo[f,g]tetracene were synthesized by Sonogashira-Hagihara coupling. Conjugated ethynyl linkers allow electronic communication between the π-electron systems through-bond, whereas through-space interactions are provided by strong π-π overlap between the pairs of NBN-building blocks. Excellent optical and chiroptical properties in racemic and enantiopure conditions were measured, with molar absorption coefficients up to ϵ=2.04×105  M-1  cm-1 , fluorescence quantum yields up to ΦPL =0.70, and intense, mirror-image electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence signals of the magnitude of 10-3 for the absorption and luminescence dissymmetry factors. Computed glum,calcd. values match the experimental ones. Electroanalytical data show both oxidation and reduction of the ethynyl-linked tetra-NBN-substituted paracyclophane, with an overlap of two redox processes for oxidation leading to a diradical dication.

CPL Spectra of Camphor Derivatives in Solution by an Integrated QM/MD Approach

We extend a recently proposed computational strategy for the simulation of absorption spectra of semi-rigid molecular systems in condensed phases to the emission spectra of flexible chromophores. As a case study, we have chosen the CPL spectrum of camphor in methanol solution, which shows a well-defined bisignate shape. The first step of our approach is the quantum mechanical computation of reference spectra including vibrational averaging effects and taking bulk solvent effects into account by means of the polarizable continuum model. In the present case, the large amplitude inversion mode is explicitly treated by a numerical approach, whereas the other small-amplitude vibrational modes are taken into account within the harmonic approximation. Next, the snapshots of classical molecular dynamics computations are clusterized and one representative configuration from each cluster is used to compute a reference spectrum. In the present case, different clusters correspond to the two stable conformers of camphor in the S1 excited electronic state and, for each of them, to different numbers of strong solute-solvent hydrogen bonds. Finally, local fluctuation effects within each cluster are taken into account by means of the perturbed matrix model. The overall procedure leads to good agreement with experiment for absorption and emission spectra together with their chiral counterparts, thus allowing to analyze the role of different effects (stereo-electronic, vibrational, environmental) in tuning the overall experimental spectra.

Ab Initio Study of Circular Dichroism and Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Spin-Allowed and Spin-Forbidden Transitions: From Organic Ketones to Lanthanide Complexes

Complete and restricted active space self-consistent field (CAS-/RAS-SCF) wave function methods are applied for the calculation of circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of a series of molecules comprising four organic ketones, the chiral cobalt(III) complex [Co(en)₃]³⁺, and the europium(III) complex [Eu(DPA)₃]^3-. The ab initio results are in good agreement with the experimental data and previous results obtained with Kohn-Sham density functional theory in the case of the spin-allowed transitions. CD and CPL properties are calculated ab initio for the spin-forbidden transitions of both a transition metal and a lanthanide complex.

Chirality in fluorescence and energy transfer

Optical polarization features associated with the fundamental processes of molecular fluorescence and resonance energy transfer are in general studied with reference to plane polarizations. When any of the species involved is chiral, the associated emission processes may exhibit an element of circular polarization-a degree of optical helicity. Although usually a minor effect, some systems can exhibit a sizeable component of circularly polarized luminescence, whose helicity correlates with the enantiomeric form. In studies of multi-component systems, in which initial excitation of a donor species-followed by energy transfer-leads to emission from an acceptor molecule, the handedness of both donor and acceptor may influence output circularity. In systems with an achiral acceptor, a degree of fluorescence circularity may be influenced by the handedness of a chiral donor, but this should not be construed in terms of 'conveying' chirality. Chiral molecules may also play a passive role by inducing helicity in the fluorescence from achiral neighbours, and further tiers of complexity arise if the initial excitation is itself of circular polarization. In all such processes, symmetry principles play a major role in determining a sensitivity to molecular handedness, and their detailed consideration enables a range of new experimental procedures to be identified. Casting the fundamental theory in terms of formal photon-molecule couplings enables the quantum mechanisms involved in all such phenomena to be clearly resolved. The results provide fresh physical insights, and establish connections across a range of indirectly related chiroptical phenomena including induced circular dichroism.

Recent Theoretical and Experimental Progress in Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Small Organic Molecules

Small organic molecules (SOMs) with fascinating chiroptical properties have received much attention for their potential applications in photoelectric and biological devices. As an important research tool, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) provides information about the chiral structures of these molecules in their excited state, and has been an active area of research. With the development of the commercially available CPL instrumentation, currently, more and more research groups have attempted to enhance the CPL parameters (i.e., quantum yield and dissymmetry factor) of the chiral SOMs from all aspects. This review summarizes the latest five years progresses in research on the experimental techniques and theoretical calculations of CPL emitted from SOMs, as well as forecasting its trend of development.

Circularly polarised fluorescence and phosphorescence calculations on organic molecules using the approximate coupled-cluster model CC2

We report the first calculations of rotational strengths for circularly polarised phosphorescence at the coupled cluster level. The rotational strengths for circular dichroism (CD), circularly polarised fluorescence (CPF) and circularly polarised phosphorescence (CPP) were calculated for β,γ-enones and ketones with conjugated double bonds using the CC2 model. To compute spin-forbidden CPP, spin-orbit coupling with perturbation theory is employed within a response theory framework (SOC-PT-CC2). For closed-shell molecules containing only light elements, a spin-free formalism is used to treat the singlet-triplet transitions. It is verified that the simplification obtained in the spin-free formulation from the Wigner-Eckart theorem for spin-forbidden oscillator strengths is also valid for the rotational strengths. Our implementation utilises the resolution of identity (RI) approximation for two-electron integrals which facilitates applications to larger molecules. In the current study, the rotational strength for spin-forbidden circularly-polarised phosphorescence was calculated for a chiral aromatic system, S-DMBDA, containing 44 atoms.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Axially Chiral BODIPY DYEmers: An Experimental and Computational Study

With our new home-built circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) instrument, we measured fluorescence and CPL spectra of the enantiomeric pairs of two quasi-isomeric BODIPY DYEmers 1 and 2, endowed with axial chirality. The electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and CPL spectra of these atropisomeric dimers are dominated by the exciton coupling between the main π-π* transitions (550-560 nm) of the two BODIPY rings. Compound 1 has strong ECD and CPL spectra (g_lum =4×10^-3 ) well reproduced by TD-DFT and SCS-CC2 (spin-component scaled second-order approximate coupled-cluster) calculations using DFT-optimized ground- and excited-state structures. Compound 2 has weaker ECD and CPL spectra (g_lum =4×10^-4 ), partly due to the mutual cancellation of electric-electric and electric-magnetic exciton couplings, and partly to its conformational freedom. This compound is computationally very challenging. Starting from the optimized excited-state geometries, we predicted the wrong sign for the CPL band of 2 using TD-DFT with the most recommended hybrid and range-separated functionals, whereas SCS-CC2 or a DFT functional with full exact exchange provided the correct sign.

Thioflavin T: Electronic Circular Dichroism and Circularly Polarized Luminescence Induced by Amyloid Fibrils

The circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectrum of thioflavin T (ThT) bound to insulin amyloid fibrils has been measured for the first time. It has been found that the samples exhibiting induced circular dichroism (CD) retain the optical activity in the CPL spectra, with the same sign of the rotatory strength. The fluorescence dissymmetry factor is substantial (of the order of magnitude 10(-2) ). Unlike in the corresponding CD and absorption spectra, there is no shift of the CPL band with respect to the fluorescence band. It has been verified that the measured CPL spectra are free from artifacts from circularly polarized scattering of emitted light by conducting additional measurements in a medium with a refractive index similar to insulin (methylsalicylate). The CD and CPL spectra have been interpreted by means of density functional calculations carried out for ThT in its ground and first excited states in different dielectric environments and for ThT interacting with an aromatic ring. It has been found that the presence of an aromatic ring close to the ThT molecule induces Cotton effects of the same order of magnitude as the stabilization of one enantiomeric conformer. Thus, it is expected that both mechanisms contribute to the induced CD and CPL effect to a similar degree.

The Role of Hydrogen Bonds in the Stabilization of Silver-Mediated Cytosine Tetramers

DNA oligomers can form silver-mediated duplexes, stable in gas phase and solution, with potential for novel biomedical and technological applications. The nucleobase-metal bond primarily drives duplex formation, but hydrogen (H-) bonds may also be important for structure selection and stability. To elucidate the role of H-bonding, we conducted theoretical and experimental studies of a duplex formed by silver-mediated cytosine homopobase DNA strands, two bases long. This silver-mediated cytosine tetramer is small enough to permit accurate, realistic modeling by DFT-based quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics methods. In gas phase, our calculations found two energetically favorable configurations distinguished by H-bonding, one with a novel interplane H-bond, and the other with planar H-bonding of silver-bridged bases. Adding solvent favored silver-mediated tetramers with interplane H-bonding. Overall agreement of electronic circular dichroism spectra for the final calculated structure and experiment validates these findings. Our results can guide use of these stabilization mechanisms for devising novel metal-mediated DNA structures.
