Hierarchical self-assembly of nanoparticles in polymer matrix and the nature of the interparticle interaction

A pH-Sensitive Stretchable Zwitterionic Hydrogel with Bipolar Thermoelectricity

Amid growing interest in using body heat for electricity in wearables, creating stretchable devices poses a major challenge. Herein, a hydrogel composed of two core constituents, namely the negatively-charged 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid and the zwitterionic (ZI) sulfobetaine acrylamide, is engineered into a double-network hydrogel. This results in a significant enhancement in mechanical properties, with tensile stress and strain of up to 470.3 kPa and 106.6%, respectively. Moreover, the ZI nature of the polymer enables the fabrication of a device with polar thermoelectric properties by modulating the pH. Thus, the ionic Seebeck coefficient (Si) of the ZI hydrogel ranges from -32.6 to 31.7 mV K-1 as the pH is varied from 1 to 14, giving substantial figure of merit (ZTi) values of 3.8 and 3.6, respectively. Moreover, a prototype stretchable ionic thermoelectric supercapacitor incorporating the ZI hydrogel exhibits notable power densities of 1.8 and 0.9 mW m-2 at pH 1 and 14, respectively. Thus, the present work paves the way for the utilization of pH-sensitive, stretchable ZI hydrogels for thermoelectric applications, with a specific focus on harvesting low-grade waste heat within the temperature range of 25-40 °C.

Randomly Layered Superstructure of In2O3 Truncated Nano-Octahedra and Its High-Pressure Behavior

This study outlines the preparation and characterization of a unique superlattice composed of indium oxide (In2O3) vertex-truncated nano-octahedra, along with an exploration of its response to high-pressure conditions. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy were employed to determine the average circumradius (15.2 nm) of these vertex-truncated building blocks and their planar superstructure. The resilience and response of the superlattice to pressure variations, peaking at 18.01 GPa, were examined using synchrotron-based wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques. The WAXS data revealed no phase transitions, reinforcing the stability of the 2D superlattice composed of random layers in alignment with a p31m planar symmetry as discerned by SAXS. Notably, the SAXS data also unveiled a pressure-induced, irreversible translation of octahedra and ligand interaction occurring within the random layer. Through our examination of these pressure-sensitive behaviors, we identified a distinctive translation model inherent to octahedra and observed modulation of the superlattice cell parameter induced by pressure. This research signifies a noteworthy advancement in deciphering the intricate behaviors of 2D superlattices under a high pressure.

Using small angle x-ray scattering to examine the aggregation mechanism in silica nanoparticle-based ambigels for improved optical clarity

Silica-based aerogels are a promising low-cost solution for improving the insulation efficiency of single-pane windows and reducing the energy consumption required for space heating and cooling. Two key material properties required are high porosity and small pore sizes, which lead to low thermal conductivity and high optical transparency, respectively. However, porosity and pore size are generally directly linked, where high porosity materials also have large pore sizes. This is unfavorable as large pores scatter light, resulting in reduced transmittance in the visible regime. In this work, we utilized preformed silica colloids to explore methods for reducing pore size while maintaining high porosity. The use of preformed colloids allows us to isolate the effect of solution conditions on porous gel network formation by eliminating simultaneous nanoparticle growth and aggregation found when using typical sol-gel molecular-based silica precursors. Specifically, we used in situ synchrotron-based small-angle x-ray scattering during gel formation to better understand how pH, concentration, and colloid size affect particle aggregation and pore structure. Ex situ characterization of dried gels demonstrates that peak pore widths can be reduced from 15 to 13 nm, accompanied by a narrowing of the overall pore size distribution, while maintaining porosities of 70%-80%. Optical transparency is found to increase with decreasing pore sizes while low thermal conductivities ranging from 95 +/- 13 mW/m K are maintained. Mechanical performance was found to depend primarily on effective density and did not show a significant dependence on solution conditions. Overall, our results provide insights into methods to preserve high porosity in nanoparticle-based aerogels while improving optical transparency.

Small-angle X-ray scattering to quantify the incorporation and analyze the disposition of magnetic nanoparticles inside cells

Access to detailed information on cells loaded with nanoparticles with nanoscale precision is of a long-standing interest in many areas of nanomedicine. In this context, designing a single experiment able to provide statistical mean data from a large number of living unsectioned cells concerning information on the nanoparticle size and aggregation inside cell endosomes and accurate nanoparticle cell up-take is of paramount importance. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is presented here as a tool to achieve such relevant data. Experiments were carried out in cultures of B16F0 murine melanoma and A549 human lung adenocarcinoma cell lines loaded with various iron oxide nanostructures displaying distinctive structural characteristics. Five systems of water-dispersible magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) of different size, polydispersity and morphology were analyzed, namely, nearly monodisperse MNP with 11 and 13 nm mean size coated with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid, more polydisperse 6 nm colloids coated with citric acid and two nanoflowers (NF) systems of 24 and 27 nm in size resulting from the aggregation of 8 nm MNP. Up-take was determined for each system using B16F0 cells. Here we show that SAXS pattern provides high resolution information on nanoparticles disposition inside endosomes of the cytoplasm through the structure factor analysis, on nanoparticles size and dispersity after their incorporation by the cell and on up-take quantification from the extrapolation of the intensity in absolute scale to null scattering vector. We also report on the cell culture preparation to reach sensitivity for the observation of MNP inside cell endosomes using high brightness SAXS synchrotron source. Our results show that SAXS can become a valuable tool for analyzing MNP in cells and tissues.

Kinetics and Mechanism of In Situ Metallization of Bulk DNA Films

DNA-templated metallization is broadly investigated in the fabrication of metallic structures by virtue of the unique DNA-metal ion interaction. However, current DNA-templated synthesis is primarily carried out based on pure DNA in an aqueous solution. In this study, we present in situ synthesis of metallic structures in a natural DNA complex bulk film by UV light irradiation, where the growth of silver particles is resolved by in situ time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering and dielectric spectroscopy. Our studies provide physical insights into the kinetics and mechanisms of natural DNA metallization, in correlation with the multi-stage switching operations in the bulk phase, paving the way towards the development of versatile biomaterial composites with tunable physical properties for optical storage, plasmonics, and catalytic applications.

Combined Small-Angle Neutron Scattering/Small-Angle X-ray Scattering Analysis for the Characterization of Silver Nanoparticles Prepared via Photoreduction in Water-in-Oil Microemulsions

In this study, we used small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to investigate the formation process of silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) in water-in-oil (w/o) reverse microemulsions comprising sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT), water, and organic solvents (such as benzene, octane, and decane) by the photoreduction of silver perchlorate (AgClO₄). Combining SANS and SAXS, the structural changes in the w/o microemulsions before and after the formation of Ag NPs via photoreduction were quantitatively evaluated. From the SANS experiments performed using the contrast-variation method, the size of water cores containing Ag NPs and the thickness of the AOT shells were calculated using the core-shell hard-sphere model. The size of the Ag NPs and their aggregates was calculated via SAXS analysis based on the polydisperse sphere model with a Schulz-Zimm distribution. We found that aggregates of three or four primary Ag NPs are formed by, first, the aggregation of water droplets through the entanglement of the tails of the AOT shell, followed by the self-assembly of Ag NPs into their aggregates because of particle-particle attractive interactions.

Mechanism of silica-lysozyme composite formation unravelled by in situ fast SAXS

A quantitative understanding of aggregation mechanisms leading to the formation of composites of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) and proteins in aqueous media is of paramount interest for colloid chemistry. In particular, the interactions between silica (SiO2) NPs and lysozyme (LZM) have attracted attention, because LZM is well-known to adsorb strongly to silica NPs, while at the same time preserving its enzymatic activity. The inherent nature of the aggregation processes leading to NP-LZM composites involves structural changes at length scales from few to at least hundreds of nanometres but also time scales much smaller than one second. To unravel these we used in situ synchrotron-based small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and followed the subtle interparticle interactions in solution at a time resolution of 50 ms/frame (20 fps). We show that if the size of silica NPs (ca. 5 nm diameter) is matched by the dimensions of LZM, the evolving scattering patterns contain a unique structure-factor contribution originating from the presence of LZM. We developed a scattering model and applied it to analyse this structure function, which allowed us to extract structural information on the deformation of lysozyme molecules during aggregation, as well as to derive the mechanisms of composite formation.

Nanoparticle self-assembly: from interactions in suspension to polymer nanocomposites

Recent experimental results using in particular small-angle scattering to characterize the self-assembly of mainly hard spherical nanoparticles into higher ordered structures ranging from fractal aggregates to ordered assemblies are reviewed. The crucial control of interparticle interactions is discussed, from chemical surface-modification, or the action of additives like depletion agents, to the generation of directional patches and the use of external fields. It is shown how the properties of interparticle interactions have been used to allow inducing and possibly controlling aggregation, opening the road to the generation of colloidal molecules or potentially metamaterials. In the last part, studies of the microstructure of polymer nanocomposites as an application of volume-spanning and stress-carrying aggregates are discussed.

Stability of membrane-induced self-assemblies of spherical nanoparticles

The self-assembly of spherical nanoparticles, resulting from their adhesion on tensionless lipid membranes, is investigated through molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained implicit-solvent model. Our simulations indicate that, with increasing adhesion strength, while reshaping the membrane, the nanoparticles aggregate into a sequence of self-assemblies corresponding to in-plane chains, two-row tubular (bitube) chains, annular (ring) chains, and single-row tubular (tube) chains. Annealing scans, with respect to adhesion strength, show that the transitions between the various phases are highly first-order with significant hystereses. Free energy calculations indicate that the gas and single-row tubular chains are stable over wide ranges of adhesion strength. In contrast, the in-plane chains are only stable for small aggregates of NPs, and the bitube and ring chains are long-lived metastable states over a wide range of adhesion strength.

Small Angle X-ray Scattering for Nanoparticle Research

X-ray scattering is a structural characterization tool that has impacted diverse fields of study. It is unique in its ability to examine materials in real time and under realistic sample environments, enabling researchers to understand morphology at nanometer and angstrom length scales using complementary small and wide angle X-ray scattering (SAXS, WAXS), respectively. Herein, we focus on the use of SAXS to examine nanoscale particulate systems. We provide a theoretical foundation for X-ray scattering, considering both form factor and structure factor, as well as the use of correlation functions, which may be used to determine a particle's size, size distribution, shape, and organization into hierarchical structures. The theory is expanded upon with contemporary use cases. Both transmission and reflection (grazing incidence) geometries are addressed, as well as the combination of SAXS with other X-ray and non-X-ray characterization tools. We conclude with an examination of several key areas of research where X-ray scattering has played a pivotal role, including in situ nanoparticle synthesis, nanoparticle assembly, and operando studies of catalysts and energy storage materials. Throughout this review we highlight the unique capabilities of X-ray scattering for structural characterization of materials in their native environment.
