Dye aggregation identified by vibrational coupling using 2D IR spectroscopy

Amine Hole Scavengers Facilitate Both Electron and Hole Transfer in a Nanocrystal/Molecular Hybrid Photocatalyst

A well-known catalyst, fac-Re(4,4'-R₂-bpy)(CO)₃Cl (bpy = bipyridine; R = COOH) (ReC0A), has been widely studied for CO₂ reduction; however, its photocatalytic performance is limited due to its narrow absorption range. Quantum dots (QDs) are efficient light harvesters that offer several advantages, including size tunability and broad absorption in the solar spectrum. Therefore, photoinduced CO₂ reduction over a broad range of the solar spectrum could be enabled by ReC0A catalysts heterogenized on QDs. Here, we investigate interfacial electron transfer from Cd₃P₂ QDs to ReC0A complexes covalently bound on the QD surface, induced by photoexcitation of the QD. We explore the effect of triethylamine, a sacrificial hole scavenger incorporated to replenish the QD with electrons. Through combined transient absorption spectroscopic and computational studies, we demonstrate that electron transfer from Cd₃P₂ to ReC0A can be enhanced by a factor of ∼4 upon addition of triethylamine. We hypothesize that the rate enhancement is a result of triethylamine possibly altering the energetics of the Cd₃P₂-ReC0A system by interacting with the quantum dot surface, deprotonation of the quantum dot, and preferential solvation, resulting in a shift of the conduction band edge to more negative potentials. We also observe the rate enhancement in other QD-electron acceptor systems. Our findings provide mechanistic insights into hole scavenger-quantum dot interactions and how they may influence photoinduced interfacial electron transfer processes.

Solution NMR methods for structural and thermodynamic investigation of nanoparticle adsorption equilibria

Characterization of dynamic processes occurring at the nanoparticle (NP) surface is crucial for developing new and more efficient NP catalysts and materials. Thus, a vast amount of research has been dedicated to developing techniques to characterize sorption equilibria. Over recent years, solution NMR spectroscopy has emerged as a preferred tool for investigating ligand-NP interactions. Indeed, due to its ability to probe exchange dynamics over a wide range of timescales with atomic resolution, solution NMR can provide structural, kinetic, and thermodynamic information on sorption equilibria involving multiple adsorbed species and intermediate states. In this contribution, we review solution NMR methods for characterizing ligand-NP interactions, and provide examples of practical applications using these methods as standalone techniques. In addition, we illustrate how the integrated analysis of several NMR datasets was employed to elucidate the role played by support-substrate interactions in mediating the phenol hydrogenation reaction catalyzed by ceria-supported Pd nanoparticles.

Modular Assembly of Vibrationally and Electronically Coupled Rhenium Bipyridine Carbonyl Complexes on Silicon

Hybrid inorganic/organic heterointerfaces are promising systems for next-generation photocatalytic, photovoltaic, and chemical-sensing applications. Their performance relies strongly on the development of robust and reliable surface passivation and functionalization protocols with (sub)molecular control. The structure, stability, and chemistry of the semiconductor surface determine the functionality of the hybrid assembly. Generally, these modification schemes have to be laboriously developed to satisfy the specific chemical demands of the semiconductor surface. The implementation of a chemically independent, yet highly selective, standardized surface functionalization scheme, compatible with nanoelectronic device fabrication, is of utmost technological relevance. Here, we introduce a modular surface assembly (MSA) approach that allows the covalent anchoring of molecular transition-metal complexes with sub-nanometer precision on any solid material by combining atomic layer deposition (ALD) and selectively self-assembled monolayers of phosphonic acids. ALD, as an essential tool in semiconductor device fabrication, is used to grow conformal aluminum oxide activation coatings, down to sub-nanometer thicknesses, on silicon surfaces to enable a selective step-by-step layer assembly of rhenium(I) bipyridine tricarbonyl molecular complexes. The modular surface assembly of molecular complexes generates precisely structured spatial ensembles with strong intermolecular vibrational and electronic coupling, as demonstrated by infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The structure of the MSA can be chosen to avoid electronic interactions with the semiconductor substrate to exclusively investigate the electronic interactions between the surface-immobilized molecular complexes.

Multimode two-dimensional vibronic spectroscopy. I. Orientational response and polarization-selectivity

Two-dimensional Electronic-Vibrational (2D EV) spectroscopy and two-dimensional Vibrational-Electronic (2D VE) spectroscopy are among the newest additions to the coherent multidimensional spectroscopy toolbox, and they are directly sensitive to vibronic couplings. In this first of two papers, the complete orientational response functions are developed for a model system consisting of two coupled anharmonic oscillators and two electronic states in order to simulate polarization-selective 2D EV and 2D VE spectra with arbitrary combinations of linearly polarized electric fields. Here, we propose analytical methods to isolate desired signals within complicated spectra and to extract the relative orientation between vibrational and vibronic dipole moments of the model system using combinations of polarization-selective 2D EV and 2D VE spectral features. Time-dependent peak amplitudes of coherence peaks are also discussed as means for isolating desired signals within the time-domain. This paper serves as a field guide for using polarization-selective 2D EV and 2D VE spectroscopies to map coupled vibronic coordinates on the molecular frame.

Assessing the Location of Ionic and Molecular Solutes in a Molecularly Heterogeneous and Nonionic Deep Eutectic Solvent

Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are emerging sustainable designer solvents viewed as greener and better alternatives to ionic liquids. Nonionic DESs possess unique properties such as viscosity and hydrophobicity that make them desirable in microextraction applications such as oil-spill remediation. This work builds upon a nonionic DES, NMA–LA DES, previously designed by our group. The NMA–LA DES presents a rich nanoscopic morphology that could be used to allocate solutes of different polarities. In this work, the possibility of solvating different solutes within the nanoscopically heterogeneous molecular structure of the NMA–LA DES is investigated using ionic and molecular solutes. In particular, the localized vibrational transitions in these solutes are used as reporters of the DES molecular structure via vibrational spectroscopy. The FTIR and 2DIR data suggest that the ionic solute is confined in a polar and continuous domain formed by NMA, clearly sensing the direct effect of the change in NMA concentration. In the case of the molecular nonionic and polar solute, the data indicates that the solute resides in the interface between the polar and nonpolar domains. Finally, the results for the nonpolar and nonionic solute (W(CO)₆) are unexpected and less conclusive. Contrary to its polarity, the data suggest that the W(CO)₆ resides within the NMA polar domain of the DES, probably by inducing a domain restructuring in the solvent. However, the data are not conclusive enough to discard the possibility that the restructuring comprises not only the polar domain but also the interface. Overall, our results demonstrate that the NMA–LA DES has nanoscopic domains with affinity to particular molecular properties, such as polarity. Thus, the presented results have a direct implication to separation science.

Heterogenized Molecular Catalysts: Vibrational Sum-Frequency Spectroscopic, Electrochemical, and Theoretical Investigations

Rhenium and manganese bipyridyl tricarbonyl complexes have attracted intense interest for their promising applications in photocatalytic and electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction in both homogeneous and heterogenized systems. To date, there have been extensive studies on immobilizing Re catalysts on solid surfaces for higher catalytic efficiency, reduced catalyst loading, and convenient product separation. However, in order for the heterogenized molecular catalysts to achieve the combination of the best aspects of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, it is essential to understand the fundamental physicochemical properties of such heterogeneous systems, such as surface-bound structures of Re/Mn catalysts, substrate-adsorbate interactions, and photoinduced or electric-field-induced effects on Re/Mn catalysts. For example, the surface may act to (un)block substrates, (un)trap charges, (de)stabilize particular intermediates (and thus affect scaling relations), and shift potentials in different directions, just as protein environments do. The close collaboration between the Lian, Batista, and Kubiak groups has resulted in an integrated approach to investigate how the semiconductor or metal surface affects the properties of the attached catalyst. Synthetic strategies to achieve stable and controlled attachment of Re/Mn molecular catalysts have been developed. Steady-state, time-resolved, and electrochemical vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopic studies have provided insight into the effects of interfacial structures, ultrafast vibrational energy relaxation, and electric field on the Re/Mn catalysts, respectively. Various computational methods utilizing density functional theory (DFT) have been developed and applied to determine the molecular orientation by direct comparison to spectroscopy, unravel vibrational energy relaxation mechanisms, and quantify the interfacial electric field strength of the Re/Mn catalyst systems. This Account starts with a discussion of the recent progress in determining the surface-bound structures of Re catalysts on semiconductor and Au surfaces by a combined vibrational SFG and DFT study. The effects of crystal facet, length of anchoring ligands, and doping of the semiconductor on the bound structures of Re catalysts and of the substrate itself are discussed. This is followed by a summary of the progress in understanding the vibrational relaxation (VR) dynamics of Re catalysts covalently adsorbed on semiconductor and metal surfaces. The VR processes of Re catalysts on TiO₂ films and TiO₂ single crystals and a Re catalyst tethered on Au, particularly the role of electron-hole pair (EHP)-induced coupling on the VR of the Re catalyst bound on Au, are discussed. The Account also summarizes recent studies in quantifying the electric field strength experienced by the catalytically active site of the Re/Mn catalyst bound on a Au electrode based on a combined electrochemical SFG and DFT study of the Stark tuning of the CO stretching modes of these catalysts. Finally, future research directions on surface-immobilized molecular catalyst systems are discussed.

Enhancing the signal strength of surface sensitive 2D IR spectroscopy

Spectroscopic techniques that are capable of measuring surfaces and interfaces must overcome two technical challenges: one, the low coverage of molecules at the surface, and two, discerning between signals from the bulk and surface. We present surface enhanced attenuated reflection 2D infrared (SEAR 2D IR) spectroscopy, a method that combines localized surface plasmons with a reflection pump-probe geometry to achieve monolayer sensitivity. The method is demonstrated at 6 µm with the amide I band of a model peptide, a cysteine terminated α-helical peptide tethered to a gold surface. Using SEAR 2D IR spectroscopy, the signal from this sample is enhanced 20 000-times over a monolayer on a dielectric surface. Like attenuated total reflection IR spectroscopy, SEAR 2D IR spectroscopy can be applied to strongly absorbing solvents. We demonstrated this capability by solvating a peptide monolayer with H₂O, which cannot normally be used when measuring the amide I band. SEAR 2D IR spectroscopy will be advantageous for studying chemical reactions at electrochemical surfaces, interfacial charge transfer in photovoltaics, and structural changes of transmembrane proteins in lipid membranes.

Vibrational Spectroscopy on Photoexcited Dye-Sensitized Films via Pump-Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing

Molecular sensitization of semiconductor films is an important technology for energy and environmental applications including solar energy conversion, photocatalytic hydrogen production, and water purification. Dye-sensitized films are also scientifically complex and interesting systems with a long history of research. In most applications, photoinduced heterogeneous electron transfer (HET) at the molecule/semiconductor interface is of critical importance, and while great progress has been made in understanding HET, many open questions remain. Of particular interest is the role of combined electronic and vibrational effects and coherence of the dye during HET. The ultrafast nature of the process, the rapid intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution, and vibrational cooling present complications in the study of vibronic coupling in HET. We present the application of a time domain vibrational spectroscopy-pump-degenerate four-wave mixing (pump-DFWM)-to dye-sensitized solid-state semiconductor films. Pump-DFWM can measure Raman-active vibrational modes that are triggered by excitation of the sample with an actinic pump pulse. Modifications to the instrument for solid-state samples and its application to an anatase TiO₂ film sensitized by a Zn-porphyrin dye are discussed. We show an effective combination of experimental techniques to overcome typical challenges in measuring solid-state samples with laser spectroscopy and observe molecular vibrations following HET in a picosecond time window. The cation spectrum of the dye shows modes that can be assigned to the linker group and a mode that is localized on the Zn-phorphyrin chromophore and that is connected to photoexcitation.

Coherent two-dimensional fluorescence micro-spectroscopy

We have developed coherent two-dimensional (2D) fluorescence micro-spectroscopy which probes the nonlinear optical response at surfaces via fluorescence detection with sub-micron spatial resolution. This enables the investigation of microscopic variations in heterogeneous systems. An LCD-based pulse shaper in 4f geometry is used to create collinear trains of 12-fs visible/NIR laser pulses in the focus of an NA = 1.4 immersion-oil microscope objective. We demonstrate the capabilities of the new method by presenting 2D spectra, analyzed via phase cycling, as a function of position of selected sub-micron regions from a laterally nanostructured polycrystalline thin film of fluorinated zinc phthalocyanine (F₁₆ZnPc).

Electron-Hole-Pair-Induced Vibrational Energy Relaxation of Rhenium Catalysts on Gold Surfaces

A combination of time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy and density functional theory techniques have been applied to study the vibrational energy relaxation dynamics of the Re(4,4'-dicyano-2,2'-bipyridine)(CO)₃Cl (Re(CO)₃Cl) catalyst for CO₂ to CO conversion bound to gold surfaces. The kinetics of vibrational relaxation exhibits a biexponential decay including an ultrafast initial relaxation and complete recovery of the ground vibrational state. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and time-dependent perturbation theory reveal the former to be due to vibrational population exchange between CO stretching modes and the latter to be a combination of intramolecular vibrational relaxation (IVR) and electron-hole pair (EHP)-induced energy transfer into the gold substrate. EHP-induced energy transfer from the Re(CO)₃Cl adsorbate into the gold surface occurs on the same time scale as IVR of Re(CO)₃Cl in aprotic solvents. Therefore, it is expected to be particularly relevant to understanding the reduced catalytic activity of the homogeneous catalyst when anchored to a metal surface.

Plasmonic Substrates Do Not Promote Vibrational Energy Transfer at Solid-Liquid Interfaces

Intermolecular vibrational energy transfer in monolayers of isotopically mixed rhenium carbonyl complexes at solid-liquid interfaces is investigated with the help of ultrafast 2D Attenuated Total Reflectance Infrared (2D ATR IR) spectroscopy in dependence of plasmonic surface enhancement effects. Dielectric and plasmonic materials are used to demonstrate that plasmonic effects have no impact on the vibrational energy transfer rate in a regime of moderate IR surface enhancement (enhancement factors up to ca. 30). This result can be explained with the common image-dipole picture. The vibrational energy transfer rate thus can be used as a direct observable to determine intermolecular distances on surfaces, regardless of their plasmonic properties.

Ultrafast structural molecular dynamics investigated with 2D infrared spectroscopy methods

Ultrafast, multi-dimensional infrared (IR) spectroscopy has been advanced in recent years to a versatile analytical tool with a broad range of applications to elucidate molecular structure on ultrafast timescales, and it can be used for samples in a many different environments. Following a short and general introduction on the benefits of 2D IR spectroscopy, the first part of this chapter contains a brief discussion on basic descriptions and conceptual considerations of 2D IR spectroscopy. Outstanding classical applications of 2D IR are used afterwards to highlight the strengths and basic applicability of the method. This includes the identification of vibrational coupling in molecules, characterization of spectral diffusion dynamics, chemical exchange of chemical bond formation and breaking, as well as dynamics of intra- and intermolecular energy transfer for molecules in bulk solution and thin films. In the second part, several important, recently developed variants and new applications of 2D IR spectroscopy are introduced. These methods focus on (i) applications to molecules under two- and three-dimensional confinement, (ii) the combination of 2D IR with electrochemistry, (iii) ultrafast 2D IR in conjunction with diffraction-limited microscopy, (iv) several variants of non-equilibrium 2D IR spectroscopy such as transient 2D IR and 3D IR, and (v) extensions of the pump and probe spectral regions for multi-dimensional vibrational spectroscopy towards mixed vibrational-electronic spectroscopies. In light of these examples, the important open scientific and conceptual questions with regard to intra- and intermolecular dynamics are highlighted. Such questions can be tackled with the existing arsenal of experimental variants of 2D IR spectroscopy to promote the understanding of fundamentally new aspects in chemistry, biology and materials science. The final part of the chapter introduces several concepts of currently performed technical developments, which aim at exploiting 2D IR spectroscopy as an analytical tool. Such developments embrace the combination of 2D IR spectroscopy and plasmonic spectroscopy for ultrasensitive analytics, merging 2D IR spectroscopy with ultra-high-resolution microscopy (nanoscopy), future variants of transient 2D IR methods, or 2D IR in conjunction with microfluidics. It is expected that these techniques will allow for groundbreaking research in many new areas of natural sciences.

Molecule-specific interactions of diatomic adsorbates at metal-liquid interfaces

Ultrafast vibrational dynamics of small molecules on platinum (Pt) layers in water are investigated using 2D attenuated total reflectance IR spectroscopy. Isotope combinations of carbon monoxide and cyanide are used to elucidate inter-adsorbate and substrate-adsorbate interactions. Despite observed cross-peaks in the CO spectra, we conclude that the molecules are not vibrationally coupled. Rather, strong substrate-adsorbate interactions evoke rapid (∼2 ps) vibrational relaxation from the adsorbate into the Pt layer, leading to thermal cross-peaks. In the case of CN, vibrational relaxation is significantly slower (∼10 ps) and dominated by adsorbate-solvent interactions, while the coupling to the substrate is negligible.

Ultrafast Vibrational Energy Transfer in Catalytic Monolayers at Solid-Liquid Interfaces

We investigate the ultrafast vibrational dynamics of monolayers from adsorbed rhenium-carbonyl CO₂-reduction catalysts on a semiconductor surface (indium-tin-oxide (ITO)) with ultrafast two-dimensional attenuated total reflection infrared (2D ATR IR) spectroscopy. The complexes are partially equipped with isotope-labeled (¹³C) carbonyl ligands to generate two spectroscopically distinguishable forms of the molecules. Ultrafast vibrational energy transfer between the molecules is observed via the temporal evolution of cross-peaks between their symmetric carbonyl stretching vibrations. These contributions appear with time constant of 70 and 90 ps for downhill and uphill energy transfer, respectively. The energy transfer is thus markedly slower than any of the other intramolecular dynamics. From the transfer rate, an intermolecular distance of ∼4-5 Å can be estimated, close to the van der Waals distance of the molecular head groups. The present paper presents an important cornerstone for a better understanding of intermolecular coupling mechanisms of molecules on surfaces and explains the absence of similar features in earlier studies.

Interferometric 2D Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy Reveals Structural Heterogeneity of Catalytic Monolayers on Transparent Materials

Molecular monolayers exhibit structural and dynamical properties that are different from their bulk counterparts due to their interaction with the substrate. Extracting these distinct properties is crucial for a better understanding of processes such as heterogeneous catalysis and interfacial charge transfer. Ultrafast nonlinear spectroscopic techniques such as 2D infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy are powerful tools for understanding molecular dynamics in complex bulk systems. Here, we build on technical advancements in 2D IR and heterodyne-detected sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy to study a CO₂ reduction catalyst on nanostructured TiO₂ with interferometric 2D SFG spectroscopy. Our method combines phase-stable heterodyne detection employing an external local oscillator with a broad-band pump pulse pair to provide the first high spectral and temporal resolution 2D SFG spectra of a transparent material. We determine the overall molecular orientation of the catalyst and find that there is a static structural heterogeneity reflective of different local environments at the surface.

NOESY-Like 2D-IR Spectroscopy Reveals Non-Gaussian Dynamics

We have identified an unexpected signature of non-Gaussian dynamics in a conventional 2D IR measurement on a system with rapid intermolecular vibrational energy transfer. In a ternary mixture of the CO₂ reduction photocatalyst, ReCl(bpy)(CO)₃, NaSCN, and THF solvent, preferential association between the metal carbonyl catalyst and the NaSCN ion pairs facilitates intermolecular energy transfer on a few picoseconds time scale. Monitoring the cross peak between the highest frequency metal carbonyl band and the CN bands of NaSCN contact ion pairs, we find a striking time evolution of the cross-peak position on the detection axis. This frequency shift, which is due to spectral diffusion following intermolecular energy transfer, occurs with a time scale that is distinct from either the donor or acceptor spectral diffusion measured simultaneously. We argue that the energy transfer, a second-order Förster process, effectively increases the dimensionality of the 2D-IR spectroscopy and thus enables sensitivity to non-Gaussian dynamics.

Experimental implementations of 2D IR spectroscopy through a horizontal pulse shaper design and a focal plane array detector

Aided by advances in optical engineering, two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D IR) has developed into a promising method for probing structural dynamics in biophysics and material science. We report two new advances for 2D IR spectrometers. First, we report a fully reflective and totally horizontal pulse shaper, which significantly simplifies alignment. Second, we demonstrate the applicability of mid-IR focal plane arrays (FPAs) as suitable detectors in 2D IR experiments. FPAs have more pixels than conventional linear arrays and can be used to multiplex optical detection. We simultaneously measure the spectra of a reference beam, which improves the signal-to-noise by a factor of 4; and two additional beams that are orthogonally polarized probe pulses for 2D IR anisotropy experiments.
