Modulating drift dynamics of circle swimmers by periodic potentials

We propose a method to modulate the drifting motion of overdamped circle swimmers in steady fluid flows by means of static sinusoidal potentials. Using Langevin formalism, we study drift velocity as a function of potential strength and wavelength with and without diffusional motion. Drift velocity is essentially quantized without diffusion, but in the presence of noise, the displacement per cycle has a continuous range. As a function of dimensionless potential wave number, domains of damped oscillatory and plateau regimes are observed in the drift velocity diagram. At weak potential and fluid velocity less than powered velocity, there is also a regime where drift velocity exceeds the fluid velocity. Methods based on these results can be used to separate biological and artificial circle swimmers based on their dynamical properties.

Large-scale demixing in a binary mixture of cells with rigidity disparity in biological tissues

Physical demixing on large scales of embryonic cell populations is fundamental to metazoan development, but whether a rigidity disparity alone is sufficient to driving large-scale demixing in a binary mixture of cell tissues is still an open question. To answer this question, we study mixing and demixing in a binary mixture of rigidity disparity cell tissues without heterotypic interactions using the Voronoi-based cellular model. Under suitable system parameters, the solid-like cells in the mixture can aggregate into a large cluster and the large-scale demixing occurs, which addresses that a rigidity disparity alone is sufficient to drive large-scale demixing. Remarkably, there exists an optimal temperature or rigidity disparity at which the binary mixture can be separated to the maximum extent. The necessary condition for the separation of mixtures is that the two types of cells are solid-like and liquid-like, respectively. The observation of robust demixing on large scales suggests that the sorting of progenitor cells may occur very early in the development process before robust heterotypic interfacial tensions are established. Our findings are relevant to understanding the mechanisms that drive cell sorting in confluent tissues.

Behavior of chiral active nematics confined to nanoscopic circular region

We performed molecular dynamic simulations of a model active nematic confined to a two-dimensional nanoscopic circular region under both tangential and radial anchoring boundary conditions. This active material is assumed to be composed of elongated chiral particles which interact with each other by means of isotropic Lennard-Jones and anisotropic Maier-Saupe-like potentials. These particles have the lateral appendage emitting a jet of some substance generated by a certain internal chemical reaction. As a result, such elongated particles are exposed to both the reactive self-propelled force and the torque that provide an additional translational movement of particles and a self-rotation with respect to their geometric centers. It has been found that the chiral active nematics under consideration form time-dependent vortex-like structures with two +1/2 topological defects which are similar to experimentally observed structures in active materials.

Diffusion of active particles with angular velocity reversal

Biological and synthetic microswimmers display a wide range of swimming trajectories depending on driving forces and torques. In this paper we consider a simple overdamped model of self-propelled particles with a constant self-propulsion speed but an angular velocity that varies in time. Specifically, we consider the case of both deterministic and stochastic angular velocity reversals, mimicking several synthetic active matter systems, such as propelled droplets. The orientational correlation function and effective diffusivity is studied using Langevin dynamics simulations and perturbative methods.

Tunable depletion force in active and crowded environments

We adopt two-dimensional Langevin dynamics simulations to study the effective interactions between two passive colloids in a bath crowded with active particles. We mainly pay attention to the significant effects of active particle size, crowding-activity coupling, and chirality. First, a transition of depletion force from repulsion to attraction is revealed by varying particle size. Moreover, larger active crowders with sufficient activity can generate strong attractive force, which is in contrast to the cage effect in passive media. It is interesting that the attraction induced by large active crowders follows a linear scaling with the persistence length of active particles. Second, the effective force also experiences a transition from repulsion to attraction as volume fraction increases, as a consequence of the competition between the two contrastive factors of activity and crowding. As bath volume fraction is relatively small, activity generates a dominant repulsion force, while as the bath becomes concentrated, crowding-induced attraction becomes overwhelming. Lastly, in a chiral bath, we observe a very surprising oscillation phenomenon of active depletion force, showing an evident quasiperiodic variation with increasing chirality. Aggregation of active particles in the vicinity of the colloids is carefully examined, which serves as a reasonable picture for our observations. Our findings provide an inspiring strategy for the tunable active depletion force by crowding, activity, and chirality.

Binary mixtures of active and passive particles on a sphere

We study the cooperation and segregation dynamics of binary mixtures of active and passive particles on a sphere. According to the competition between rotational diffusion and polar alignment, we find three distinct phases: a mixed phase and two different demixed phases. When rotational diffusion dominates the dynamics, the demixing is due to the aggregation of passive particles, where active and passive particles respectively occupy two hemispheres. When polar alignment is dominated, the demixing is caused by the aggregation of active particles, where active particles occupy the equator of the sphere and passive particles occupy the two poles of the sphere. In this case, there exist a circulating band cluster and two cambered surface clusters, which is a purely curvature-driven effect with no equivalent in the planar model. When rotational diffusion and polar alignment are comparable, particles are completely mixed. Our findings are relevant to the experimental pursuit of segregation dynamics of binary mixtures on curved surfaces.

Rectification and separation of mixtures of active and passive particles driven by temperature difference

Transport and separation of binary mixtures of active and passive particles are investigated in the presence of temperature differences. It is found that temperature differences can strongly affect the rectification and separation of the mixtures. For active particles, there exists an optimal temperature difference at which the rectified efficiency is maximal. Passive particles are not propelled and move by collisions with active particles, so the response to temperature differences is more complicated. By changing the system parameters, active particles can change their directions, while passive particles always move in the same direction. The simulation results show that the separation of mixtures is sensitive to the system parameters, such as the angular velocity, the temperature difference, and the polar alignment. The mixed particles can be completely separated under certain conditions.

Simultaneous phase separation and pattern formation in chiral active mixtures

Chiral active particles, or self-propelled circle swimmers, from sperm cells to asymmetric Janus colloids, form a rich set of patterns, which are different from those seen in linear swimmers. Such patterns have mainly been explored for identical circle swimmers, while real-world circle swimmers typically possess a frequency distribution. Here we show that even the simplest mixture of (velocity-aligning) circle swimmers with two different frequencies hosts a complex world of superstructures: The most remarkable example comprises a microflock pattern, formed in one species, while the other species phase separates and forms a macrocluster, coexisting with a gas phase. Here one species microphase separates and selects a characteristic length scale, whereas the other one macrophase separates and selects a density. A second notable example, here occurring in an isotropic system, are patterns comprising two different characteristic length scales, which are controllable via frequency and swimming speed of the individual particles.

Rectification of chiral active particles driven by transversal temperature difference

Rectification of chiral active particles driven by transversal temperature difference is investigated in a two-dimensional periodic channel. Chiral active particles can be rectified by transversal temperature difference. Transport behaviors are qualitatively different for different wall boundary conditions. For the sliding boundary condition, the direction of transport completely depends on the chirality of particles. The average velocity is a peaked function of angular velocity or temperature difference. The average velocity increases linearly with the self-propulsion speed, while it decreases monotonically with the increase in the packing fraction. For randomized boundary condition, the transport behaviors become complex. When self-propulsion speed is small, in contrast with the sliding boundary condition, particles move in the opposite direction. However, for large self-propulsion speed, current reversals can occur by continuously changing the system parameters (angular velocity, temperature difference, packing fraction, and width of the channel).

Homogeneous and heterogeneous populations of active rods in two-dimensional channels

Active swarms, consisting of individual agents which consume energy to move or produce work, are known to generate a diverse range of collective behaviors. Many examples of active swarms are biological in nature (e.g., fish shoals and bird flocks) and have been modeled extensively by numerical simulations. Such simulations of swarms usually assume that the swarm is homogeneous; that is, every agent has exactly the same dynamical properties. However, many biological swarms are highly heterogeneous, such as multispecies communities of micro-organisms in soil, and individual species may have a wide range of different physical properties. Here we explore heterogeneity by developing a simple model for the dynamics of a swarm of motile heterogeneous rodlike bacteria in the absence of hydrodynamic effects. Using molecular dynamics simulations of active rods confined within a two-dimensional rectangular channel, we first explore the case of homogeneous swarms and show that the key parameter governing both dynamics is ratio of the motility force to the steric force. Next we explore heterogeneous or mixed swarms in which the constituent self-propelled rods have a range of motilities and steric interactions. Our results show that the confining boundaries play a strong role in driving the segregation of mixed populations.

Beating of grafted chains induced by active Brownian particles

We study the interplay between active Brownian particles (ABPs) and a "hairy" surface in two-dimensional geometry. We find that the increase of propelling force leads to and enhances inhomogeneous accumulation of ABPs inside the brush region. Oscillation of chain bundles (beating like cilia) is found in company with the formation and disassembly of a dynamic cluster of ABPs at large propelling forces. Meanwhile chains are stretched and pushed down due to the effective shear force by ABPs. The decrease of the average brush thickness with propelling force reflects the growth of the beating amplitude of chain bundles. Furthermore, the beating phenomenon is investigated in a simple single-chain system. We find that the chain swings regularly with a major oscillatory period, which increases with chain length and decreases with the increase of propelling force. We build a theory to describe the phenomenon and the predictions on the relationship between the period and amplitude for various chain lengths, and propelling forces agree very well with simulation data.

Mixing and demixing of binary mixtures of polar chiral active particles

We study a binary mixture of polar chiral (counterclockwise or clockwise) active particles in a two-dimensional box with periodic boundary conditions. Besides the excluded volume interactions between particles, the particles are also subjected to the polar velocity alignment. From the extensive Brownian dynamics simulations, it is found that the particle configuration (mixing or demixing) is determined by the competition between the chirality difference and the polar velocity alignment. When the chirality difference competes with the polar velocity alignment, the clockwise particles aggregate in one cluster and the counterclockwise particles aggregate in the other cluster; thus, the particles are demixed and can be separated. However, when the chirality difference or the polar velocity alignment is dominant, the particles are mixed. Our findings could be used for the experimental pursuit of the separation of binary mixtures of chiral active particles.

Intermediate scattering function of an anisotropic Brownian circle swimmer

Microswimmers exhibit noisy circular motion due to asymmetric propulsion mechanisms, their chiral body shape, or by hydrodynamic couplings in the vicinity of surfaces. Here, we employ the Brownian circle swimmer model and characterize theoretically the dynamics in terms of the directly measurable intermediate scattering function. We derive the associated Fokker-Planck equation for the conditional probabilities and provide an exact solution in terms of generalizations of the Mathieu functions. Different spatiotemporal regimes are identified reflecting the bare translational diffusion at large wavenumbers, the persistent circular motion at intermediate wavenumbers and an enhanced effective diffusion at small wavenumbers. In particular, the circular motion of the particle manifests itself in characteristic oscillations at a plateau of the intermediate scattering function for wavenumbers probing the radius.
