A method for the direct measurement of electronic site populations in a molecular aggregate using two-dimensional electronic-vibrational spectroscopy

Theoretical model of femtosecond coherence spectroscopy of vibronic excitons in molecular aggregates

When used as pump pulses in transient absorption spectroscopy measurements, femtosecond laser pulses can produce oscillatory signals known as quantum beats. The quantum beats arise from coherent superpositions of the states of the sample and are best studied in the Fourier domain using Femtosecond Coherence Spectroscopy (FCS), which consists of one-dimensional amplitude and phase plots of a specified oscillation frequency as a function of the detection frequency. Prior works have shown ubiquitous amplitude nodes and π phase shifts in FCS from excited-state vibrational wavepackets in monomer samples. However, the FCS arising from vibronic-exciton states in molecular aggregates have not been studied theoretically. Here, we use a model of vibronic-exciton states in molecular dimers based on displaced harmonic oscillators to simulate FCS for dimers in two important cases. Simulations reveal distinct spectral signatures of excited-state vibronic-exciton coherences in molecular dimers that may be used to distinguish them from monomer vibrational coherences. A salient result is that, for certain relative orientations of the transition dipoles, the key resonance condition between the electronic coupling and the frequency of the vibrational mode may yield strong enhancement of the quantum-beat amplitude and, perhaps, also cause a significant decrease of the oscillation frequency to a value far lower than the vibrational frequency. Future studies using these results will lead to new insights into the excited-state coherences generated in photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes.

Orientational Coupling of Molecules at Interfaces Revealed by Two-Dimensional Electronic-Vibrational Sum Frequency Generation (2D-EVSFG)

Photoinduced relaxation processes at interfaces are intimately related to many fields such as solar energy conversion, photocatalysis, and photosynthesis. Vibronic coupling plays a key role in the fundamental steps of the interface-related photoinduced relaxation processes. Vibronic coupling at interfaces is expected to be different from that in bulk due to the unique environment. However, vibronic coupling at interfaces has not been well understood due to the lack of experimental tools. We have recently developed a two-dimensional electronic-vibrational sum frequency generation (2D-EVSFG) for vibronic coupling at interfaces. In this work, we present orientational correlations in vibronic couplings of electronic and vibrational transition dipoles as well as the structural evolution of photoinduced excited states of molecules at interfaces with the 2D-EVSFG technique. We used malachite green molecules at the air/water interface as an example, to be compared with those in bulk revealed by 2D-EV. Together with polarized VSFG and ESHG experiments, polarized 2D-EVSFG spectra were used to extract relative orientations of an electronic transition dipole and vibrational transition dipoles at the interface. Combined with molecular dynamics calculations, time-dependent 2D-EVSFG data have demonstrated that structural evolutions of photoinduced excited states at the interface have different behaviors than those in bulk. Our results showed that photoexcitation leads to intramolecular charge transfer but no conical interactions in 25 ps. Restricted environment and orientational orderings of molecules at the interface are responsible for the unique features of vibronic coupling.

From antenna to reaction center: Pathways of ultrafast energy and charge transfer in photosystem II

The photosystem II core complex (PSII-CC) is a photosynthetic complex that contains antenna proteins, which collect energy from sunlight, and a reaction center, which converts the collected energy to redox potential. Understanding the interplay between the antenna proteins and the reaction center will facilitate the development of more efficient solar energy conversion technologies. Here, we study the sub-100-ps dynamics of PSII-CC with two-dimensional electronic-vibrational spectroscopy, which connects energy flows with physical space, allowing a direct mapping of energy transfer pathways. Our results reveal a complex dynamical scheme which includes a specific pathway that connects CP43 to the reaction center. Resolving this pathway experimentally provides insights into the energy conversion processes in natural photosynthesis.

The photosystem II core complex (PSII-CC) is the smallest subunit of the oxygenic photosynthetic apparatus that contains core antennas and a reaction center, which together allow for rapid energy transfer and charge separation, ultimately leading to efficient solar energy conversion. However, there is a lack of consensus on the interplay between the energy transfer and charge separation dynamics of the core complex. Here, we report the application of two-dimensional electronic-vibrational (2DEV) spectroscopy to the spinach PSII-CC at 77 K. The simultaneous temporal and spectral resolution afforded by 2DEV spectroscopy facilitates the separation and direct assignment of coexisting dynamical processes. Our results show that the dominant dynamics of the PSII-CC are distinct in different excitation energy regions. By separating the excitation regions, we are able to distinguish the intraprotein dynamics and interprotein energy transfer. Additionally, with the improved resolution, we are able to identify the key pigments involved in the pathways, allowing for a direct connection between dynamical and structural information. Specifically, we show that C505 in CP43 and the peripheral chlorophyll Chlz_D1 in the reaction center are most likely responsible for energy transfer from CP43 to the reaction center.

Computational spectroscopy of complex systems

Numerous linear and non-linear spectroscopic techniques have been developed to elucidate structural and functional information of complex systems ranging from natural systems, such as proteins and light-harvesting systems, to synthetic systems, such as solar cell materials and light-emitting diodes. The obtained experimental data can be challenging to interpret due to the complexity and potential overlapping spectral signatures. Therefore, computational spectroscopy plays a crucial role in the interpretation and understanding of spectral observables of complex systems. Computational modeling of various spectroscopic techniques has seen significant developments in the past decade, when it comes to the systems that can be addressed, the size and complexity of the sample types, the accuracy of the methods, and the spectroscopic techniques that can be addressed. In this Perspective, I will review the computational spectroscopy methods that have been developed and applied for infrared and visible spectroscopies in the condensed phase. I will discuss some of the questions that this has allowed answering. Finally, I will discuss current and future challenges and how these may be addressed.

Two-dimensional electronic-vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy for interactions of electronic and nuclear motions at interfaces

Interactions of electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom are essential for understanding excited-states relaxation pathways of molecular systems at interfaces and surfaces. Here, we present the development of interface-specific two-dimensional electronic-vibrational sum frequency generation (2D-EVSFG) spectroscopy for electronic-vibrational couplings for excited states at interfaces and surfaces. We demonstrate this 2D-EVSFG technique by investigating photoexcited interface-active (E)-4-((4-(dihexylamino) phenyl)diazinyl)-1-methylpyridin-1- lum (AP3) molecules at the air-water interface as an example. Our 2D-EVSFG experiments show strong vibronic couplings of interfacial AP3 molecules upon photoexcitation and subsequent relaxation of a locally excited (LE) state. Time-dependent 2D-EVSFG experiments indicate that the relaxation of the LE state, S ₂, is strongly coupled with two high-frequency modes of 1,529.1 and 1,568.1 cm^-1 Quantum chemistry calculations further verify that the strong vibronic couplings of the two vibrations promote the transition from the S ₂ state to the lower excited state S ₁ We believe that this development of 2D-EVSFG opens up an avenue of understanding excited-state dynamics related to interfaces and surfaces.

Vibronic coupling in energy transfer dynamics and two-dimensional electronic-vibrational spectra

We introduce a heterodimer model in which multiple mechanisms of vibronic coupling and their impact on energy transfer can be explicitly studied. We consider vibronic coupling that arises through either Franck-Condon activity in which each site in the heterodimer has a local electron-phonon coupling or Herzberg-Teller activity in which the transition dipole moment coupling the sites has an explicit vibrational mode-dependence. We have computed two-dimensional electronic-vibrational (2DEV) spectra for this model while varying the magnitude of these two effects and find that 2DEV spectra contain static and dynamic signatures of both types of vibronic coupling. Franck-Condon activity emerges through a change in the observed excitonic structure, while Herzberg-Teller activity is evident in the appearance of significant side-band transitions that mimic the lower-energy excitonic structure. A comparison of quantum beating patterns obtained from analysis of the simulated 2DEV spectra shows that this technique can report on the mechanism of energy transfer, elucidating a means of experimentally determining the role of specific vibronic coupling mechanisms in such processes.

Two-dimensional electronic-vibrational spectroscopy: Exploring the interplay of electrons and nuclei in excited state molecular dynamics

Two-dimensional electronic-vibrational spectroscopy (2DEVS) is an emerging spectroscopic technique which exploits two different frequency ranges for the excitation (visible) and detection (infrared) axes of a 2D spectrum. In contrast to degenerate 2D techniques, such as 2D electronic or 2D infrared spectroscopy, the spectral features of a 2DEV spectrum report cross correlations between fluctuating electronic and vibrational energy gaps rather than autocorrelations as in the degenerate spectroscopies. The center line slope of the spectral features reports on this cross correlation function directly and can reveal specific electronic-vibrational couplings and rapid changes in the electronic structure, for example. The involvement of the two types of transition moments, visible and infrared, makes 2DEVS very sensitive to electronic and vibronic mixing. 2DEV spectra also feature improved spectral resolution, making the method valuable for unraveling the highly congested spectra of molecular complexes. The unique features of 2DEVS are illustrated in this paper with specific examples and their origin described at an intuitive level with references to formal derivations provided. Although early in its development and far from fully explored, 2DEVS has already proven to be a valuable addition to the tool box of ultrafast nonlinear optical spectroscopy and is of promising potential in future efforts to explore the intricate connection between electronic and vibrational nuclear degrees of freedom in energy and charge transport applications.

Role of Skeletal and O-H Vibrational Motions in the Ultrafast Excited-State Relaxation Dynamics of Alizarin

The role of two skeletal (C═C and C═O stretch) and O-H vibrational motions in the internal conversion dynamics associated with the coupled S₁(ππ*, A') -S₂(nπ*, A″) potential energy surfaces of alizarin are investigated theoretically. Quantum wavepacket dynamics simulations reveal a nonadiabatic population transfer from the "bright" S₁(ππ*, A') to "dark" S₂(nπ*, A″) state on a time scale of 10 fs. A detailed analysis of computed structural parameters, energetics, and time-dependent observables suggest that these vibrations promote the nonadiabatic dynamics before initiating the proton transfer process. We also discuss how the simultaneous evolution of multidimensional dynamics involving several vibrational degrees of freedom would increase the complexity, while analyzing the spectral and kinetic data of time-resolved spectroscopy measurements.

Solvent Mediated Excited State Proton Transfer in Indigo Carmine

Excited state proton transfer (ESPT) is thought to be responsible for the photostability of biological molecules, including DNA and proteins, and natural dyes such as indigo. However, the mechanistic role of the solvent interaction in driving ESPT is not well understood. Here, the electronic excited state deactivation dynamics of indigo carmine (InC) is mapped by visible pump-infrared probe and two-dimensional electronic-vibrational (2DEV) spectroscopy and complemented by electronic structure calculations. The observed dynamics reveal notable differences between InC in a protic solvent, D₂O, and an aprotic solvent, deuterated dimethyl sulfoxide (dDMSO). Notably, an acceleration in the excited state decay is observed in D₂O (<10 ps) compared to dDMSO (130 ps). Our data reveals clear evidence for ESPT in D₂O accompanied by a significant change in dipole moment, which is found not to occur in dDMSO. We conclude that the ability of protic solvents to form intermolecular H-bonds with InC enables ESPT, which facilitates a rapid nonradiative S₁ → S₀ transition via the monoenol intermediate.

Vibronic mixing enables ultrafast energy flow in light-harvesting complex II

Since the discovery of quantum beats in the two-dimensional electronic spectra of photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes over a decade ago, the origin and mechanistic function of these beats in photosynthetic light-harvesting has been extensively debated. The current consensus is that these long-lived oscillatory features likely result from electronic-vibrational mixing, however, it remains uncertain if such mixing significantly influences energy transport. Here, we examine the interplay between the electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom (DoF) during the excitation energy transfer (EET) dynamics of light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) with two-dimensional electronic-vibrational spectroscopy. Particularly, we show the involvement of the nuclear DoF during EET through the participation of higher-lying vibronic chlorophyll states and assign observed oscillatory features to specific EET pathways, demonstrating a significant step in mapping evolution from energy to physical space. These frequencies correspond to known vibrational modes of chlorophyll, suggesting that electronic-vibrational mixing facilitates rapid EET over moderately size energy gaps.

Exploring ultraviolet photoinduced charge-transfer dynamics in a model dinucleotide of guanine and thymine

An understanding of the initial photoexcited states of DNA is essential to unravelling deleterious photoinduced chemical reactions and the intrinsic ultrafast photoprotection of the genetic code for all life. In our combined experimental and theoretical study, we have elucidated the primary non-radiative relaxation dynamics of a model nucleotide of guanine and thymine (2'-deoxyguanosine 3'-monophosphate 5'-thymidine, d(GpT)) in buffered aqueous solution. Experimentally, we unequivocally demonstrate that the Franck-Condon excited states of d(GpT) are significantly delocalised across both nucleobases, and mediate d(G⁺pT^-) exciplex product formation on an ultrafast (<350 fs) timescale. Theoretical studies show that the nature of the vertical excited states is very dependent on the specific geometry of the dinucleotide, and dictate the degree of delocalised, charge-transfer or localised character. Our mechanism for prompt exciplex formation involves a rapid change in electronic structure and includes a diabatic surface crossing very close to the Franck-Condon region mediating fast d(G⁺pT^-) formation. Exciplexes are quickly converted back to neutral ground state molecules on a ∼10 ps timescale with a high quantum yield, ensuring the photostability of the nucleotide sequence.

Two-Dimensional Electronic-Vibrational Spectroscopy of Coupled Molecular Complexes: A Near-Analytical Approach

This work presents theoretical calculations of the two-dimensional electronic-vibrational (2DEV) spectrum of a vibronically coupled molecular dimer using a near-analytical method. In strongly coupled dimers, where the IR mode is resonant with the electronic energy gap between the excitons, multiple infrared transitions become allowed that are forbidden in weakly coupled systems that have a nonresonant IR mode. This formalism enables the coherences and population contributions to be explored separately and allows efficient calculation of relaxation rates between the vibronic states. At short times, we find strong contributions of vibronic coherences to the 2DEV spectra. They decay fairly rapidly, giving rise to strong population signals. Although the interpretation of 2DEV spectra is considerably more complex than that for weakly coupled systems, the richness of the spectra and the necessity to consider both visible and infrared transition moments suggest that such analysis will be very valuable in characterizing the role of vibronic effects in ultrafast molecular dynamics.

Signatures of vibronic coupling in two-dimensional electronic-vibrational and vibrational-electronic spectroscopies

Two-Dimensional Electronic-Vibrational (2D EV) spectroscopy and Two-Dimensional Vibrational-Electronic (2D VE) spectroscopy are new coherent four-wave mixing spectroscopies that utilize both electronically resonant and vibrationally resonant field-matter interactions to elucidate couplings between electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom. A system Hamiltonian is developed here to lay a foundation for interpreting the 2D EV and 2D VE signals that arise from a vibronically coupled molecular system in the condensed phase. A molecular system consisting of one anharmonic vibration and two electronic states is modeled. Equilibrium displacement of the vibrational coordinate and vibrational frequency shifts upon excitation to the first electronic excited state are included in our Hamiltonian through linear and quadratic vibronic coupling terms. We explicitly consider the nuclear dependence of the electronic transition dipole moment and demonstrate that these spectroscopies are sensitive to non-Condon effects. A series of simulations of 2D EV and 2D VE spectra obtained by varying parameters of the system, system-bath, and interaction Hamiltonians demonstrate that one of the following conditions must be met to observe signals: (1) non-zero linear and/or quadratic vibronic coupling in the electronic excited state, (2) vibrational-coordinate dependence of the electronic transition dipole moment, or (3) electronic-state-dependent vibrational dephasing dynamics. We explore how these vibronic interactions are manifested in the positions, amplitudes, and line shapes of the peaks in 2D EV and 2D VE spectroscopies.

Recent advances in multidimensional ultrafast spectroscopy

Multidimensional ultrafast spectroscopies are one of the premier tools to investigate condensed phase dynamics of biological, chemical and functional nanomaterial systems. As they reach maturity, the variety of frequency domains that can be explored has vastly increased, with experimental techniques capable of correlating excitation and emission frequencies from the terahertz through to the ultraviolet. Some of the most recent innovations also include extreme cross-peak spectroscopies that directly correlate the dynamics of electronic and vibrational states. This review article summarizes the key technological advances that have permitted these recent advances, and the insights gained from new multidimensional spectroscopic probes.

Ultrafast structural molecular dynamics investigated with 2D infrared spectroscopy methods

Ultrafast, multi-dimensional infrared (IR) spectroscopy has been advanced in recent years to a versatile analytical tool with a broad range of applications to elucidate molecular structure on ultrafast timescales, and it can be used for samples in a many different environments. Following a short and general introduction on the benefits of 2D IR spectroscopy, the first part of this chapter contains a brief discussion on basic descriptions and conceptual considerations of 2D IR spectroscopy. Outstanding classical applications of 2D IR are used afterwards to highlight the strengths and basic applicability of the method. This includes the identification of vibrational coupling in molecules, characterization of spectral diffusion dynamics, chemical exchange of chemical bond formation and breaking, as well as dynamics of intra- and intermolecular energy transfer for molecules in bulk solution and thin films. In the second part, several important, recently developed variants and new applications of 2D IR spectroscopy are introduced. These methods focus on (i) applications to molecules under two- and three-dimensional confinement, (ii) the combination of 2D IR with electrochemistry, (iii) ultrafast 2D IR in conjunction with diffraction-limited microscopy, (iv) several variants of non-equilibrium 2D IR spectroscopy such as transient 2D IR and 3D IR, and (v) extensions of the pump and probe spectral regions for multi-dimensional vibrational spectroscopy towards mixed vibrational-electronic spectroscopies. In light of these examples, the important open scientific and conceptual questions with regard to intra- and intermolecular dynamics are highlighted. Such questions can be tackled with the existing arsenal of experimental variants of 2D IR spectroscopy to promote the understanding of fundamentally new aspects in chemistry, biology and materials science. The final part of the chapter introduces several concepts of currently performed technical developments, which aim at exploiting 2D IR spectroscopy as an analytical tool. Such developments embrace the combination of 2D IR spectroscopy and plasmonic spectroscopy for ultrasensitive analytics, merging 2D IR spectroscopy with ultra-high-resolution microscopy (nanoscopy), future variants of transient 2D IR methods, or 2D IR in conjunction with microfluidics. It is expected that these techniques will allow for groundbreaking research in many new areas of natural sciences.

Spin-Orbit Coupling Drives Femtosecond Nonadiabatic Dynamics in a Transition Metal Compound

Transient absorption measurements conducted using broadband, 6 fs laser pulses reveal unexpected femtosecond dynamics in the [IrBr₆]^2- model system. Vibrational spectra and the X-ray crystal structure indicate that these dynamics are not induced by a Jahn-Teller distortion, a type of conical intersection typically associated with the spectral features of transition metal compounds. Two-dimensional electronic spectra of [IrBr₆]^2- contain 23 cross peaks, which necessarily arise from spin-orbit coupling. Real-valued 2D spectra support a spectroscopic basis where strong nonadiabatic coupling, ascribed to multiple conical intersections, mediates rapid energy relaxation to the lowest-energy excited state. Subsequent analysis gives rise to a more generalized description of a conical intersection as a degeneracy between two adiabatic states having the same total angular momentum.

Observation of Electronic Excitation Transfer Through Light Harvesting Complex II Using Two-Dimensional Electronic-Vibrational Spectroscopy

Light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) serves a central role in light harvesting for oxygenic photosynthesis and is arguably the most important photosynthetic antenna complex. In this work, we present two-dimensional electronic-vibrational (2DEV) spectra of LHCII isolated from spinach, demonstrating the possibility of using this technique to track the transfer of electronic excitation energy between specific pigments within the complex. We assign the spectral bands via comparison with the 2DEV spectra of the isolated chromophores, chlorophyll a and b, and present evidence that excitation energy between the pigments of the complex are observed in these spectra. Finally, we analyze the essential components of the 2DEV spectra using singular value decomposition, which makes it possible to reveal the relaxation pathways within this complex.

Two-Dimensional Electronic-Vibrational Spectroscopy of Chlorophyll a and b

We present two-dimensional electronic-vibrational (2DEV) spectra of isolated chlorophyll a and b in deuterated ethanol. We excite the Q-band electronic transitions and measure the effects on the carbonyl and C ═ C double-bond stretch region of the infrared spectrum. With the aid of density functional theory calculations, we provide assignments for the major features of the spectrum. We show how the 2DEV spectra can be used to readily distinguish different solvation states of the chlorophyll, with features corresponding to the minority pentacoordinate magnesium (Mg) species being resolved along each dimension of the 2DEV spectra from the dominant hexacoordinate Mg species. These assignments represent a crucial first step toward the application of 2DEV spectroscopy to chlorophyll-containing pigment-protein complexes.
