Dynamics of asymmetric non-polymeric binary glass formers—A nuclear magnetic resonance and dielectric spectroscopy study

Reorientational dynamics in highly asymmetric binary low-molecular mixtures-A quantitative comparison of dielectric and NMR spectroscopy results

Previously, we scrutinized the dielectric spectra of a binary glass former made by a low-molecular high-T_g component 2-(m-tertbutylphenyl)-2'-tertbutyl-9,9'-spirobi[9H]fluorene (m-TPTS; T_g = 350 K) and low-T_g tripropyl phosphate (TPP; T_g = 134 K) [Körber et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 23, 7200 (2021)]. Here, we analyze nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and stimulated echo decays of deuterated m-TPTS-d₄ (²H) and TPP (³¹P) and attempt to understand the dielectric spectra in terms of component specific dynamics. The high-T_g component (α₁) shows relaxation similar to that of neat systems, yet with some broadening upon mixing. This correlates with high-frequency broadening of the dielectric spectra. The low-T_g component (α₂) exhibits highly stretched relaxations and strong dynamic heterogeneities indicated by "two-phase" spectra, reflecting varying fractions of fast and slow liquid-like reorienting molecules. Missing for the high-T_g component, such two-phase spectra are identified down to w_TPP = 0.04, indicating that isotropic reorientation prevails in the rigid high-T_g matrix stretching from close to T_g ^TPP to T_g1 w_TPP. This correlates with low-frequency broadening of the dielectric spectra. Two T_g values are defined: T_g1 (w_TPP) displays a plasticizer effect, whereas T_g2 (w_TPP) passes through a maximum, signaling extreme separation of the component dynamics at low w_TPP. We suggest understanding the latter counter-intuitive feature by referring to a crossover from "single glass" to "double glass" scenario revealed by recent MD simulations. Analyses reveal that a second population of TPP molecules exists, which is associated with the dynamics of the high-T_g component. However, the fractions are lower than suggested by the dielectric spectra. We discuss this discrepancy considering the role of collective dynamics probed by dielectric but not by NMR spectroscopy.

Reorientational dynamics of highly asymmetric binary non-polymeric mixtures – a dielectric spectroscopy study

Two separated relaxations α₁ and α₂ with different temperature dependences are identified in the mixtures. They are attributed to the dynamics associated with the high-T_g (α₁) and the low-T_g component (α₂) with distinct T_g concentration dependences.

Spatially and Temporally Resolved Heterogeneities in a Miscible Polymer Blend

Mapping the spatial and temporal heterogeneities in miscible polymer blends is critical for understanding and further improving their material properties. However, a complete picture on the heterogeneous dynamics is often obscured in ensemble measurements. Herein, the spatial and temporal heterogeneities in fully miscible polystyrene/oligostyrene blend films are investigated by monitoring the rotational diffusion of embedded individual probe molecules using defocused wide-field fluorescence microscopy. In the same blend film, three significantly different types of dynamical behaviors (referred to as modes) of the probe molecules can be observed at the same time, namely, immobile, continuously rotating, and intermittently rotating probe molecules. This reveals a prominent spatial heterogeneity in local dynamics at the nanometer scale. In addition to that, temporal heterogeneity is uncovered by the nonexponential characteristic of the rotational autocorrelation functions of single-molecule probes. Moreover, the occurrence probabilities of these different modes strongly depend on the polystyrene: oligostyrene ratios in the blend films. Remarkably, some probe molecules switch between the continuous and intermittent rotational modes at elevated temperature, indicating a possible alteration in local dynamics that is triggered by the dynamic heterogeneity in the blends. Although some of these findings can be discussed by the self-concentration model and the results provided by ensemble averaging techniques (e.g., dielectric spectroscopy), there are implications that go beyond current models of blend dynamics.

On the microscopic origins of relaxation processes in aqueous peptide solutions undergoing a glass transition

We combine broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) with ¹H and ²H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to study molecular dynamics in mixtures of ε-polylysine with H₂O or D₂O. In BDS, four relaxation processes can be attributed to molecular dynamics. While the fastest process P1 obeys the Arrhenius law, the slowest process P4 shows prominent non-Arrhenius behavior typical of structural α relaxation. For the intermediate processes P2 and P3, the temperature dependence changes at the glass transition temperature T_g. The ¹H and ²H NMR results yield insights into the molecular origins of these relaxation phenomena. In these NMR analyses, we exploit, in addition to the isotope selectivity of the method, the possibility to distinguish between various types of motion based on their respective line-shape effects and the capability to single out specific molecular moieties based on different spin-lattice relaxation behaviors. In this way, we reveal that process P1 results from the rotation of side and end groups of the peptide, while process P2 is caused by a reorientation of essentially all water molecules, which are quasi-isotropic and survive well below T_g. As for the peptide backbone dynamics, we find evidence that rotational motion of polar groups is involved in process P3 and that nonpolar regions show a dynamical process, which is located between P3 and P4. Thus, the NMR analyses do not yield evidence for coexisting fast peptide-decoupled and slow peptide-coupled water species, which contribute to BDS processes P2 and P3, respectively, but minor bimodality of water motion may remain undetected. Finally, it is demonstrated that the proton/deuteron exchange needs to be considered when interpreting experimental results for molecular dynamics in aqueous peptide solutions.

Main and secondary relaxations of non-polymeric high-Tg glass formers as revealed by dielectric spectroscopy

A series of high-Tg glass formers with Tg values varying between 347 and 390 K and molar masses in the range of 341 and 504 g mol-1 are investigated by dielectric spectroscopy. They are compared to paradigmatic reference systems. Differently polar side groups are attached to a rigid non-polar core unit at different positions. Thereby, the dielectric relaxation strength varies over more than two decades. All the relaxation features typical of molecular glass formers are rediscovered, i.e. stretching of the main (α-) relaxation, a more or less pronounced secondary (β-) process, and a fragility index quite similar to that of other molecular systems. The position of the polar nitrile side group influences the manifestation of the β-relaxation. The α-relaxation stretching displays the trend to become less with higher relaxation strength Δεα, confirming recent reports. Typical for a generic β-process is the increase of its amplitude above Tg, which is found to follow a power-law behaviour as a function of the ratio τα/τβ with a universal exponent; yet, its relative amplitude to that of the α-relaxation varies as does the temporal separation of both processes. The mean activation energy of the β-process as well as the width of the energy distribution gβ(E) increases more or less systematically with Tg. The latter is determined from the dielectric spectra subjected to a scaling procedure assuming a thermally activated process. Plotting gβ(E) as a function of the reduced energy scale E/Tg, the distributions are centred between 19-35 and their widths differ by a factor 2-3.

Dynamically asymmetric binary glass formers studied by dielectric and NMR spectroscopy

We investigate the component dynamics in asymmetric binary glass formers. Focusing on the dielectric spectra of the high-T_g components m-tricresyl phosphate and quinaldine mixed with toluene as low-T_g component, the broadend spectra cannot be described by Kohlrausch or Cole-Davidson (CD) functions. Instead, we apply a generalized CD function which allows to control the width of the susceptibility independently of its high-frequency flank. The spectra show a common broadening and failure of the frequency-temperature superposition with increasing toluene concentration. This is confirmed by stimulated echo experiments showing an increased stretching of the probed orientational correlation function. In analogy to the definition of T_g, we consider "isodynamic points". For each component, a different but linear concentration dependence of 1/T_iso is revealed, indicating different time scales. Qualitativly, we do not find significant differences for the present mixtures with T_g-contrasts of 63-89K compared to those with larger T_g-contrast ( [Formula: see text] K): Whereas the high-T_g component shows relaxation features similar to those of neat glass formers, yet, with "atypical" weak relaxation broadening, the faster low-T_g component displays pronounced dynamic heterogeneities. This is supported by scrutinizing NMR relaxation data of several mixtures investigated previously as a function of concentration. A universal evolution of the dynamics of the high-T_g as well as the low-T_g component is suggested for mixtures with high [Formula: see text]T_g .

Coexistence of two structural relaxation processes in monohydroxy alcohol-alkyl halogen mixtures: Dielectric and rheological studies

Evidence for the existence of two glass transitions is found in binary mixtures of monohydroxy alcohols with an aprotic alkyl halide by means of dielectric spectroscopy and, markedly, also shear rheology. In the mechanical data, an enormous separation of two components becomes obvious for suitable compositions. The observation of bimodal motional heterogeneity is possible despite the fact that the glass transition temperatures of these substances differ by only 40 K. Obviously, the hydrogen-bond driven formation of supramolecular structures in one of the mixture components facilitates the emergence of dynamic contrast which for other binary liquids was so far only observed in the presence of much larger glass transition temperature differences.

Dielectric relaxation of polymers: segmental dynamics under structural constraints

In this article we review the recent polymer literature where dielectric spectroscopy has been used to investigate the segmental dynamics of polymers under the constraints produced by self-structuring. Specifically, we consider three cases: (i) semicrystalline polymers, (ii) segregated block-copolymers, and (iii) asymmetric miscible polymer blends. In these three situations the characteristics of the dielectric relaxation associated with the polymer segmental dynamics are markedly affected by the constraints imposed by the corresponding structural features. After reviewing in detail each of the polymer systems, the most common aspects are discussed in the context of the use of dielectric relaxation as a sensitive tool for analyzing structural features in nanostructured polymer systems.
