Abstract
Nonadiabatic effects are ubiquitous in photophysics and photochemistry, and therefore, many theoretical developments have been made to properly describe them. Conical intersections are central in nonadiabatic processes, as they promote efficient and ultrafast nonadiabatic transitions between electronic states. A proper theoretical description requires developments in electronic structure and specifically in methods that describe conical intersections between states and nonadiabatic coupling terms. This review focuses on the electronic structure aspects of nonadiabatic processes. We discuss the requirements of electronic structure methods to describe conical intersections and nonadiabatic couplings, how the most common excited state methods perform in describing these effects, and what the recent developments are in expanding the methodology and implementing nonadiabatic couplings.

Abstract
A new adaptive algorithm for penalty function optimization for minimum-energy three-states conical intersections (ME3CI) is suggested. The new algorithm differs from the original penalty function algorithm by (a) removing the redundancy in the target function, (b) using an adaptive increment for the penalty function weighting factor, and (c) using tighter convergence criteria for the energy gap. The latter was introduced to guarantee convergence to a true conical intersection rather than to a narrowly avoided crossing geometry. The new algorithm was tested in the optimization of the ME3CI geometries in butadiene and malonaldehyde, where all of the previously found true ME3CI geometries were recovered. The previously found butadiene's CI3/2/1 turned out to be a narrowly avoided crossing. For butadiene, seven new ME3CI geometries have been located. Because of the removal of the redundancy and the use of the adaptive weighting factor, the convergence rate of the new algorithm is noticeably improved as compared to that of the previously proposed penalty function algorithm. The application to malonaldehyde and butadiene demonstrates that the three-state conical intersections may be more abundant and hence more involved in the photochemistry than previously thought. The recently developed mixed-reference spin flip (MRSF)-TDDFT method yields ME3CI geometries and relative energies quantitatively consistent with the previously reported calculations at a much reduced computational cost.

Abstract
Nonradiative relaxation of excited molecules is central to many crucial issues in photochemistry. Condensed phases are typical contexts in which such problems are considered, and the nonradiative relaxation dynamics are expected to be significantly affected by interactions with the environment, for example, a solvent. We developed a nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulation technique that can treat the nonradiative relaxation and explicitly include the environment in the calculations without a heavy computational burden. Specifically, we combined trajectory surface hopping with Tully's fewest-switches algorithm, a tight-binding approximated version of spin-flip time-dependent density-functional theory, and divide-and-conquer (DC) spatial fragmentation scheme. Numerical results showed that this method can treat systems with thousands of atoms within reasonable computational resources, and the error arising from DC fragmentation is negligibly small. Using this method, we obtained molecular insights into the solvent dependence of the photoexcited-state dynamics of trans-azobenzene, which demonstrate the importance of the environment for condensed-phase nonradiative relaxation.

Abstract
Due to their multiconfigurational nature featuring strong electron correlation, accurate description of diradicals and diradicaloids is a challenge for quantum chemical methods. The recently developed mixed-reference spin-flip (MRSF)-TDDFT method is capable of describing the multiconfigurational electronic states of these systems while avoiding the spin-contamination pitfalls of SF-TDDFT. Here, we apply MRSF-TDDFT to study the adiabatic singlet-triplet (ST) gaps in a series of well-known diradicals and diradicaloids. On average, MRSF displays a very high prediction accuracy of the adiabatic ST gaps with the mean absolute error (MAE) amounting to 0.14 eV. In addition, MRSF is capable of accurately describing the effect of the Jahn-Teller distortion occurring in the trimethylenemethane diradical, the violation of the Hund rule in a series of the didehydrotoluene diradicals, and the potential energy surfaces of the didehydrobenzene (benzyne) diradicals. A convenient criterion for distinguishing diradicals and diradicaloids is suggested on the basis of the easily obtainable quantities. In all of these cases, which are difficult for the conventional methods of density functional theory (DFT), MRSF shows results consistent with the experiment and the high-level ab initio computations. Hence, the present study documents the reliability and accuracy of MRSF and lays out the guidelines for its application to strongly correlated molecular systems.

Abstract
Nonadiabatic dynamics around conical intersections between ground and excited states are crucial to understand excited-state phenomena in complex chemical systems. With this background in mind, we present an approach combining fewest-switches trajectory surface hopping and spin-flip (SF) time-dependent (TD) density-functional tight binding (DFTB), which is a simplified version of SF-TD density functional theory (DFT) with semiempirical parametrizations, for computationally efficient nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. The estimated computational time of the SF-TD-DFTB approach is several orders of magnitude lower than that of SF-TD-DFT. In addition, the proposed method reproduces the time scales and quantum yields in photoisomerization reactions of azobenzene at a level comparable with conventional ab initio approaches, demonstrating reasonable accuracy. Finally, we report a practical application of the developed technique to explore the nonradiative relaxation processes of tetraphenylethylene and its derivative with torsionally locked aromatic rings and discuss the effect of locking the rings on the excited-state lifetime.

Abstract
![]()
Computational spectroscopy is becoming a mandatory tool for the interpretation of the
complex, and often congested, spectral maps delivered by modern non-linear multi-pulse
techniques. The fields of Electronic Structure Methods,
Non-Adiabatic Molecular Dynamics, and Theoretical
Spectroscopy represent the three pillars of the virtual ultrafast
optical spectrometer, able to deliver transient spectra in
silico from first principles. A successful simulation strategy requires a
synergistic approach that balances between the three fields, each one having its very
own challenges and bottlenecks. The aim of this Perspective is to demonstrate that,
despite these challenges, an impressive agreement between theory and experiment is
achievable now regarding the modeling of ultrafast photoinduced processes in complex
molecular architectures. Beyond that, some key recent developments in the three fields
are presented that we believe will have major impacts on spectroscopic simulations in
the very near future. Potential directions of development, pending challenges, and
rising opportunities are illustrated.

Abstract
We present an approximate treatment of spin-extended coupled-cluster (ECC) based on the spin-projection of the broken-symmetry coupled-cluster (CC) ansatz. ECC completely eliminates the spin-contamination of unrestricted CC and is therefore expected to provide better descriptions of dynamical and static correlation effects, but introduces two distinct problems. The first issue is the emergence of non-terminating amplitude equations, which are caused by the de-excitation effects inherent in symmetry projection operators. In this study, we take a minimalist approach and truncate the Taylor series of the exponential ansatz at a certain order such that the approximation safely recovers the traditional CC without spin-projection. The second issue is that the nonlinear equations of ECC become underdetermined, although consistent, yielding an infinitude of solutions. This problem arises because of the redundancies in the excitation manifold, as is common in other multi-reference approaches. We remove the linear dependencies in ECC by employing an orthogonal projection manifold. We also propose an efficient solver for our method, in which the components are usually sparse but not diagonal-dominant. It is shown that our approach is rigorously orbital-invariant and provides more accurate results than its configuration interaction and linearized CC analogues for chemical systems.
