Generation of Isolated Subfemtosecond Electron Bunches by the Diffraction of a Polarization-Tailored Intense Laser Beam

We propose utilizing a polarization-tailored high-power laser pulse to extract and accelerate electrons from the edge of a solid foil target to produce isolated subfemtosecond electron bunches. The laser pulse consists of two orthogonally polarized components with a time delay comparable to the pulse duration, such that the polarization in the middle of the pulse rapidly rotates over 90° within few optical cycles. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that when such a light pulse diffracts at the edge of a plasma foil, a series of isolated relativistic electron bunches are emitted into separated azimuthal angles determined by the varying polarization. In comparison with most other methods that require an ultrashort drive laser, we show the proposed scheme works well with typical multicycle (∼30  fs) pulses from high-power laser facilities. The generated electron bunches have typical durations of a few hundred attoseconds and charges of tens of picocoulombs.

Progress and Prospects in Optical Ultrafast Microscopy in the Visible Spectral Region: Transient Absorption and Two-Dimensional Microscopy

Ultrafast optical microscopy, generally employed by incorporating ultrafast laser pulses into microscopes, can provide spatially resolved mechanistic insight into scientific problems ranging from hot carrier dynamics to biological imaging. This Review discusses the progress in different ultrafast microscopy techniques, with a focus on transient absorption and two-dimensional microscopy. We review the underlying principles of these techniques and discuss their respective advantages and applicability to different scientific questions. We also examine in detail how instrument parameters such as sensitivity, laser power, and temporal and spatial resolution must be addressed. Finally, we comment on future developments and emerging opportunities in the field of ultrafast microscopy.

Element- and enantiomer-selective visualization of molecular motion in real-time

Ultrafast optical-domain spectroscopies allow to monitor in real time the motion of nuclei in molecules. Achieving element-selectivity had to await the advent of time resolved X-ray spectroscopy, which is now commonly carried at X-ray free electron lasers. However, detecting light element that are commonly encountered in organic molecules, remained elusive due to the need to work under vacuum. Here, we present an impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS) pump/carbon K-edge absorption probe investigation, which allowed observation of the low-frequency vibrational modes involving specific selected carbon atoms in the Ibuprofen RS dimer. Remarkably, by controlling the probe light polarization we can preferentially access the enantiomer of the dimer to which the carbon atoms belong.

Enhancement of lattice dynamics by an azimuthal surface plasmon on the femtosecond time scale in multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Plasmon-enhanced light-matter interactions have been widely investigated in the past decades. Here, we report surface plasmon-enhanced structural dynamics in multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The optical polarization dependent dynamic properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes are investigated using ultrafast transmission electron microscopy. Lattice contractions in the femtosecond time regime are observed upon excitation of the azimuthal plasmon by light polarized perpendicular to the tubular axis. The polarization dependence of the plasmon near field was examined using photon-induced near-field electron microscopy. The lattice changes resulting from the azimuthal plasmon enhance ultrafast alterations in both localized evanescent fields and the collective charge excitation, which play critical roles governing the light-matter interaction. These results suggest that the ultrafast responses of lattice degrees of freedom in nanomaterials could be essential for understanding the mechanism of surface plasmon enhanced effects.

Nanoscale Visualization of a Photoinduced Plasmonic Near-Field in a Single Nanowire by Free Electrons

Swift electrons can undergo inelastic interactions not only with electrons but also with near-fields, which may result in an energy loss or gain. Developments in photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM) enable direct imaging of the plasmon near-field distribution with nanometer resolution. Here, we report an analysis of the surface plasmonic near-field structure based on PINEM observations of silver nanowires. Single-photon order-selected electron images revealed the wavelike and banded structure of electric equipotential regions for a confined near-field integral associated with typical absorption of photon quanta (nℏω). Multimodal plasmon oscillations and second-harmonic generation were simultaneously observed, and the polarization dependence of plasmon wavelength and symmetry properties were analyzed. Based on advanced imaging techniques, our work has implications for future studies of the localized-field structures at interfaces and visualization of novel phenomena in nanostructures, nanosensors, and plasmonic devices.

Nearfield excited state imaging of bonding and antibonding plasmon modes in nanorod dimers via stimulated electron energy gain spectroscopy

Stimulated electron energy loss and gain spectroscopy (sEELS and sEEGS) are used to image the nearfield of the bonding and antibonding localized surface plasmon resonance modes in nanorod dimers. A scanning transmission electron microscope equipped with an optical delivery system is used to simultaneously irradiate plasmonic nanorod dimers while electron energy loss and gain spectra of the active plasmons are collected. The length of the nanorod dimer is varied such that the bonding and antibonding modes are resonant with the laser energy. The optically bright bonding mode is clearly observed in the resonant sEEG spectrum images and, consistent with spontaneous EELS, no direct evidence of the hot spot is observed in sEEG. s-polarized irradiation does not stimulate the energy gain of the optically dark antibonding mode. However, when phase retardation is introduced by tilting the longitudinal axis, the otherwise dark antibonding mode becomes sEEG active.

Near field excited state imaging via stimulated electron energy gain spectroscopy of localized surface plasmon resonances in plasmonic nanorod antennas

Continuous wave (cw) photon stimulated electron energy loss and gain spectroscopy (sEELS and sEEGS) is used to image the near field of optically stimulated localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes in nanorod antennas. An optical delivery system equipped with a nanomanipulator and a fiber-coupled laser diode is used to simultaneously irradiate plasmonic nanostructures in a (scanning) transmission electron microscope. The nanorod length is varied such that the m = 1, 2, and 3 LSPR modes are resonant with the laser energy and the optically stimulated near field spectra and images of these modes are measured. Various nanorod orientations are also investigated to explore retardation effects. Optical and electron beam simulations are used to rationalize the observed patterns. As expected, the odd modes are optically bright and result in observed sEEG responses. The m = 2 dark mode does not produce a sEEG response, however, when tilted such that retardation effects are operative, the sEEG signal emerges. Thus, we demonstrate that cw sEEGS is an effective tool in imaging the near field of the full set of nanorod plasmon modes of either parity.

Multi-octave, CEP-stable source for high-energy field synthesis

The development of high-energy, high-power, multi-octave light transients is currently the subject of intense research driven by emerging applications in attosecond spectroscopy and coherent control. We report on a phase-stable, multi-octave source based on a Yb:YAG amplifier for light transient generation. We demonstrate the amplification of a two-octave spectrum to 25 μJ of energy in two broadband amplification channels and their temporal compression to 6 and 18 fs at 1 and 2 μm, respectively. In this scheme, due to the intrinsic temporal synchronization between the pump and seed pulses, the temporal jitter is restricted to long-term drift. We show that the intrinsic stability of the synthesizer allows subcycle detection of an electric field at 0.15 PHz. The complex electric field of the 0.15-PHz pulses and their free induction decay after interaction with water molecules are resolved by electro-optic sampling over 2 ps. The scheme is scalable in peak and average power.

Ultrafast Dynamic Microscopy of Carrier and Exciton Transport

We highlight the recent progress in ultrafast dynamic microscopy that combines ultrafast optical spectroscopy with microscopy approaches, focusing on the application transient absorption microscopy (TAM) to directly image energy and charge transport in solar energy harvesting and conversion systems. We discuss the principles, instrumentation, and resolutions of TAM. The simultaneous spatial, temporal, and excited-state-specific resolutions of TAM unraveled exciton and charge transport mechanisms that were previously obscured in conventional ultrafast spectroscopy measurements for systems such as organic solar cells, hybrid perovskite thin films, and molecular aggregates. We also discuss future directions to improve resolutions and to develop other ultrafast imaging contrasts beyond transient absorption.

Quantum Effects In Imaging Nano-Structures Using Photon-Induced Near-Field Electron Microscopy

In this paper, we introduce the quantum mechanical approach as a more physically-realistic model to accurately quantify the electron-photon interaction in Photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM). Further, we compare the maximum coupling speed between the electrons and the photons in the quantum and classical regime. For a nanosphere of radius 2.13 nm, full quantum calculations show that the maximum coupling between photon and electron occurs at a slower speed than classical calculations report. In addition, a significant reduction in PINEM field intensity is observed for the full quantum model. Furthermore, we discuss the size limitation for particles imaged using the PIMEN technique and the role of the background material in improving the PINEM intensity. We further report a significant reduction in PINEM intensity in nearly touching plasmonic particles (0.3 nm gap) due to tunneling effect.

Investigation of laser-induced inter-welding between Au and Ag nanoparticles and the plasmonic properties of welded dimers

Noble metallic nanoparticles with unique plasmonic properties are useful in a variety of applications including bio-imaging, sensing, cancer therapy, etc. The properties of metallic nanoparticles can be tuned in multiple ways, among which laser welding is a highly efficient method. In this study, laser-induced inter-welding of Ag-Au nanoparticle (NP) dimers was investigated using in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). For the first time, the welding process was directly visualized. The structural and compositional evolution of Ag-Au dimers was studied in detail, and several typical nanostructures formed during the welding process, including two types of core-shell structures, were discovered. Based on these observations, we proposed a complete mechanism explaining how welding proceeds under the influence of a laser. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations demonstrated that the plasmonic properties of welded Ag-Au dimers were different from those of pure Au-Au or Ag-Ag dimers and can be tuned by forming shells, alloying or changing the size ratio of Ag and Au NPs.

Exploring Photothermal Pathways via in Situ Laser Heating in the Transmission Electron Microscope: Recrystallization, Grain Growth, Phase Separation, and Dewetting in Ag0.5Ni0.5 Thin Films

A new optical delivery system has been developed for the (scanning) transmission electron microscope. Here we describe the in situ and "rapid ex situ" photothermal heating modality of the system, which delivers >200 mW of optical power from a fiber-coupled laser diode to a 3.7 μm radius spot on the sample. Selected thermal pathways can be accessed via judicious choices of the laser power, pulse width, number of pulses, and radial position. The long optical working distance mitigates any charging artifacts and tremendous thermal stability is observed in both pulsed and continuous wave conditions, notably, no drift correction is applied in any experiment. To demonstrate the optical delivery system's capability, we explore the recrystallization, grain growth, phase separation, and solid state dewetting of a Ag0.5Ni0.5 film. Finally, we demonstrate that the structural and chemical aspects of the resulting dewetted films was assessed.

Perspective: Opportunities for ultrafast science at SwissFEL

We present the main specifications of the newly constructed Swiss Free Electron Laser, SwissFEL, and explore its potential impact on ultrafast science. In light of recent achievements at current X-ray free electron lasers, we discuss the potential territory for new scientific breakthroughs offered by SwissFEL in Chemistry, Biology, and Materials Science, as well as nonlinear X-ray science.

Perspective: THz-driven nuclear dynamics from solids to molecules

Recent years have seen dramatic developments in the technology of intense pulsed light sources in the THz frequency range. Since many dipole-active excitations in solids and molecules also lie in this range, there is now a tremendous potential to use these light sources to study linear and nonlinear dynamics in such systems. While several experimental investigations of THz-driven dynamics in solid-state systems have demonstrated a variety of interesting linear and nonlinear phenomena, comparatively few efforts have been made to drive analogous dynamics in molecular systems. In the present Perspective article, we discuss the similarities and differences between THz-driven dynamics in solid-state and molecular systems on both conceptual and practical levels. We also discuss the experimental parameters needed for these types of experiments and thereby provide design criteria for a further development of this new research branch. Finally, we present a few recent examples to illustrate the rich physics that may be learned from nonlinear THz excitations of phonons in solids as well as inter-molecular vibrations in liquid and gas-phase systems.

From structure to structural dynamics: Ahmed Zewail's legacy

In this brief tribute to Ahmed Zewail, we highlight and place in the historical context, several of the major achievements that he and his colleagues have made in Femtochemistry (of which he was the principal instigator) and his introduction of ultrafast electron scattering, diffraction, microscopy and spectroscopy. By achieving a sub-picosecond temporal resolution, coupled with a picometer spatial resolution, he revolutionised our understanding of the corpus of chemical, physical, biological and materials science systems.

Spatiotemporal Observation of Electron-Impact Dynamics in Photovoltaic Materials Using 4D Electron Microscopy

Understanding light-triggered charge carrier dynamics near photovoltaic-material surfaces and at interfaces has been a key element and one of the major challenges for the development of real-world energy devices. Visualization of such dynamics information can be obtained using the one-of-a-kind methodology of scanning ultrafast electron microscopy (S-UEM). Here, we address the fundamental issue of how the thickness of the absorber layer may significantly affect the charge carrier dynamics on material surfaces. Time-resolved snapshots indicate that the dynamics of charge carriers generated by electron impact in the electron-photon dynamical probing regime is highly sensitive to the thickness of the absorber layer, as demonstrated using CdSe films of different thicknesses as a model system. This finding not only provides the foundation for potential applications of S-UEM to a wide range of devices in the fields of chemical and materials research, but also has impact on the use and interpretation of electron beam-induced current for optimization of photoactive materials in these devices.

Attosecond Dynamics of Molecular Electronic Ring Currents

Ultrafast charge migration is of fundamental importance to photoinduced chemical reactions. However, exploring such a quantum dynamical process requires demanding spatial and temporal resolutions. We show how electronic coherence dynamics induced in molecules by a circularly polarized UV pulse can be tracked by using a time-delayed circularly polarized attosecond X-ray pulse. The X-ray probe spectra retrieve an image at different time delays, encoding instantaneous pump-induced circular charge migration information on an attosecond time scale. A time-dependent ultrafast electronic coherence associated with the periodical circular ring currents shows a strong dependence on the helicity of the UV pulse, which may provide a direct approach to access and control the electronic quantum coherence dynamics in photophysical and photochemical reactions in real time.

New instrumentation and cutting edge research

Stimulated by Ondrej Krivanek's contributions, the complex interaction between research and innovations in the instrumentation for electron microscopy is discussed. Specific attention is given to aberration correction and to spectroscopy in both the valence region and at the energies of localised phonons or bond vibrations. Current thinking about projection imaging and dielectric excitation theory may be challenged. More significantly in the new fields of investigation opened up to them, electron microscopists will need to build closer relations, particularly with the photonics and scanning tunnelling microscopy communities. Further improvements in instrumentation could usefully be directed towards imaging and spectroscopy at higher scattering angles as well as the incorporation of other facilities such as photon stimulation and secondary electron imaging.

Four-Dimensional Ultrafast Electron Microscopy: Insights into an Emerging Technique

Four-dimensional ultrafast electron microscopy (4D-UEM) is a novel analytical technique that aims to fulfill the long-held dream of researchers to investigate materials at extremely short spatial and temporal resolutions by integrating the excellent spatial resolution of electron microscopes with the temporal resolution of ultrafast femtosecond laser-based spectroscopy. The ingenious use of pulsed photoelectrons to probe surfaces and volumes of materials enables time-resolved snapshots of the dynamics to be captured in a way hitherto impossible by other conventional techniques. The flexibility of 4D-UEM lies in the fact that it can be used in both the scanning (S-UEM) and transmission (UEM) modes depending upon the type of electron microscope involved. While UEM can be employed to monitor elementary structural changes and phase transitions in samples using real-space mapping, diffraction, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and tomography, S-UEM is well suited to map ultrafast dynamical events on materials surfaces in space and time. This review provides an overview of the unique features that distinguish these techniques and also illustrates the applications of both S-UEM and UEM to a multitude of problems relevant to materials science and chemistry.

Near-PHz-bandwidth, phase-stable continua generated from a Yb:YAG thin-disk amplifier

We report on the generation of a multi-octave, phase-stable continuum from the output of a Yb:YAG regenerative amplifier delivering 1-ps pulses with randomly varying carrier-envelope phase (CEP). The intrinsically CEP-stable spectral continuum spans from 450 nm to beyond 2500 nm, covering a spectral range of about 0.6 PHz. The generated coherent broadband light carries an energy of 4 μJ, which can be scaled to higher values if required. The system has been designed and is ideally suited for seeding broadband parametric amplifiers and multichannel synthesizers pumped by picosecond Yb:YAG amplifiers, obviating the need for active timing synchronization required in previous approaches. The presented concept paves the way to cost-effective, reliable all-Yb:YAG single-cycle sources with terawatt peak-power and tens-of-Watts average power.
