Communication: Hydrogen bonding interactions in water-alcohol mixtures from X-ray absorption spectroscopy

New Aspects of Alcohol-Alcohol and Alcohol-Water Interactions: Crystallographic and Quantum Chemical Studies of Antiparallel O-H/O-H Interactions

New modes of interaction, antiparallel O-H/O-H interactions of alcohol-alcohol dimers and alcohol-water dimers, were studied by analyzing data in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and by calculating potential energy surfaces at a very accurate quantum chemical CCSD(T)/CBS level. The data reveal the existence of antiparallel interactions in crystal structures and significant interaction energies. Data from the CSD for alcohol-alcohol dimers show 49.2% of contacts with classical hydrogen bonds and 10.1% of contacts with antiparallel interactions, while for alcohol-water dimers, 59.4% of contacts are classical hydrogen bonds and only 0.6% of contacts are antiparallel interactions. The calculations were performed on methanol, ethanol, and n-propanol dimers. Classical hydrogen-bonded alcohol-alcohol and alcohol-water dimers have interaction energies of up to -6.2 kcal/mol and up to -5.5 kcal/mol, respectively. Antiparallel interactions in alcohol-alcohol and alcohol-water dimers have interaction energies of up to -4.7 kcal/mol and up to -4.4 kcal/mol, respectively. Symmetry-adapted perturbation theory analysis for antiparallel interactions shows their electrostatic nature.

Roles of hydrogen bonding interactions and hydrophobic effects on enhanced water structure in aqueous solutions of amphiphilic organic molecules

Insights into the solute-induced water structural transformations are essential to understand the role of water in biological and chemical reaction processes. Herein, the structural changes in water induced by amphiphilic organic molecules were investigated using concentration-dependent derivative Raman spectroscopy (DRS) combined with two-dimensional Raman correlation spectroscopy (2D Raman-COS). We shall restrict our attention in this work to binary mixtures of water with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), acetone, and isopropanol (IPA), all of which have similar chemical structures. The spectral changes in O:H and OH stretching modes illustrate that the solute molecules induce an enhancement of the water structure in dilute solutions, where the enhanced degree of water structure is closely related to the size of the dipole moment of organic molecules. In addition, the transformations of solute-induced water-specific structures were evaluated by 2D Raman-COS, which shows that the strong hydrogen bond (H-bond) structure of water is more sensitive to organic molecules and induces a transition to the weak H-bond structure of water.

Carbon K-edge x-ray absorption spectra of liquid alcohols from quantum chemical calculations of liquid structures obtained by molecular dynamics simulations

For reproducing the carbon K-edge x-ray absorption spectra of liquid alcohols, inner-shell quantum chemical calculations based on the Hartree-Fock method were performed with the snapshots of the liquid structures obtained by molecular dynamics simulations. The C K-edge inner-shell spectrum of liquid ethanol (EtOH) was obtained by the summation of one thousand calculated spectra of EtOH molecules including neighbor EtOH molecules within the CH₂-CH₂ distance of 6 Å. For the C K-edge inner-shell spectrum of liquid methanol (MeOH), we have calculated one thousand spectra of MeOH molecules including neighbor MeOH molecules within the CH₃-CH₃ distance of 6 Å. The calculated C K-edge inner-shell spectra of liquid alcohols well reproduced the spectral shapes of the experimentally obtained x-ray absorption spectra and the spectral changes from gas to liquid phases.

Pairing of Aqueous and Nonaqueous Electrosynthetic Reactions Enabled by a Redox Reservoir Electrode

Paired electrolysis methods are appealing for chemical synthesis because they generate valuable products at both electrodes; however, development of such reactions is complicated by the need for both half-reactions to proceed under mutually compatible conditions. Here, a modular electrochemical synthesis (ModES) strategy bypasses these constraints using a "redox reservoir" (RR) to pair electrochemical half-reactions across aqueous and nonaqueous solvents. Electrochemical oxidation reactions in organic solvents, the conversion of 4-t-butyltoluene to benzylic dimethyl acetal and aldehyde in methanol or the oxidative C-H amination of naphthalene in acetonitrile, and the reduction of oxygen to hydrogen peroxide in water were paired using nickel hexacyanoferrate as an RR that can selectively store and release protons (and electrons) while serving as the counter electrode for these reactions. Selective proton transport through the RR is optimized and confirmed to enable the ion balance, and thus the successful pairing, between redox half-reactions that proceed with different rates, on different scales, and in different solvents (methanol, acetonitrile, and water).

An atomistic explanation of the ethanol-water azeotrope

Ethanol and water form an azeotropic mixture at an ethanol molecular percentage of ∼91% (∼96% by volume), which prohibits ethanol from being further purified via distillation. Aqueous solutions at different concentrations in ethanol have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. We performed cylindrical micro-jet photoelectron spectroscopy, excited by synchrotron radiation, 70 eV above C1s ionization threshold, providing optimal atomic-scale surface-probing. Large model systems have been employed to simulate, by molecular dynamics, slabs of the aqueous solutions and obtain an atomistic description of both bulk and surface regions. We show how the azeotropic behaviour results from an unexpected concentration-dependence of the surface composition. While ethanol strongly dominates the surface and water is almost completely depleted from the surface for most mixing ratios, the different intermolecular bonding patterns of the two components cause water to penetrate to the surface region at high ethanol concentrations. The addition of surface water increases its relative vapour pressure, giving rise to the azeotropic behaviour.

Dipolar Dispersion Forces in Water-Methanol Mixtures: Enhancement of Water Interactions upon Dilution Drives Self-Association

Mixtures of short-chain alcohols and water produce anomalous thermodynamic and structural quantities, including molecular segregation into water-rich and alcohol-rich components. Herein, we used molecular dynamics simulations with polarizable models to investigate interactions that could drive the self-association of water molecules in mixtures with methanol (MeOH). As water was diluted with MeOH, significant changes in the distribution of molecules and solvation properties occurred, where water exhibited a clear preference for self-association. When common structural quantities were analyzed, it was found that there was a clear reduction in water-water hydrogen bonding and tetrahedral order (both in terms of typical bulk behavior), contrary to the observed water self-association. However, when dipolar dispersion forces between all molecules as a function of system composition were analyzed, it was found that water-water dipolar interactions became significantly stronger with dilution (6-fold stronger interaction in 75% MeOH compared to 0% MeOH). This was only observed for water, where MeOH-MeOH interactions became weaker as the systems were more dilute in MeOH. These forces result from specific dipole orientations, likely occurring to adopt lower energy configurations (i.e., head-to-tail or antiparallel). For water, this may result from lost other interactions (e.g., hydrogen bonding), leading to more rotational freedom between the dipole moments. These intriguing changes in dipolar interactions, which directly result from structural changes, can therefore explain, in part, the driving force for water self-association in MeOH-water mixtures.

Non-monotonic composition dependence of the breakdown of Stokes-Einstein relation for water in aqueous solutions of ethanol and 1-propanol: explanation using translational jump-diffusion approach

A series of experimental and simulation studies examined the validity of the Stokes-Einstein relationship (SER) of water in binary water/alcohol mixtures of different mixture compositions. These studies revealed a strong non-monotonic composition dependence of the SER with maxima at the specific alcohol mole fraction where the non-idealities of the thermodynamic and transport properties are observed. The translational jump-diffusion (TJD) approach elucidated the breakdown of the SER in pure supercooled water as caused by the jump translation of molecules. The breakdown of SER in the supercooled water/methanol binary mixture was successfully explained using the same TJD approach. To further generalize the picture, here we focus on the non-monotonic composition dependence of SER breakdown of water in two water/alcohol mixtures (water/ethanol and water/propanol) for a broad temperature range. In agreement with previous studies, maximum breakdown of SER is observed for the mixture with alcohol mole fraction x = 0.2. Diffusion of the water molecules at the maximum SER breakdown point is largely contributed by jump-diffusion. The residual-diffusion, obtained by subtracting the jump-diffusion from the total diffusion, approximately follows the SER for different compositions and temperatures. We also performed hydrogen (H-)bond dynamics and observed that the contribution of jump-diffusion is proportional to the total free energy of activation of breaking all H-bonds that exist around a molecule. This study, therefore, suggests that the more a molecule is trapped by H-bonding, the more likely it is to diffuse through the jump-diffusion mechanism, eventually leading to an increasing degree of SER breakdown.

Hydrophobic Cluster Formation in Aqueous Ethanol Solutions Probed by Soft X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Hydrophobic cluster structures in aqueous ethanol solutions at different concentrations have been investigated by soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). In the O K-edge XAS, we have found that hydrogen bond structures among water molecules are enhanced in the middle-concentration region by the hydrophobic interaction of the ethyl groups in ethanol. In the C K-edge XAS, the lower energy features arise from a transition from the terminal methyl C 1s electron to an unoccupied orbital of 3s Rydberg character, which is sensitive to the nearest-neighbor intermolecular interactions. From the comparison of C K-edge XAS with the inner-shell calculations, we have found that ethanol clusters are easily formed in the middle-concentration region due to the hydrophobic interaction of the ethyl group in ethanol, resulting in the enhancement of the hydrogen bond structures among water molecules. This behavior is different from aqueous methanol solutions, where the methanol-water mixed clusters are more predominant in the middle-concentration region due to the relatively weak hydrophobic interactions of the methyl group in methanol.

Identification of Valence Electronic States Reflecting the Hydrogen Bonding in Liquid Ethanol

The temperature-dependent X-ray emission spectra of liquid ethanol were calculated theoretically using a semi-classical approximation to the Kramers-Heisenberg formula, which includes the dynamical effects induced by a core-hole. Soft X-ray emission spectroscopic measurements were performed to discern the changes in the hydrogen bonding (h-bonding) structure of liquid ethanol using a temperature-controlled liquid cell at 241 and 313 K. The relative intensities of the peaks at approximately 526.5 and 527.1 eV varied with temperature, and the corresponding behavior was reproduced theoretically, although the variation with temperature in the calculated spectra were more enhanced than that in the experiment. The two peaks can be attributed to the 3a″ + 10a' mixed state and pure 3a″ state, respectively, depending on the behavior of the local h-bonding structure. The splitting of the 3a″ component occurred because of the h-bonding behavior of liquid ethanol. Furthermore, the size of the ethanol cluster decreased with an increase in temperature, mainly due to the breaking of the one-donor/one-acceptor type h-bonding. Our studies suggest that the electronic state of liquid ethanol reflects several types of h-bonding structures, and the ratios of these h-bonding types vary with temperature.

A Direct Probe of the Hydrogen Bond Network in Aqueous Glycerol Aerosols

The properties of aerosols are of paramount importance in atmospheric chemistry and human health. The hydrogen bond network of glycerol-water aerosols generated from an aqueous solution with different mixing ratios is probed directly with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The carbon and oxygen X-ray spectra reveal contributions from gas and condensed phase components of the aerosol. It is shown that water suppresses glycerol evaporation up to a critical mixing ratio. A dielectric analysis using terahertz spectroscopy coupled with infrared spectroscopy of the bulk solutions provides a picture of the microscopic heterogeneity prevalent in the hydrogen bond network when combined with the photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The hydrogen bond network is composed of three intertwined regions. At low concentrations, glycerol molecules are surrounded by water forming a solvated water network. Adding more glycerol leads to a confined water network, maximizing at 22 mol %, beyond which the aerosol resembles bulk glycerol. This microscopic view of hydrogen bonding networks holds promise in probing evaporation, diffusion dynamics, and reactivity in aqueous aerosols.

Properties of Hydrogen-Bonded Networks in Ethanol-Water Liquid Mixtures as a Function of Temperature: Diffraction Experiments and Computer Simulations

New X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments have been performed on ethanol–water mixtures as a function of decreasing temperature, so that such diffraction data are now available over the entire composition range. Extensive molecular dynamics simulations show that the all-atom interatomic potentials applied are adequate for gaining insight into the hydrogen-bonded network structure, as well as into its changes on cooling. Various tools have been exploited for revealing details concerning hydrogen bonding, as a function of decreasing temperature and ethanol concentration, like determining the H-bond acceptor and donor sites, calculating the cluster-size distributions and cluster topologies, and computing the Laplace spectra and fractal dimensions of the networks. It is found that 5-membered hydrogen-bonded cycles are dominant up to an ethanol mole fraction x_eth = 0.7 at room temperature, above which the concentrated ring structures nearly disappear. Percolation has been given special attention, so that it could be shown that at low temperatures, close to the freezing point, even the mixture with 90% ethanol (x_eth = 0.9) possesses a three-dimensional (3D) percolating network. Moreover, the water subnetwork also percolates even at room temperature, with a percolation transition occurring around x_eth = 0.5.

Preparation and DFT Study for New Three-Ring Supramolecular H-Bonded Induced Liquid Crystal Complexes

Supramolecular three-ring Schiff base novel liquid crystal complexes have been prepared and investigated. Schiff bases of para-substituted aniline derivatives and para-pyridine carbaldehyde have been prepared and then mixed in equimolar quantities with para-alkoxy benzoic acids. On one side, the alkoxy chain length varies from 8 to 16 carbon atoms. On the other side, terminal small compact groups substituting aniline with various polarities are used. Hydrogen-bonding interaction was elucidated by FTIR spectroscopy. The mesomorphic thermal and optical characteristics of the samples were obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). All samples exhibit enantiotropic mesophases. Experimental results obtained for the induced mesophases were correlated with density functional theory (DFT) theoretical calculations. The results revealed that both the polar compact groups' polarity and the alkoxy chain lengths contribute strongly to mesomorphic characteristics and thermal stabilities of the mesophases. Surprisingly, the observed values of enthalpy changes associated with the crystalline mesomorphic transitions lie in the range of 2.2-12.5 kJ/mol. However, the enthalpy changes corresponding to the mesomorphic-isotropic transitions vary from 0.9 to 13.9 kJ/mol, depending on the polarity of para-attached groups to the aniline moiety.

New Liquid Crystal Assemblies Based on Cyano-Hydrogen Bonding Interactions

A new selection of supramolecular liquid crystal complexes based on complementary molecules formed via hydrogen-bonding interactions is reported. All prepared complexes were prepared from 4-n-alkoxybenzoic acid (An) and N-4-cyanobenzylidene-4-n-(hexyloxy)benzenamine (I). FT-IR, temperature gradient NMR, Mass Spectrometer and Chromatography spectroscopy were carried out to confirm the -CN and -COOH H-bonded complexation by observing their Fermi-bands and the effects of the 1H-NMR signals as well as its elution signal from HPLC. Moreover, binary phase diagrams were established for further confirmation. All formed complexes (I/An) were studied by the use of differential scanning calorimetry and their phase properties were validated through the use of polarized optical microscopy Results of mesomorphic characterization revealed that all presented complexes exhibited enantiotropic mesophases and their type was dependent on the terminal lengths of alkoxy chains. Also, the mesomorphic temperature ranges decreased in the order I/A6 > I/A8 > I/A10 > I/A16 with linear dependency on the chain length. Finally, the density functional theory computational modeling has been carried out to explain the experimental findings. The relation between the dimensional parameters was established to show the effect of the aspect ratio on the mesophase range and stability. The normalized entropy of the clearing transitions (∆S/R) was calculated to illustrate the molecular interaction enhancements with the chain lengths.

The molecular structure of the surface of water-ethanol mixtures

Mixtures of water and alcohol exhibit an excess surface concentration of alcohol as a result of the amphiphilic nature of the alcohol molecule, which has important consequences for the physico-chemical properties of water-alcohol mixtures. Here we use a combination of intensity vibrational sum-frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy, heterodyne-detected VSFG (HD-VSFG), and core-level photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) to investigate the molecular properties of water-ethanol mixtures at the air-liquid interface. We find that increasing the ethanol concentration up to a molar fraction (MF) of 0.1 leads to a steep increase of the surface density of the ethanol molecules, and an increased ordering of the ethanol molecules at the surface. When the ethanol concentration is further increased, the surface density of ethanol remains more or less constant, while the orientation of the ethanol molecules becomes increasingly disordered. The used techniques of PES and VSFG provide complementary information on the density and orientation of ethanol molecules at the surface of water, thus providing new information on the molecular-scale properties of the surface of water-alcohol mixtures over a wide range of compositions. This information is invaluable in understanding the chemical and physical properties of water-alcohol mixtures.

Molecular-scale origins of solution nanostructure and excess thermodynamic properties in a water/amphiphile mixture

The molecular and nanoscale origins of nonideality in excess thermodynamic properties are essential to understanding cosolvent mixtures, yet they remain challenging to determine. Here, we consider a binary mixture of water and an amphiphile, N,N,N',N'-tetramethylmalonamide (TMMA), which is characterized by strong hydrogen bonding between the two components and no hydrogen bonding between amphiphiles. Using molecular dynamics simulation, validated with excess volume measurements and X-ray scattering, we identify three distinct solution regimes across the composition range of the binary mixture and find that the transition between two of these regimes, marked by the water percolation threshold, is closely correlated with minima in the excess volume and excess enthalpy. Structural analysis of the simulations reveals an interplay between local interactions and solution nanostructure, determined by the relative strength of the water-water and water-amphiphile hydrogen bonding interactions. By comparison with other amphiphiles, such as linear alcohols, the relative strength of like and unlike interactions between water and amphiphile affects the relationship between thermodynamics and structural regimes. This provides insight into how molecular forces of mutual solvation interact across length scales and how they manifest in excess thermodynamic properties.

Effects of formulation variables on the in vitro performance of testosterone transdermal gel

The variation in the critical formulation variables during life-cycle of the drug product may result in undesirable changes in product performance. The current study aimed at evaluating the effects of formulation variables on the in vitro performance of carbopol-loaded testosterone gel. The formulation variables included concentrations of permeation enhancers, testosterone, ethanol, carbopol and sodium hydroxide. In vitro evaluation of the product performance included assessment of the rheological and morphological properties, kinetics of ethanol evaporation, and drug permeation through human cadaver skin. The results revealed that carbopol, sodium hydroxide and testosterone concentrations increased the viscosity of the gels significantly (p < 0.05). However, carbopol concentration was the only critical variable to affect the yield stress of the gel. The concentration of ethanol was critical to metamorphosis of the gel due to solvent evaporation upon application to skin with minor contributions from other formulation variables. The increase in concentration of isopropyl myristate or isopropyl palmitate to 5%, ethanol to 70%, and testosterone to 2%, enhanced the testosterone permeation across the skin by ten-folds. Synergistic effects of ethanol and permeation enhancers on testosterone permeation was observed. In conclusion, strict control over the critical formulation variables should be exercised during manufacturing to ensure desired product performance.

Experimental and Computational Approaches of Newly Polymorphic Supramolecular H-Bonded Liquid Crystal Complexes

New 1:2 liquid crystalline supramolecular H-bonded complexes (SMHBCs) were synthesized through double H-bond interactions between 4-(nicotinoyloxy) phenyl nicotinate as the base component and two molecules of 4-n-alkoxybenzoic acid (An). The base component was expected to be in two conformers according to the orientation of the N atom and the carboxylate group, syn conformer (I) and anti-conformer (II). DFT calculations revealed that only one of the two possible conformers of I exists, and the addition of the two molecules of the alkoxy acids (A n) did not affect its conformation. The mesomorphic properties of all of the prepared complexes (I/A n), bearing different terminal flexible alkoxy chains were investigated, and the formation of the H-bonds were confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the phases were identified by polarized optical microscopy (POM), and FT-IR spectroscopy. Highly thermally stable mesophases possessing broad temperature ranges were observed for all investigated complexes compared to their individual components. Depending on the length of the terminal flexible alkoxy chain, the prepared SMHBCs were shown to exhibit di- or tri-morphic enantiotropic mesophases. The effect of replacing one of the -COO- connecting units by an azo group (-N=N-) in the basic molecule (I), on the mesomorphic properties has been investigated experimentally (via DSC) and theoretically (via DFT). The DFT calculations revealed that the polarizability, the dipole moment, and the aspect ratio of the investigated SMHBCs are lower than those of their corresponding ester/azo analogs. All these factors rationalize the enhanced smectic mesophase ranges of the complexes compared with those of the ester/azo analogs. The high aspect ratios and dipole moments of the SMHBCs of the azo derivative enforces the lateral intermolecular attraction that permits the formation of the more ordered smectic C mesophase with respect to the enhanced polymorphic mesophases of the diester derivative.

Generation and simple characterization of flat, liquid jets

We present an approach to determine the absolute thickness profile of flat liquid jets, which takes advantage of the information of thin film interference combined with light absorption, both captured in a single microscopic image. The feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated on our compact experimental setup used to generate micrometer thin, free-flowing liquid jet sheets upon collision of two identical laminar cylindrical jets. Stable operation was achieved over several hours of the flat jet in vacuum (10^-4 mbar), making the system ideally suitable for soft x-ray photon spectroscopy of liquid solutions. We characterize the flat jet size and thickness generated with two solvents, water and ethanol, employing different flow rates and nozzles of variable sizes. Our results show that a gradient of thickness ranging from a minimal thickness of 2 µm to over 10 µm can be found within the jet surface area. This enables the tunability of the sample thickness in situ, allowing the optimization of the transmitted photon flux for the chosen photon energy and sample. We demonstrate the feasibility of x-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments in transmission mode by measuring at the oxygen K-edge of ethanol. Our characterization method and the description of the experimental setup and its reported performance are expected to expand the range of applications and facilitate the use of flat liquid jets for spectroscopy experiments.

New Rod-Like H-Bonded Assembly Systems: Mesomorphic and Geometrical Aspects

Experimental and geometrical approaches of new systems of mesomorphic 1:1 supramolecular H-bonded complexes (SMHBCs) of five rings are discussed. The H-bonding between 4-alkoxyphenylimino benzoic acids (An, as proton acceptor) and 4-(4′–pyridylazophenyl) 4′′-alkoxybenzoates (Bm, as proton donor) were investigated. Mesomorphic behaviors were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and mesophase textures were identified by polarized light microscopy (POM). H-bonded assembly was established by FT-IR spectroscopic measurements via Fermi band discussion. Thermal and theoretical factors were predicted for all synthesized complexes by density functional theory (DFT) predictions. The results revealed that all prepared complexes were monomorphic, with a broad range of smectic A phases with a high thermal stability of enantiotropic mesophase. Furthermore, DFT stimulations illustrated the experimental results in terms of the influence of the chain length either of the acid or the base component. Many parameters, such as the calculated stability, the dipole moment and the polarizability of the H-bonded complexes, illustrate how these parameters work together to enhance the smectic mesophases with the obtained stability and range.

Precipitation and Transformation of Vaterite Calcium Carbonate in the Presence of Some Organic Solvents

In this paper, the production of CaCO₃ particles via the carbonation route in the reaction of CaCl₂ and CO₂, using NH₃ as a promoter of CO₂ absorption, was studied. The solvents used as the reaction media for CaCO₃ precipitation were aqueous solutions of methanol, isopropanol and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), in a concentration range of 0–20% (v/v). It was found that the presence of an organic additive influenced the precipitation rate, the content of vaterite in the obtained product, the morphology and the size of the precipitated CaCO₃ particles, as well as the rate of its transformation into calcite. The presence of all added organic solvents reduced the vaterite concentration in the produced CaCO₃ both at the end of the reaction and after incubation in the reaction medium for 1 h. However, the transformation of vaterite particles into calcite in the tested solutions was slower when the 4 h and 24 h procedures were compared. The interactions of solvents with calcite and vaterite were compared using HPLC tests. DMSO molecules interacted with vaterite particles the most strongly, while the interaction of isopropanol with this polymorph was the weakest. The opposite effect was observed for interactions with calcite particles, and the affinity decreased in the series: isopropanol, methanol, DMSO.

Introducing Normalized Centrifugation for a More Accurate Thermodynamic Analysis of Molybdenum Disulfide Dispersions: A Study on Mixed Solvents of Alcohols and Amines with Water

A more accurate solution thermodynamic analysis of colloidal molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) nanosheets dispersed in 91 combinations of organic solvent (alcohols and amines)/water mixtures is made possible by the application of a viscosity- and density-normalized centrifugation method to the post-sonication stock solution. This centrifugation method accounts the solvent mixture's density and viscosity in order to apply different centrifugation times based on Stoke's law and in effect eliminates the kinetic interferences arising from different densities and viscosities of the solvent mixtures used as the dispersing media. This allows us to reveal that the solvent's molecular size and hydrogen-bonding strength are additional important factors that determine the Gibbs free energy of mixing, other than the matching of the Hansen solubility parameters between the dispersed nanosheet and the dispersing medium. In addition, ζ potential turns out to be a negligible factor for the nanosheet dispersibility since surface charges are mainly localized on the edge sites. This is because restacking mainly occurs via the basal planes, which are virtually chargeless. This study further extends our understanding of the dispersibility mechanism of 2D nanosheets in various solvent/water mixtures.

Bubble Rise Velocity and Surface Mobility in Aqueous Solutions of Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate and n-Propanol

Aqueous solutions of simple alcohols exhibit many anomalies, one of which is a change in the mobility of the bubble surface. This work aimed to determine the effect of the presence of another surface-active agent on bubble rise velocity and bubble surface mobility. The motion of the spherical bubble in an aqueous solution of n-propanol and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) was monitored by a high-speed camera. At low alcohol concentrations (xP < 0.01), both the propanol and SDS molecules behaved as surfactants, the surface tension decreased and the bubble surface was immobile. The effect of the SDS diminished with increasing alcohol concentrations. In solutions with a high propanol content (xP > 0.1), the SDS molecules did not adsorb to the phase interface and thus, the surface tension of the solution was not reduced with the addition of SDS. Due to the rapid desorption of propanol molecules from the bottom of the bubble, a surface tension gradient was not formed. The drag coefficient can be calculated using formulas for the mobile surface of a spherical bubble.

Insight into the Hydration of Cationic Surfactants: A Thermodynamic and Dielectric Study of Functionalized Quaternary Ammonium Chlorides

Hydrophobic interactions are one of the main thermodynamic driving forces in self-assembly, folding, and association processes. To understand the dehydration-driven solvent exposure of hydrophobic surfaces, the micellization of functionalized decyldimethylammonium chlorides, XC₁₀Me₂N⁺Cl^-, with a polar functional group, X = C₂OH, C₂OMe, C₂OC₂OMe, C₂OOEt, together with the "reference" compound decyltrimethylammonium chloride, C₁₀Me₃N⁺Cl^-, was investigated in aqueous solution by density measurements, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). From the density data, the apparent molar volumes of monomers and micelles were estimated, whereas the ITC data were analyzed with the help of a model equation, yielding the thermodynamic parameters and aggregation number. From the DRS spectra, effective hydration numbers of the free monomers and micelles were deduced. The comprehensive analysis of the obtained results shows that the thermodynamics of micellization are strongly affected by the nature of the functional group. Surprisingly, the hydration of micelles formed by surfactant cations with a single alkyl chain on quaternary ammonium is approximately the same, regardless of the alkyl chain length or functionalization of the headgroup. However, notable differences were found for the free monomers where increasing polarity lowers the effective hydration number.

Water fluctuation in methanol, ethanol, and 1-propanol aqueous-mixture probed by Brownian motion

The origin of the driving force in Brownian motion is the collision between the colloidal particle and the molecules of the surrounding fluid. Therefore, Brownian motion contains information on the local solvent structures of the surrounding colloid. The mean square displacement in a water-ethanol mixture is greater than that anticipated from the macroscopic shear viscosity, indicating that the microscopic movement of Brownian motion involves the local information on the water-ethanol mixture on a molecular level, i.e., an inhomogeneity in the Brownian particle size (∼1 μm). Here, the Brownian motion of mixtures of water and methanol, ethanol, and 1-propanol are systematically investigated. Similar discrepancies between the microscopic and macroscopic viscosities are observed at low alcohol molar concentrations, for all the alcohol mixtures. This means that inhomogeneity with water fluctuation is important in explanation of the unusual Brownian diffusions of alcohol aqueous solutions. The Brownian motion also reveals a thermal energy conversion mechanism between translation and rotation.

Structures, intermolecular interactions, and chemical hardness of binary water-organic solvents: a molecular dynamics study

The evolution of structural properties, thermodynamics and averaged (dynamic) total hardness values as a function of the composition of binary water-organic solvents, was rationalized in view of the intermolecular interactions. The organic solvents considered were ethanol, acetonitrile, and isopropanol at 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 mass fractions, and the results were obtained using molecular dynamics simulations. The site-to-site radial distribution functions reveal a well-defined peak for the first coordination shell in all solvents. A characteristic peak of the second coordination shell exists in aqueous mixtures of acetonitrile, whereas in the water-alcohol solvents, a second peak develops with the increase in alcohol content. From the computed coordination numbers, averaged hydrogen bonds and their lifetimes, we found that water mixed with acetonitrile largely preserves its structural features and promotes the acetonitrile structuring. Both the water and alcohol structures in their mixtures are disturbed and form hydrogen bonds between molecules of different kinds. The dynamic hardness values are obtained as the average over the total hardness values of 1200 snapshots per solvent type, extracted from the equilibrium dynamics. The dynamic hardness profile has a non-linear evolution with the liquid compositions, similarly to the thermodynamic properties of these non-ideal solvents. Temperature-Dependent Segregation in Alcohol-Water Binary Mixtures Is Driven by Water Clustering

Previous neutron scattering work, combined with computer simulated structure analysis, has established that binary mixtures of methanol and water partially segregate into water-rich and alcohol-rich components. It has furthermore been noted that, between methanol mole fractions of 0.27 and 0.54, both components, water and methanol, simultaneously form percolating clusters. This partial segregation is enhanced with decreasing temperature. The mole fraction of 0.27 also corresponds to the point of maximum excess entropy for ethanol-water mixtures. Here, we study the degree of molecular segregation in aqueous ethanol solutions at a mole fraction of 0.27 and compare it with that in methanol-water solutions at the same concentration. Structural information is extracted for these solutions using neutron diffraction coupled with empirical potential structure refinement. We show that ethanol, like methanol, bi-percolates at this concentration and that, in a similar manner to methanol, alcohol segregation, as measured by the proximity of neighboring methyl sidechains, is increased upon cooling the solution. Water clustering is found to be significantly enhanced in both alcohol solutions compared to the water clustering that occurs for random, hard sphere-like, mixing with no hydrogen bonds between molecules. Alcohol clustering via the hydrophobic groups is, on the other hand, only slightly sensitive to the water hydrogen bond network. These results support the idea that it is the water clustering that drives the partial segregation of the two components, and hence the observed excess entropy of mixing.

Dilution of whisky - the molecular perspective

Whisky is distilled to around 70% alcohol by volume (vol-%) then diluted to about 40 vol-%, and often drunk after further slight dilution to enhance its taste. The taste of whisky is primarily associated with amphipathic molecules, such as guaiacol, but why and how dilution enhances the taste is not well understood. We carried out computer simulations of water-ethanol mixtures in the presence of guaiacol, providing atomistic details on the structure of the liquid mixture. We found that guaiacol is preferentially associated with ethanol, and, therefore, primarily found at the liquid-air interface in mixtures that contain up to 45 vol-% of ethanol. At ethanol concentrations of 59 vol-% or higher, guaiacol is increasingly surrounded by ethanol molecules and is driven to the bulk. This indicates that the taste of guaiacol in the whisky would be enhanced upon dilution prior to bottling. Our findings may apply to other flavour-giving amphipathic molecules and could contribute to optimising the production of spirits for desired tastes. Furthermore, it sheds light on the molecular structure of water-alcohol mixtures that contain small solutes, and reveals that interactions with the water may be negligible already at 89 vol-% of ethanol.
