High resolution spectroscopy of jet cooled phenyl radical: The ν1 and ν2 a1 symmetry C–H stretching modes

Isomer-Dependent Electron Affinities of Fluorophenyl Radicals, •C6H5-xFx (2 ≤ x ≤ 4)

Di-, tri-, and tetrafluorophenyl radicals each have three regioisomers, several of which can form multiple distinct radical structures. We present the photoelectron spectra of the di-, tri-, and tetrafluorophenide regioisomer anions generated from their associated fluorobenzene precursors. By comparing the spectra to the results of density functional theory calculations, we determine that in cases where more than one possible radical isomer is possible for a given regioisomer (radicals formed from 1,2-difluorobenzene, 1,3-difluorobenzene, 1,2,3-trifluorobenzene, and 1,2,4-trifluorobenzene) the most stable anion corresponds to a less stable neutral, suggesting that the reactive C-center on these fluorine-substituted phenyl groups can be controlled by charge state. Full analyses of the spectra and computational results yield further insights into the differences between the electronic and molecular structures of the fluorophenyl radicals and their associated anions.

Trend in the Electron Affinities of Fluorophenyl Radicals ·C6H5-xFx (1 ≤ x ≤ 4)

The electron affinities (EAs) of a series of ·C6H5-xFx (1 ≤ x ≤ 4) fluorophenyl radicals are determined from the photoelectron spectra of their associated fluorophenide anions generated from C6H6-xFx (1 ≤ x ≤ 4) fluorobenzene precursors. The spectra show a near-linear incremental increase in EA of 0.4 eV/x. The spectra exhibit vibrationally unresolved and broad detachment transitions consistent with significant differences in the molecular structures of the anion and neutral radical species. The experimental EAs and broad spectra are consistent with density functional theory calculations on these species. While the anion detachment transitions all involve an electron in a non-bonding orbital, the differences in structure between the neutral and anion are in part due to repulsion between the lone pair on the C-center on which the excess charge is localized and neighboring F atoms. The C6H5-xFx- (2 ≤ x ≤ 4) spectra show features at lower binding energy that appear to be due to constitutional isomers formed in the ion source.

Tunable mid-infrared generation via wide-band four-wave mixing in silicon nitride waveguides

We demonstrate wide-band frequency down-conversion to the mid-infrared (MIR) using four-wave mixing (FWM) of near-infrared (NIR) femtosecond-duration pulses from an Er:fiber laser, corresponding to 100 THz spectral translation. Photonic-chip-based silicon nitride waveguides provide the FWM medium. Engineered dispersion in the nanophotonic geometry and the wide transparency range of silicon nitride enable large-detuning FWM phase-matching and results in tunable MIR from 2.6 to 3.6 μm on a single chip with 100-pJ-scale pump-pulse energies. Additionally, we observe up to 25 dB broadband parametric gain for NIR pulses when the FWM process is operated in a frequency up-conversion configuration. Our results demonstrate how integrated photonic circuits pumped with fiber lasers could realize multiple nonlinear optical phenomena on the same chip and lead to engineered synthesis of broadband, tunable, and coherent light across the NIR and MIR wavelength bands.

Mid-infrared frequency comb generation via cascaded quadratic nonlinearities in quasi-phase-matched waveguides

We experimentally demonstrate a simple configuration for mid-infrared (MIR) frequency comb generation in quasi-phase-matched lithium niobate waveguides using the cascaded-χ⁽²⁾ nonlinearity. With nanojoule-scale pulses from an Er:fiber laser, we observe octave-spanning supercontinuum in the near-infrared with dispersive wave generation in the 2.5-3 μm region and intrapulse difference frequency generation in the 4-5 μm region. By engineering the quasi-phase-matched grating profiles, tunable, narrowband MIR and broadband MIR spectra are both observed in this geometry. Finally, we perform numerical modeling using a nonlinear envelope equation, which shows good quantitative agreement with the experiment-and can be used to inform waveguide designs to tailor the MIR frequency combs. Our results identify a path to a simple single-branch approach to mid-infrared frequency comb generation in a compact platform using commercial Er:fiber technology.

Note: Pulsed single longitudinal mode optical parametric oscillator for sub-Doppler spectroscopy of jet cooled transient species

We present a pulsed single longitudinal mode optical parametric oscillator that was recently constructed for sub-Doppler spectroscopic studies of transient species in a supersonic slit jet expansion environment. The system consists of a Littman-type grazing-incidence-grating resonator and a KTP crystal and is pumped at 532 nm. By spatially filtering the pump laser beam and employing an active cavity-length-stabilization scheme, a frequency down-conversion efficiency up to 18% and generation of Fourier-transform limited pulses with a typical pulse duration of ∼5.5 ns and a bandwidth less than 120 MHz have been achieved. In combination with a slit jet expansion, a sub-Doppler spectrum of SiC₂ has been recorded at ∼498 nm, showing a spectral resolution of Δν/ν ≈ 6.2 × 10^-7.
