Effect of grain constraint on the field requirements for magnetocaloric effect in Ni45Co5Mn40Sn10 melt-spun ribbons

On the instability of the giant direct magnetocaloric effect in CoMn0.915Fe0.085Ge at. % metamagnetic compounds

The giant magnetocaloric effect was quantified in CoMn_1-xFe_xGe (x = 0.085–0.12) nom. at. % polycrystals across the high temperature hexagonal (P6₃/mmc) to low temperature orthorhombic (Pnma) phase transition via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and multiple (thermo) magnetization measurements. It was found that increasing Fe content led to the decrease of both the martensitic transformation temperature and entropy change (\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\Delta S$$\end{document}ΔS) at the point of the phase transition. Moreover, first-time magnetocaloric measurements resulted in irreproducible entropy change versus temperature diagrams, which was attributed to the release of internal pressure in bulk samples that disintegrated into powder upon transformation. CoMn_1-xFe_xGe demonstrated larger magnetic field-induced entropy changes and giant magnetocaloric effect (MCE) compared to other CoMnGe alloys doped with Si, Sn, Ti, and Ga. However, the observed brittleness and apparent change in volume at the magnetic transition was posited to influence the material’s potential for regenerative applications.

Influencing Martensitic Transition in Epitaxial Ni-Mn-Ga-Co Films with Large Angle Grain Boundaries

Magnetocaloric materials based on field-induced first order transformations such as Ni-Mn-Ga-Co are promising for more environmentally friendly cooling. Due to the underlying martensitic transformation, a large hysteresis can occur, which in turn reduces the efficiency of a cooling cycle. Here, we analyse the influence of the film microstructure on the thermal hysteresis and focus especially on large angle grain boundaries. We control the microstructure and grain boundary density by depositing films with local epitaxy on different substrates: Single crystalline MgO(0 0 1), MgO(1 1 0) and Al2O3(0 0 0 1). By combining local electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and global texture measurements with thermomagnetic measurements, we correlate a smaller hysteresis with the presence of grain boundaries. In films with grain boundaries, the hysteresis is decreased by about 30% compared to single crystalline films. Nevertheless, a large grain boundary density leads to a broadened transition. To explain this behaviour, we discuss the influence of grain boundaries on the martensitic transformation. While grain boundaries act as nucleation sites, they also lead to different strains in the material, which gives rise to various transition temperatures inside one film. We can show that a thoughtful design of the grain boundary microstructure is an important step to optimize the hysteresis.

Optimizing the Caloric Properties of Cu-Doped Ni-Mn-Ga Alloys

With the purpose to optimize the functional properties of Heusler alloys for their use in solid-state refrigeration, the characteristics of the martensitic and magnetic transitions undergone by Ni₅₀Mn_25−xGa₂₅Cu_x (x = 3–11) alloys have been studied. The results reveal that, for a Cu content of x = 5.5–7.5, a magnetostructural transition between paramagnetic austenite and ferromagnetic martensite takes place. In such a case, magnetic field and stress act in the same sense, lowering the critical combined fields to induce the transformation; moreover, magnetocaloric and elastocaloric effects are both direct, suggesting the use of combined fields to improve the overall refrigeration capacity of the alloy. Within this range of compositions, the measured transformation entropy is increased owing to the magnetic contribution to entropy, showing a maximum at composition x = 6, in which the magnetization jump at the transformation is the largest of the set. At the same time, the temperature hysteresis of the transformation displays a minimum at x = 6, attributed to the optimal lattice compatibility between austenite and martensite. We show that, among this system, the optimal caloric performance is found for the x = 6 composition, which displays high isothermal entropy changes (−36 J·kg⁻¹·K⁻¹ under 5 T and −8.5 J·kg⁻¹·K⁻¹ under 50 MPa), suitable working temperature (300 K), and low thermal hysteresis (3 K).

Role of disorder when upscaling magnetocaloric Ni-Co-Mn-Al Heusler alloys from thin films to ribbons

Research in functional magnetic materials often employs thin films as model systems for finding new chemical compositions with promising properties. However, the scale-up of thin films towards bulk-like structures is challenging, since the material synthesis conditions are entirely different for thin films and e.g. rapid quenching methods. As one of the consequences, the type and degree of order in thin films and melt-spun ribbons are usually different, leading to different magnetic properties. In this work, using the example of magnetocaloric Ni-Co-Mn-Al melt-spun ribbons and thin films, we show that the excellent functional properties of the films can be reproduced also in ribbons, if an appropriate heat treatment is applied, that installs the right degree of order in the ribbons. We show that some chemical disorder is needed to get a pronounced and sharp martensitic transition. Increasing the order with annealing improves the magnetic properties only up to a point where selected types of disorder survive, which in turn compromise the magnetic properties. These findings allow us to understand the impact of the type and degree of disorder on the functional properties, paving the way for a faster transfer of combinatorial thin film research towards bulk-like materials for magnetic Heusler alloys.

Enhanced magnetocaloric effect in Ni-Mn-Sn-Co alloys with two successive magnetostructural transformations

High magnetocaloric refrigeration performance requires large magnetic entropy change ΔS M and broad working temperature span ΔT FWHM . A fourth element doping of Co in ternary Ni-Mn-Sn alloy may significantly enhance the saturation magnetization of the alloy and thus enhance the ΔS M . Here, the effects of Co-doping on the martensite transformation, magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effects (MCE) of quaternary Ni47-xMn43Sn10Cox (x = 0, 6, 11) alloys were investigated. The martensite transformation temperatures decrease while austenite Curie point increases with Co content increasing to x = 6 and 11, thus broadening the temperature window for a high magnetization austenite (13.5, 91.7 and 109.1 A·m2/kg for x = 0, 6 and 11, respectively). Two successive magnetostructural transformations (A → 10 M and A → 10 M + 6 M) occur in the alloy x = 6, which are responsible for the giant magnetic entropy change ΔS M =  29.5 J/kg·K, wide working temperature span ΔT FWHM  = 14 K and large effective refrigeration capacity RC eff  = 232 J/kg under a magnetic field of 5.0 T. These results suggest that Ni40.6Mn43.3Sn10.0Co6.1 alloy may act as a potential solid-state magnetic refrigerant working at room temperature.

Reversible Martensitic Transformation under Low Magnetic Fields in Magnetic Shape Memory Alloys

Magnetic field-induced, reversible martensitic transformations in NiCoMnIn meta-magnetic shape memory alloys were studied under constant and varying mechanical loads to understand the role of coupled magneto-mechanical loading on the transformation characteristics and the magnetic field levels required for reversible phase transformations. The samples with two distinct microstructures were tested along the [001] austenite crystallographic direction using a custom designed magneto-thermo-mechanical characterization device while carefully controlling their thermodynamic states through isothermal constant stress and stress-varying magnetic field ramping. Measurements revealed that these meta-magnetic shape memory alloys were capable of generating entropy changes of 14 J kg^-1 K^-1 or 22 J kg ^-1 K^-1, and corresponding magnetocaloric cooling with reversible shape changes as high as 5.6% under only 1.3 T, or 3 T applied magnetic fields, respectively. Thus, we demonstrate that this alloy is suitable as an active component in near room temperature devices, such as magnetocaloric regenerators, and that the field levels generated by permanent magnets can be sufficient to completely transform the alloy between its martensitic and austenitic states if the loading sequence developed, herein, is employed.
