Thermodynamics of hydration of fullerols [C60(OH)n] and hydrogen bond dynamics in their hydration shells

Highly Hydroxylated Buckminsterfullerene Complexes with an Endohedral Iodide Anion

The properties of the complexes I^-@C₆₀(OH)₂₀ and I^-@C₆₀(OH)₃₀ have been determined using the quantum chemical DFT PBE0 method to assess the possibility of synthesis of highly hydroxylated fullerene endo-iodides for the use in radiotherapy of different organs. The arrangement of the hydroxyl groups corresponds to the location of halogen atoms in (D_5d)-C₆₀F₂₀ and (D_3d)-C₆₀Cl₃₀. Negative-charged iodine is localized in the center of the fullerene cavity and has no significant influence on the IR spectra of hydroxylated fullerenes. The exothermic effect of iodide anion encapsulation in C₆₀(OH)_n (0.33 eV at n = 20; 0.03 eV at n = 30) is smaller than in C₆₀ (0.78 eV). The energies of the lower excited singlet states computed by the TD DFT method for I^-@C₆₀(OH)_n (2.11 eV at n = 20; 1.77 eV at n = 30) are larger than those for I^-@C₆₀ (1.36 eV). They indicate a low reactivity, making it possible to synthesize such complexes for medical use.

Surface Activity and Aggregation Behavior of Polyhydroxylated Fullerenes in Aqueous Solutions

Polyhydroxylated fullerene (PHF) surface activity and aggregation behavior at the air-water interface were examined using surface tension and resonance-enhanced second harmonic generation (SHG). Surface tension data showed that PHFs are surface active with a limiting surface excess corresponding to 130 Ų/molecule in aqueous (Millipore water) solutions. Increasing the solution-phase ionic strength (through the addition of NaCl) reduces the PHF surface excess. Conductivity measurements show that PHFs carry a single charge, presumably negative. Surface-specific SHG experiments show a small but measurable fixed wavelength, nonlinear response from solutions having surface excess coverages as low as ∼400 Ų/molecule. The SHG response of PHF solutions in the low-concentration limit shows unexpected behavior, implying that at bulk concentrations below 0.06 mg/mL, PHF monomers adsorb to the surface and interfere destructively with the intrinsic nonlinear susceptibility of the aqueous/vapor interface, leading to a ∼75% reduction in the SH signal. Above a PHF concentration of 0.0.06 mg/mL, the SH signal begins to rise in the Millipore and 50 mM NaCl solutions but remains very low in the 500 mM NaCl solutions. From this behavior, we infer that an increased nonlinear optical response is due to adsorbed aggregates.

Effects of solvation shell relaxation on chain association mechanisms in poly(3-hexylthiophene) solutions

Using poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as a model conjugated polymer and atomistic molecular dynamics simulations with carefully verified force fields, we performed in-depth investigations of solvation shell properties of P3HT chains (15 repeating units per chain) in two representative groups of non-polar (or aprotic) organic solvents (better solvents: ortho-dichlorobenzene, bromobenzene, and chlorobenzene; poorer solvents: chloroform, para-xylene, and toluene). We demonstrated that solvation shell relaxation properties in P3HT solutions dictate the formation of regular π-π associations and, hence, crystallinity through the initial chain association and subsequent chain sliding. In contrast, the mean features of polymer-solvent interactions, including solvation free energy and radial distribution function, present little or no difference for all solvent media investigated. Better-solvent media were revealed to bear relatively large values of the first solvation shell relaxation time (τ1 ≫ 100 ps) as well as larger ratios of relaxation times for the first two solvation shells (τ1/τ2 > 2), and vice versa for poorer-solvent media (τ1 ≪ 100 ps and τ1/τ2 < 2). The linear hexyl side-chain unit was noted to substantially enlarge both quantities while notably reducing the solvation free energy as well. As discussed herein, these findings shed new light on the mechanistic features by which solvent quality impacts the degree of π-π association crucial for modern applications with crystalline conjugated polymers.

Synthesis, Mass Spectroscopy Detection, and Density Functional Theory Investigations of the Gd Endohedral Complexes of C82 Fullerenols

Gd endohedral complexes of C82 fullerenols were synthesized and mass spectrometry analysis of their composition was carried out. It was established that the synthesis yields a series of fullerenols Gd@C82Ox(OH)y (x = 0, 3; y = 8, 16, 24, 36, 44). The atomic and electronic structure and properties of the synthesized fullerenols were investigated using the density functional theory calculations. It was shown that the presence of endohedral gadolinium increases the reactivity of fullerenols. It is proposed that the high-spin endohedral fullerenols are promising candidates for application in magnetic resonance imaging.

Interfacial structural crossover and hydration thermodynamics of charged C60 in water

Classical molecular dynamics simulations of the hydration thermodynamics, structure, and dynamics of water in hydration shells of charged buckminsterfullerenes are presented in this study. Charging of fullerenes leads to a structural transition in the hydration shell, accompanied by creation of a significant population of dangling O-H bonds pointing toward the solute. In contrast to the well accepted structure-function paradigm, this interfacial structural transition causes nearly no effect on either the dynamics of hydration water or on the solvation thermodynamics. Linear response to the solute charge is maintained despite significant structural changes in the hydration shell, and solvation thermodynamic potentials are nearly insensitive to the altering structure. Only solvation heat capacities, which are higher thermodynamic derivatives of the solvation free energy, indicate some sensitivity to the local hydration structure. We have separated the solvation thermodynamic potentials into direct solute-solvent interactions and restructuring of the hydration shell and analyzed the relative contributions of electrostatic and nonpolar interactions to the solvation thermodynamics.
