Estimation of the critical behavior in an active colloidal system with Vicsek-like interactions

Anomalous Self-Organization in Active Piles

Inspired by recent observations on active self-organized critical (SOC) systems, we designed an active pile (or ant pile) model with two ingredients: beyond-threshold toppling and under-threshold active motions. By including the latter component, we were able to replace the typical power-law distribution for geometric observables with a stretched exponential fat-tailed distribution, where the exponent and decay rate are dependent on the activity's strength (ζ). This observation helped us to uncover a hidden connection between active SOC systems and α-stable Levy systems. We demonstrate that one can partially sweep α-stable Levy distributions by changing ζ. The system undergoes a crossover towards Bak-Tang-Weisenfeld (BTW) sandpiles with a power-law behavior (SOC fixed point) below a crossover point ζ<ζ*≈0.1.

Phase behavior and dynamics in a colloid-polymer mixture under spherical confinement

From studies via molecular dynamics simulations, we report results on structure and dynamics in mixtures of active colloids and passive polymers that are confined inside a spherical container with a repulsive boundary. All interactions in the fully passive limit are chosen in such a way that in equilibrium coexistence between colloid-rich and polymer-rich phases occurs. For most part of the studies the chosen compositions give rise to Janus-like structure: nearly one side of the sphere is occupied by the colloids and the rest by the polymers. This partially wet situation mimics approximately a neutral wall in the fully passive scenario. Following the introduction of a velocity-aligning activity to the colloids, the shape of the polymer-rich domain changes to that of an ellipsoid, around the long axis of which the colloid-rich domain attains a macroscopic angular momentum. In the steady state, the orientation of this axis evolves via diffusion, magnitude of which depends upon the strength of activity, but only weakly.

Critical behavior in active lattice models of motility-induced phase separation

Lattice models allow for a computationally efficient investigation of motility-induced phase separation (MIPS) compared to off-lattice systems. Simulations are less demanding, and thus, bigger systems can be accessed with higher accuracy and better statistics. In equilibrium, lattice and off-lattice models with comparable interactions belong to the same universality class. Whether concepts of universality also hold for active particles is still a controversial and open question. Here, we examine two recently proposed active lattice systems that undergo MIPS and investigate numerically their critical behavior. In particular, we examine the claim that these systems and MIPS in general belong to the Ising universality class. We also take a more detailed look on the influence and role of rotational diffusion and active velocity in these systems.

Nonequilibrium phase transition in an Ising model without detailed balance

We study a two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model in which spins are updated using modified versions of the Metropolis and Glauber algorithms. These update rules do not obey the detailed balance condition. The steady-state behavior of the model is studied using molecular field theory and Monte Carlo simulations. This model is found to exhibit a nonequilibrium phase transition from a "paramagnetic" state with zero magnetization to a "ferromagnetic" state with nonzero magnetization as the variable that plays the role of temperature in the spin updates is decreased. From detailed Monte Carlo simulations using the modified Metropolis algorithm, we demonstrate explicitly the nonequilibrium nature of the transition and show that it cannot be described as an equilibrium transition with an effective temperature different from the temperature used in the spin updates. The critical exponents that characterize the singular behavior near this continuous phase transition are calculated from finite size scaling of specific heat, magnetization, susceptibility, and correlation length. We find that the values of these exponents are the same (within error bars) as those of the equilibrium Ising model in two dimensions.

Relaxation in a phase-separating two-dimensional active matter system with alignment interaction

Via computer simulations, we study kinetics of pattern formation in a two-dimensional active matter system. Self-propulsion in our model is incorporated via the Vicsek-like activity, i.e., particles have the tendency of aligning their velocities with the average directions of motion of their neighbors. In addition to this dynamic or active interaction, there exists passive inter-particle interaction in the model for which we have chosen the standard Lennard-Jones form. Following quenches of homogeneous configurations to a point deep inside the region of coexistence between high and low density phases, as the systems exhibit formation and evolution of particle-rich clusters, we investigate properties related to the morphology, growth, and aging. A focus of our study is on the understanding of the effects of structure on growth and aging. To quantify the latter, we use the two-time order-parameter autocorrelation function. This correlation, as well as the growth, is observed to follow power-law time dependence, qualitatively similar to the scaling behavior reported for passive systems. The values of the exponents have been estimated and discussed by comparing with the previously obtained numbers for other dimensions as well as with the new results for the passive limit of the considered model. We have also presented results on the effects of temperature on the activity mediated phase separation.

Otherwise identical particles with differing, fixed speeds demix under time-reversible dynamics

In recent years situations where elsewise identical particles demix when different degrees of freedom do not thermalize have become a research focus in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. The majority of these models are formulated in the context of active particles, but the phenomenon also occurs for particles without driving. All the models studied so far share the property that they do not obey microscopic reversibility, and it may be thought that this is a necessary condition for such demixing to occur. We show here that such a demixing transition also occurs in a mixture of otherwise identical particles moving at two fixed but different speeds according to a time-reversible quasi-Newtonian dynamics. The mechanical instability underlying this behavior is generated by the lack of thermalization between the two subsystems, which is shared by all systems showing this behavior.

Additivity and density fluctuations in Vicsek-like models of self-propelled particles

We study coarse-grained density fluctuations in the disordered phase of the paradigmatic Vicsek-like models of self-propelled particles with alignment interactions and random self-propulsion velocities. By numerically integrating a fluctuation-response relation-the direct consequence of an additivity property-we compute logarithm of the large-deviation probabilities of the coarse-grained subsystem density, while the system is in the disordered fluid phase with vanishing macroscopic velocity. The large-deviation probabilities, computed within additivity, agree remarkably well with that obtained from direct microscopic simulations of the models. Our results provide evidence of the existence of an equilibriumlike chemical potential, which governs the coarse-grained density fluctuations in the Vicsek-like models. Moreover, comparison of the particle-number fluctuations among several self-propelled particle systems suggests a common mechanism through which the number fluctuations arise in such systems.

Statistical mechanics of transport processes in active fluids: Equations of hydrodynamics

The equations of hydrodynamics including mass, linear momentum, angular momentum, and energy are derived by coarse-graining the microscopic equations of motion for systems consisting of rotary dumbbells driven by internal torques. In deriving the balance of linear momentum, we find that the symmetry of the stress tensor is broken due to the presence of non-zero torques on individual particles. The broken symmetry of the stress tensor induces internal spin in the fluid and leads us to consider the balance of internal angular momentum in addition to the usual moment of momentum. In the absence of spin, the moment of momentum is the same as the total angular momentum. In deriving the form of the balance of total angular momentum, we find the microscopic expressions for the couple stress tensor that drives the spin field. We show that the couple stress contains contributions from both intermolecular interactions and the active forces. The presence of spin leads to the idea of balance of moment of inertia due to the constant exchange of particles in a small neighborhood around a macroscopic point. We derive the associated balance of moment of inertia at the macroscale and identify the moment of inertia flux that induces its transport. Finally, we obtain the balances of total and internal energy of the active fluid and identify the sources of heat and heat fluxes in the system.
