Toward a better understanding of dielectric responses of van der Waals liquids: The role of chemical structures

Experimental examination of dipole-dipole cross-correlations by dielectric spectroscopy, depolarized dynamic light scattering, and computer simulations of molecular dynamics

The contribution of cross- and self-correlations to the dielectric and light-scattering spectra of supercooled polar glass formers has recently become a most challenging problem. Herein, we employ dielectric spectroscopy, depolarized dynamic light scattering (DDLS), and rheology to thoroughly examine the dynamics of van der Waals liquid 1,2-Diphenylvinylene. Carbonate (DVC), which is a polar counterpart of canonical glass former ortho-Terphenyl (OTP). We show that the light-scattering data correspond well with the dielectric permittivity function over a wide T range. This pattern is very different from the peaks' separation ω_{max}^{DDLS}/ω_{max}^{BDS}=3.7 reported recently for tributyl phosphate (TBP), despite the same dielectric characteristics of these two glass formers (β_{KWW}=0.75, Δɛ=20 for both TBP and DVC; KWW stands for Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts). This indicates different influence of orientational correlations in both methods for these two systems. We also show the results of the computer simulations of the model, polar molecules, which clearly indicate that the contribution of the cross-term to the correlation function probed in the DDLS experiment can be significant.

Fast vs slow physical aging of a glass forming liquid

Using electric fields to initiate the process of physical aging has facilitated measurements of structural recovery dynamics on the time scale of milliseconds. This, however, complicates the interesting comparison with aging processes due to a temperature jump, as these are significantly slower. This study takes a step toward comparing the results of field and temperature perturbations by providing data on field-induced structural recovery of vinyl ethylene carbonate at two different time scales: 1.0 ms at 181 K and 33 s at 169 K, i.e., 4.5 decades apart. It is found that structural recovery is a factor of two slower than structural relaxation in equilibrium, with the latter determined via dielectric relaxation in the limit of linear response. The relation between recovery and relaxation dynamics remains temperature invariant across the present experimental range.

New Insights from Nonequilibrium Kinetics Studies on Highly Polar S-Methoxy-PC Infiltrated into Pores

Herein, the annealing of highly polar (S)-(-)-4-methoxymethyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-one (S-methoxy-PC) within alumina and silica porous membranes characterized by different pore diameters was studied by means of dielectric spectroscopy. We found a significant slowing down of the structural dynamics of confined S-methoxy-PC with annealing time below and, surprisingly, also above the glass transition temperatures of the interfacial layer, T_{g,interfacial}. Furthermore, unexpectedly, a change in the slope of temperature dependencies of the characteristic time scale of this process τ_anneal, at T_{g,interfacial} for all confined samples, was reported. By modeling τ_anneal(T), we noted that the observed enormous variation of τ_anneal results from a decrease of the pore radius due to the vitrification of the interfacial molecules. This indicates that the enhanced dynamics of confined materials upon cooling is mainly controlled by the interfacial molecules.

Ion-Dipole Interaction Regulation Enables High-Performance Single-Ion Polymer Conductors for Solid-State Batteries

Solid polymer electrolytes with large ionic conductivity, high ionic transference number, and good interfacial compatibility with electrodes are highly desired for solid-state batteries. However, unwanted polarizations and side reactions occurring in traditional dual-ion polymer conductors hinder their practical applications. Here, single-ion polymer conductors (SIPCs) with exceptional selectivity for Li-ion conduction (Li-ion transference number up to 0.93), high room-temperature ionic conductivity of about 10^-4 S cm^-1 , and a wide electrochemical stability window (>4.5 V, vs Li/Li⁺ ) are prepared by precisely regulating the ion-dipole interactions between Li⁺ and carbonyl/cyano groups. The resulting SIPCs show an excellent electrochemical stability with Li metal during long-term cycling at room temperature and 60 °C. LiFePO₄ -based solid-state cells containing the SIPCs exhibit good rate and cycling performance in a wide temperature range from -20 to 90 °C. By the same way of ion-dipole interaction regulation, sodium- and potassium-based SIPCs with both high ionic conductivity and high cationic transference numbers are also prepared. The findings in this work provide guidance for the development of high-performance SIPCs and other metal-ion systems beyond Li⁺ .

Comparative analysis of dielectric, shear mechanical and light scattering response functions in polar supercooled liquids

The studies of molecular dynamics in the vicinity of liquid–glass transition are an essential part of condensed matter physics. Various experimental techniques are usually applied to understand different aspects of molecular motions, i.e., nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS), mechanical shear relaxation (MR), and dielectric spectroscopy (DS). Universal behavior of molecular dynamics, reflected in the invariant distribution of relaxation times for different polar and weekly polar glass-formers, has been recently found when probed by NMR, PCS, and MR techniques. On the other hand, the narrow dielectric permittivity function ε*(f) of polar materials has been rationalized by postulating that it is a superposition of a Debye-like peak and a broader structural relaxation found in NMR, PCS, and MR. Herein, we show that dielectric permittivity representation ε*(f) reveals details of molecular motions being undetectable in the other experimental methods. Herein we propose a way to resolve this problem. First, we point out an unresolved Johari–Goldstein (JG) β-relaxation is present nearby the α-relaxation in these polar glass-formers. The dielectric relaxation strength of the JG β-relaxation is sufficiently weak compared to the α-relaxation so that the narrow dielectric frequency dispersion faithfully represents the dynamic heterogeneity and cooperativity of the α-relaxation. However, when the other techniques are used to probe the same polar glass-former, there is reduction of relaxation strength of α-relaxation relative to that of the JG β relaxation as well as their separation. Consequently the α relaxation appears broader in frequency dispersion when observed by PCS, NMR and MR instead of DS. The explanation is supported by showing that the quasi-universal broadened α relaxation in PCS, NMR and MR is captured by the electric modulus M*(f) = 1/ε*(f) representation of the dielectric measurements of polar and weakly polar glass-formers, and also M*(f) compares favorably with the mechanical shear modulus data G*(f).

Local structure and molecular dynamics of highly polar propylene carbonate derivative infiltrated within alumina and silica porous templates

Herein, we examined the effect of finite size and wettability on the structural dynamics and the molecular arrangement of the propylene carbonate derivative, (S)-(-)-4-methoxymethyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-one (assigned as s-methoxy-PC), incorporated into alumina and silica porous templates of pore diameters d = 4 nm-10 nm using Raman and broadband dielectric spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and x-ray diffraction. It was demonstrated that only subtle changes in the molecular organization and short-range order of confined s-methoxy-PC molecules were detected. Yet, a significant deviation of the structural dynamics and depression of the glass transition temperatures, T_g, was found for all confined samples with respect to the bulk material. Interestingly, these changes correlate with neither the finite size effects nor the interfacial energy but seem to vary with wettability, generally. Nevertheless, for s-methoxy-PC infiltrated into native (more hydrophilic) and modified (more hydrophobic) silica templates of the same nanochannel size (d = 4 nm), a change in the dynamics and T_g was negligible despite a significant variation in wettability. These results indicated that although wettability might be a suitable variable to predict alteration of the structural dynamics and depression of the glass transition temperature, other factors, i.e., surface roughness and the density packing, might also have a strong contribution to the observed confinement effects.

AC versus DC field effects on the crystallization behavior of a molecular liquid, vinyl ethylene carbonate (VEC)

Using electric fields to control crystallization processes shows a strong potential for improving pharmaceuticals, but these field effects are not yet fully explored nor understood. This study investigates how the application of alternating high electric fields can influence the crystallization kinetics as well as the final crystal product, with a focus on the possible difference between alternating (ac) and static (dc) type fields applied to vinyl ethylene carbonate (VEC), a molecular system with field-induced polymorphism. Relative to ac fields, static electric fields lead to more severe accumulation of impurity ions near the electrodes, possibly affecting the crystallization behavior. By tuning the amplitude and frequency of the electric field, the crystallization rate can be modified, and the crystallization outcome can be guided to form one or the other polymorph with high purity, analogous to the findings derived from dc field experiments. Additionally, it is found that low-frequency ac fields reduce the induction time, promote nucleation near Tg, and affect crystallization rates as in the dc case. Consistency is also observed for the Avrami parameters n derived from ac and dc field experiments. Therefore, it appears safe to conclude that ac fields can replicate the effects seen using dc fields, which is advantageous for samples with mobile charges and the resulting conductivity.

Dynamic Properties of Supercooled Chlorinated Biphenyls

A study of the dynamics of a series of biphenyl compounds having varying chlorine levels was carried out. Increasing the chlorine content increases the glass transition temperature and makes the dynamics substantially more sensitive to density changes. Nonetheless, in the vicinity of their respective glass transitions, the different liquids display very similar extents of dynamic correlation and dynamic heterogeneity. The slight narrowing of the relaxation peak with increasing chlorine follows the general trend of the effect of increasing molecular polarity. This relationship between the peak breadth and dipole moment was reproduced in molecular dynamics simulations of a simplified model of the Aroclor molecule.

New paradigm of dielectric relaxation of sizable and rigid molecular glass formers

In this Rapid Communication we report the unusual dynamics of planar, rigid, and anisotropy glass-forming molecules of unusually large size by dielectric spectroscopy by using two examples. The size of the molecules is much larger than the dipolar moiety located at the end of the longer axis of each molecule. The observed dynamics deviates strongly from the anticorrelation between β_{KWW} (fractional exponent of the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts function) and dielectric strength, Δɛ(T_{g}), established generally for small van der Waals molecular glass formers. Moreover, the dynamics of the two large molecules differ greatly, albeit the difference is the dipole moment being orthogonal or parallel to the longer axis of the molecules. The drastic variation in dielectric response of the two materials coming from different portions of the structural α-relaxation spectrum is probed by the dipole. Thus, the new behavior opens up a new research area of the dynamics and thermodynamics of nonpolymeric sizable molecules, the dielectric response of which can be varied by the design of the dipole moiety.

Peculiar relaxation dynamics of propylene carbonate derivatives

The aim of this work is to analyze in detail the effect of the alkyl chain length on the dynamics of glass-forming propylene carbonate (PC) derivatives. Examined samples are low-molecular weight derivatives of the PC structure, i.e., the 4-alkyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-one series, modified by changing the alkyl substituent from methyl to hexyl. The molecular dynamics (MD) has been analyzed based on experimental data collected from differential scanning calorimetry, broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry measurements as well as MD simulations. The dielectric results show in samples with the propyl- or longer carbon chain the presence of slow Debye-like relaxation with features similar to those found in associative materials. Both XRD and MD reveal differences in the intermolecular structure between PC and 4-butyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-one liquids. Moreover, MD shows that the probability of finding one terminal carbon atom of the side chain of BPC in the vicinity of another carbon atom of the same type is much higher than in the case of PC. It suggests that there is a preference for longer hydrocarbon chains to set themselves close to each other. Consequently, the observed slow-mode peak may be caused by movement of aggregates maintained by van der Waals interactions. Reported herein, findings provide a new insight into the molecular origin of Debye-like relaxation.

Unusual dielectric response of 4-methyl-1,3-dioxolane derivatives

In this paper, we applied broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) to investigate the molecular dynamics of three 4-methyl-1,3-dioxolane derivatives (MD) whose chemical structures differ in the length of non-polar alkyl side chains.

Formation of new polymorphs and control of crystallization in molecular glass-formers by electric field

We show that an electric field is able to modify the crystallization tendency of a low-molecular weight glass-forming liquid.
