Using valence bond methods to estimate intramolecular basis set superposition errors

π-π stacking assisted regioselectivity regulation in palladium-catalyzed cyclization reactions: a theoretical study

The regulation of regioselectivity is an objective often pursued by organic chemists, and the comprehension of its mechanisms is crucial for devising efficient synthetic pathways. In this report, we conducted theoretical calculations to explore the regioselectivity regulatory mechanisms of two palladium-catalyzed cyclization reactions. In these cyclization reactions, manipulating the structural differences in the reaction substrates leads to the formation of distinct products. A detailed reaction mechanism and reactivity profile for this reaction were revealed. Furthermore, a π-π stacking assisted regioselectivity regulatory mechanism was proven by distortion-interaction energy analysis and noncovalent interaction calculations. The calculated results presented herein provide a theoretical guide for further experimental investigations of regioselectivity regulation.

Basis Set Superposition Errors Are Partly Basis Set Imbalances

When calculating fragment interaction energies by electronic structure methods employing medium-sized atom-centered basis sets, it is often observed that the effect is systematically overestimated. The common interpretation is that the systematic error arises because the basis set for the complex is more complete than for the isolated fragments, and this is denoted basis set superposition errors. It has been observed, however, that the interaction energy in some cases is underestimated, which defies the interpretation in terms of basis set completeness, and instead suggests that the effect partly is due to basis set imbalance. The imbalance can be removed by explicit optimization of the basis sets for each structure, and it is shown that this to a significant extent reduces the systematic overestimation attributed to basis set superposition error.

Quantifying Intramolecular Basis Set Superposition Errors

We show that medium-sized Gaussian basis sets lead to significant intramolecular basis set superposition errors at Hartree-Fock and density functional levels of theory, with artificial stabilization of compact over extended conformations for a 186 atom deca-peptide. Errors of ∼80 and ∼10 kJ/mol are observed, with polarized double zeta and polarized triple zeta quality basis sets, respectively. Two different procedures for taking the basis set superposition error into account are tested. While both reduce the error, it appears that polarized quadruple zeta basis sets are required to reduce the error below a few kJ/mol. Alternatively, the basis set superposition error can be eliminated using multiresolution methods based on Multiwavelets.

Energy decomposition analysis method for metallic systems

In this work, we present the first extension of an energy decomposition analysis (EDA) method to metallic systems. We extend the theory of our Hybrid Absolutely Localized Molecular Orbitals (HALMO) EDA to take into account that molecular orbitals in metallic systems are partially occupied, which is done by weighted orthogonalization (WO) of the molecular orbitals using their associated fractional occupancies as weights in the construction of the projection operators. These operators are needed for the self-consistent field for molecular interaction (SCF MI) computation of the polarization-energy contribution to the interaction. The method gives more weight to orbitals that have higher occupancies and treats each fragment as metallic. The resulting HALMO EDA for metallic systems naturally reduces to the insulator version and produces the same results when applied to an insulating system. We present the theory and implementation of our new approach, and we demonstrate it with sample calculations of relevance to industrial materials. This work provides a new EDA paradigm and tool for the study and analysis of interactions in metallic systems within large-scale DFT calculations.

Subtle hydrogen bonds: benchmarking with OH stretching fundamentals of vicinal diols in the gas phase

The theoretical description of spectral signatures for weakly bound hydrogen contacts between alcohol groups is challenging and remains poorly characterised. By combining Raman jet spectroscopy with appropriately scaled harmonic DFT predictions and relaxation path analyses for 16 vicinal diols (ethylene glycol (ethane-1,2-diol), propane-1,2-diol, 3,3,3-trifluoro-propane-1,2-diol, rac-butane-2,3-diol, 2-methyl-propane-1,2-diol, 2-methyl-butane-2,3-diol, pinacol (2,3-dimethyl-butane-2,3-diol), 3-butene-1,2-diol, 1-phenyl-ethane-1,2-diol, trans-cyclobutane-1,2-diol, trans-cyclopentane-1,2-diol, trans-cyclohexane-1,2-diol, trans-cycloheptane-1,2-diol, cis-cyclohexane-1,2-diol, 1-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-cyclopentanol and [1,1'-bicyclopentyl]-1,1'-diol), 69 conformational assignments become possible in a two-tier approach with a 5 diol training and an 11 diol test set. The latter reveals systematic deviations for ring strain and secondary π interactions, but otherwise a remarkably robust correction and correlation model based on hybrid DFT with a minimally augmented triple-zeta basis set is obtained, whereas GGA functionals perform significantly worse. Raw experimental data in the 3560-3700 cm^-1 wavenumber range as well as computed geometries of all conformations invite further vibrational and structural benchmarking at the onset of hydrogen bonding. Beyond this diol-probed threshold, the accurate prediction of hydrogen bond induced shifts of different magnitudes remains one of the challenges for DFT functionals.
