Miscibility and exchange chemical potential of ring polymers in symmetric ring-ring blends

Generally, differences of polymer topologies may affect polymer miscibility even with the same repeated units. In this study, the topological effect of ring polymers on miscibility was investigated by comparing symmetric ring-ring and linear-linear polymer blends. To elucidate the topological effect of ring polymers on mixing free energy, the exchange chemical potential of binary blends was numerically evaluated as a function of composition ϕ by performing semi-grand canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations of a bead-spring model. For ring-ring blends, an effective miscibility parameter was evaluated by comparing the exchange chemical potential with that of the Flory-Huggins model for linear-linear polymer blends. It was confirmed that in the mixed states satisfying χN > 0, ring-ring blends are more miscible and stable than the linear-linear blends with the same molecular weight. Furthermore, we investigated finite molecular weight dependence on the miscibility parameter, which reflected the statistical probability of interchain interactions in the blends. The simulation results revealed that the molecular weight dependence on the miscibility parameter was smaller in ring-ring blends. The effect of the ring polymers on miscibility was verified to be consistent with the change in the interchain radial distribution function. In ring-ring blends, it was indicated that the topology affected miscibility by reducing the effect of the direct interaction between the components of the blends.

Investigation of Ring and Star Polymers in Confined Geometries: Theory and Simulations

The calculations of the dimensionless layer monomer density profiles for a dilute solution of phantom ideal ring polymer chains and star polymers with f=4 arms in a Θ-solvent confined in a slit geometry of two parallel walls with repulsive surfaces and for the mixed case of one repulsive and the other inert surface were performed. Furthermore, taking into account the Derjaguin approximation, the dimensionless layer monomer density profiles for phantom ideal ring polymer chains and star polymers immersed in a solution of big colloidal particles with different adsorbing or repelling properties with respect to polymers were calculated. The density-force relation for the above-mentioned cases was analyzed, and the universal amplitude ratio B was obtained. Taking into account the small sphere expansion allowed obtaining the monomer density profiles for a dilute solution of phantom ideal ring polymers immersed in a solution of small spherical particles, or nano-particles of finite size, which are much smaller than the polymer size and the other characteristic mesoscopic length of the system. We performed molecular dynamics simulations of a dilute solution of linear, ring, and star-shaped polymers with N=300, 300 (360), and 1201 (4 × 300 + 1-star polymer with four arms) beads accordingly. The obtained analytical and numerical results for phantom ring and star polymers are compared with the results for linear polymer chains in confined geometries.

Dimensions of catenated ring polymers in dilute solution studied by Monte-Carlo simulation

Interaction between two simple ring chains catenated in a molecule was estimated by a Metropolis Monte Carlo simulation, and the result was compared with a model. We employed catenated ring chains in this study; they were composed of two simple ring chains, and the topology was kept as 2 1 2 . The temperature dependence of the distance between two ring chains in a molecule was discussed using Flory's scaling exponent, ν, in R _g ∝ N ^ν , where R _g is the radius of gyration of a simple ring chain catenated in a molecule. In the simulation, the topology of the component rings and their links were kept because chain crossing was prohibited. The excluded volume of chains was screened by the attractive force between polymer segments, and the strength of the attractive force depends on temperature, T. At the θ temperature for trivial ring polymers, where the condition ν = 1/2 holds, their trajectories can be described statistically as a closed-random walk, i.e., a closed-phantom chain model. The temperature at which interaction between trivial ring polymers, i.e., inter-molecular interaction, is repulsive; trivial ring polymer molecules show the excluded volume generated with keeping their own topology, 0₁. A catenated molecule is composed of two simple rings, and so forth a component ring can be affected by the existence of the counterpart rings. Under that temperature, the mean-square distance between two rings in a catenated molecule, ⟨L ²⟩, was obtained and compared with that of the simple model composed of two circles in three-dimensions, where interaction between circles is set as zero. It has been found that the simulated ⟨L ²⟩ values were constantly larger than those of the model owing to the excluded volume of rings in a molecule.
