Driving spin transition at interface: Role of adsorption configurations

Surface-Induced Electronic and Vibrational Level Shifting of [Fe(py)2bpym(NCS)2] on Al(100)

It is essential that one understands how the surface degrees of freedom influence molecular spin switching to successfully integrate spin crossover (SCO) molecules into devices. This study uses density functional theory calculations to investigate how spin state energetics and molecular vibrations change in a Fe(II) SCO compound named [Fe(py)2bpym(NCS)2] when deposited on an Al(100) surface. The calculations consider an environment-dependent U to assess the local Coulomb correlation of 3d electrons. The results show that the adsorption configurations heavily affect the spin state splitting, which increases by 10-40 kJmol-1 on the surface, and this is detrimental to spin conversion. This effect is due to the surface binding energy variation across the spin transition. The preference for the low-spin state originates partly from the strong correlation effect. Furthermore, the surface environment constrains the vibrational entropy difference, which decreases by 8-17 Jmol-1K-1 (at 300 K) and leads to higher critical temperatures. These results suggest that the electronic energy splitting and vibrational level shifting are suitable features for characterizing the spin transition process on surfaces, and they can provide access to high-throughput screening of spin crossover devices.

How the Donor/Acceptor Spin States Affect the Electronic Couplings in Molecular Charge-Transfer Processes?

The electronic coupling matrix element H_AB is an essential ingredient of most electron-transfer theories. H_AB depends on the overlap between donor and acceptor wave functions and is affected by the involved states’ spin. We classify the spin-state effects into three categories: orbital occupation, spin-dependent electron density, and density delocalization. The orbital occupancy reflects the diverse chemical nature and reactivity of the spin states of interest. The effect of spin-dependent density is related to a more compact electron density cloud at lower spin states due to decreased exchange interactions between electrons. Density delocalization is strongly connected with the covalency concept that increases the spatial extent of the diabatic state’s electron density in specific directions. We illustrate these effects with high-level ab initio calculations on model direct donor–acceptor systems relevant to metal oxide materials and biological electron transfer. Obtained results can be used to benchmark existing methods for H_AB calculations in complicated cases such as spin-crossover materials or antiferromagnetically coupled systems.

Spin-state energetics of metallocenes: How do best wave function and density functional theory results compare with the experimental data?

We benchmark the accuracy of quantum-chemical methods, including wave function theory methods [coupled cluster theory at the CCSD(T) level, multiconfigurational perturbation-theory (CASPT2, NEVPT2) and internally contracted multireference configuration interaction (MRCI)] and 30 density functional theory (DFT) approximations, in reproducing the spin-state splittings of metallocenes. The reference values of the electronic energy differences are derived from the experimental spin-crossover enthalpy for manganocene and the spectral data of singlet-triplet transitions for ruthenocene, ferrocene, and cobaltocenium. For ferrocene and cobaltocenium we revise the previous experimental interpretations regarding the lowest triplet energy; our argument is based on the comparison with the lowest singlet excitation energy and herein reported, carefully determined absorption spectrum of ferrocene. When deriving vertical energies from the experimental band maxima, we go beyond the routine vertical energy approximation by introducing vibronic corrections based on simulated vibrational envelopes. The benchmarking result confirms the high accuracy of the CCSD(T) method (in particular, for UCCSD(T) based on Hartree-Fock orbitals we find for our dataset: maximum error 0.12 eV, weighted mean absolute error 0.07 eV, weighted mean signed error 0.01 eV). The high accuracy of the single-reference method is corroborated by the analysis of a multiconfigurational character of the complete active space wave function for the triplet state of ferrocene. On the DFT side, our results confirm the non-universality problem with approximate functionals. The present study is an important step toward establishing an extensive and representative benchmark set of experiment-derived spin-state energetics for transition metal complexes.

Magneto-elastic properties of a spin crossover membrane deposited on a deformable substrate

Spin-crossover (SCO) solids have been studied for several years due to their fascinating physical properties and their potential applications as optical switches and reversible high-density memories for information storage. Through this article, we will examine in details the effects of substrate's lattice parameters, on a deformable spin crossover membrane, simulated using an electro-elastic model taking into account the volume change at the transition. The molecules of the membrane can be either in the low spin state (LS) or the high spin state (HS), while those of the substrate are electronically neutral. Magnetic properties of the SCO membrane and the pressure distribution as a function of the lattice parameter of the substrate have been investigated. We demonstrated that the thermally induced first-order spin transition is significantly affected by the structural properties of the substrate, where a rise in the lattice parameter of the latter lowers the transition temperature and reduces the width of the thermal hysteresis loop. The investigations on the spatiotemporal aspects of the spin transition in the membrane demonstrates that the nucleation and growth processes are sensitive to the structural properties of the elastic misfit between the substrate and the SCO membrane.

Electric-field control of spin orientation of manganocene: An insight into molecule-substrate interactions

The manipulation of spin orientations in molecular nanomagnets assembled on surfaces is essential for the development of memory devices. These properties are dominated by interactions with the substrate. Here, we show that individual manganocene molecules deposited on Cu(111) exhibit different easy magnetization directions in an applied electric-field due to different contact geometries. Using Hubbard-U corrected density-functional theory to describe strong correlation effects and a non-self-consistent diagonalization method to treat spin-orbit coupling, we demonstrate that the field-induced spin reorientation transition occurs in the standing-up molecule in both high-spin (HS) and low-spin states, while the transition only occurs in the HS state for the flat-lying molecule. We propose plausible mechanisms in terms of charge polarization at the interface as well as modifications of the electronic states near the Fermi level E _F. We show that the molecule largely preserves its arrangement of 3d orbitals in the standing configuration due to the "insulating layer" (bridging ligand), whereas direct contact of the Mn ion with the substrate in the lying configuration induces an orbital degeneracy around E _F, thus preventing the electrical modulation of magnetic anisotropies.
