Quantitative Aspects of Gas-Phase Metal Ion Chemistry: Conservation of Spin, Participation of f Orbitals, and C-H Activation and C-C Coupling

In this Featured Article, I reflect on over 40 years of guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry (GIBMS) studies involving atomic metal cations and their clusters throughout the periodic table. Studies that have considered the role of spin conservation (or lack thereof) are a primary focus with a quantitative assessment of the effects examined. A need for state-specific studies of heavier elements is noted, as is a more quantitative assessment of spin-orbit interactions in reactivity. Because GIBMS experiments explicitly evaluate the kinetic energy dependence of reactions over a wide range, several interesting and unusual observations are highlighted. More detailed studies of such unusual reaction events would be welcome. Activation of C-H bonds and ensuing C-C coupling events are reviewed, with future work encouraged. Finally, studies of lanthanides and actinides are examined with an eye on understanding the role of f orbitals in the chemistry, both as participants (or not) in the bonding and as sources/sinks of electron density. This area seems to be ripe for more quantitative experiments.

Bond dissociation energies of lanthanide sulfides and selenides

Resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy has been employed to observe sharp predissociation thresholds in the spectra of the lanthanide sulfides and selenides for the 4f metals Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Lu. As these molecules possess a large density of electronic states near the ground separated atom limit, these predissociation thresholds are argued to coincide with the true 0 K bond dissociation energies (BDEs). This is because spin-orbit and nonadiabatic couplings among these states allow the molecules to predissociate rapidly when the BDE is reached or exceeded. The measured BDEs, in eV, are as follows: 5.230(3) (PrS), 4.820(3) (NdS), 4.011(17) (SmS), 3.811(8) (EuS), 5.282(5) (GdS), 5.292(3) (TbS), 4.298(3) (DyS), 4.251(3) (HoS), 4.262(3) (ErS), 5.189(3) (LuS), 4.496(3) (PrSe), 4.099(3) (NdSe), 3.495(17) (SmSe), 3.319(3) (EuSe), 4.606(3) (GdSe), 4.600(6) (TbSe), 3.602(3) (DySe), 3.562(3) (HoSe), 3.587(3) (ErSe), and 4.599(6) (LuSe). Through the use of thermochemical cycles, the 0 K gaseous heat of formation, Δ_fH_0K ^○, is reported for each molecule. A threshold corresponding to the onset of two-photon ionization in EuSe was also observed, providing the ionization energy of EuSe as 6.483(10) eV. Through a thermochemical cycle and the above reported BDE of the neutral EuSe molecule, the BDE for the Eu⁺-Se cation was also determined as D₀(Eu⁺-Se) = 2.506(10) eV. Bonding trends of the lanthanide sulfides and selenides are discussed. Our previous observation that the transition metal sulfides are 15.6% more strongly bound than the corresponding selenides continues to hold true for the lanthanides as well.

All-electron relativistic spin-orbit multireference computation to elucidate the ground state of CeH

The all-electron relativistic spin-orbit multiconfiguration/multireference computations with the Sapporo basis sets were carried out to elucidate the characters of the low-lying quasi-degenerate electronic states for the CeH diatomic molecule. The present computations predict the ground state of CeH to be a pure quartet state of 4f15d1(5dσ-H1s)26s1 configuration (Ω = 3.5). The first excited state (Ω = 2.5) shows a doublet dominant of 4f1(5dσ-H1s)26s2 configuration at a short bond length while it changes to a quartet dominant at a long bond length. The Ce-H stretching fundamental frequency was calculated to be 1345 cm-1 in the ground state, which is in good agreement with the experimental value, 1271 cm-1, measured by a matrix-isolation technique.

Lanthanides as Catalysts: Guided Ion Beam and Theoretical Studies of Sm+ + COS

Reactions of samarium cations with carbonyl sulfide are examined using a guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometer and a variable temperature selected ion flow tube apparatus. Formation of SmS⁺ + CO is observed in both instruments with a kinetic energy and temperature dependence demonstrating a barrierless reaction occurring with an efficiency of 26 ± 9%. Formation of SmO⁺ + CS is also observed at high kinetic energies and exhibits a threshold determined as 2.81 ± 0.32 eV, substantially higher than expected from known thermochemistry. The potential energy surfaces for these reactions along sextet and octet spin surfaces are also examined theoretically at the MP2 and CCSD(T) levels. The observed barrier for oxidation is shown to likely correspond to the energy of the crossing between surfaces corresponding to the ground state electronic configuration of Sm⁺ (⁸F,4f⁶6s¹) and an excited surface having two electrons in the valence space (excluding 4f), which are needed to form the strong SmO⁺ bond. In contrast, the S-CO bond is activated much more readily because this crossing occurs at much lower energies. This result is attributed to the much weaker S-CO bond energy as well as the ability of sulfur to bind effectively at different angles. Although both reactions are spin-forbidden, evidence for a more efficient spin-allowed process is also observed in the SmS⁺ + CO cross section.
