Simulations of water nano-confined between corrugated planes

Insight into the Structure and Dynamics of Ethanol-Water Binary Mixture Confined in Nanochannel by Mica and Graphene

Investigation of the structural properties and dynamics of fluid mixture confined in nanochannels has become an essential topic in many fields due to potential applications in nanofluidic devices and biological systems. Here, we study the ethanol-water blend confined between the mica and single or multilayer graphene for different slit pore widths, ethanol content, and temperatures. Our molecular dynamics simulation indicates that water molecules are adsorbed at the mica surface, while ethanol molecules prefer to be adsorbed near the graphene surface. We find that distinct layers of ethanol molecules form as the channel width and ethanol content in the mixture are increased. The diffusion of confined ethanol and water molecules depends on the nanopore widths, concentrations, and temperatures. Interestingly, at nanopore widths of 1.0 and 1.3 nm, the mobility of confined ethanol molecules is greater than that of water molecules for all ethanol concentrations. In contrast, at pore width of 0.7 nm, the opposite behavior is observed at lower concentrations of ethanol (x_EtOH = 0.1 and 0.3) in the mixture. Furthermore, the diffusivity of ethanol and water in the mixtures increases with increasing the temperatures. The hydrogen bond and cluster analysis imply the segregation of water molecules near the mica surface, while ethanol molecules are near the opposite pore wall (graphene).

Nanoconfined Fluids: Uniqueness of Water Compared to Other Liquids

Nanoconfinement can drastically change the behavior of liquids, puzzling us with counterintuitive properties. It is relevant in applications, including decontamination and crystallization control. However, it still lacks a systematic analysis for fluids with different bulk properties. Here we address this gap. We compare, by molecular dynamics simulations, three different liquids in a graphene slit pore: (1) A simple fluid, such as argon, described by a Lennard-Jones potential; (2) an anomalous fluid, such as a liquid metal, modeled with an isotropic core-softened potential; and (3) water, the prototypical anomalous liquid, with directional HBs. We study how the slit-pore width affects the structure, thermodynamics, and dynamics of the fluids. All the fluids show similar oscillating properties by changing the pore size. However, their free-energy minima are quite different in nature: (i) are energy-driven for the simple liquid; (ii) are entropy-driven for the isotropic core-softened potential; and (iii) have a changing nature for water. Indeed, for water, the monolayer minimum is entropy driven, at variance with the simple liquid, while the bilayer minimum is energy driven, at variance with the other anomalous liquid. Also, water has a large increase in diffusion for subnm slit pores, becoming faster than bulk. Instead, the other two fluids have diffusion oscillations much smaller than water, slowing down for decreasing slit-pore width. Our results, clarifying that water confined at the subnm scale behaves differently from other (simple or anomalous) fluids under similar confinement, are possibly relevant in nanopores applications, for example, in water purification from contaminants.

Confinement-Controlled Aqueous Chemistry within Nanometric Slit Pores

In this Focus Review, we put the spotlight on very recent insights into the fascinating world of wet chemistry in the realm offered by nanoconfinement of water in mechanically rather rigid and chemically inert planar slit pores wherein only monolayer and bilayer water lamellae can be hosted. We review the effect of confinement on different aspects such as hydrogen bonding, ion diffusion, and charge defect migration of H⁺(aq) and OH^-(aq) in nanoconfined water depending on slit pore width. A particular focus is put on the strongly modulated local dielectric properties as quantified in terms of anisotropic polarization fluctuations across such extremely confined water films and their putative effects on chemical reactions therein. The stunning findings disclosed only recently extend wet chemistry in particular and solvation science in general toward extreme molecular confinement conditions.

Nanoconfined Water within Graphene Slit Pores Adopts Distinct Confinement-Dependent Regimes

In view of the increasing importance of nanoconfined aqueous solutions for various technological applications, it has become necessary to understand how strong confinement affects the properties of water at the level of molecular and even electronic structure. By performing extensive ab initio simulations of two-dimensionally nanoconfined water lamellae between graphene sheets subject to different interlayer spacings, we find new regimes at interlayer distances of 10 Å and less where water can be described neither to behave like interfacial water nor to be bulklike at the level of its H-bonding characteristics and electronic structure properties. It is expected that this finding will offer new opportunities to tune both diffusive and reactive processes taking place in aqueous environments that are strongly confined by chemically inert hard walls.
