USAXS analysis of concentration-dependent self-assembling of polymer-brush-modified nanoparticles in ionic liquid: [I] concentrated-brush regime

Recent advances in synchrotron scattering methods for probing the structure and dynamics of colloids

Recent progress in synchrotron based X-ray scattering methods applied to colloid science is reviewed. An important figure of merit of these techniques is that they enable in situ investigations of colloidal systems under the desired thermophysical and rheological conditions. An ensemble averaged simultaneous structural and dynamical information can be derived albeit in reciprocal space. Significant improvements in X-ray source brilliance and advances in detector technology have overcome some of the limitations in the past. Notably coherent X-ray scattering techniques have become more competitive and they provide complementary information to laboratory based real space methods. For a system with sufficient scattering contrast, size ranges from nm to several μm and time scales down to μs are now amenable to X-ray scattering investigations. A wide variety of sample environments can be combined with scattering experiments further enriching the science that could be pursued by means of advanced X-ray scattering instruments. Some of these recent progresses are illustrated via representative examples. To derive quantitative information from the scattering data, rigorous data analysis or modeling is required. Development of powerful computational tools including the use of artificial intelligence have become the emerging trend.

Spreading Dynamics of a Precursor Film of Ionic Liquid or Water on a Micropatterned Polyelectrolyte Brush Surface

Time evolution of the microscopic wetting velocity of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMI-TFSI) or water on a micrometer-scale line-patterned surface with a poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate) brush and a hydrophobic perfluoroalkyl monolayer was precisely measured by direct observation using optical microscopy and a selective dyeing method over a long period (178 days). When a liquid droplet was placed on the dyed line-patterned brush surface, the liquid penetrated and spread into the polymer brush layer, forming a precursor thin film that extended beyond the macroscopic contact line. The elongation proceeded in two stages by an adiabatic process followed by a diffusive process. The elongation distance X increased with time in proportion to t^2.6 for water and t^0.81 for EMI-TFSI during the adiabatic process. In a diffusive process, the advancing velocity of the precursor film was markedly reduced to be expressed as X ∝ t^0.66 for water and X ∝ t^0.21 for EMI-TFSI, indicating that the diffusive process was affected by the energy dissipation of the wetting system. The high viscosity and the strong molecular interaction of EMI-TFSI with the polymer brush gave a large entropy change during the wetting process to result in a slower spreading velocity.

Application of Synchrotron Radiation X-ray Scattering and Spectroscopy to Soft Matter

Light produced by synchrotron radiation (SR) is much brighter than that produced by conventional laboratory X-ray sources. The photon energy of SR X-ray ranges from soft and tender X-rays to hard X-rays. Moreover, X-rays become element sensitive with decreasing photon energy. By using a wide energy range and high-quality light of SR, different scattering and spectroscopic methods were applied to various soft matters. We present five of our recent studies performed using specific light properties of a synchrotron facility, which are as follows: (1) In situ USAXS study to understand the deformation behavior of colloidal crystals during uniaxial stretching; (2) structure characterization of semiconducting polymer thin films along the film thickness direction by grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering using tender X-rays; (3) X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis of the formation mechanism of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT); (4) soft X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopic analysis of water structure in polyelectrolyte brushes; and (5) X-ray photon correlation spectroscopic analysis of the diffusion behavior of polystyrene-grafted nanoparticles dispersed in a polystyrene matrix.
