Diabatic model for electrochemical hydrogen evolution based on constrained DFT configuration interaction

Competing quantum effects in heavy-atom tunnelling through conical intersections

Thermally activated chemical reactions are typically understood in terms of overcoming potential-energy barriers. However, standard rate theories break down in the presence of a conical intersection (CI) because these processes are inherently nonadiabatic, invalidating the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Moreover, CIs give rise to intricate nuclear quantum effects such as tunnelling and the geometric phase, which are neglected by standard trajectory-based simulations and remain largely unexplored in complex molecular systems. We present new semiclassical transition-state theories based on an extension of golden-rule instanton theory to describe nonadiabatic tunnelling through CIs and thus provide an intuitive picture for the reaction mechanism. We apply the method in conjunction with first-principles electronic-structure calculations to the electron transfer in the bis(methylene)-adamantyl cation. Our study reveals a strong competition between heavy-atom tunnelling and geometric-phase effects.

Sensitivity of Intra- and Intermolecular Interactions of Benzo[h]quinoline from Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics and Electronic Structure Inspection

The O-H...N and O-H...O hydrogen bonds were investigated in 10-hydroxybenzo[h]quinoline (HBQ) and benzo[h]quinoline-2-methylresorcinol complex in vacuo, solvent and crystalline phases. The chosen systems contain analogous donor and acceptor moieties but differently coupled (intra- versus intermolecularly). Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) was employed to shed light onto principle components of interactions responsible for the self-assembly. It was applied to study the dynamics of the hydrogen bonds and vibrational features as well as to provide initial geometries for incorporation of quantum effects and electronic structure studies. The vibrational features were revealed using Fourier transformation of the autocorrelation function of atomic velocity and by inclusion of nuclear quantum effects on the O-H stretching solving vibrational Schrödinger equation a posteriori. The potential of mean force (Pmf) was computed for the whole trajectory to derive the probability density distribution and for the O-H stretching mode from the proton vibrational eigenfunctions and eigenvalues incorporating statistical sampling and nuclear quantum effects. The electronic structure changes of the benzo[h]quinoline-2-methylresorcinol dimer and trimers were studied based on Constrained Density Functional Theory (CDFT) whereas the Electron Localization Function (ELF) method was applied for all systems. It was found that the bridged proton is localized on the donor side in both investigated systems in vacuo. The crystalline phase simulations indicated bridged proton-sharing and transfer events in HBQ. These effects are even more pronounced when nuclear quantization is taken into account, and the quantized Pmf allows the proton to sample the acceptor area more efficiently. The CDFT indicated the charge depletion at the bridged proton for the analyzed dimer and trimers in solvent. The ELF analysis showed the presence of the isolated proton (a signature of the strongest hydrogen bonds) only in some parts of the HBQ crystal simulation. The collected data underline the importance of the intramolecular coupling between the donor and acceptor moieties.

Method for the accurate prediction of electron transfer potentials using an effective absolute potential

A protocol for the accurate computation of electron transfer (ET) potentials from ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) calculations is described. The method relies on experimental pKa values, which can be measured accurately, to compute a computational setup dependent effective absolute potential. The effective absolute potentials calculated using this protocol display strong variations between the different computational setups and deviate in several cases significantly from the "generally accepted" value of 4.28 V. The most accurate estimate, obtained from CCSD(T)/aug-ccpvqz, indicates an absolute potential of 4.14 V for the normal hydrogen electrode (nhe) in water. Using the effective absolute potential in combination with CCSD(T) and a moderately sized basis, we are able to predict ET potentials accurately for a test set of small organic molecules (σ = 0.13 V). Similarly we find the effective absolute potential method to perform equally good or better for all considered DFT functionals compared to using one of the literature values for the absolute potential. For, M06-2X, which comprises the most accurate DFT method, standard deviation of 0.18 V is obtained. This improved performance is a result of using the most appropriate effective absolute potential for a given method.

CP2K: An electronic structure and molecular dynamics software package - Quickstep: Efficient and accurate electronic structure calculations

CP2K is an open source electronic structure and molecular dynamics software package to perform atomistic simulations of solid-state, liquid, molecular, and biological systems. It is especially aimed at massively parallel and linear-scaling electronic structure methods and state-of-the-art ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Excellent performance for electronic structure calculations is achieved using novel algorithms implemented for modern high-performance computing systems. This review revisits the main capabilities of CP2K to perform efficient and accurate electronic structure simulations. The emphasis is put on density functional theory and multiple post-Hartree-Fock methods using the Gaussian and plane wave approach and its augmented all-electron extension.

Revisiting the Volmer-Heyrovský mechanism of hydrogen evolution on a nitrogen doped carbon nanotube: constrained molecular dynamics versus the nudged elastic band method

Density functional theory (DFT) based computational electrochemistry has the potential to serve as a tool with predictive power in the rational development and screening of electrocatalysts for renewable energy technologies. It is, however, of paramount importance that simulations are conducted rigorously at a level of theory that is sufficiently accurate in order to obtain physicochemically sensible results. Herein, we present a comparative study of the performance of the static climbing image nudged elastic band method (CI-NEB) vs. DFT based constrained molecular dynamics simulations with thermodynamic integration in estimating activation and reaction (free) energies of the Volmer-Heyrovský mechanism on a nitrogen doped carbon nanotube. Due to cancellation of errors within the CI-NEB calculations, static and dynamic activation barriers are observed to be surprisingly similar, while a substantial decrease in reaction energies is seen upon incorporation of solvent dynamics. This finding is attributed to two competing effects; (1) solvent reorganization that stabilizes the transition and, in particular, the product states with respect to the reactant state and (2) destabilizing entropic contributions due to solvent fluctuations. Our results highlight the importance of explicitly sampling the interfacial solvent dynamics when studying hydrogen evolution at solid-liquid interfaces.

Proton Discharge on a Gold Electrode from Triethylammonium in Acetonitrile: Theoretical Modeling of Potential-Dependent Kinetic Isotope Effects

The discharge of protons on electrode surfaces, known as the Volmer reaction, is a ubiquitous reaction in heterogeneous electrocatalysis and plays an important role in renewable energy technologies. Recent experiments with triethylammonium (TEAH⁺) donating the proton to a gold electrode in acetonitrile demonstrate significantly different Tafel slopes for TEAH⁺ and its deuterated counterpart, TEAD⁺. As a result, the kinetic isotope effect (KIE) for the hydrogen evolution reaction changes considerably as a function of applied potential. Herein a vibronically nonadiabatic approach for proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) at an electrode interface is extended to heterogeneous electrochemical processes and is applied to this system. This approach accounts for the key effects of the electrical double layer and spans the electronically adiabatic and nonadiabatic regimes, as found to be necessary for this reaction. The experimental Tafel plots for TEAH⁺ and TEAD⁺ are reproduced using physically reasonable parameters within this model. The potential-dependent KIE or, equivalently, isotope-dependent Tafel slope is found to be a consequence of contributions from excited electron-proton vibronic states that depend on both isotope and applied potential. Specifically, the contributions from excited reactant vibronic states are greater for TEAD⁺ than for TEAH⁺. Thus, the two reactions proceed by the same fundamental mechanism yet exhibit significantly different Tafel slopes. This theoretical approach may be applicable to a wide range of other heterogeneous electrochemical PCET reactions.
