Identifying complex Fermi resonances in p-difluorobenzene using zero-electron-kinetic-energy (ZEKE) spectroscopy

Vibronic and Cationic Features of 2-Fluorobenzonitrile and 3-Fluorobenzonitrile Studied by REMPI and MATI Spectroscopy and Franck-Condon Simulations

Fluorinated organic compounds have superior physicochemical properties than general organic compounds due to the strong C-F single bond; they are widely used in medicine, biology, pesticides, and materials science. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the physicochemical properties of fluorinated organic compounds, fluorinated aromatic compounds have been investigated by various spectroscopic techniques. 2-fluorobenzonitrile and 3-fluorobenzonitrile are important fine chemical intermediates and their excited state S₁ and cationic ground state D₀ vibrational features remain unknown. In this paper, we used two-color resonance two photon ionization (2-color REMPI) and mass analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy to study S₁ and D₀ state vibrational features of 2-fluorobenzonitrile and 3-fluorobenzonitrile. The precise excitation energy (band origin) and adiabatic ionization energy were determined to be 36,028 ± 2 cm^-1 and 78,650 ± 5 cm^-1 for 2-fluorobenzonitrile and 35,989 ± 2 cm^-1 and 78,873 ± 5 cm^-1 for 3-fluorobenzonitrile, respectively. The density functional theory (DFT) at the levels of RB3LYP/aug-cc-pvtz, TD-B3LYP/aug-cc-pvtz, and UB3LYP/aug-cc-pvtz were used to calculate the stable structures and vibrational frequencies for the ground state S₀, excited state S₁, and cationic ground state D₀, respectively. Franck-Condon spectral simulations for transitions of S₁ ← S₀ and D₀ ← S₁ were performed based on the above DFT calculations. The theoretical and experimental results were in good agreement. The observed vibrational features in S₁ and D₀ states were assigned according to the simulated spectra and the comparison with structurally similar molecules. Several experimental findings and molecular features were discussed in detail.

Electronic, vibrational, and torsional couplings in N-methylpyrrole: Ground, first excited, and cation states

The electronic spectrum associated with the S₁ ← S₀ (ùA₂←X̃¹A₁) one-photon transition of jet-cooled N-methylpyrrole is investigated using laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and (1 + 1) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy; in addition, the (2 + 2) REMPI spectrum is considered. Assignment of the observed bands is achieved using a combination of dispersed fluorescence (DF), two-dimensional LIF (2D-LIF), zero-electron-kinetic energy (ZEKE) spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations. The spectroscopic studies project the levels of the S₁ state onto those of either the S₀ state, in DF and 2D-LIF spectroscopy, or the ground state cation (D₀ ⁺) state, in ZEKE spectroscopy. The assignments of the spectra provide information on the vibrational, vibration-torsion (vibtor), and torsional levels in those states and those of the S₁ levels. The spectra are indicative of vibronic (including torsional) interactions between the S₁ state and other excited electronic states, deduced both in terms of the vibrational activity observed and shifts from expected vibrational wavenumbers in the S₁ state, attributed to the resulting altered shape of the S₁ surface. Many of the ZEKE spectra are consistent with the largely Rydberg nature of the S₁ state near the Franck-Condon region; however, there is also some activity that is less straightforward to explain. Comments are made regarding the photodynamics of the S₁ state.

Real-Time Observation of Fermi Resonances in the S1 State of Phenol

Fermi resonances in the first electronically excited (S₁) state of phenol have been observed in real time. Quantum beats associated with coherent superposition of Fermi resonant eigenstates are manifested as temporal oscillations of the ionization cross sections of which the amplitudes are strongly dependent on the total ionization energy. This indicates that coherently excited eigenstates are effectively decomposed into their zeroth-order states, providing the unique opportunity for the investigation of nonstationary state dynamics in real-time. Energy gaps (Δν̃) of eigenstates within the laser coherence width have been most precisely determined up to date, giving Δν̃ ∼ 3.302 ± 0.001 or 1.655 ± 0.001 cm^-1 for the 1¹/4¹10b¹ or 12²/8a¹ Fermi doublets, respectively. Dephasing rate suddenly increases as the S₁ internal energy becomes above ∼1500 cm^-1, revealing the important role of energy randomization dynamics during the H atom tunneling process of phenol in S₁.
