Pattern Formation in a Spatially Extended Model of Pacemaker Dynamics in Smooth Muscle Cells

Spatiotemporal patterns are common in biological systems. For electrically coupled cells, previous studies of pattern formation have mainly used applied current as the primary bifurcation parameter. The purpose of this paper is to show that applied current is not needed to generate spatiotemporal patterns for smooth muscle cells. The patterns can be generated solely by external mechanical stimulation (transmural pressure). To do this we study a reaction-diffusion system involving the Morris-Lecar equations and observe a wide range of spatiotemporal patterns for different values of the model parameters. Some aspects of these patterns are explained via a bifurcation analysis of the system without coupling - in particular Type I and Type II excitability both occur. We show the patterns are not due to a Turing instability and that the spatially extended model exhibits spatiotemporal chaos. We also use travelling wave coordinates to analyse travelling waves.

A new class of chimeras in locally coupled oscillators with small-amplitude, high-frequency asynchrony and large-amplitude, low-frequency synchrony

Chimeras are surprising yet important states in which domains of decoherent (asynchronous) and coherent (synchronous) oscillations co-exist. In this article, we report on the discovery of a new class of chimeras, called mixed-amplitude chimera states, in which the structures, amplitudes, and frequencies of the oscillations differ substantially in the decoherent and coherent regions. These mixed-amplitude chimeras exhibit domains of decoherent small-amplitude oscillations (phase waves) coexisting with domains of stable and coherent large-amplitude or mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs). They are observed in a prototypical bistable partial differential equation with oscillatory dynamics, spatially homogeneous kinetics, and purely local, isotropic diffusion. They are observed in parameter regimes immediately adjacent to regimes in which common large-amplitude solutions exist, such as trigger waves, spatially homogeneous MMOs, and sharp-interface solutions. Also, key singularities, folded nodes, and folded saddles arising commonly in multi-scale, bistable systems play important roles, and these have not previously been studied in systems with chimeras. The discovery of these mixed-amplitude chimeras is an important advance for understanding some processes in neuroscience, pattern formation, and physics, which involve both small-amplitude and large-amplitude oscillations. It may also be of use for understanding some aspects of electroencephalogram recordings from animals that exhibit unihemispheric slow-wave sleep.

Andronov-Hopf and Neimark-Sacker bifurcations in time-delay differential equations and difference equations with applications to models for diseases and animal populations

In many areas, researchers might think that a differential equation model is required, but one might be forced to use an approximate difference equation model if data is only available at discrete points in time. In this paper, a detailed comparison is given of the behavior of continuous and discrete models for two representative time-delay models, namely a model for HIV and an extended logistic growth model. For each model, there are seven different time-delay versions because there are seven different positions to include time delays. For the seven different time-delay versions of each model, proofs are given of necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and stability of equilibrium points and for the existence of Andronov-Hopf bifurcations in the differential equations and Neimark-Sacker bifurcations in the difference equations. We show that only five of the seven time-delay versions have bifurcations and that all bifurcation versions have supercritical limit cycles with one having a repelling cycle and four having attracting cycles. Numerical simulations are used to illustrate the analytical results and to show that critical times for Neimark-Sacker bifurcations are less than critical times for Andronov-Hopf bifurcations but converge to them as the time step of the discretization tends to zero.
