Ultrafast molecular photophysics in the deep-ultraviolet

Femtosecond Core-Level Spectroscopy Reveals Involvement of Triplet States in the Gas-Phase Photodissociation of Fe(CO)5

Excitation of iron pentacarbonyl [Fe(CO)5], a prototypical photocatalyst, at 266 nm causes the sequential loss of two CO ligands in the gas phase, creating catalytically active, unsaturated iron carbonyls. Despite numerous studies, major aspects of its ultrafast photochemistry remain unresolved because the early excited-state dynamics have so far eluded spectroscopic observation. This has led to the long-held assumption that ultrafast dissociation of gas-phase Fe(CO)5 proceeds exclusively on the singlet manifold. Herein, we present a combined experimental-theoretical study employing ultrafast extreme ultraviolet transient absorption spectroscopy near the Fe M2,3-edge, which features spectral evolution on 100 fs and 3 ps time scales, alongside high-level electronic structure theory, which enables characterization of the molecular geometries and electronic states involved in the ultrafast photodissociation of Fe(CO)5. We assign the 100 fs evolution to spectroscopic signatures associated with intertwined structural and electronic dynamics on the singlet metal-centered states during the first CO loss and the 3 ps evolution to the competing dissociation of Fe(CO)4 along the lowest singlet and triplet surfaces to form Fe(CO)3. Calculations of transient spectra in both singlet and triplet states as well as spin-orbit coupling constants along key structural pathways provide evidence for intersystem crossing to the triplet ground state of Fe(CO)4. Thus, our work presents the first spectroscopic detection of transient excited states during ultrafast photodissociation of gas-phase Fe(CO)5 and challenges the long-standing assumption that triplet states do not play a role in the ultrafast dynamics.

Real-time structural dynamics of the ultrafast solvation process around photo-excited aqueous halides

This work investigates and describes the structural dynamics taking place following charge-transfer-to-solvent photo-abstraction of electrons from I- and Br- ions in aqueous solution following single- and 2-photon excitation at 202 nm and 400 nm, respectively. A Time-Resolved X-ray Solution Scattering (TR-XSS) approach with direct sensitivity to the structure of the surrounding solvent as the water molecules adopt a new equilibrium configuration following the electron-abstraction process is utilized to investigate the structural dynamics of solvent shell expansion and restructuring in real-time. The structural sensitivity of the scattering data enables a quantitative evaluation of competing models for the interaction between the nascent neutral species and surrounding water molecules. Taking the I0-O distance as the reaction coordinate, we find that the structural reorganization is delayed by 0.1 ps with respect to the photoexcitation and completes on a time scale of 0.5-1 ps. On longer time scales we determine from the evolution of the TR-XSS difference signal that I0: e- recombination takes place on two distinct time scales of ∼20 ps and 100 s of picoseconds. These dynamics are well captured by a simple model of diffusive evolution of the initial photo-abstracted electron population where the charge-transfer-to-solvent process gives rise to a broad distribution of electron ejection distances, a significant fraction of which are in the close vicinity of the nascent halogen atoms and recombine on short time scales.

Generation of high-energy, sub-20 fs deep-UV pulses in a twin-crystal third harmonic generation scheme

Ultrashort deep ultraviolet (DUV) pulses serve as indispensable tools for investigating molecular dynamics on the femtosecond scale. Nonlinear frequency upconversion of near-infrared (NIR) light sources in a sequence of nonlinear crystals is a common method for their generation. However, preserving the temporal duration of the starting source encounters challenges owing to phase-matching bandwidth limitations within the harmonic generation process. Here we propose an approach for circumventing this limitation and demonstrate it for the case of generation of the third harmonic of 800 nm pulses in a two-stage scheme (second harmonic generation succeeded by sum-frequency mixing of the fundamental and second harmonic pulses). Expanding the bandwidth of the DUV pulse involves the utilization for the last mixing process of two nonlinear crystals, detuned to convert opposite sides of the spectrum. The implementation of this approach yields 20 µJ, 263 nm DUV pulses as short as 19 fs after compression. The setup is very compact and extremely stable due to the common-path scheme, which makes it very interesting for a variety of advanced ultrafast spectroscopy applications.

Direct temporal characterization of sub-3-fs deep UV pulses generated by resonant dispersive wave emission

We report on the complete temporal characterization of ultrashort pulses, generated by resonant dispersive wave emission in gas-filled hollow-capillary fibers, with energy in the microjoule range and continuously tunable from the deep-ultraviolet to the ultraviolet. Temporal characterization of such ultrabroad pulses, particularly challenging in this spectral region, was performed using an all-in-vacuum setup for self-diffraction frequency resolved optical gating (SD-FROG). Sub-3-fs pulses were measured, tunable from 250 nm to 350 nm, with a minimum pulse duration of 2.4 ± 0.1 fs.

Photoswitchable Molecular Units with Tunable Nonlinear Optical Activity: A Theoretical Investigation

The first-, second-, and third-order molecular nonlinear optical properties, including two-photon absorption of a series of derivatives, involving two dithienylethene (DTE) groups connected by several molecular linkers (bis(ethylene-1,2-dithiolato)Ni- (NiBDT), naphthalene, quasilinear oligothiophene chains), are investigated by employing density functional theory (DFT). These properties can be efficiently controlled by DTE switches, in connection with light of appropriate frequency. NiBDT, as a linker, is associated with a greater contrast, in comparison to naphthalene, between the first and second hyperpolarizabilities of the "open-open" and the "closed-closed" isomers. This is explained by invoking the low-lying excited states of NiBDT. It is shown that the second hyperpolarizability can be used as an index, which follows the structural changes induced by photochromism. Assuming a Förster type transfer mechanism, the intramolecular excited-state energy transfer (EET) mechanism is studied. Two important parameters related to this are computed: the electronic coupling (VDA) between the donor and acceptor fragments as well as the overlap between the absorption and emission spectra of the donor and acceptor groups. NiBDT as a linker is associated with a low electronic coupling, VDA, value. We found that VDA is affected by molecular geometry. Our results predict that the linker strongly influences the communication between the open-closed DTE groups. The sensitivity of the molecular nonlinear optical properties could assist with identification of molecular isomers.

Efficient and compact source of tuneable ultrafast deep ultraviolet laser pulses at 50 kHz repetition rate

Deep ultraviolet (DUV) laser pulses with tuneable wavelength and very short duration are a key enabling technology for next-generation technology and ultrafast science. Their generation has been the subject of extensive experimental effort, but no technique demonstrated thus far has been able to meet all requirements in one light source. Here we demonstrate a bright, efficient, and compact source of tuneable DUV ultrafast laser pulses based on resonant dispersive wave emission in hollow capillary fiber. In a total footprint of only 120cm×75cm, including the ytterbium-based drive laser, we generate pulses between 208nm and 363nm at 50kHz repetition rate with a total efficiency of up to 3.6%. Down-scaling of the DUV generation reduces the required energy sufficiently to enable the generation of two-color few-femtosecond DUV pulses.

Automatized protocol and interface to simulate QM/MM time-resolved transient absorption at TD-DFT level with COBRAMM

We present a series of new implementations that we recently introduced in COBRAMM, the open-source academic software developed in our group. The goal of these implementations is to offer an automatized workflow and interface to simulate time-resolved transient absorption (TA) spectra of medium-to-big chromophore embedded in a complex environment. Therefore, the excited states absorption and the stimulated emission are simulated along nonadiabatic dynamics performed with trajectory surface hopping. The possibility of treating systems from medium to big size is given by the use of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and the presence of the environment is taken into account employing a hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) scheme. The full implementation includes a series of auxiliary scripts to properly setup the QM/MM system, the calculation of the wavefunction overlap along the dynamics for the propagation, the evaluation of the transition dipole moment at linear response TD-DFT level, and scripts to setup, run and analyze the TA from an ensemble of trajectories. Altogether, we believe that our implementation will open the door to the easily simulate the time-resolved TA of systems so far computationally inaccessible.

Ultrafast photoelectron spectroscopy of photoexcited aqueous ferrioxalate

The photochemistry of metal-organic compounds in solution is determined by both intra- and inter-molecular relaxation processes after photoexcitation. Understanding its prime mechanisms is crucial to optimise the reactive paths and control their outcome. Here we investigate the photoinduced dynamics of aqueous ferrioxalate ([Fe^III(C₂O₄)₃]^3-) upon 263 nm excitation using ultrafast liquid phase photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). The initial step is found to be a ligand-to-metal electron transfer, occuring on a time scale faster than our time resolution (≲30 fs). Furthermore, we observe that about 25% of the initially formed ferrous species population are lost in ∼2 ps. Cast in the contest of previous ultrafast infrared and X-ray spectroscopic studies, we suggest that upon prompt photoreduction of the metal centre, the excited molecules dissociate in <140 fs into the pair of CO₂ and [(CO₂)Fe^II(C₂O₄)₂]^3- fragments, with unity quantum yield. About 25% of these pairs geminately recombine in ∼2 ps, due to interaction with the solvent molecules, reforming the ground state of the parent ferric molecule.

Generation and compression of 10-fs deep ultraviolet pulses at high repetition rate using standard optics

The generation and characterization of ultrashort laser pulses in the deep ultraviolet spectral region is challenging, especially at high pulse repetition rates and low pulse energies. Here, we combine achromatic second harmonic generation and adaptive pulse compression for the efficient generation of sub-10 fs deep ultraviolet laser pulses at a laser repetition rate of 200 kHz. Furthermore, we simplify the pulse compression scheme and reach pulse durations of ≈10 fs without the use of adaptive optics. We demonstrate straight-forward tuning from 250 to 320 nm, broad pulse spectra of up to 63 nm width, excellent stability and a high robustness against misalignment. These features make the approach appealing for numerous spectroscopy and imaging applications.

Two-dimensional ultrafast transient absorption spectrograph covering deep-ultraviolet to visible spectral region optimized for biomolecules

We report on the implementation of a multi-kHz single-shot referenced non-coherent two-dimensional UV spectrograph based on conventional pump-probe geometry. It has the capability to cover a broad spectral region in excitation from 270-to-380 nm and in the detection from 270-to-390 nm and 320-to-720 nm. Other setups features are: an unprecedented time resolution of 33 fs (standard deviation); signals are photometrically corrected; a single-shot noise of <1 mOD. It has the capability to operate with sample volumes as small as few μl which is an accomplishment in studying biological or biomimetic systems. To show its performances and potentials, we report two preliminary studies on the photophysics of phenanthrenes hosted in a multichromophoric antenna system and of aromatic amino acids in a blue-copper azurin.

Ab Initio Surface-Hopping Simulation of Femtosecond Transient-Absorption Pump-Probe Signals of Nonadiabatic Excited-State Dynamics Using the Doorway-Window Representation

An ab initio theoretical framework for the simulation of femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption (TA) pump-probe (PP) spectra with quasi-classical trajectories is presented. The simulations are based on the classical approximation to the doorway-window (DW) representation of third-order four-wave-mixing signals. The DW formula accounts for the finite duration and spectral shape of the pump and probe pulses. In the classical DW formalism, classical trajectories are stochastically sampled from a positive definite doorway distribution, and the signals are evaluated by averaging over a positive definite window distribution. Nonadiabatic excited-state dynamics is described by a stochastic surface-hopping algorithm. The method has been implemented for the pyrazine molecule with the second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction (ADC(2)) ab initio electronic-structure method. The methodology is illustrated by ab initio simulations of the ground-state bleach, stimulated emission, and excited-state absorption contributions to the TA PP spectrum of gas-phase pyrazine.

Encoding the complete electric field of an ultraviolet ultrashort laser pulse in a near-infrared nonlinear-optical signal

We introduce a variation on the cross-correlation frequency-resolved optical gating (XFROG) technique that uses a near-infrared (NIR) nonlinear-optical signal to characterize pulses in the ultraviolet (UV). Using a transient-grating XFROG beam geometry, we create a grating using two copies of the unknown UV pulse and diffract a NIR reference pulse from it. We show that, by varying the delay between the UV pulses creating the grating, the UV pulse intensity-and-phase information can be encoded into a NIR signal. We also implemented a modified generalized-projections phase-retrieval algorithm for retrieving the UV pulses from these spectrograms. We performed proof-of-principle measurements of chirped pulses and double pulses, all at 400 nm. This approach should be extendable deeper into the UV and potentially even into the extreme UV or x-ray range.

Transient grating in a thin gas target for characterization of extremely short optical pulses

A transient-grating cross-correlation frequency-resolved optical gating (TG XFROG) with a thin gas target toward characterization of sub-femtosecond optical pulses is discussed. For evaluation of the reliability, sub-10 fs near-infrared pulses are characterized, the results of which are compared with those given by the sum-frequency-generation XFROG. The TG XFROG covers the nanojoule energy range or that for the advanced few-cycle UV pulses recently reported. It is also shown that the TG XFROG fails to characterize and heavily underestimates the durations of intense test pulses. The FROG technique sensitively detects the onset of this anomalous behavior, which represents a serious issue for pulse characterizations.

Transient X-ray Absorption Spectral Fingerprints of the S1 Dark State in Uracil

Low-lying dark nπ* states play an important role in many photophysical and photochemical processes of organic chromophores. Transient X-ray absorption spectroscopy (TXAS) provides a powerful technique for probing the dynamics of valence states by exciting the electrons into high-lying core excited states. We employ multiconfigurational self-consistent field calculations to investigate the TXAS of uracil along its nonradiative photodecay pathways. An open issue is whether dark nπ* state S₁ (n is the lone pair localized on an oxygen atom) is accessible when bright ππ* state S₂ is selectively excited. Vertical core excitations were calculated along the potential energy surfaces of the three lowest states, S₀-S₂, interpolated between two minima and two minimum-energy conical intersections. Computed TXAS data from the C, N, and O K edges show distinct spectral fingerprints of the dark state in all spectral regimes. At the O 1s edge, the nπ* state has a very strong absorption at 526-527 eV, while at the C (N) 1s edge, by contrast, there is almost zero (very weak) absorption at 279-282 eV (397-398 eV). All K-edge spectra can be used to sensitively detect the dark states. Our proposed O 1s feature has already been observed in a recent TXAS experiment with thymine. Natural transition orbital analysis is used to interpret all dominant features of the three lowest-valence states along the reaction coordinate and reveal some important valence fine-structure information from the core excitation.

Ultrafast photoinduced energy and charge transfer

After presenting the basic theoretical models of excitation energy transfer and charge transfer, I describe some of the novel experimental methods used to probe them. Finally, I discuss recent results concerning ultrafast energy and charge transfer in biological systems, in chemical systems and in photovoltaics based on sensitized transition metal oxides.

Pyrene, a Test Case for Deep-Ultraviolet Molecular Photophysics

We determined the complete relaxation dynamics of pyrene in ethanol from the second bright state, employing experimental and theoretical broadband heterodyne detected transient grating and two-dimensional photon echo (2DPE) spectroscopy, using pulses with duration of 6 fs and covering a spectral range spanning from 250 to 300 nm. Multiple lifetimes are assigned to conical intersections through a cascade of electronic states, eventually leading to a rapid population of the lowest long-living excited state and subsequent slow vibrational cooling. The lineshapes in the 2DPE spectra indicate that the efficiency of the population transfer depends on the kinetic energy deposited into modes required to reach a sloped conical intersection, which mediates the decay to the lowest electronic state. The presented experimental-theoretical protocol paves the way for studies on deep-ultraviolet-absorbing biochromophores ubiquitous in genomic and proteic systems.
