Onset of transverse (shear) waves in strongly-coupled Yukawa fluids

Universal scaling of transverse sound speed and its isomorphic property in Yukawa fluids

Molecular dynamical simulations are performed to investigate the scaling of the transverse sound speed in two-dimensional (2D) and 3D Yukawa fluids. From the calculated diagnostics of the radial distribution function, the mean-squared displacement, and the Pearson correlation coefficient, the approximate isomorphic curves for 2D and 3D liquidlike Yukawa systems are obtained. It is found that the structure and dynamics of 2D and 3D liquidlike Yukawa systems exhibit the isomorphic property under the conditions of the same relative coupling parameter Γ/Γ_{m}=const. It is demonstrated that the reduced transverse sound speed, i.e., the ratio of the transverse sound speed to the thermal speed, is an isomorph invariant, which is a quasiuniversal function of Γ/Γ_{m}. The obtained isomorph invariant of the reduced transverse sound speed can be useful to estimate the transverse sound speed, or determine the coupling strength, with applications to dusty (complex) plasma or colloidal systems.

Vibrational model for thermal conductivity of Lennard-Jones fluids: Applicability domain and accuracy level

Exact mechanisms of thermal conductivity in liquids are not well understood, despite a rich research history. A vibrational model of energy transfer in dense simple liquids with soft pairwise interactions seems adequate to partially fill this gap. The purpose of the present paper is to define its applicability domain and to demonstrate how well it works within the identified applicability domain in the important case of the Lennard-Jones model system. The existing results from molecular dynamics simulations are used for this purpose. Additionally, we show that a freezing density scaling approach represents a very powerful tool to estimate the thermal conductivity coefficient across essentially the entire gas-liquid region of the phase diagram, including metastable regions. A simple practical expression serving this purpose is proposed.

Observation of fast sound in two-dimensional dusty plasma liquids

Equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study two-dimensional (2D) dusty plasma liquids. Based on the stochastic thermal motion of simulated particles, the longitudinal and transverse phonon spectra are calculated, and used to determine the corresponding dispersion relations. From there, the longitudinal and transverse sound speeds of 2D dusty plasma liquids are obtained. It is discovered that, for wavenumbers beyond the hydrodynamic regime, the longitudinal sound speed of a 2D dusty plasma liquid exceeds its adiabatic value, i.e., the so-called fast sound. This phenomenon appears at roughly the same length scale of the cutoff wavenumber for transverse waves, confirming its relation to the emergent solidity of liquids in the nonhydrodynamic regime. Using the thermodynamic and transport coefficients extracted from the previous studies, and relying on the Frenkel theory, the ratio of the longitudinal to the adiabatic sound speeds is derived analytically, providing the optimal conditions for fast sound, which are in quantitative agreement with the current simulation results.

Deformations, relaxation, and broken symmetries in liquids, solids, and glasses: A unified topological field theory

We combine hydrodynamic and field theoretic methods to develop a general theory of phonons as Goldstone bosons in crystals, glasses, and liquids based on nonaffine displacements and the consequent Goldstone phase relaxation. We relate the conservation, or lack thereof, of specific higher-form currents with properties of the underlying deformation field-nonaffinity-which dictates how molecules move under an applied stress or deformation. In particular, the single-valuedness of the deformation field is associated with conservation of higher-form charges that count the number of topological defects. Our formalism predicts, from first principles, the presence of propagating shear waves above a critical wave vector in liquids, thus giving a formal derivation of the phenomenon in terms of fundamental symmetries. The same picture provides also a theoretical explanation of the corresponding "positive sound dispersion" phenomenon for longitudinal sound. Importantly, accordingly to our theory, the main collective relaxation timescale of a liquid or a glass (known as the α relaxation for the latter) is given by the phase relaxation time, which is not necessarily related to the Maxwell time. Finally, we build a nonequilibrium effective action using the in-in formalism defined on the Schwinger-Keldysh contour, that further supports the emerging picture. In summary, our work suggests that the fundamental difference between solids, fluids, and glasses has to be identified with the associated generalized higher-form global symmetries and their topological structure, and that the Burgers vector for the displacement fields serves as a suitable topological order parameter distinguishing the solid (ordered) phase and the amorphous ones (fluids, glasses).

Self-Diffusion in Simple Liquids as a Random Walk Process

It is demonstrated that self-diffusion in dense liquids can be considered a random walk process; its characteristic length and time scales are identified. This represents an alternative to the often assumed hopping mechanism of diffusion in the liquid state. The approach is illustrated using the one-component plasma model.

Entropy of simple fluids with repulsive interactions near freezing

Among different thermodynamic properties of liquids, the entropy is one of the hardest quantities to estimate. Therefore, the development of models allowing accurate estimations of the entropy for different mechanisms of interatomic interactions represents an important problem. Here, we propose a method for estimating the excess entropy of simple liquids not too far from the liquid-solid phase transition. The method represents a variant of cell theory, which particularly emphasizes relations between liquid state thermodynamics and collective modes properties. The method is applied to calculate the excess entropy of inverse-power-law fluids with ∝r^-n repulsive interactions. The covered range of potential softness is extremely wide, including the very soft Coulomb (n = 1) case, much steeper n = 6 and n = 12 cases, and the opposite hard-sphere interaction limit (n = ∞). An overall reasonably good agreement between the method's outcome and existing "exact" results is documented at sufficiently high fluid densities. Its applicability condition can be conveniently formulated in terms of the excess entropy itself. The method is also applied to the Lennard-Jones potential but demonstrates considerably lower accuracy in this case. Our results should be relevant to a broad range of liquid systems that can be described with isotropic repulsive interactions, including liquid metals, macromolecular systems, globular proteins, and colloidal suspensions.

Vibrational model of thermal conduction for fluids with soft interactions

A vibrational model of heat transfer in simple liquids with soft pairwise interatomic interactions is discussed. A general expression is derived, which involves an averaging over the liquid collective mode excitation spectrum. The model is applied to quantify heat transfer in a dense Lennard-Jones liquid and a strongly coupled one-component plasma. Remarkable agreement with the available numerical results is documented. A similar picture does not apply to the momentum transfer and shear viscosity of liquids.

Universal Effect of Excitation Dispersion on the Heat Capacity and Gapped States in Fluids

The change in dispersion of high-frequency excitations in fluids, from an oscillating solidlike to a monotonic gaslike one, is shown for the first time to affect thermal behavior of heat capacity and the q-gap width in reciprocal space. With in silico study of liquified noble gases, liquid iron, liquid mercury, and model fluids, we established universal bilinear dependence of heat capacity on q-gap width, whereas the crossover precisely corresponds to the change in the excitation spectra. The results open novel prospects for studies of various fluids, from simple to molecular liquids and melts.

Dispersion relations of Yukawa fluids at weak and moderate coupling

In this paper we compare different theoretical approaches to describe the dispersion of collective modes in Yukawa fluids when the interparticle coupling is relatively weak, so that the kinetic and potential contributions to the dispersion relation compete with each other. A thorough comparison with the results from molecular dynamics simulation allows us to conclude that, in the investigated regime, the best description is provided by the sum of the generalized excess bulk modulus and the Bohm-Gross kinetic term.

Direct Experimental Evidence of Longitudinal and Transverse Mode Hybridization and Anticrossing in Simple Model Fluids

A significant number of key properties of condensed matter are determined by the spectra of elementary excitations and, in particular, collective vibrations. However, the behavior and description of collective modes in disordered media (e.g., liquids and glasses) remains a challenging area of modern condensed matter science. Recently, anticrossing between longitudinal and transverse modes was predicted theoretically and observed in molecular dynamics simulations, but this fundamental phenomenon has never been observed experimentally. Here we demonstrate the mode anticrossing in a simple Yukawa fluid constructed from charged microparticles in weakly ionized gas. Theory, simulations, and experiments show clear evidence of mode anticrossing that is accompanied by mode hybridization and strong redistribution of the excitation spectra. Our results provide a significant advance in understanding excitations of fluids, opening new perspectives for studies of dynamics, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena in a wide variety of systems from noble-gas fluids and metallic melts to strongly coupled plasmas and molecular and complex fluids.

Benchmarking the effective one-component plasma model for warm dense neon and krypton within quantum molecular dynamics simulation

The effective one-component plasma (EOCP) model has provided an efficient approach to obtaining many important thermophysical parameters of hot dense matter [J. Clérouin, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 115003 (2016)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.116.115003]. In this paper, we perform extensive quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations to determine the equations of state, ionic structures, and ionic transport properties of neon and krypton within the warm dense matter (WDM) regime where the density (ρ) is up to 12 g/cm^{3} and the temperature (T) is up to 100 kK. The simulated data are then used as a benchmark to explicitly evaluate the EOCP and Yukawa models. It is found that, within present ρ-T regime, the EOCP model can excellently reproduce the diffusion and viscosity coefficients of neon and krypton due to the fact that this model defines a system which nearly reproduces the actual physical states of WDM. Therefore, the EOCP model may be a promising alternative approach to reasonably predicting the transport behaviors of matter in WDM regime at lower QMD computational cost. The evaluation of Yukawa model shows that the consideration of the energy level broadening effect in the average atom model is necessary. Finally, with the help of EOCP model, the Stokes-Einstein relationships about neon and krypton are discussed, and fruitful plasma parameters as well as a practical ρ-T-dependent formula of the effective coupling parameter are obtained. These results not only provide valuable information for future theoretical and experimental studies on dense neon and krypton but also reveal the applicability of the EOCP model and the limitation of the Yukawa model in WDM regime and further support the continuing search for a unified description of ionic transport in dense plasma.

Experimental validation of interpolation method for pair correlations in model crystals

Accurate analysis of pair correlations in condensed matter allows us to establish relations between structures and thermodynamic properties and, thus, is of high importance for a wide range of systems, from solids to colloidal suspensions. Recently, the interpolation method (IM) that describes satisfactorily the shape of pair correlation peaks at short and at long distances has been elaborated theoretically and using molecular dynamics simulations, but it has not been verified experimentally as yet. Here, we test the IM by particle-resolved studies with colloidal suspensions and with complex (dusty) plasmas and demonstrate that, owing to its high accuracy, the IM can be used to experimentally measure parameters that describe interaction between particles in these systems. We used three- and two-dimensional colloidal crystals and monolayer complex (dusty) plasma crystals to explore suitability of the IM in systems with soft to hard-sphere-like repulsion between particles. In addition to the systems with pairwise interactions, if many-body interactions can be mapped to the pairwise ones with some effective (e.g., density-dependent) parameters, the IM could be used to obtain these parameters. The results reliably show that the IM can be effectively used for analysis of pair correlations and interactions in a wide variety of systems and therefore is of broad interest in condensed matter, complex plasma, chemical physics, physical chemistry, materials science, and soft matter.

Excitation spectra in fluids: How to analyze them properly

Although the understanding of excitation spectra in fluids is of great importance, it is still unclear how different methods of spectral analysis agree with each other and which of them is suitable in a wide range of parameters. Here, we show that the problem can be solved using a two-oscillator model to analyze total velocity current spectra, while other considered methods, including analysis of the spectral maxima and single mode analysis, yield rough results and become unsuitable at high temperatures and wavenumbers. To prove this, we perform molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and calculate excitation spectra in Lennard-Jones and inverse-power-law fluids at different temperatures, both in 3D and 2D cases. Then, we analyze relations between thermodynamic and dynamic features of fluids at (Frenkel) crossover from a liquid- to gas-like state and find that they agree with each other in the 3D case and strongly disagree in 2D systems due to enhanced anharmonicity effects. The results provide a significant advance in methods for detail analysis of collective fluid dynamics spanning fields from soft condensed matter to strongly coupled plasmas.
