Discriminating organic isomers by high harmonic generation: A time-dependent configuration interaction singles study

Modeling of High-Harmonic Generation in the C60 Fullerene Using Ab Initio, DFT-Based, and Semiempirical Methods

We report calculations of the high-harmonic generation spectra of the C60 fullerene molecule carried out by employing a diverse set of real-time time-dependent quantum chemical methods. All methodologies involve expanding the propagated electronic wave function in bases consisting of the ground and singly excited time-independent eigenstates obtained through the solution of the corresponding linear-response equations. We identify the correlation and exchange effect in the spectra by comparing the results from methods relying on the Hartree-Fock reference determinant with those obtained using approaches based on the density functional theory with different exchange-correlation functionals. The effect of the full random-phase approximation treatment of the excited electronic states is also analyzed and compared with the configuration interaction singles and the Tamm-Dancoff approximation. We also showcase the fact that the real-time extension of the semiempirical method INDO/S can be effectively applied for an approximate description of laser-driven dynamics in large systems.

High-Harmonic Generation Spectroscopy of Gas-Phase Bromoform

High-Harmonic Generation (HHG) spectra of randomly aligned bromoform (CHBr3) molecules have been experimentally measured and theoretically simulated at various laser pulse intensities. From the experiments, we obtained a significant number of harmonics that goes beyond the cutoff limit predicted by the three-step model (3SM) with ionization from HOMO. To interpret the experiment, we resorted to real-time time-dependent configuration interaction with single excitations. We found that electronic bound states provide an appreciable contribution to the harmonics. More in detail, we analyzed the electron dynamics by decomposing the HHG signal in terms of single molecular-orbital contributions, to explain the appearance of harmonics around 20-30 eV beyond the expected cutoff due to HOMO. HHG spectra can be therefore explained by considering the contribution at high energy of HOMO-6 and HOMO-9, thus indicating a complex multiple-orbital strong-field dynamics. However, even though the presence of the bromoform cation should be not enough to produce such a signal, we could not exclude a priori that the origin of harmonics in the H29-H45 to be due to the cation, which has more energetic ionization channels.

Real-Time Extension of TAO-DFT

Thermally assisted occupation density functional theory (TAO-DFT) has been an efficient electronic structure method for studying the ground-state properties of large electronic systems with multi-reference character over the past few years. To explore the time-dependent (TD) properties of electronic systems (e.g., subject to an intense laser pulse), in this work, we propose a real-time (RT) extension of TAO-DFT, denoted as RT-TAO-DFT. Moreover, we employ RT-TAO-DFT to study the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) spectra and related TD properties of molecular hydrogen H2 at the equilibrium and stretched geometries, aligned along the polarization of an intense linearly polarized laser pulse. The TD properties obtained with RT-TAO-DFT are compared with those obtained with the widely used time-dependent Kohn-Sham (TDKS) method. In addition, issues related to the possible spin-symmetry breaking effects in the TD properties are discussed.

Quantitative performance analysis and comparison of optimal-continuum Gaussian basis sets for high-harmonic generation spectra

Quantum-chemistry methods in the time domain with Gaussian basis sets are increasingly used to compute high-harmonic generation (HHG) spectra of atomic and molecular systems. The quality of these approaches is limited by the accuracy of Gaussian basis sets to describe continuum energy states. In the literature, optimal-continuum Gaussian basis sets have been proposed: Kaufmann et al. [J. Phys. B: At., Mol. Opt. Phys. 22, 2223 (1989)], Woźniak et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 154, 094111 (2021)], Nestmann and Peyerimhoff [J. Phys. B: At., Mol. Opt. Phys. 23, L773 (1990)], Faure et al. [Comput. Phys. Commun. 144, 224 (2002)], and Krause et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 140, 174113 (2014)]. In this work, we have compared the performances of these basis sets to simulate HHG spectra of H atom at different laser intensities. We have also investigated different strategies to balance basis sets with these continuum functions, together with the role of angular momentum. To quantify the performance of the different basis sets, we introduce local and global HHG descriptors. Comparisons with the grid and exact calculations are also provided.

Role of Inner Molecular Orbitals in High-Harmonic Generation Spectra of Aligned Uracil

In this work, we decompose the high-harmonic generation (HHG) signal of aligned gas-phase uracil into single molecular-orbital (MO) contributions. We compute HHG spectra for a pulse linearly polarized perpendicular to the molecular plane, with an intensity of 0.6 and 0.85 × 1014 W/cm2 and a wavelength of 800 nm. We use the real-time time-dependent Configuration Interaction with singles method, coupled to a Gaussian-based representation of the time-dependent wavefunction. The strong-field dynamics is affected by the energy of the ionization/recombination channels and by the coupling between the orbital symmetry and laser polarization. In the configuration studied here, we expect that π-type MOs favorably couple with the incoming pulse and play a substantial role in generating the HHG spectrum. Indeed, we show that HOMO, HOMO - 1, and HOMO - 4, which all are π-like, determine the intensity of harmonic peaks at different energies, while HOMO - 2 and HOMO - 3 provide a smaller contribution. It is worth mentioning that HOMO - 4 produces a stronger signal than that from HOMO - 1, even though the corresponding ionization energy, in an one-electron picture, is around 2.5 eV larger and more than 4 eV larger than the HOMO one.

High harmonic spectra computed using time-dependent Kohn-Sham theory with Gaussian orbitals and a complex absorbing potential

High harmonic spectra for H₂ and H₂ ⁺ are simulated by solving the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equation in the presence of a strong laser field using an atom-centered Gaussian representation of the density and a complex absorbing potential. The latter serves to mitigate artifacts associated with the finite extent of the basis functions, including spurious reflection of the outgoing electronic wave packet. Interference between the outgoing and reflected waves manifests as peak broadening in the spectrum as well as the appearance of spurious high-energy peaks after the harmonic progression has terminated. We demonstrate that well-resolved spectra can be obtained through the use of an atom-centered absorbing potential. As compared to grid-based algorithms, the present approach is more readily extensible to larger molecules.

Effects of electronic correlation on the high harmonic generation in helium: a time-dependent configuration interaction singles vs time-dependent full configuration interaction study

In this paper, we investigate the effects of full electronic correlation on the high harmonic generation in the helium atom subjected to laser pulses of extremely high intensity. To do this, we perform real-time propagations of the helium atom wavefunction using quantum chemistry methods coupled to Gaussian basis sets. The calculations are done within the real-time time-dependent configuration interaction framework, at two levels of theory: time-dependent configuration interation with single excitations (TD-CIS, uncorrelated method) and time-dependent full configuration interaction (TD-FCI, fully correlated method). The electronic wavefunction is expanded in Dunning basis sets supplemented with functions adapted to describing highly excited and continuum states. We also compare the TD-CI results with grid-based propagations of the helium atom within the single-active-electron approximation. Our results show that when including the dynamical electron correlation, a noticeable improvement to the description of HHG can be achieved, in terms of e.g. a more constant intensity in the lower energy part of the harmonic plateau. However, such effects can be captured only if the basis set used suffices to reproduce the most basic features, such as the HHG cutoff position, at the uncorrelated level of theory.

Gaussian-Type Orbital Calculations for High Harmonic Generation in Vibrating Molecules: Benchmarks for H2. J Chem Theory Comput 2021;17:7353-7365. [PMID: 34747605 DOI: 10.1021/acs.jctc.1c00837]

The response of the hydrogen molecular ion, H₂⁺, to few-cycle laser pulses of different intensities is simulated. To treat the coupled electron-nuclear motion, we use adiabatic potentials computed with Gaussian-type basis sets together with a heuristic ionization model for the electron and a grid representation for the nuclei. Using this mixed-basis approach, the time-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved, either within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation or with nonadiabatic couplings included. The dipole response spectra are compared to all-grid-based solutions for the three-body problem, which we take as a reference to benchmark the Gaussian-type basis set approaches. Also, calculations employing the fixed-nuclei approximation are performed, to quantify effects due to nuclear motion. For low intensities and small ionization probabilities, we get excellent agreement of the dynamics using Gaussian-type basis sets with the all-grid solutions. Our investigations suggest that high harmonic generation (HHG) and high-frequency response, in general, can be reliably modeled using Gaussian-type basis sets for the electrons for not too high harmonics. Further, nuclear motion destroys electronic coherences in the response spectra even on the time scale of about 30 fs and affects HHG intensities, which reflect the electron dynamics occurring on the attosecond time scale. For the present system, non-Born-Oppenheimer effects are small. The Gaussian-based, nonadiabatically coupled, time-dependent multisurface approach to treat quantum electron-nuclear motion beyond the non-Born-Oppenheimer approximation can be easily extended to approximate wavefunction methods, such as time-dependent configuration interaction singles (TD-CIS), for systems where no benchmarks are available.

Time-dependentab initioapproaches for high-harmonic generation spectroscopy

High-harmonic generation (HHG) is a nonlinear physical process used for the production of ultrashort pulses in XUV region, which are then used for investigating ultrafast phenomena in time-resolved spectroscopies. Moreover, HHG signal itself encodes information on electronic structure and dynamics of the target, possibly coupled to the nuclear degrees of freedom. Investigating HHG signal leads to HHG spectroscopy, which is applied to atoms, molecules, solids and recently also to liquids. Analysing the number of generated harmonics, their intensity and shape gives a detailed insight of, e.g., ionisation and recombination channels occurring in the strong-field dynamics. A number of valuable theoretical models has been developed over the years to explain and interpret HHG features, with the three-step model being the most known one. Originally, these models neglect the complexity of the propagating electronic wavefunction, by only using an approximated formulation of ground and continuum states. Many effects unravelled by HHG spectroscopy are instead due to electron correlation effects, quantum interference, and Rydberg-state contributions, which are all properly captured by anab initioelectronic-structure approach. In this review we have collected recent advances in modelling HHG by means ofab initiotime-dependent approaches relying on the propagation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (or derived equations) in presence of a very intense electromagnetic field. We limit ourselves to gas-phase atomic and molecular targets, and to solids. We focus on the various levels of theory employed for describing the electronic structure of the target, coupled with strong-field dynamics and ionisation approaches, and on the basis used to represent electronic states. Selected applications and perspectives for future developments are also given.

Many-electron dynamics in laser-driven molecules: wavefunction theory vs. density functional theory

With recent experimental advances in laser-driven electron dynamics in polyatomic molecules, the need arises for their reliable theoretical modelling. Among efficient, yet fairly accurate methods for many-electron dynamics are Time-Dependent Configuration Interaction Singles (TD-CIS) (a Wave Function Theory (WFT) method), and Real-Time Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (RT-TD-DFT), respectively. Here we compare TD-CIS combined with extended Atomic Orbital (AO) bases, TD-CIS/AO, with RT-TD-DFT in a grid representation of the Kohn-Sham orbitals, RT-TD-DFT/Grid. Possible ionization losses are treated by complex absorbing potentials in energy space (for TD-CIS/AO) or real space (for RT-TD-DFT), respectively. The comparison is made for two test cases: (i) state-to-state transitions using resonant lasers (π-pulses), i.e., bound electron motion, and (ii) large-amplitude electron motion leading to High Harmonic Generation (HHG). Test systems are a H2 molecule and cis- and trans-1,2-dichlorethene, C2H2Cl2, (DCE). From time-dependent electronic energies, dipole moments and from HHG spectra, the following observations are made: first, for bound state-to-state transitions enforced by π-pulses, TD-CIS nicely accounts for the expected population inversion in contrast to RT-TD-DFT, in agreement with earlier findings. Secondly, when using laser pulses under non-resonant conditions, dipole moments and lower harmonics in HHG spectra are obtained by TD-CIS/AO which are in good agreement with those obtained with RT-TD-DFT/Grid. Deviations become larger for higher harmonics and at low laser intensities, i.e., for low-intensity HHG signals. We also carefully test effects of basis sets for TD-CIS/AO and grid size for RT-TD-DFT/Grid, different exchange-correlation functionals in RT-TD-DFT, and absorbing boundaries. Finally, for the present examples, TD-CIS/AO is observed to be at least an order of magnitude more computationally efficient than RT-TD-DFT/Grid.

On the Analysis of High Harmonic Generation Spectra of Atoms and Molecules Using Molecular Electrostatic Potential

One of the factors that limits the application of the single active electron (SAE) formalism to simulate the high harmonic generation (HHG) spectra of atoms and molecules using the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) is the unknown model effective one-dimensional potential energy (V(x)) curve for the SAE. In the present contribution, we show that V(x) can be constructed from the one-dimensional molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) of the respective cation to access theoretical HHG spectra not only for simple atoms but also for multielectron complex molecules.

Probing the molecular frame of uracil and thymine with high-harmonic generation spectroscopy

In this work, we present the computed high-harmonic generation (HHG) spectra of uracil and thymine molecules, by means of the real-time time-dependent formulation of Gaussian-based configuration interaction with single excitations (RT-TD-CIS). According to the experimental work [Hutchison et al., Comparison of high-order harmonic generation in uracil and thymine ablation plumes, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2013, 15, 12308], a pulse wavelength of 780 nm has been used, together with an intensity of 1014 W cm-2 and a pulse duration of 23 optical cycles. In order to examine the effect of pulse polarisation, rotationally averaged (to mimic the gas-phase sample) and single-polarisations have been computed for both molecules. Our results show that the HHG signal for both molecules possibly originates from different ionisation channels, involving HOMO, HOMO-1, HOMO-2 and HOMO-3 orbitals, which lie within 4 eV. We characterize the HHG spectrum of thymine, supporting the idea that the absence of the thymine signal in the original work does not depend on the single-molecule behaviour. Present results for uracil are consistent with the experimental data. Moreover, we have observed that states below and above the chosen ionisation threshold provide different contributions to the HHG spectrum in averaged and single-polarisation calculations.

Role of exchange and correlation in high-harmonic generation spectra of H2, N2, and CO2: Real-time time-dependent electronic-structure approaches

This study arises from the attempt to answer the following question: how different descriptions of electronic exchange and correlation affect the high-harmonic generation (HHG) spectroscopy of H₂, N₂, and CO₂ molecules? We compare HHG spectra for H₂, N₂, and CO₂ with different ab initio electronic structure methods: real-time time-dependent configuration interaction and real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) using truncated basis sets composed of correlated wave functions expanded on Gaussian basis sets. In the framework of RT-TDDFT, we employ Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) and long-range corrected Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (LC-ωPBE) functionals. We study HHG spectroscopy by disentangling the effect of electronic exchange and correlation. We first analyze the electronic exchange alone, and in the case of RT-TDDFT with LC-ωPBE, we use ω = 0.3 and ω = 0.4 to tune the percentage of long-range Hartree-Fock exchange and short-range exchange PBE. Then, we added the correlation as described by the PBE functional. All the methods give very similar HHG spectra, and they seem not to be particularly sensitive to the different description of exchange and correlation or to the correct asymptotic behavior of the Coulomb potential. Despite this general trend, some differences are found in the region connecting the cutoff and the background. Here, the harmonics can be resolved with different accuracy depending on the theoretical schemes used. We believe that the investigation of the molecular continuum and its coupling with strong fields merits further theoretical investigations in the near future.
