Riddles of the structure and vibrational dynamics of HO3 resolved near the ab initio limit

Role of non-statistical effects in deciding the fate of HO3˙ in the atmosphere

HO3˙ has been postulated as a reservoir for OH˙ in various atmospheric reactions. Under collision-free conditions, experiments indicate that the lifetime of this species should be more than one microsecond. Interestingly, the binding energy of HO3˙ is estimated to be ∼3 kcal mol-1 by recent experimental as well as theoretical works. The value of the binding energy suggests that the lifetime of HO3˙ should be in the picosecond range, and with this lifetime, HO3˙ cannot act as a reservoir for OH˙. In the present work, using on-the-fly semiclassical dynamics, we argue that if non-RRKM effects are included, the lifetime of HO3˙ may be higher than that estimated from the binding energy.

Fulminic acid: a quasibent spectacle

Fulminic acid (HCNO) played a critical role in the early development of organic chemistry, and chemists have sought to discern the structure and characteristics of this molecule and its isomers for over 200 years. The mercurial nature of the extremely flat H-C-N bending potential of fulminic acid, with a nearly vanishing harmonic vibrational frequency at linearity, remains enigmatic and refractory to electronic structure theory, as dramatic variation with both orbital basis set and electron correlation method is witnessed. To solve this problem using rigorous electronic wavefunction methods, we have employed focal point analyses (FPA) to ascertain the ab initio limit of optimized linear and bent geometries, corresponding vibrational frequencies, and the HCN + O(3P) → HCNO reaction energy. Electron correlation treatments as extensive as CCSDT(Q), CCSDTQ(P), and even CCSDTQP(H) were employed, and complete basis set (CBS) extrapolations were performed using the cc-pCVXZ (X = 4-6) basis sets. Core electron correlation, scalar relativistic effects (MVD1), and diagonal Born-Oppenheimer corrections (DBOC) were all included and found to contribute significantly in determining whether vibrationless HCNO is linear or bent. At the all-electron (AE) CCSD(T)/CBS level, HCNO is a linear molecule with ω5(H-C-N bend) = 120 cm-1. However, composite AE-CCSDT(Q)/CBS computations give an imaginary frequency (51i cm-1) at the linear optimized geometry, leading to an equilibrium structure with an H-C-N angle of 173.9°. Finally, at the AE-CCSDTQ(P)/CBS level, HCNO is once again linear with ω5 = 45 cm-1, and inclusion of both MVD1 and DBOC effects yields ω5 = 32 cm-1. A host of other topics has also been investigated for fulminic acid, including the dependence of re and ωi predictions on a variety of CBS extrapolation formulas, the question of multireference character, the N-O bond energy and enthalpy of formation, and issues that give rise to the quasibent appellation.

The Semiexperimental Approach at Work: Equilibrium Structure of Radical Species

The so-called semiexperimental (SE) approach is a powerful technique for obtaining highly accurate equilibrium structures for isolated systems. This Featured Article describes its extension to open-shell species, thus providing the first systematic investigation on radical equilibrium geometries to be used for benchmarking purposes. The small yet significant database obtained demonstrates that there is no reduction in accuracy when moving from closed-shell species to radicals. We also provide an extension of the applicability of the SE approach to medium-/large-sized radicals by exploiting the so-called "Lego-brick" approach, which is based on the assumption that a molecular system can be seen as formed by smaller fragments for which the SE equilibrium structure is available. In this Featured Article we show that this model can be successfully applied also to open-shell species.

The multichannel i-propyl + O2 reaction system: A model of secondary alkyl radical oxidation

The i-propyl + O2 reaction mechanism has been investigated by definitive quantum chemical methods to establish this system as a benchmark for the combustion of secondary alkyl radicals. Focal point analyses extrapolating to the ab initio limit were performed based on explicit computations with electron correlation treatments through coupled cluster single, double, triple, and quadruple excitations and basis sets up to cc-pV5Z. The rigorous coupled cluster single, double, and triple excitations/cc-pVTZ level of theory was used to fully optimize all reaction species and transition states, thus, removing some substantial flaws in reference geometries existing in the literature. The vital i-propylperoxy radical (MIN1) and its concerted elimination transition state (TS1) were found 34.8 and 4.4 kcal mol-1 below the reactants, respectively. Two β-hydrogen transfer transition states (TS2, TS2') lie above the reactants by (1.4, 2.5) kcal mol-1 and display large Born-Oppenheimer diagonal corrections indicative of nearby surface crossings. An α-hydrogen transfer transition state (TS5) is discovered 5.7 kcal mol-1 above the reactants that bifurcates into equivalent α-peroxy radical hanging wells (MIN3) prior to a highly exothermic dissociation into acetone + OH. The reverse TS5 → MIN1 intrinsic reaction path also displays fascinating features, including another bifurcation and a conical intersection of potential energy surfaces. An exhaustive conformational search of two hydroperoxypropyl (QOOH) intermediates (MIN2 and MIN3) of the i-propyl + O2 system located nine rotamers within 0.9 kcal mol-1 of the corresponding lowest-energy minima.

Ionization potentials for the H2CO trimer

In this work, a computational study on the ionization potentials (IPs) of the formaldehyde trimer, (H₂CO)₃, is presented. Twelve lowest-lying vertical IPs were determined through the use of the coupled-cluster level of theory using correlation consistent basis sets with extrapolation to the complete basis set limit and consideration of core electron correlation effects. Specifically, the equation-of-motion ionization potential coupled-cluster with single and double excitations method with the aug-cc-pVnZ and aug-cc-pCVnZ (n = D and T) basis sets was used. The Feller-Peterson-Dixon (FPD) composite approach was employed to provide accurate IPs, and eight conformations of (H₂CO)₃ were considered. The FPD IPs determined for (H₂CO)₃ were found to be systematically lower than those computed for the dimer and monomer of H₂CO in the pattern IP_(monomer) > IP_(dimer) > IP_(trimer) for a given IP. In addition, the IPs calculated when considering only the more stable conformation (C₀) are in good agreement with those obtained using the eight conformations of the H₂CO trimer, and thus, the actual conformation played only a minor role in determining such properties in the present case. By providing first accurate IP results for the H₂CO trimer, we hope to motivate future experimental and computational investigations (e.g., studies involving photoionization) that rely on such quantities.

Theoretical H + O3 rate coefficients from ring polymer molecular dynamics on an accurate global potential energy surface: assessing experimental uncertainties

Thermal rate coefficients and kinetic isotope effects have been calculated for an important atmospheric reaction H/D + O3 → OH/OD + O2 based on an accurate permutation invariant polynomial-neural network potential energy surface, using ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD), quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) and variational transition-state theory (VTST) with multidimensional tunneling. The RPMD approach yielded results that are generally in better agreement with experimental rate coefficients than the VTST and QCT ones, especially at low temperatures, attributable to its capacity to capture quantum effects such as tunneling and zero-point energy. The theoretical results support one group of existing experiments over the other. In addition, rate coefficients for the D + O3 → OD + O2 reaction are also reported using the same methods, which will allow a stringent assessment of future experimental measurements, thus helping to reduce the uncertainty in the recommended rate coefficients of this reaction.

Hydrogen-Atom Tunneling in Metaphosphorous Acid

Metaphosphorous acid (HOPO), a key intermediate in phosphorus chemistry, has been generated in syn- and anti-conformations in the gas phase by high-vacuum flash pyrolysis (HVFP) of a molecular precursor ethoxyphosphinidene oxide (EtOPO→C₂ H₄ +HOPO) at ca. 1000 K and subsequently trapped in an N₂ -matrix at 2.8 K. Unlike the two conformers of the nitrogen analogue HONO, the anti-conformer of HOPO undergoes spontaneous rotamerization at 2.8 K via hydrogen-atom tunneling (HAT) with noticeable kinetic isotope effects for H/D (>10⁴ for DOPO) and ¹⁶ O/¹⁸ O (1.19 for H¹⁸ OPO and 1.06 for HOP¹⁸ O) in N₂ -matrices.

Probing the ionization potentials of the formaldehyde dimer

In this work, we present a computational investigation on the ionization potentials (IPs) of the formaldehyde dimer, (H₂CO)₂. Twelve lowest lying IPs (corresponding to the entire valence orbitals) for both C_2h and C_s symmetry conformers have been computed at the coupled cluster level of theory using large correlation consistent basis sets with extrapolation to the complete basis set limit and consideration of core electron correlation effects. Specifically, the equation-of-motion ionization potential coupled-cluster with single and double (EOMIP-CCSD) excitations method with the aug-cc-pVXZ and aug-cc-pCVXZ (X = T, Q, and 5) basis sets combined with the Feller-Peterson-Dixon approach was employed, as well as CCSD with perturbative triples [CCSD(T)] with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets. In general, excellent agreement was observed from the comparison between the results obtained through the use of these approaches. In addition, the IPs for the formaldehyde monomer were also obtained using such methodologies and the results compared with existing experimental data; excellent agreement was also observed in this case. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first of its kind to determine the IPs for all these systems using a high level theory approach and is presented to motivate experimental investigations, e.g., studies involving photoionization, particularly for the formaldehyde dimer. The equilibrium binding energy of the C_2h dimer is calculated in this work at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory to be -4.71 kcal/mol. At this same level of theory, the equilibrium isomerization energy between C_2h and C_s conformers is 0.76 kcal/mol (C_s conformer being more stable).

Spectroscopic characterization of the first excited state and photochemistry of the HO3 radical

We report the one-dimensional cuts of the six-dimensional potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the ground and lowest doublet and quartet electronic states of trans-HO₃ at the MRCI-F12/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. Theoretical calculations predict that the first excited state (A²A) presents a real minimum on its PES and possesses a nonplanar structure. The adiabatic excitation energy at the MRCI+Q and MRCI-F12 levels shows that the A²A state lies in the near-infrared region. Both the transition dipole moment and the oscillator strength were predicted to be weak, which suggests that photodissociation of HO₃ to produce OH and O₂ after UV-Vis absorption is not a plausible mechanism. The harmonic vibrational frequencies and rotational constants of the weakly bound complex OH-O₂ in the two electronic states were predicted to help in its detection. Our PES shows that the reactions of H + O₃ or HO₂ + O in their ground states do not lead to trans-HO₃ in its ground electronic state if one of the component fragments, i.e., HO₂(A²A') + O(³P) or H(²S) + O₃(³B₂), is excited.
