Particle dispersion through porous media with heterogeneous attractions

Porous media used in many practical applications contain natural spatial variations in composition and surface charge that lead to heterogeneous physicochemical attractions between the media and transported particles. We performed Stokesian dynamics (SD) simulations to examine the effects of heterogeneous attractions on quiescent diffusion and hydrodynamic dispersion of particles within geometrically ordered arrays of nanoposts. We find that transport under quiescent conditions occurs by two mechanisms, diffusion through the void space and intermittent hopping between the attractive wells of different nanoposts. As the attraction heterogeneity increases, the latter mechanism becomes dominant, resulting in an increase in the particle trajectory tortuosity, deviations from Gaussian behavior in the particle displacement distributions, and a decrease in the long-time particle diffusivity. Similarly, under flow conditions corresponding to low Péclet number (Pe), increased attraction heterogeneity leads to transient localization near the nanoposts, resulting in a broadening of the particle distribution and enhanced longitudinal dispersion in the direction of flow. At high Pe where advection strongly dominates, however, the longitudinal dispersion coefficient is insensitive to attraction heterogeneity and exhibits Taylor-Aris dispersion behavior. Our findings provide insight into how heterogeneous interactions may influence particle transport in complex 3-D porous media.

Confined Dynamics in Spherical Polymer Brushes

We investigate the dynamics of polymers grafted to spherical nanoparticles in solution using hybrid molecular dynamics simulations with a coarse-grained solvent modeled via the multiparticle collision dynamics algorithm. The mean-square displacements of monomers near the surface of the nanoparticle exhibit a plateau on intermediate time scales, indicating confined dynamics reminiscent of those reported in neutron spin-echo experiments. The confined dynamics vanish beyond a specific radial distance from the nanoparticle surface that depends on the polymer grafting density. We show that this dynamical confinement transition follows theoretical predictions for the critical distance associated with the structural transition from confined to semidilute brush regimes. These findings suggest the existence of a hitherto unreported dynamic length scale connected with theoretically predicted static fluctuations in spherical polymer brushes and provide new insights into recent experimental observations.

Molecular and Colloidal Transport in Bacterial Cellulose Hydrogels

Bacterial cellulose biofilms are complex networks of strong interwoven nanofibers that control transport and protect bacterial colonies in the film. The design of diverse applications of these bacterial cellulose films also relies on understanding and controlling transport through the fiber mesh, and transport simulations of the films are most accurate when guided by experimental characterization of the structures and the resultant diffusion inside. Diffusion through such films is a function of their key microstructural length scales, determining how molecules, as well as particles and microorganisms, permeate them. We use microscopy to study the unique bacterial cellulose film via its pore structure and quantify the mobility dynamics of various sizes of tracer particles and macromolecules. Mobility is hindered within the films, as confinement and local movement strongly depend on the void size relative to diffusing tracers. The biofilms have a naturally periodic structure of alternating dense and porous layers of nanofiber mesh, and we tune the magnitude of the spacing via fermentation conditions. Micron-sized particles can diffuse through the porous layers but cannot penetrate the dense layers. Tracer mobility in the porous layers is isotropic, indicating a largely random pore structure there. Molecular diffusion through the whole film is only slightly reduced by the structural tortuosity. Knowledge of transport variations within bacterial cellulose networks can be used to guide the design of symbiotic cultures in these structures and enhance their use in applications like biomedical implants, wound dressings, lab-grown meat, clothing textiles, and sensors.

Nanoparticle dispersion in porous media: Effects of attractive particle-media interactions

We investigate the effects of physicochemical attractions on the transport of finite-sized particles in three-dimensional ordered nanopost arrays using Stokesian dynamics simulations. We find that weak particle-nanopost attractions negligibly affect diffusion due to the dominance of Brownian fluctuations. Strong attractions, however, significantly hinder particle diffusion due to localization of particles around the nanoposts. Conversely, under flow, attractions significantly enhance longitudinal dispersion at low to moderate Péclet number (Pe). At high Pe, by contrast, advection becomes dominant and attractions weakly enhance dispersion. Moreover, attractions frustrate directional locking at moderate flow rates, and shift the onset of this behavior to higher Pe.

Theory of the effect of external stress on the activated dynamics and transport of dilute penetrants in supercooled liquids and glasses

We generalize the self-consistent cooperative hopping theory for a dilute spherical penetrant or tracer activated dynamics in dense metastable hard sphere fluids and glasses to address the effect of external stress, the consequences of which are systematically established as a function of matrix packing fraction and penetrant-to-matrix size ratio. All relaxation processes speed up under stress, but the difference between the penetrant and matrix hopping (alpha relaxation) times decreases significantly with stress corresponding to less time scale decoupling. A dynamic crossover occurs at a critical "slaving onset" stress beyond which the matrix activated hopping relaxation time controls the penetrant hopping time. This characteristic stress increases (decreases) exponentially with packing fraction (size ratio) and can be well below the absolute yield stress of the matrix. Below the slaving onset, the penetrant hopping time is predicted to vary exponentially with stress, differing from the power law dependence of the pure matrix alpha time due to system-specificity of the stress-induced changes in the penetrant local cage and elastic barriers. An exponential growth of the penetrant alpha relaxation time with size ratio under stress is predicted, and at a fixed matrix packing fraction, the exponential relation between penetrant hopping time and stress for different size ratios can be collapsed onto a master curve. Direct connections between the short- and long-time activated penetrant dynamics and between the penetrant (or matrix) alpha relaxation time and matrix thermodynamic dimensionless compressibility are also predicted. The presented results should be testable in future experiments and simulations.

Reorientational dynamics in highly asymmetric binary low-molecular mixtures-A quantitative comparison of dielectric and NMR spectroscopy results

Previously, we scrutinized the dielectric spectra of a binary glass former made by a low-molecular high-T_g component 2-(m-tertbutylphenyl)-2'-tertbutyl-9,9'-spirobi[9H]fluorene (m-TPTS; T_g = 350 K) and low-T_g tripropyl phosphate (TPP; T_g = 134 K) [Körber et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 23, 7200 (2021)]. Here, we analyze nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and stimulated echo decays of deuterated m-TPTS-d₄ (²H) and TPP (³¹P) and attempt to understand the dielectric spectra in terms of component specific dynamics. The high-T_g component (α₁) shows relaxation similar to that of neat systems, yet with some broadening upon mixing. This correlates with high-frequency broadening of the dielectric spectra. The low-T_g component (α₂) exhibits highly stretched relaxations and strong dynamic heterogeneities indicated by "two-phase" spectra, reflecting varying fractions of fast and slow liquid-like reorienting molecules. Missing for the high-T_g component, such two-phase spectra are identified down to w_TPP = 0.04, indicating that isotropic reorientation prevails in the rigid high-T_g matrix stretching from close to T_g ^TPP to T_g1 w_TPP. This correlates with low-frequency broadening of the dielectric spectra. Two T_g values are defined: T_g1 (w_TPP) displays a plasticizer effect, whereas T_g2 (w_TPP) passes through a maximum, signaling extreme separation of the component dynamics at low w_TPP. We suggest understanding the latter counter-intuitive feature by referring to a crossover from "single glass" to "double glass" scenario revealed by recent MD simulations. Analyses reveal that a second population of TPP molecules exists, which is associated with the dynamics of the high-T_g component. However, the fractions are lower than suggested by the dielectric spectra. We discuss this discrepancy considering the role of collective dynamics probed by dielectric but not by NMR spectroscopy.

Activated penetrant dynamics in glass forming liquids: size effects, decoupling, slaving, collective elasticity and correlation with matrix compressibility

We employ the microscopic self-consistent cooperative hopping theory of penetrant activated dynamics in glass forming viscous liquids and colloidal suspensions to address new questions over a wide range of high matrix packing fractions and penetrant-to-matrix particle size ratios. The focus is on the mean activated relaxation time of smaller tracers in a hard sphere fluid of larger particle matrices. This quantity also determines the penetrant diffusion constant and connects directly with the structural relaxation time probed in an incoherent dynamic structure factor measurement. The timescale of the non-activated fast dissipative process is also studied and is predicted to follow power laws with the contact value of the penetrant-matrix pair correlation function and the penetrant-matrix size ratio. For long time penetrant relaxation, in the relatively lower packing fraction metastable regime the local cage barriers are dominant and matrix collective elasticity effects unimportant. As packing fraction and/or penetrant size grows, much higher barriers emerge and the collective elasticity associated with the correlated matrix dynamic displacement that facilitates penetrant hopping becomes important. This results in a non-monotonic variation with packing fraction of the degree of decoupling between the matrix and penetrant alpha relaxation times. The conditions required for penetrant hopping to become slaved to the matrix alpha process are determined, which depend mainly on the penetrant to matrix particle size ratio. By analyzing the absolute and relative importance of the cage and elastic barriers we establish a mechanistic understanding of the origin of the predicted exponential growth of the penetrant hopping time with size ratio predicted at very high packing fractions. A dynamics-thermodynamics power law connection between the penetrant activation barrier and the matrix dimensionless compressibility is established as a prediction of theory, with different scaling exponents depending on whether matrix collective elasticity effects are important. Quantitative comparisons with simulations of the penetrant relaxation time, diffusion constant, and transient localization length of tracers in dense colloidal suspensions and cold viscous liquids reveal good agreements. Multiple new predictions are made that are testable via future experiments and simulations. Extension of the theoretical approach to more complex systems of high experimental interest (nonspherical molecules, semiflexible polymers, crosslinked networks) interacting via variable hard or soft repulsions and/or short range attractions is possible, including under external deformation.
