Static and dynamic attractive-repulsive interactions in two coupled nonlinear oscillators

Chimeric states induced by higher-order interactions in coupled prey-predator systems

Higher-order interactions have been instrumental in characterizing the intricate complex dynamics in a diverse range of large-scale complex systems. Our study investigates the effect of attractive and repulsive higher-order interactions in globally and non-locally coupled prey-predator Rosenzweig-MacArthur systems. Such interactions lead to the emergence of complex spatiotemporal chimeric states, which are otherwise unobserved in the model system with only pairwise interactions. Our model system exhibits a second-order transition from a chimera-like state (mixture of oscillating and steady state nodes) to a chimera-death state through a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The origin of these states is discussed in detail along with the effect of the higher-order non-local topology which leads to the rise of a distinct and dynamical state termed as "amplitude-mediated chimera-like states." Our study observes that the introduction of higher-order attractive and repulsive interactions exhibit incoherence and promote persistence in consumer-resource population dynamics as opposed to susceptibility shown by synchronized dynamics with only pairwise interactions, and these results may be of interest to conservationists and theoretical ecologists studying the effect of competing interactions in ecological networks.

First-order transition to oscillation death in coupled oscillators with higher-order interactions

We investigate the dynamical evolution of Stuart-Landau oscillators globally coupled through conjugate or dissimilar variables on simplicial complexes. We report a first-order explosive phase transition from an oscillatory state to oscillation death, with higher-order (2-simplex triadic) interactions, as opposed to the second-order transition with only pairwise (1-simplex) interactions. Moreover, the system displays four distinct homogeneous steady states in the presence of triadic interactions, in contrast to the two homogeneous steady states observed with dyadic interactions. We calculate the backward transition point analytically, confirming the numerical results and providing the origin of the dynamical states in the transition region. The results are robust against the application of noise. The study will be useful in understanding complex systems, such as ecological and epidemiological, having higher-order interactions and coupling through conjugate variables.

Synchronization in repulsively coupled oscillators

A long-standing expectation is that two repulsively coupled oscillators tend to oscillate in opposite directions. It has been difficult to achieve complete synchrony in coupled identical oscillators with purely repulsive coupling. Here, we introduce a general coupling condition based on the linear matrix of dynamical systems for the emergence of the complete synchronization in pure repulsively coupled oscillators. The proposed coupling profiles (coupling matrices) define a bidirectional cross-coupling link that plays the role of indicator for the onset of complete synchrony between identical oscillators. We illustrate the proposed coupling scheme on several paradigmatic two-coupled chaotic oscillators and validate its effectiveness through the linear stability analysis of the synchronous solution based on the master stability function approach. We further demonstrate that the proposed general condition for the selection of coupling profiles to achieve synchronization even works perfectly for a large ensemble of oscillators.

Transition from inhomogeneous limit cycles to oscillation death in nonlinear oscillators with similarity-dependent coupling

We consider a system of coupled nonlinear oscillators in which the interaction is modulated by a measure of the similarity between the oscillators. Such a coupling is common in treating spatially mobile dynamical systems where the interaction is distance dependent or in resonance-enhanced interactions, for instance. For a system of Stuart-Landau oscillators coupled in this manner, we observe a novel route to oscillation death via a Hopf bifurcation. The individual oscillators are confined to inhomogeneous limit cycles initially and are damped to different fixed points after the bifurcation. Analytical and numerical results are presented for this case, while numerical results are presented for coupled Rössler and Sprott oscillators.

Regulating dynamics through intermittent interactions

In this article we experimentally demonstrate an efficient scheme to regulate the behavior of coupled nonlinear oscillators through dynamic control of their interaction. It is observed that introducing intermittency in the interaction term as a function of time or the system state predictably alters the dynamics of the constituent oscillators. Choosing the nature of the interaction, attractive or repulsive, allows for either suppression of oscillations or stimulation of activity. Two parameters Δ and τ, that reign the extent of interaction among subsystems, are introduced. They serve as a harness to access the entire range of possible behaviors from fixed points to chaos. For fixed values of system parameters and coupling strength, changing Δ and τ offers fine control over the dynamics of coupled subsystems. We show this experimentally using coupled Chua's circuits and elucidate their behavior for a range of coupling parameters through detailed numerical simulations.

A nonlinear memductance induced intermittent and anti-phase synchronization

We introduce a model to mimic the dynamics of oscillators that are coupled by mean-field nonlinear memductance. Notably, nonlinear memductance produces dynamic nonlinearity, which causes the direction of coupling to change over time. Depending on the parameters, such a dynamic coupling drives the trajectory of oscillators to a synchronization or anti-synchronization manifold. Specifically, depending on the forcing frequency and coupling strength, we find anti-phase and intermittent synchronization. With the increase in coupling magnitude, one can observe a transition from intermittent synchronization to complete synchronization through anti-phase synchronization. The results are validated through numerical simulations. The hypothesis has a huge impact on the study of neuronal networks.

Emergent noise-aided logic through synchronization

In this article, we present a dynamical scheme to obtain a reconfigurable noise-aided logic gate that yields all six fundamental two-input logic operations, including the xor operation. The setup consists of two coupled bistable subsystems that are each driven by one subthreshold logic input signal, in the presence of a noise floor. The synchronization state of their outputs robustly maps to two-input logic operations of the driving signals, in an optimal window of noise and coupling strengths. Thus the interplay of noise, nonlinearity, and coupling leads to the emergence of logic operations embedded within the collective state of the coupled system. This idea is manifested using both numerical simulations and proof-of-principle circuit experiments. The regions in parameter space that yield reliable logic operations were characterized through a stringent measure of reliability, using both numerical and experimental data.

Antiphase synchronization in multiplex networks with attractive and repulsive interactions

A series of recent publications, within the framework of network science, have focused on the coexistence of mixed attractive and repulsive (excitatory and inhibitory) interactions among the units within the same system, motivated by the analogies with spin glasses as well as to neural networks, or ecological systems. However, most of these investigations have been restricted to single layer networks, requiring further analysis of the complex dynamics and particular equilibrium states that emerge in multilayer configurations. This article investigates the synchronization properties of dynamical systems connected through multiplex architectures in the presence of attractive intralayer and repulsive interlayer connections. This setting enables the emergence of antisynchronization, i.e., intralayer synchronization coexisting with antiphase dynamics between coupled systems of different layers. We demonstrate the existence of a transition from interlayer antisynchronization to antiphase synchrony in any connected bipartite multiplex architecture when the repulsive coupling is introduced through any spanning tree of a single layer. We identify, analytically, the required graph topologies for interlayer antisynchronization and its interplay with intralayer and antiphase synchronization. Next, we analytically derive the invariance of intralayer synchronization manifold and calculate the attractor size of each oscillator exhibiting interlayer antisynchronization together with intralayer synchronization. The necessary conditions for the existence of interlayer antisynchronization along with intralayer synchronization are given and numerically validated by considering Stuart-Landau oscillators. Finally, we also analytically derive the local stability condition of the interlayer antisynchronization state using the master stability function approach.

Emergent rhythms in coupled nonlinear oscillators due to dynamic interactions

The role of a new form of dynamic interaction is explored in a network of generic identical oscillators. The proposed design of dynamic coupling facilitates the onset of a plethora of asymptotic states including synchronous states, amplitude death states, oscillation death states, a mixed state (complete synchronized cluster and small amplitude desynchronized domain), and bistable states (coexistence of two attractors). The dynamical transitions from the oscillatory to the death state are characterized using an average temporal interaction approximation, which agrees with the numerical results in temporal interaction. A first-order phase transition behavior may change into a second-order transition in spatial dynamic interaction solely depending on the choice of initial conditions in the bistable regime. However, this possible abrupt first-order like transition is completely non-existent in the case of temporal dynamic interaction. Besides the study on periodic Stuart-Landau systems, we present results for the paradigmatic chaotic model of Rössler oscillators and the MacArthur ecological model.

Aging in global networks with competing attractive-Repulsive interaction

We study the dynamical inactivity of the global network of identical oscillators in the presence of mixed attractive and repulsive coupling. We consider that the oscillators are a priori in all to all attractive coupling and then upon increasing the number of oscillators interacting via repulsive interaction, the whole network attains a steady state at a critical fraction of repulsive nodes, p_c. The macroscopic inactivity of the network is found to follow a typical aging transition due to competition between attractive-repulsive interactions. The analytical expression connecting the coupling strength and p_c is deduced and corroborated with numerical outcomes. We also study the influence of asymmetry in the attractive-repulsive interaction, which leads to symmetry breaking. We detect chimera-like and mixed states for a certain ratio of coupling strengths. We have verified sequential and random modes to choose the repulsive nodes and found that the results are in agreement. The paradigmatic networks with diverse dynamics, viz., limit cycle (Stuart-Landau), chaos (Rössler), and bursting (Hindmarsh-Rose neuron), are analyzed.
