Evaluation of the AMOEBA force field for simulating metal halide perovskites in the solid state and in solution

Many-Body MYP2 Force-Field: Toward the Crystal Growth Modeling of Hybrid Perovskites

Hybrid perovskites are well-known for their optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties. Molecular dynamics simulations allow the study of these soft and ionic crystals by including dynamical effects (e.g., molecular rotations, octahedra tilting, ionic diffusion and hysteresis), yet the high computational cost restricts the use of accurate ab initio forces for bulk or small atomic systems. Hence, great interest exists in the development of classical force-fields for hybrid perovskites of low and linear scaling computational cost, via both empirical methods and machine-learning. This work aims at extending the transferability of our MYP0 model, which has been successfully tailored to methylammonium lead iodide (MAPI) and applied to the study of molecular rotations, vibrations, diffusion of defects, and many other properties. The extended model, named MYP2, improves the description of inorganic or hybrid fragments and the processes of crystal formation while preserving a good description of bulk properties. More importantly, it allows for the direct simulation of the crystal growth of cubic MAPI from deposition of PbI and MAI precursors on the surfaces. Our findings pave the way toward classical force-fields able to model the microstructure evolution of hybrid perovskites and the crystalline synthesis from deposition in vacuo.

Dynamic Local Structure in Caesium Lead Iodide: Spatial Correlation and Transient Domains

Metal halide perovskites are multifunctional semiconductors with tunable structures and properties. They are highly dynamic crystals with complex octahedral tilting patterns and strongly anharmonic atomic behavior. In the higher temperature, higher symmetry phases of these materials, several complex structural features are observed. The local structure can differ greatly from the average structure and there is evidence that dynamic 2D structures of correlated octahedral motion form. An understanding of the underlying complex atomistic dynamics is, however, still lacking. In this work, the local structure of the inorganic perovskite CsPbI3 is investigated using a new machine learning force field based on the atomic cluster expansion framework. Through analysis of the temporal and spatial correlation observed during large-scale simulations, it is revealed that the low frequency motion of octahedral tilts implies a double-well effective potential landscape, even well into the cubic phase. Moreover, dynamic local regions of lower symmetry are present within both higher symmetry phases. These regions are planar and the length and timescales of the motion are reported. Finally, the spatial arrangement of these features and their interactions are investigated and visualized, providing a comprehensive picture of local structure in the higher symmetry phases.

Crystallization of FAPbI3: Polytypes and stacking faults

Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study the crystallization of formamidinium lead iodide. From all-atom simulations of the crystal growth process and the δ-α-phase transitions, we try to reveal the formation of various stack-faulted intermediate defected structures and report various polytypes of formamidinium lead iodide that are observed from simulations.

Untying the Cesium "Not": Cesium-Iodoplumbate Complexation in Perovskite Solution-Processing Inks Has Implications for Crystallization

We illustrate the critical importance of the energetics of cation-solvent versus cation-iodoplumbate interactions in determining the stability of ABX₃ perovskite precursors in a dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent medium. We have shown, through a complementary suite of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and computational studies, that Cs⁺ exhibits significantly different solvent vs iodoplumbate interactions compared to organic A⁺-site cations such as CH₃NH₃⁺ (MA⁺). Two NMR studies were conducted: ¹³³Cs NMR analysis shows that Cs⁺ and MA⁺ compete for coordination with PbI₃^- in DMF. ²⁰⁷Pb NMR studies of PbI₂ with cationic iodides show that perovskite-forming Cs⁺ (and, somewhat, Rb⁺) do not comport with the ²⁰⁷Pb chemical shift trend found for Li⁺, Na⁺, and K⁺. Three independent computational approaches (density functional theory (DFT), ab initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD), and a polarizable force field within Molecular Dynamics) yielded strikingly similar results: Cs⁺ interacts more strongly with the PbI₃^- iodoplumbate than does MA⁺ in a polar solvent environment like DMF. The stronger energy preference for PbI₃^- coordination of Cs⁺ vs MA⁺ in DMF demonstrates that Cs⁺ is not simply a postcrystallization cation "fit" for the perovskite A⁺-site. Instead, it may facilitate preorganization of the framework precursor that eventually transforms into the crystalline perovskite structure.

A Universal Force Field for Materials, Periodic GFN-FF: Implementation and Examination

In this study, the adaption of the recently published molecular GFN-FF for periodic boundary conditions (pGFN-FF) is described through the use of neighbor lists combined with appropriate charge sums to handle any dimensionality from 1D polymers to 2D surfaces and 3D solids. Numerical integration over the Brillouin zone for the calculation of π bond orders of periodic fragments is also included. Aside from adapting the GFN-FF method to handle periodicity, improvements to the method are proposed in regard to the calculation of topological charges through the inclusion of a screened Coulomb term that leads to more physical charges and avoids a number of pathological cases. Short-range damping of three-body dispersion is also included to avoid collapse of some structures. Analytic second derivatives are also formulated with respect to both Cartesian and strain variables, including prescreening of terms to accelerate the dispersion/coordination number contribution to the Hessian. The modified pGFN-FF scheme is then applied to a wide range of different materials in order to examine how well this universal model performs.

Advanced Electrostatic Model for Monovalent Ions Based on Ab Initio Energy Decomposition

Ions play important roles in the structures and functions of biomolecules. In biomolecular simulations, ions either directly interact with biomolecules or provide an ionic environment that influences electrostatic interactions of solutes. The AMOEBA+ water model has demonstrated significant advancement of the classical force field for describing molecular interactions due to its improvements on the functional forms to account for essential physics. This work expands the applicability of the AMOEBA+ model toward alkali metal (Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs) and halogen (F, Cl, Br, and I) ions. Various quantum chemical data on ion-ion and ion-water interactions, experimental ion hydration free energies, and lattice energies of salt crystals are used in the parametrization. The final parameters are verified with other properties outside of the parametrization data, including lattice energies of additional salt crystals and ionic activity coefficients in solution. The new model captures a wide range of ion properties from the gas phase to solution phase and crystals. More importantly, AMOEBA+ provides energy components that are consistent with ab initio energy decomposition. Thus, we expect AMOEBA+ to be more general, transferable, and valuable for the interpretation of intermolecular forces in efficient classical simulations.

Atomistic Insights Into the Degradation of Inorganic Halide Perovskite CsPbI3: A Reactive Force Field Molecular Dynamics Study

Halide perovskites make efficient solar cells but suffer from several stability issues. The characterization of these degradation processes is challenging because of the limited spatiotemporal resolution in experiments and the absence of efficient computational methods to study these reactive processes. Here, we present the first reactive force field for molecular dynamics simulations of the phase instability and the defect-induced degradation in CsPbI₃. We find that the phase transitions are driven by the anharmonic fluctuations of the atoms in the perovskite lattice. At low temperatures, the Cs cations tend to move away from their preferential positions, resulting in worse contacts with the surrounding metal halide framework which initiates the conversion to a nonperovskite phase. Moreover, our simulations of defective structures reveal that, although both iodine vacancies and interstitials are mobile in the perovskite lattice, the vacancies have a detrimental effect on the stability, leading to the decomposition of perovskites to PbI₂.

CLIFF: A component-based, machine-learned, intermolecular force field

Computation of intermolecular interactions is a challenge in drug discovery because accurate ab initio techniques are too computationally expensive to be routinely applied to drug-protein models. Classical force fields are more computationally feasible, and force fields designed to match symmetry adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) interaction energies can remain accurate in this context. Unfortunately, the application of such force fields is complicated by the laborious parameterization required for computations on new molecules. Here, we introduce the component-based machine-learned intermolecular force field (CLIFF), which combines accurate, physics-based equations for intermolecular interaction energies with machine-learning models to enable automatic parameterization. The CLIFF uses functional forms corresponding to electrostatic, exchange-repulsion, induction/polarization, and London dispersion components in SAPT. Molecule-independent parameters are fit with respect to SAPT2+(3)δMP2/aug-cc-pVTZ, and molecule-dependent atomic parameters (atomic widths, atomic multipoles, and Hirshfeld ratios) are obtained from machine learning models developed for C, N, O, H, S, F, Cl, and Br. The CLIFF achieves mean absolute errors (MAEs) no worse than 0.70 kcal mol^-1 in both total and component energies across a diverse dimer test set. For the side chain-side chain interaction database derived from protein fragments, the CLIFF produces total interaction energies with an MAE of 0.27 kcal mol^-1 with respect to reference data, outperforming similar and even more expensive methods. In applications to a set of model drug-protein interactions, the CLIFF is able to accurately rank-order ligand binding strengths and achieves less than 10% error with respect to SAPT reference values for most complexes.

Effect of vacancy concentration on the lattice thermal conductivity of CH3NH3PbI3: a molecular dynamics study

Hybrid halide perovskites are drawing great interest for photovoltaic and thermoelectric applications, but the relationship of thermal conductivities with vacancy defects remains unresolved. Here, we present a systematic investigation of the thermal conductivity of perfect and defective CH₃NH₃PbI₃, performed using classical molecular dynamics with an ab initio-derived force field. We calculate the lattice thermal conductivity of perfect CH₃NH₃PbI₃ as the temperature increases from 300 K to 420 K, confirming a good agreement with the previous theoretical and experimental data. Our calculations reveal that the thermal conductivities of defective systems at 330 K, containing vacancy defects such as V_MA, V_Pb and V_I, decrease overall with some slight rises, as the vacancy concentration increases from 0 to 1%. We show that such vacancies act as phonon scattering centers, thereby reducing the thermal conductivity. Moreover, we determine the elastic moduli and sound velocities of the defective systems, revealing that their slower sound speed is responsible for the lower thermal conductivity. These results could be useful for developing hybrid halide perovskite-based solar cells and thermoelectric devices with high performance.

Molecular dynamics simulations with the MYP force field were performed to determine the thermal conductivity of perfect and defective bulk MAPbI₃. Thermal conductivity was found to decrease overall as the vacancy concentration increased.
