Microscopic dissolution process of cellulose in alkaline aqueous solvents and its application in CNFs extraction - Investigating temperature as a variable

The target of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the micro-dissolution process of cellulose in alkaline aqueous solutions and to develop a novel method for extracting cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). Herein, the dissolution process of cellulose in alkaline aqueous solutions will be controlled by varying the temperature, and the undissolved cellulose will be analyzed to reveal the microscopic dissolution process of cellulose, and a novel process for extracting cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) will be developed based on the findings. The crystalline structure of cellulose was gradually disrupted as the dissolution progressed, and the crystal form of cellulose changed gradually from cellulose I to cellulose II during the dissolution process, while all undissolved cellulose crystals remained as cellulose I. Cellulose, after its structure is disrupted during the dissolution process, will inevitably decompose into CNFs, and the microscopic dissolution process of cellulose follows a "top-down" dissolution sequence. The CNFs extraction method developed in this study can extract CNFs with high yield (>60 %) in a stable manner, as well as narrow particle size distribution, high crystallinity (>77 %), and good thermal stability. This study enhances the comprehension of the dissolution process of cellulose and paves a possible way for industrialization of CNFs production.

The thermodynamics of enhanced dope stability of cellulose solution in NaOH solution by urea

The addition of urea in pre-cooled alkali aqueous solution is known to improve the dope stability of cellulose solution. However, its thermodynamic mechanism at a molecular level is not fully understood yet. By using molecular dynamics simulation of an aqueous NaOH/urea/cellulose system using an empirical force field, we found that urea was concentrated in the first solvation shell of the cellulose chain stabilized mainly by dispersion interaction. When adding a glucan chain into the solution, the total solvent entropy reduction is smaller if urea is present. Each urea molecule expelled an average of 2.3 water molecules away from the cellulose surface, releasing water entropy that over-compensates the entropy loss of urea and thus maximizing the total entropy. Scaling the Lennard-Jones parameter and atomistic partial charge of urea revealed that direct urea/cellulose interaction was also driven by dispersion energy. The mixing of urea solution and cellulose solution in the presence or absence of NaOH are both exothermic even after correcting for the contribution from dilution.

Neutron Total Scattering Investigation of the Dissolution Mechanism of Trehalose in Alkali/Urea Aqueous Solution

The atomic picture of cellulose dissolution in alkali/urea aqueous solution is still not clear. To reveal it, we use trehalose as the model molecule and total scattering as the main tool. Three kinds of alkali solution, i.e., LiOH, NaOH and KOH are compared. The most probable all-atom structures of the solution are thus obtained. The hydration shell of trehalose has a layered structure. The smaller alkali ions can penetrate into the glucose rings around oxygen atoms to form the first hydration layer. The larger urea molecules interact with hydroxide groups to form complexations. Then, the electronegative complexation can form the second hydration layer around alkali ions via electrostatic interaction. Therefore, the solubility of alkali aqueous solution for cellulose decreases with the alkali cation radius, i.e., LiOH > NaOH > KOH. Our findings are helpful for designing better green solvents for cellulose.
