Nonlocal Raman response in Kerr resonators: Moving temporal localized structures and bifurcation structure

Chirped-pulsed Kerr solitons in the Lugiato-Lefever equation with spectral filtering

Optical Kerr resonators support a variety of stable nonlinear phenomena in a simple and compact design. The generation of ultrashort pulses and frequency combs has been shown to benefit several applications, including spectroscopy and telecommunications. The most common anomalous dispersion Kerr resonators can be accurately described by a well-studied mean-field Lugiato-Lefever equation (LLE). Recently observed highly chirped pulses in normal dispersion resonators with a spectral filter, however, cannot. Here we examine the LLE in the normal dispersion regime modified with a Gaussian spectral filter (LLE-F). In addition to solutions associated with the LLE, we find stable highly chirped pulses. Solutions are strongly dependent on the filter bandwidth. Because of the large changes per round trip, the validity of the LLE-F fails over a large range of experimentally relevant parameters. While the mean-field approach leads to accurate predictions with respect to the nonlinearity coefficient and the dispersion, the dependence of drive power on loss deviates significantly from an experimentally accurate model, which leads to opportunities for Kerr resonators including frequency comb generation from low-Q-factor cavities.

Dissipative switching waves and solitons in the systems with spontaneously broken symmetry

The paper addresses the bistability caused by spontaneous symmetry breaking bifurcation in a one-dimensional periodically corrugated nonlinear waveguide pumped by coherent light at normal incidence. The formation and the stability of the switching waves connecting the states of different symmetries are studied numerically. It is shown that the switching waves can form stable resting and moving bound states (dissipative solitons). The protocols of the creation of the discussed nonlinear localized waves are suggested and verified by numerical simulations.

Introduction to Focus Issue: Instabilities and nonequilibrium structures

This Focus Issue on instabilities and nonequilibrium structures includes invited contributions from leading researchers across many different fields. The issue was inspired in part by the "VII Instabilities and Nonequilibrium Structures 2019" conference that took place at the Pontifica Universidad Católica de Valparaiso, Chile in December 2019. The conference, which is devoted to nonlinear science, is one of the oldest conferences in South America (since December 1985). This session has an exceptional character since it coincides with the 80th anniversary of Professor Enrique Tirapegui. We take this opportunity to highlight Tirapegui's groundbreaking contributions in the field of random perturbations experienced by macroscopic systems and in the formation of spatiotemporal structures in such systems operating far from thermodynamic equilibrium. This issue addresses a cross-disciplinary area of research as can be witnessed by the diversity of systems considered from inert matter such as photonics, chemistry, and fluid dynamics, to biology.
