Abstract
The evaluation of oxidation and reduction potentials is a pivotal task in various chemical fields. However, their accurate prediction by theoretical computations, which is a complementary task and sometimes the only alternative to experimental measurement, may be often resource-intensive and time-consuming. This paper addresses this challenge through the application of machine learning techniques, with a particular focus on graph-based methods (such as graph edit distances, graph kernels, and graph neural networks) that are reviewed to enlighten their deep links with theoretical chemistry. To this aim, we establish the ORedOx159 database, a comprehensive, homogeneous (with reference values stemming from density functional theory calculations), and reliable resource containing 318 one-electron reduction and oxidation reactions and featuring 159 large organic compounds. Subsequently, we provide an instructive overview of the good practice in machine learning and of commonly utilized machine learning models. We then assess their predictive performances on the ORedOx159 dataset through extensive analyses. Our simulations using descriptors that are computed in an almost instantaneous way result in a notable improvement in prediction accuracy, with mean absolute error (MAE) values equal to 5.6 kcal mol- 1 $$ {}^{-1} $$ for reduction and 7.2 kcal mol- 1 $$ {}^{-1} $$ for oxidation potentials, which paves a way toward efficient in silico design of new electrochemical systems.

Abstract
The effective calculation of static nonlinear optical properties requires a considerably high accuracy at a reasonable computational cost, to tackle challenging organic and inorganic systems acting as precursors and/or active layers of materials in (nano-)devices. That trade-off implies to obtain very accurate electronic energies in the presence of externally applied electric fields to consequently obtain static polarizabilities (α i j ) and hyper-polarizabilities (β i j k andγ i j k l ). Density functional theory is known to provide an excellent compromise between accuracy and computational cost, which is however largely impeded for these properties without introducing range-separation techniques. We thus explore here the ability of a modern (double-hybrid and range-separated) Range-Separated eXchange Quadratic Integrand Double-Hybrid exchange-correlation functional to compete in accuracy with more costly and/or tuned methods, thanks to its robust and parameter-free nature.

Abstract
The photophysics of organic semiconductor (OSC) thin films or crystals has garnered significant attention in recent years since a comprehensive theoretical understanding of the various processes occurring upon photoexcitation is crucial for assessing the efficiency of OSC materials. To date, research in this area has relied on methods using Frenkel-Holstein Hamiltonians, calculations of the GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation with periodic boundaries, or cluster-based approaches using quantum chemical methods, with each of the three approaches having distinct advantages and disadvantages. In this work, we introduce an optimally tuned, range-separated time-dependent density functional theory approach to accurately reproduce the total and polarization-resolved absorption spectra of pentacene, tetracene, and perylene thin films, all representative OSC materials. Our approach achieves excellent agreement with experimental data (mostly ≤0.1 eV) when combined with the utilization of clusters comprising multiple monomers and a standard polarizable continuum model to simulate the thin-film environment. Our protocol therefore addresses a major drawback of cluster-based approaches and makes them attractive tools for OSC investigations. Its key advantages include its independence from external, system-specific fitting parameters and its straightforward application with well-known quantum chemical program codes. It demonstrates how chemical intuition can help to reduce computational cost and still arrive at chemically meaningful and almost quantitative results.

Abstract
A family of non-empirical double-hybrid (DH) density functionals, such as Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE)0-DH, PBE-QIDH, and their range-separated exchange (RSX) versions RSX-0DH and RSX-QIDH, all using Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof(PBE) exchange and correlationfunctionals, is applied here to calculate the excitation energies for increasingly longer linear and cyclic acenes as part of their intense benchmarking for excited states of all types. The energies for the two lowest-lying singlet 1La and 1Lb states of linear oligoacenes as well as the triplet 3La and 3Lb states, are calculated and compared with experimental results. These functionals clearly outperform the results obtained from hybrid functionals and favorably compare with other double-hybrid expressions also tested here, such as B2-PLYP, B2GP-PLYP, ωB2-PLYP, and ωB2GP-PLYP. The study is complemented by the computation of adiabatic S0-T1 singlet-triplet energy difference for linear acenes as well as the extension of the study to strained cyclic oligomers, showing how the family of non-empirical expressions robustly leads to competitive results.

Abstract
Difference approaches to the study of excited states have undergone a renaissance in recent years, with the development of a plethora of algorithms for locating self-consistent field approximations to excited states. Density functional theory is likely to offer the best balance of cost and accuracy for difference approaches, and yet there has been little investigation of how the parametrization of density functional approximations affects performance. In this work, we aim to explore the role of the global Hartree-Fock exchange parameter in tuning accuracy of different excitation types within the framework of the recently introduced difference projected double-hybrid density functional theory approach and contrast the performance with conventional time-dependent double-hybrid density functional theory. Difference projected double-hybrid density functional theory was demonstrated to give vertical excitation energies with average error and standard deviation with respect to multireference perturbation theory comparable to more expensive linear-response coupled cluster approaches ( J. Chem. Phys.2020, 153, 074103). However, despite benchmarking of local excitations, there has been no investigation of the methods performance for charge transfer or Rydberg excitations. In this work we report a new benchmark of charge transfer, Rydberg, and local excited state vertical excitation energies and examine how the exact Hartree-Fock exchange affects the benchmark performance to provide a deeper understanding of how projection and nonlocal correlation balance differing sources of error in the ground and excited states.

Abstract
Even though many efforts have been devoted to optical lasing in recent years, the realization of lasing by direct electrical excitation of organic semiconductors is hampered mainly due to optical losses from electrical contacts and electrical losses induced by triplets and polarons at high current densities. Hereby, accurately accounting for the electrically pumped organic semiconductor laser diodes (OSLDs) still remains one of the greatest challenges in optoelectronics. In this work, the excited-state characteristics of the organic semiconductor dyes used in the electrically pumped OSLDs have thoroughly been investigated using optimally tuned range-separated hybrids (OT-RSHs). Considering several experimentally known compounds of the electrically pumped OSLDs as working models, several variants of OT-RSHs, their combination forms with the polarizable continuum model (PCM), OT-RSH-PCM, as well as their screened versions accounting for the screening effects by the electron correlation through the scalar dielectric constant, OT-SRSHs, have been proposed for reliable prediction of their emission energies and oscillator strengths in both the gas and solvent phases. The role of involved ingredients in the models, namely, the underlying density functional approximations, short- and long-range exact-like exchange, as well as the range-separation parameter, has been examined in detail. It is shown that the newly designed OT-RSHs with the correct behavior of asymptotic exchange-correlation potential outperform the standard RSHs and other density functionals with both fixed and interelectronic distance-dependent exact-like exchange for describing the excite-state properties of compounds of the electrically pumped OSLDs. Concerning the computational cost of the models, it is unveiled that performing both the optimal tuning procedure and subsequent excited-state computations using OT-RSHs in the gas phase can be considered as a more reliable and affordable framework. Finally, the applicability of the proposed models is also put into a broader perspective for the computational design of several compounds as promising candidates to be used in the OSLD materials. Hopefully, our recommended OT-RSHs can function as efficient models for both the related theoretical modeling and confirming the experimental observations in the field of electrically pumped OSLDs.

Abstract
We calculate the relative energy between the cumulene and polyyne structures of a set of C4k+2 (k = 4-7) rings (C18, C22, C26, and C30 prompted by the recent synthesis of the cyclo[18]carbon (or simply C18) compounds. Reference results were obtained by a costly Quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) approach, providing thus very accurate values allowing to systematically compare the performance of a variety of wavefunction methods [(i.e., MP2, SCS-MP2, SOS-MP2, DLPNO-CCSD, and DLPNO-CCSD(T)] as well as DFT approaches, applying for the latter a diversity of density functionals covering global and range-separated hybrid and double-hybrid models. The influence of the use of a range-separation scheme for density functionals, for both hybrid and double-hybrid expressions, is discussed according to its key role. Overall, range-separated double-hybrid functionals (e.g., RSX-QIDH) behave very accurately and provide competitive results compared with DLPNO-CCSD(T), at a more reasonable computational cost.

Abstract
Our second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction [ADC(2)]-based double-hybrid (DH) ansatz (J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2019, 15, 4440. DOI: 10.1021/acs.jctc.9b00391) is combined with range-separation techniques. In the present scheme, both the exchange and the correlation contributions are range-separated, while spin-scaling approaches are also applied. The new methods are thoroughly tested for the most popular benchmark sets including 250 singlet and 156 triplet excitations, as well as 80 oscillator strengths. It is demonstrated that the range separation for the correlation contributions is highly recommended for both the genuine and the ADC(2)-based DH approaches. Our results show that the latter scheme slightly but consistently outperforms the former one for single excitation dominated transitions. Furthermore, states with larger fractions of double excitations are assessed as well, and challenging charge-transfer excitations are also discussed, where the recently proposed spin-scaled long-range corrected DHs fail. The suggested iterative fourth-power scaling RS-PBE-P86/SOS-ADC(2) method, using only three adjustable parameters, provides the most robust and accurate excitation energies within the DH theory. In addition, the relative error of the oscillator strengths is reduced by 65% compared to the best genuine DH functionals.

Abstract
We use the GW100 benchmark set to systematically judge the quality of several perturbation theories against high-level quantum chemistry methods. First of all, we revisit the reference CCSD(T) ionization potentials for this popular benchmark set and establish a revised set of CCSD(T) results. Then, for all of these 100 molecules, we calculate the HOMO energy within second and third-order perturbation theory (PT2 and PT3), and, GW as post-Hartree-Fock methods. We found GW to be the most accurate of these three approximations for the ionization potential, by far. Going beyond GW by adding more diagrams is a tedious and dangerous activity: We tried to complement GW with second-order exchange (SOX), with second-order screened exchange (SOSEX), with interacting electron-hole pairs (WTDHF), and with a GW density-matrix (γGW). Only the γGW result has a positive impact. Finally using an improved hybrid functional for the non-interacting Green’s function, considering it as a cheap way to approximate self-consistency, the accuracy of the simplest GW approximation improves even more. We conclude that GW is a miracle: Its subtle balance makes GW both accurate and fast.

Abstract
Our recently presented range-separated (RS) double-hybrid (DH) time-dependent density functional approach [J. Chem. Theory Comput. 17, 927 (2021)] is combined with spin-scaling techniques. The proposed spin-component-scaled (SCS) and scaled-opposite-spin (SOS) variants are thoroughly tested for almost 500 excitations including the most challenging types. This comprehensive study provides useful information not only about the new approaches but also about the most prominent methods in the DH class. The benchmark calculations confirm the robustness of the RS-DH ansatz, while several tendencies and deficiencies are pointed out for the existing functionals. Our results show that the SCS variant consistently improves the results, while the SOS variant preserves the benefits of the original RS-DH method reducing its computational expenses. It is also demonstrated that, besides our approaches, only the nonempirical functionals provide balanced performance for general applications, while particular methods are only suggested for certain types of excitations.

Abstract
The range-separated version of double-hybrid density functional theory (DH-DFT) with a remarkable efficiency for both ground-state and excited-state characteristics has recently come into spotlight. In this work, based on theoretical arguments, several variants of spin-opposite-scaled range-separated exchange double-hybrid models (SOS-RSX-DHs) have been proposed and validated. More specifically, we first extend the RSX-DHs to design some other related models. Next, the SOS version of the resulting approximations is constructed and thoroughly evaluated using standard benchmark compilations of various properties. It is shown that although there are properties for which the RSX-DH and SOS-RSX-DH frameworks are rival, there are still some problems particularly prone to the self-interaction error issues where our proposed models seem to be beneficial. Furthermore, some of the presented models devoid of any additional corrections can also surpass the recently proposed approximations from different rungs of "Jacob's Ladder". Nonetheless, perusing the results of different methods and detailed comparisons with the predecessors discloses that all things may not necessarily be well with the RSX and SOS-RSX schemes, where the parent DHs as well as their SOS counterparts can still come into play.

Abstract
We investigate the performance of a set of recently introduced range-separated double-hybrid functionals, namely ωB2-PLYP, ωB2GP-PLYP, RSX-0DH, and RSX-QIDH models for hard-to-calculate excitation energies. We compare with the parent (B2-PLYP, B2GP-PLYP, PBE0-DH, and PBE-QIDH) and other (DSD-PBEP86) double-hybrid models as well as with some of the most widely employed hybrid functionals (B3LYP, PBE0, M06-2X, and ωB97X). For this purpose, we select a number of medium-sized intra- and inter-molecular charge-transfer excitations, which are known to be challenging to calculate using time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) and for which accurate reference values are available. We assess whether the high accuracy shown by the newest double-hybrid models is also confirmed for those cases too. We find that asymptotically corrected double-hybrid models yield a superior performance, especially for the inter-molecular charge-transfer excitation energies, as compared to standard double-hybrid models. Overall, the PBE-QIDH and its corresponding range-separated RSX-QIDH functional are recommended for general-purpose TD-DFT applications, depending on whether long-range effects are expected to play a significant role.

Abstract
A simple and robust range-separated (RS) double-hybrid (DH) time-dependent density functional approach is presented for the accurate calculation of excitation energies of molecules within the Tamm-Dancoff approximation. The scheme can be considered as an excited-state extension of the ansatz proposed by Toulouse and co-workers [J. Chem. Phys. 2018, 148, 164105], which is based on the two-parameter decomposition of the Coulomb potential, for which both the exchange and correlation contributions are range-separated. A flexible and efficient implementation of the new scheme is also presented, which facilitates its extension to any combination of exchange and correlation functionals. The performance of the new approximation is tested for singlet excitations on several benchmark compilations and thoroughly compared to that of representative DH, RS hybrid, and RS DH functionals. The one-electron basis set dependence and computation times are also assessed. Our results show that the new approach improves on standard DHs in most cases, and it can provide a more robust and accurate alternative. In addition, on average, it noticeably surpasses the existing RS hybrid and RS DH functionals.

Abstract
Connections between the Görling-Levy (GL) perturbation theory and the parameters of double-hybrid (DH) density functional are established via adiabatic connection formalism. Moreover, we present a more general DH density functional theory, where the higher-order perturbation terms beyond the second-order GL2 one, such as GL3 and GL4, also contribute. It is shown that a class of DH functionals including previously proposed ones can be formed using the present construction. Based on the proposed formalism, we assess the performance of higher-order DH and long-range corrected DH formed on the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) semilocal functional and second-order GL2 correlation energy. The underlying construction of DH functionals based on the generalized many-body perturbation approaches is physically appealing in terms of the development of the non-local forms using more accurate and sophisticated semilocal functionals.
