Molecular modeling of aqueous electrolytes at interfaces: Effects of long-range dispersion forces and of ionic charge rescaling

System-Specific Parameter Optimization for Nonpolarizable and Polarizable Force Fields

The accuracy of classical force fields (FFs) has been shown to be limited for the simulation of cation-protein systems despite their importance in understanding the processes of life. Improvements can result from optimizing the parameters of classical FFs or by extending the FF formulation by terms describing charge transfer (CT) and polarization (POL) effects. In this work, we introduce our implementation of the CTPOL model in OpenMM, which extends the classical additive FF formula by adding CT and POL. Furthermore, we present an open-source parametrization tool, called FFAFFURR, that enables the (system-specific) parametrization of OPLS-AA and CTPOL models. The performance of our workflow was evaluated by its ability to reproduce quantum chemistry energies and by molecular dynamics simulations of a zinc-finger protein.

Madrid-2019 force field: An extension to divalent cations Sr2+ and Ba2

In this work, we present a parameterization of Sr2+ and Ba2+ cations, which expands the alkali earth set of cations of the Madrid-2019 force field. We have tested the model against the experimental densities of eight different salts, namely, SrCl2, SrBr2, SrI2, Sr(NO3)2, BaCl2, BaBr2, BaI2, and Ba(NO3)2. The force field is able to reproduce the experimental densities of all these salts up to their solubility limit. Furthermore, we have computed the viscosities for two selected salts, finding that the experimental values are overestimated, but the predictions are still reasonable. Finally, the structural properties for all the salts have been calculated with this model and align remarkably well with experimental observations.

Multiscale Modeling of Aqueous Electric Double Layers

From the stability of colloidal suspensions to the charging of electrodes, electric double layers play a pivotal role in aqueous systems. The interactions between interfaces, water molecules, ions and other solutes making up the electrical double layer span length scales from Ångströms to micrometers and are notoriously complex. Therefore, explaining experimental observations in terms of the double layer's molecular structure has been a long-standing challenge in physical chemistry, yet recent advances in simulations techniques and computational power have led to tremendous progress. In particular, the past decades have seen the development of a multiscale theoretical framework based on the combination of quantum density functional theory, force-field based simulations and continuum theory. In this Review, we discuss these theoretical developments and make quantitative comparisons to experimental results from, among other techniques, sum-frequency generation, atomic-force microscopy, and electrokinetics. Starting from the vapor/water interface, we treat a range of qualitatively different types of surfaces, varying from soft to solid, from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, and from charged to uncharged.

Relation between Double Layer Structure, Capacitance, and Surface Tension in Electrowetting of Graphene and Aqueous Electrolytes

Deciphering the mechanisms of charge storage on carbon-based materials is pivotal for the development of next-generation electrochemical energy storage systems. Graphene, the building block of graphitic electrodes, is an ideal model for probing such processes on a fundamental level. Herein, we investigate the thermodynamics of the graphene/aqueous electrolyte interface by utilizing a multiscale quantum mechanics-classical molecular dynamics (QM/MD) approach to provide insights into the effect of alkali metal ion (Li+) concentration on the interfacial tension (γSL) of the charged graphene/electrolyte interface. We demonstrate that the dependence of γSL on the applied surface charge exhibits an asymmetric behavior relative to the neutral surface. At the positively charged graphene sheet, the electrowetting response is amplified by electrolyte concentration, resulting in a strongly hydrophilic surface. On the contrary, at negative potential bias, γSL shows a weaker response to the charging of the electrode. Changes in γSL greatly affect the total areal capacitance predicted by the Young-Lippmann equation but have a negligible impact on the simulated total areal capacitance, indicating that the EDL structure is not directly correlated with the wettability of the surface and different interfacial mechanisms drive the two phenomena. The proposed model is validated experimentally by studying the electrowetting response of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite over a wide range of electrolyte concentrations. Our work presents the first combined theoretical and experimental study on electrowetting using carbon surfaces, introducing new conceptual routes for the investigation of wetting phenomena under potential bias.

Enhanced Heat Flow between Charged Nanoparticles and an Aqueous Electrolyte

Heat transfer through the interface between a metallic nanoparticle and an electrolyte solution has great importance in a number of applications, ranging from nanoparticle-based cancer treatments to nanofluids and solar energy conversion devices. However, the impact of the surface charge and dissolved ions on heat transfer has been scarcely explored so far. In this study, we compute the interface thermal conductance between hydrophilic and hydrophobic charged gold nanoparticles immersed in an electrolyte using equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Compared with an uncharged nanoparticle, we report a 3-fold increase of the Kapitza conductance for a nanoparticle surface charge of +320 mC/m2. This enhancement is shown to be approximately independent of the surface wettability, charge spatial distribution, and salt concentration. This allows us to express the Kapitza conductance enhancement in terms of the surface charge density on a master curve. Finally, we interpret the increase of the Kapitza conductance as a combined result of the shift of the water density distribution toward the charged nanoparticle and an accumulation of the counterions around the nanoparticle surface which increase the Coulombic interaction between the liquid and the charged nanoparticle. These considerations help us to apprehend the role of ions in heat transfer close to electrified surfaces.

Computation of Electrical Conductivities of Aqueous Electrolyte Solutions: Two Surfaces, One Property

In this work, we computed electrical conductivities under ambient conditions of aqueous NaCl and KCl solutions by using the Einstein-Helfand equation. Common force fields (charge q = ±1 e) do not reproduce the experimental values of electrical conductivities, viscosities, and diffusion coefficients. Recently, we proposed the idea of using different charges to describe the potential energy surface (PES) and the dipole moment surface (DMS). In this work, we implement this concept. The equilibrium trajectories required to evaluate electrical conductivities (within linear response theory) were obtained by using scaled charges (with the value q = ±0.75 e) to describe the PES. The potential parameters were those of the Madrid-Transport force field, which accurately describe viscosities and diffusion coefficients of these ionic solutions. However, integer charges were used to compute the conductivities (thus describing the DMS). The basic idea is that although the scaled charge describes the ion-water interaction better, the integer charge reflects the value of the charge that is transported due to the electric field. The agreement obtained with experiments is excellent, as for the first time electrical conductivities (and the other transport properties) of NaCl and KCl electrolyte solutions are described with high accuracy for the whole concentration range up to their solubility limit. Finally, we propose an easy way to obtain a rough estimate of the actual electrical conductivity of the potential model under consideration using the approximate Nernst-Einstein equation, which neglects correlations between different ions.

Mechanism, Kinetics, and Potential of Mean Force of Evaporation of Water from Aqueous Sodium Chloride Solutions of Varying Concentrations

The mechanism, kinetics, and potential of mean force of evaporation of water from aqueous NaCl solutions are investigated through both unbiased molecular dynamics simulations and also biased simulations using the umbrella sampling method. The results are obtained for aqueous solutions of three different NaCl concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 6.0 m and also for pure water. The rate of evaporation is found to decrease in the presence of ions. It is found that the process of evaporation of a surface water molecule from ionic solutions can be triggered through its collision with another water or chloride ion. Such collisions provide the additional kinetic energy that is required for evaporation. However, when the collision takes place with a Cl^- ion, the evaporation of the escaping water also involves a collision with water in the vicinity of the ion at the same time along with the ion-water collision. These two collisions together provide the required kinetic energy for escape of the evaporating water molecule. Thus, the mechanism of evaporation process of ionic solutions can be more complex than that of pure water. The potential of mean force (PMF) of evaporation is found to be positive and it increases with increasing ion concentration. Also, no barrier in the PMF is found to be present for the condensation of water from vapor phase to the surfaces of the solutions. A detailed analysis of the unsuccessful evaporation attempts by surface water molecules is also made in the current study.

Scaled charges for ions: An improvement but not the final word for modeling electrolytes in water

In this work, we discuss the use of scaled charges when developing force fields for NaCl in water. We shall develop force fields for Na⁺ and Cl^- using the following values for the scaled charge (in electron units): ±0.75, ±0.80, ±0.85, and ±0.92 along with the TIP4P/2005 model of water (for which previous force fields were proposed for q = ±0.85 and q = ±1). The properties considered in this work are densities, structural properties, transport properties, surface tension, freezing point depression, and maximum in density. All the developed models were able to describe quite well the experimental values of the densities. Structural properties were well described by models with charges equal to or larger than ±0.85, surface tension by the charge ±0.92, maximum in density by the charge ±0.85, and transport properties by the charge ±0.75. The use of a scaled charge of ±0.75 is able to reproduce with high accuracy the viscosities and diffusion coefficients of NaCl solutions for the first time. We have also considered the case of KCl in water, and the results obtained were fully consistent with those of NaCl. There is no value of the scaled charge able to reproduce all the properties considered in this work. Although certainly scaled charges are not the final word in the development of force fields for electrolytes in water, its use may have some practical advantages. Certain values of the scaled charge could be the best option when the interest is to describe certain experimental properties.

The Role of Surface Chemistry in the Orientational Behavior of Water at an Interface

Molecular dynamics studies have demonstrated that molecular water at an interface, with either a gas or a solid, displays anisotropic orientational behavior in contrast to its bulk counterpart. This effect has been recently implicated in the like-charge attraction problem for colloidal particles in solution. Here, negatively charged particles in solution display a long-ranged attraction where continuum electrostatic theory predicts monotonically repulsive interactions, particularly in solutions with monovalent salt ions at low ionic strength. Anisotropic orientational behavior of solvent molecules at an interface gives rise to an excess interfacial electrical potential which we suggest generates an additional solvation contribution to the total free energy that is traditionally overlooked in continuum descriptions of interparticle interactions in solution. In the present investigation we perform molecular dynamics simulation based calculations of the interfacial potential using realistic surface models representing various chemistries as well as different solvents. Similar to previous work that focused on simple model surfaces constructed by using oxygen atoms, we find that solvents at more realistic model surfaces exhibit substantial anisotropic orientational behavior. We explore the dependence of the interfacial solvation potential on surface properties such as surface group chemistry and group density at silica and carboxylated polystyrene interfaces. For water, we note surprisingly good agreement between results obtained for a simple O-atom wall and more complex surface models, suggesting a general qualitative consistency of the interfacial solvation effect for surfaces in contact with water. In contrast, for an aprotic solvent such as DMSO, surface chemistry appears to exert a stronger influence on the sign and magnitude of the interfacial solvation potential. The study carries broad implications for molecular-scale interactions and may find relevance in explaining a range of phenomena in soft-matter physics and cell biology.

Recent Developments in Polarizable Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Electrolyte Solutions

Polarizable molecular dynamics simulations are a fast progressing field in the scientific research of ionic liquids. The fundamentals of polarizable simulations, as well as their application to ionic liquids, were summarized in a review [Bedrov, D.; Piquemal, J.-P.; Borodin, O.; MacKerell, Jr., A. D.; Roux, B.; Schröder, C. Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Ionic Liquids and Electrolytes Using Polarizable Force Fields. Chem. Rev. 2019, 119, 7940–7995] in 2019. Since then, new methods to treat intermolecular interaction of induced dipoles in these highly charged systems were developed. This concerns the damping of these interactions and additional charge transfer as well as the prediction of ionic materials with ultrahigh refractive indices. In addition to the progress of the polarizable force fields, also thermostats and barostats for polarizable simulations evolved recently.

The "good," the "bad," and the "hidden" in neutron scattering and molecular dynamics of ionic aqueous solutions

We characterize a concentrated 7.3 m CaCl₂ solution, combining neutron diffraction with chloride isotopic substitution (Cl-NDIS) in null water and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We elucidate the solution structure, thermodynamic properties, and extent of ion pairing previously suggested as concentration-dependent and often not observed at lower concentrations. Our Cl-NDIS measurements designate the solvent-shared ion pairing as dominant and the contact ion pairing (CIP) as insignificant even under conditions close to the solubility limit. The MD models parameterized against neutron diffraction with calcium isotopic substitution (Ca-NDIS) overestimate CIP despite successfully reproducing most of the Cl-NDIS signal. This drawback originates from the fact that Ca²⁺-Cl^- interactions were primarily "hidden" in the Ca-NDIS signal due to overlapping with Ca²⁺-O_w and Ca²⁺-H_w contributions to the total scattering. Contrary, MD models with moderate CIP and possessing generally good performance at high concentrations fail to reproduce the NDIS measurements accurately. Therefore, the electronic polarization, introduced in most of the recent MD models via scaling ionic charges, resolves some but not all parameterization drawbacks. We conclude that despite improving the quality of MD models "on average," the question "which model is the best" has not been answered but replaced by the question "which model is better for a given research." An overall "good" model can still be inappropriate or, in some instances, "bad" and, unfortunately, produce erroneous results. The accurate interpretation of several NDIS datasets, complemented by MD simulations, can prevent such mistakes and help identify the strengths, weaknesses, and convenient applications for corresponding computational models.

Anomalous Phase Behaviors of Monolayer NaCl Aqueous Solutions Induced by Effective Coulombic Interactions within Angstrom-Scale Slits

Interests in subnanofluidic devices have called for molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies of the thermodynamic behavior of monolayer salt solution within angstrom-scale slits. However, it still remains a grand challenge to accurately describe the Coulombic interactions by incorporating the effects of charge transfer and electronic dielectric screening. Herein, by using the electronic continuum model, where the effective ion charges are fine-tuned with a scaling factor of λ, we present simulation evidence that the effective Coulombic interactions among Na⁺/Cl^- ions can strongly affect the behavior of monolayer ionic aqueous solution. Our microsecond-scale MD simulations show that only the counterions with moderate effective charges (0.3 ≤ λ ≤ 0.8) can dissolve in monolayer water, whereas the high effective charges (λ ≥ 0.85) induce ions to assemble into monolayer nanocrystals, and ions with the low effective charges (λ ≤ 0.2) exhibit gas-like nanobubble. These findings could provide deeper insights into the physical chemistry behind subnanofluidic iontronic devices.

First hyperpolarizability of water at the air-vapor interface: a QM/MM study questions standard experimental approximations

Surface Second-Harmonic Generation (S-SHG) experiments provide a unique approach to probe interfaces. One important issue for S-SHG is how to interpret the S-SHG intensities at the molecular level. Established frameworks commonly assume that each molecule emits light according to an average molecular hyperpolarizability tensor β(-2ω,ω,ω). However, for water molecules, this first hyperpolarizability is known to be extremely sensitive to their environment. We have investigated the molecular first hyperpolarizability of water molecules within the liquid-vapor interface, using a quantum description with explicit, inhomogeneous electrostatic embedding. The resulting average molecular first hyperpolarizability tensor depends on the distance relative to the interface, and it practically respects the Kleinman symmetry everywhere in the liquid. Within this numerical approach, based on the dipolar approximation, the water layer contributing to the Surface Second Harmonic Generation (S-SHG) intensity is less than a nanometer. The results reported here question standard interpretations based on a single, averaged hyperpolarizability for all molecules at the interface. Not only the molecular first hyperpolarizability tensor significantly depends on the distance relative to the interface, but it is also correlated to the molecular orientation. Such hyperpolarizability fluctuations may impact the S-SHG intensity emitted by an aqueous interface.

Molecular Simulation of Electrode-Solution Interfaces

Many key industrial processes, from electricity production, conversion, and storage to electrocatalysis or electrochemistry in general, rely on physical mechanisms occurring at the interface between a metallic electrode and an electrolyte solution, summarized by the concept of an electric double layer, with the accumulation/depletion of electrons on the metal side and of ions on the liquid side. While electrostatic interactions play an essential role in the structure, thermodynamics, dynamics, and reactivity of electrode-electrolyte interfaces, these properties also crucially depend on the nature of the ions and solvent, as well as that of the metal itself. Such interfaces pose many challenges for modeling because they are a place where quantum chemistry meets statistical physics. In the present review, we explore the recent advances in the description and understanding of electrode-electrolyte interfaces with classical molecular simulations, with a focus on planar interfaces and solvent-based liquids, from pure solvent to water-in-salt electrolytes.

"In Silico" Seawater

Many important processes affecting the earth's climate are determined by the physical properties of seawater. In addition, desalination of seawater is a significant source of drinking water for the human population living in coastal areas. Since the physical properties of seawater governing these processes depend on the molecular interactions among its components, a deeper knowledge of seawater at the molecular level would contribute to a better understanding of these phenomena. However, in strong contrast with the situation in other areas such as biomolecules or materials science, molecular simulation studies reporting the physical properties of seawater are currently lacking. This is probably due to the usual perception of the seawater composition being too complex to approach. This point of view ignores the fact that physical properties of seawater are dependent on a single parameter representing the composition, namely the salinity. This is because the relative proportions of any two major constituents of seasalt are always the same. Another obstacle to performing molecular simulations of seawater could have been the unavailability of a satisfactory force field representing the interactions between water molecules and dissolved substances. However, this drawback has recently been overcome with the proposal of the Madrid-2019 force field. In this work we show for the first time that molecular simulation of seawater is feasible. We have performed molecular dynamics simulations of a system, the composition of which is close to the average composition of standard seawater and with the molecular interactions given by the Madrid-2019 force field. In this way we are able to provide quantitative or semiquantitative predictions for a number of relevant physical properties of seawater for temperatures and salinities from the oceanographic range to those relevant to desalination processes. The computed magnitudes include static (density), dynamical (viscosity and diffusion coefficients), structural (ionic hydration, ion-ion distribution functions), and interfacial (surface tension) properties.

Interfacial and bulk properties of concentrated solutions of ammonium nitrate

We conducted molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to calculate the density and surface tension of concentrated ammonium nitrate (AN) solutions up to the solubility limit of ammonium nitrate in water, by combining the SPC/E, SPCE/F and TIP4P/2005 water models with OPLS model for ammonium and nitrate ions. This is the first time that the properties of concentrated solutions of nitrates, especially AN, have been studied by molecular dynamics. We effectively account for the polarisation effects by the electronic continuum correction (ECC), practically realised via rescaling of the ionic charges. We found that, the full-charge force field MD simulations overestimate the experimental results, as the ions experience repulsion from the interface and prefer to remain in the subsurface layer and the bulk solution. In contrast, reducing the ionic charges results in the behaviour that fits well with the experimental data. The nitrate anions display a greater propensity for the interface than the ammonium cations. We accurately predict both the density and the rise in the surface tension of concentrated solutions of AN, recommending TIP4P/2005 for water and the scaled-charge OPLS model (OPLS/ECC) for the ions in the solutions. We observe that, the adsorption of anions to the interface accompanies their depletion in the subsurface layer, which is preferentially occupied by cations, resulting in the formation of the electric double layer. We demonstrate the ion deficiency for up to 3 Å below the surface and establish the requirement to include the polarisability effects in the OPLS model for AN. While these results confirmed the findings of the previous studies for dilute solutions, they are new in the solubility limit. Concentrated solutions exhibit a strong effect of the abundance of solute on the coordination numbers of ions and on the degree of ion pairing. Surprisingly, ion pairing decreases significantly at the interface compared with the bulk. The present study identifies OPLS/ECC, along with TIP4P/2005, to yield accurate predictions of physical properties of concentrated AN, with precision required for industrial applications, such as a formulation of emulsion and fuel-oil explosives that now predominate the civilian use of AN. An application of this model will allow one to predict the surface properties of supersaturated solutions of AN which fall outside the capability of the present laboratory experiments but are important industrially.
